I also queried the Nokia care centre and was told that it was due to the supplier of the software and not Nokia. Guess that the story of Nokia purchasing Navteq was not true as their help centre denies any arrangement between the two and that the 300% increase in price is not their fault. Guess many more will now look at options with other suppliers as Nokia must be so small that they can't negotiate a better deal for thier users.

Hi, haven't spotted this question before so apologies if its a repeat. Had posted in with Nseries but had not any replies in there.
I have returned from Canada, (Toronto) discovering I could only pick up one network with my n95-1, Rogers. There was no 3G there and this I discovered, with some research, is due to the North Americas taking the option to be unique on the frequency they use for 3G. The difference is they are using 850/1900 WCDMA - HSDPA band instead of the 2100 MHz one we do in the rest of the world! Well my world! )
Is there likely ever to be a software update to allow 3G to be accessed on n95-1 when I travel there again?.. The phone already uses these frequencies for GSM, so surely it is just a matter of software allowing it to use other frequencies for WCDMA/HSDPA protocols. I've noted N95-3 and soon an N95-8GB for the US markets are and to be launched! with necessary frequency handled!
I am keen to know if such an update is ever likely, as I bought my n95 last year owing to many planed visits to work in various cities in North America in the coming year, 2008! and just before the 8Gb was launched too. It's just another big disappointment to learn this global phone is just a brick in 3G realm of Canada/USA.

The phone's are using 0.5-3mb of the free ram too
normal phone functions. This is added to the camera memory
because it will close down running programs if there are
not enough memory to camera + "normal function".
(If some thing is not correct... then tell me!).
Conclusion :
Almost all symbian phones in this overview have
more than 75% of free RAM to programs and "system"
programs, when you are recording a movie, or watching a
recorded movie in gallery.
BUT!: N95 has only 5-6mb (25-30%) of free RAM to this job! :/
What do this mean?
Well for many people they get an ERROR MEMORY message some times.
And for some "heavy" symbian programs users
(that also use "system" programs),
they get this messages ALOT!
I got it 9 out of 10 when I will record a movie or watch one.
And I have ONLY 3-4MB of Symbian "system" programs running!
Well some question's :
01) Is it Nokia's first Symbian smartphone?
02) Could we know/read that the camera will use about
15mb out of 20mb, before we buy the n95?
03) Does Symbian means that u can improve/expand
the functions in the mobile, with new symbian's programs?
04) Are the Symbian system and programs (in 2007)
more RAM hungry then in 2003 (Nokia 6600)?
05) Is it fair to use "system" Symbian programs (3. parts) in n95?
06) Is it fair to multitaske in n95?
07) Would it be fair to use the video camera AND
listen to musik on the same time ...in a device like n95?
08) And how many MB (max),
in a device like n95 and in the year 2007,
is fair to use to Symbian system programs?
09) Does programs and Nokia system funktions (and menu's)
give all memory back when they have been used?

My personal opinion is :
That Nokia should give us some money back,
or some thing else, so we will not loose so much when we will try to sell the n95, so we can get a full symbian mobile anno 2007 ...like N95-8GB!
We should could count on that when we buy a
SYMBIAN Smartphone it has enough RAM to run some few programs in the backgound, when we use the built-in camera or galleri in the phone. Why else buy a Symbian phone?

Well n95 has almost the same camera like the n93 so you mean they are pioneer twise?
And when was it Nokia produced the first symbian smartphone?
And why did they put in less free memory in n95 than n70?
Take a look just on the camera differense. Why less memory?
They have experiense from the n93? the camera use alot of RAM when u record og would see a recorded movie.

Phone Numbers are not visible in PC

I own N95 three years and until recently I could edit the contacts in the phone via PC Suite. But since last month I do not see phone numbers in PC suite. I can see data in fields Names, addresses, companies etc. but fields "phone number" and "telephone number" is empty. However If I open contact directly on my mobile I can see this numbers. I tried install the newest version of PC suite, but without success. Next I tryed this steps: to install older version PC suite, to install Nokia Ovi Suite, other computer, export contact to excel, always without success. I cannot make backup of phone numbers only names of contact. Any idea?

I agree that this is an answer for issue but the space is assigned by iOS in contacts, not myself and the phone call in roaming either from operater and software, but software must be able to match it or not to save it on contact details with space after country code.

N900 Software support is shockingly bad!!!

