Java newbie seeks easy solution I cannot find!

How would I print a fraction ( it MUST be a fraction ) to be displayed in the Java application?
For example I take the average of three numbers and the result is 5 1/3.
I have been fooling around with % 3 ( in my case it will always be a number over 3 because for this particular program I am taking the average of only three numbers ) . Using % 3 allows me to get the remainder number that will be displayed on the upper part of the fraction but no matter what I do I cannot get that number to be represented OVER 3.
I have been trying
system.out.println((average / 3) % / 3);
(average is where it takes the average of my integers)
But it does the actual math instead of printing out the remainder over 3. When I throw in quotation marks it doesn't work either. I have been looking through a few books and I have come up blank.
I am totally new to Java so anything you throw at me will be much appreciated. Thank you.

I guess very simply put is how would I convert a decimal to a written
out fraction in Java? IE 3.3333333 -> 3 1/3spoiler:public void printAsFractionDiv3(int n) {
   int f= n%3;
   System.out.print(n/3);
   if (f != 0)
      System.out.print("+"+f+"/3");
}kind regards,
Jos

    from my experience, using weblogic jars can be a pain if the full install is not on the local box.
    Note that you dont have to 'install' it. Just copy the directory.
    Reason is that the jar files have manifests with relative classpaths.
    For an example of horror take a look at the weblogic.jar MANIFEST's classpath entry.

    Daniel Huang

    Having not seen this before, I assume that the issue is that the command line string is too long when Javac is invoked.
    Here are a few things to reduce the size of the command line:
    - do not use the CLASSPATH option, but set the CLASSPATH environment variable (you can to that in a .bat file)
    - do not provide the .java files but rely on the implicit make capability in both, the SQLJ translator and the Java compiler. (Note: you must mention all of the .sqlj files that your program requires, do not rely on implicit make to find all of those.)
    - you can perform the -ser2class conversion as a separate step (see the SQLJ FAQ), as well as the Java compilation
    - there may or may not be a facility in your operating system to increase the size of the environment (and this may or may not have an effect on the maximum command line length)
    - you could try to omit the -passes option and see if that helps (that may actually be where your invocation if failing in the first place, in that it cannot write to some temporary file).
    Let us know how it goes. Thanks!

  • Cannot find a J2SE SDK installed at path C:\Program Files\Java\jre6

    Hi,
    I am trying to install the latest version of SQL Developer 3.0 on my brand new Windows7(64-bit) computer. I already installed the Java SDK6 (Update26). Unfortunatelly I am forcing some problems.
    When I start the sqldeveloper.exe for installing - at the beginning when I browse and select the java.exe an error comes up:
    Cannot find a J2SE SDK installed at path C:\Program Files\Java\jre6
    Why isn't it working?
    Can you help me? Any ideas?
    Thanks a lot!

    That's because you are trying to run SQLDeveloper with a JRE not a JDK.
    Since you already installed a JDK you should have a folder labeled
    jdk1.6.0_26in your C:\Program Files\Java directory.
    If you cant find the proper JDK in your system the 64 bit version for windows can be found here:

    nothing helped.
    I'm using the latest Ubuntu version incl. all updates.
    Can anybody help me please?
    Regards,

    Hello Eray!
    Thanks for your reply.
    I tried that, but now I get
    Caused by: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: Could not initialize class com.sap.mw.jco.JCO
    Therefore I tried to set the CLASSPATH
    - in MANIFEST.MF
    - when deploying the Bean in Glassfish (there is an option that allows you to do so)
    ... both without any success / change (see the Exception above).
    it does now look like the following:
    glassfish/
    bin/sapjco.jar
    bin/libsapjcorfc.so
    bin/librfccm.so
    domains/domain1/lib/sapjco.jar
    ..but is not working.
    I also tried:
    glassfish/
    bin/sapjco.jar (links to ..domains/domain1/lib/sapjco.jar)
    bin/libsapjcorfc.so
    bin/librfccm.so
    domains/domain1/lib/sapjco.jar
    and
    glassfish/
    bin/libsapjcorfc.so
    bin/librfccm.so
    domains/domain1/lib/sapjco.jar
    ... but that didn't work either.
    ...everytime with the classpath set to /usr/share/glassfish/bin/sapjco.jar or /usr/share/glassfish/domains/domain1/lib/sapjco.jar respectively.
    Using Windows, the following setup works:
    glassfish\
    lib\sapjcorfc.dll
    lib\librfc32.dll
    domains/domain1/lib/sapjco.jar
    Do you have any other idea?
    Thank you lots.
    Regards,
    Stefan

    Hi,
    are you sure that your classpath is set correct?
    For checking this you'll need a registry editor and check the command that is entered for the .class file extensions.

  • After upgrade to JHS Production: cannot find two standard java Classes

    Hi, First: congratulations on the Production release. Great that it is there.
    After making several backups, I have upgraded to JHS build 91 Production release (I came from JHS build 78).
    1. after upgrade to JHS Production, I tested my application first (so before re-enabling Jheadstart on the ViewController and regenerating pages). The application still worked fine
    2. I re-enabled JHeadstart on the VC project
    3. I opened my Applictation Definition Files and saved them (I noticed a deprecated property OverwriteUiModel that disappeared after saving)
    4. I ran the generator on my three App. Def. Files.

    6. I ran the application, the first (Table-style) page comes up fine

    Any idea why this might have happened, just because I upgrade to JHS production release?
    I am reverting to build 78 again to continue developing, but hope to be able to get working with the prod release soon, but I lack knowledge to determine where the error occurs...

    Sandra,
    I have the (ugly) feeling that I am facing the problem mentioned in http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=1211326? : it looks like when a JSPX page gets too complex, the Embedded OC4J raises this StackOverFlow class notfound error :-(. Probably the (it only hits me when navigating to the most complex page) generated page generated with build 78 was fine, but the generated page after build 91 has become too complex, allthough nothing changed in between. What I can see from the difference between the before and after build 91 situation for all pages, is that you have added the <id=...> arguments to all ADF elements, like [id="PersonsSaveButton"] in:
    <af:commandButton actionListener="#{bindings.Commit.execute}"
                      action="Commit"
                      textAndAccessKey="#{nls['SAVE_BUTTON_LABEL_PERSONS']}"
                      id="PersonsSaveButton">
                   <af:resetActionListener/>
      </af:commandButton>In build78 these were not there. As far as I can see another difference after generating with build 91 is a new element in the page:
    <af:panelGroup rendered="#{(bindings.PersonsIterator.currentRowIndexInRange!=-1 and bindings.PersonsIterator.findMode!='true')}">I have not seen a proper solution for this on the JDeveloper forum. I noticed people asking if there is a kind of 'maximum' on how complex a page can get before this error situation happens. No answer on that found (you do not want to know there is a maximum anyway).
    The specific page is a master with 5 stacked detail regions and three "use as LOV" groups. Further on about 30 domains are used...
    And the page has not finished yet, it will get more "complex" that this. I hope someone knows a good solution so that I can continue to use the Embedded OC4J for testing, otherwise developing wil get very time consuming if I have to deploy to AS every time...something I cannot afford since the project deadline is getting nearer and nearer.

    Actually, you have NO CLUE what he's trying to doActually he said what he is trying to do in his posting. It's no mystery. But that's all the information that's available. If you know something that isn't posted here why not say so?
    Your reply was a snide, rude, "You're stupid for doing it that way" answerMy reply was neither snide nor rude and implied none of what you impute to it. It was a proper and constructive suggestion. You are entitled to disagree with it, but that doesn't justify this immoderate outburst.
    Bottom line is, you chose to be nastyBottom line is you're just making this up. You are imputing motives to me without evidence. Don't do that.
    You are the type of person that makes searching forums and posting questions for assistance a near waste of time.I doubt that you'll find many regulars here that would agree with that assertion. When you have made over 16,000 posts here over ten years as I have, come back and we'll discuss it some more.
    Go back to grade school and ...I suggest you try it yourself. You're not adding anything except noise to the discussion. Try curbing your temper, and while you're at it have a good look at the Code of Conduct for these forums. You're verging on personal abuse here.
    And, additionally, I've used ANT in the past. Batch files are FAR AND AWAY easier to set up.In your opinion. I disagree entirely, and I have eleven years' experience with Java to back it up.
    As for CLASSPATH, I haven't done anything about setting it beyond installing the JDK since about 1999, and it has a dot in it as we speak.

  • Windows cannot find \jre\NT\1.5.0\bin\java

    Hello,
    I searched google and found many documents and also tried 1-2 option posted on web but didn't succeed so last solution posting here.
    Trying unsupported installation R12(12.1.1) on Windows 7-Professional 64-Bit.
    System check succeeded without any trouble but with 33% installation, it gives above error(*windows cannot find \jre\NT\1.5.0\bin\java* ) and installation comes out.
    The StartCD came with jre\NT\1.6.0\bin\java directory so i tried to rename the folder with 1.5.0 ( reference and also changed in Rapidwizard.cmd .
    but now it doesn't throw any error but after 33% complete, it just exists without too much of information.
    The log too had only this info after system check messages
    RW-50010: Error: - script has returned an error:   2
    I got following DVDs
    oraAppsDB1
    oraAppsDB2
    oraApps1
    oraApps2
    OraAS
    OraDB
    startCD
    and then i tried to create stage area from startCD but it failed as it was asking for a DVD which i didn't have because i tried every DVD i have.
    So i manually created directories in stage area(StageR12).
    Appreciate your response.

  • Java teststand - Error 1500 Cannot find class

    Hi everyone,
    I am using TestStand 2010 and Java 1.7.
    I try to add a java class in the Computer example folder, and call the method.
    The java class is simply like below, because I just want to try calling my own java class.
    I have set the Class Path in Start JVM to the directory where the Computer example (which is also the directory where I put my java class) are located.
    TestStand can call the Computer's methods, but not mine (got error Error 1500 Cannot find class). I put my my java method calling among the defaults Computer example calls.
    Furthermore I have read similiar threads but still I cannot solve the error.
    Where is the part I miss, actually? Please share some insights.
    Note: I even try to leave the Class Path empty, but TestStand still can call the Computer's methods. Why?
    public class TestJava {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    public String returnString(boolean a){
    return "success";
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    In order to load a class that is inside a package you have to use the package notation (or modify the example in order to use it). The path to the class is passed directly to the JVM in order to load the class, but really what is needed is the package from the class path including the full path to the class.
    That means you have to do the following:
    1. Set the class path to the base directory where you built all your classes, if you have the following structure:
    MyFile.java
    builds
    MyPackage
    MyFile.class
    You have to set the classpath to the builds directory
    2. When you configure your steps, you have to set the path to the class in your Java steps to MyPackage/MyFile.class (note separator is a slash, not the usual Windows backslash, so the browse button doesn't quite help with that).
     Another important thing is that when you set the classpath you are deleting the normal class path in Java, if you are using Java classes from the default libraries you might have to add <jre directory>\lib\rt.jar

    I dowloaded the SAP Solution M. 7.0 SR4 Java Comp.  from:
    Installations and Upgrades" SAP Technology Components" SAP SOLUTION MANAGER" SAP SOLUTION MANAGER 7.0
    but it does not work, the label is wrong and I cannot find the correct label anywhere.
    Please help.
    Thanks.

    Hm... Interesting that you have to extract the rar files on windows when they are for linux...
    I had the same problem some time ago, didn´t know you were on Linux so it was just a quick guess
    You could also use "unrar e -ep ".  This would also extract the directories, too bad this is not a default option.

  • Unable to compile "SerialDemo.java", many "cannot find symbols" errors

    I have all the correct files in their respective directory.
    comm.jar in jre\lib\bin,
    javax.comm.properties in jre\lib
    win32com.dll in jre\bin
    I extracted all the whole of SerialDemo into one folder and started compiling from there. But it doesn't work. I keep getting many "cannot find symbol" errors. They are usually referred to by:
    SerialParameters
    SerialConnection
    AlertDialog
    SerialConnectionException
    SerialDemo.java is not edited and was compiled directly. All of my files are in one folder (AlertDialog.java compiles fine and is in the same folder, etc)
    I was wondering what might be the cause of it. I'm currently using a Windows XP Service Pack 2, IBM P3 Laptop. I was reading "http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=674514&messageID=3941560"
    And I found out it works fine on Win2k OS. Why is this so? I'm getting the exact same error as he stated on his last post and I tried looking for a solution and decided to turn to you guys. I'd really appreciate some help, if any. Thanks in advance.

    I followed the PlatformSpecific. I realised that I
    added one for JRE when it wasn't required. The
    problem was solved.
    Thank you so much, the both of you. My stupid mistake
    caused quite a bit of havoc. I apologise.No need to apologise; The confusing part is that when you download
    a jre, that's just what your get: a jre, but when you download the jdk
    you not just get the jdk and the jre but you get a second jre with them,
    stored under the jdk directory.
    To the programmer that second jre is useless, it is used internally by
    the jdk tools.
    kind regards,
    Jos