Nokia. Why release a phone with no/very little software support? It's been about 4 months since the release and it's still not much better!!!
I replaced my Iphone with the N900 because it's meant to be an Iphone beater, but the truth is looking sadly the opposite.
Nokia Map loader is not working and the PC Suite has bugs and it's complicated having to switch between PC Suite mode and Mass Storage mode. What's happened to my free Navigation?
Come on Nokia this is embarrasing, I absolutely love this phone and I want to recommed it to my friends, but with the software situation that's not a possibility.

N900 Personal Review
Hi all, I would like to make some comments about the New Nokia N900.
Shortly the phone SUCKS!
I have been a Nokia user for about 10 years, and for the past 3 I have been using the NSeries, I started 3 years ago with the N95, then moved’ on to the N96 an now as you can see I have had the chance to use the N900 even though my original plan was the N97. The reason for this is that I contacted my provider (T-Mobile UK) as I was due an upgrade, and was told that they didn’t do this handset directly, but I could get this phone if I did the upgrade though Carphone Warehouse (Don’t even get me started on them) any way I contacted Carphone Warehouse and told them that I was due an upgrade and wanted the N97, the idiot on the phone started telling me that the N900 was much better and that it was faster and all. I told him I would have a look into it my self, at least to read some comparisons online. After having read the comparison on several sites, on “paper” the N900 sounded much better, faster processor (N97 is about 400Mhz, N900 is about 600Mhz), more RAM, the use of a Linux based OS and so on, sounded great, I accepted the upgrade with 14 days exchange if not happy.
Well I have used the phone for about 3 days, and let me tell you what I think…
The device is not as fast as people say, you would not think that there is about 200Mhz speed difference between them and that the N900 has double of the RAM then the N97. Yes it does allow you to open several tasks at once, but the CPU drain off more demanding applications is definitely noticeable, for example when running a YouTube page in the background with a video playing and opening other apps, the music temporarily stops just like the N95/N96 did/do.
The fact that it’s a new mobile technology makes it also not very popular right now and there is lack of application unlike the Symbian OS used by the N97, even Nokia them self are not up to speed, the OVI map on the N900 is version 1 point something and is really useless, unlike version 3.03 (3.04 BETA out too) of the N97 (don’t forget that I am using the N97 as a Symbian comparison).
The firmware upgrade is very complex for general users, this includes having to use a Flashing Tool and command lines, I had some issues at the beginning and I am an IT technician. The NSU (Nokia Software Update) didn’t detect the new version available even though the phone was delivered with version 1.x and the version available was 3.2x.
Even the phone “Hard Reset” is complicated, once again you have to use the Flashing Tool and download an other file called EMMC that should technically erase the 32GB memory, but be were, after having used this file my contact were still there and some other information were there too such as my OVI e-mail account and my SKYPE account details, there was also a file from the sketch software that had not been deleted and had to do so manually.
Talking about SKYPE, many sites when comparing N97 to N900 state that the N900 has SKYPE and some other software unlike the N97, well I use to use SKYPE on the N95, it may not be inbuilt but no one says you can’t download it, I use to have SKYPE Lite with many more features then the “messaging” SKYPE inbuilt in the N900. I also use to have 3 different versions of Opera, Windows Live messenger, the IPlayer application, an application provided by SKY TV to control TV listing and Remote Recording, Google Map, Google YouTube application and much, much more, most probably you wont find half of those for the N900, but you don’t see anyone stating that anywhere.
The N900 also lack the option to create folder to organize your applications, any application is “plonked” with the rest in a random order and there is nothing you can do about it, apart from creating a short-cut on one of the 4 useless screens and try to organize it that way.
It also seem to lack the use of the SIM contact option, all you can do is copy from the SIM but not use the SIM storage, now my SIM allows me to store 200 contacts, this would A) save memory on the phone, and B) be used as a back-up of the numbers. I normally use it as B, I back-up the numbers on the SIM (apart from the PC) because the SIM does not die as easy as the phone, lets say (and this has happened to me before with the N96) that the phone drops in the bath, the phone would most probably short and die, but if you had the numbers on the SIM you can move to a back-up phone no problem, same as if you drop the phone and it brakes.
An other issues I had with the N900 is that when you create short-cuts on one of the 4 desktop, you cant align the items, so you may have one up, one down and so on, you would think that they would have a snap to grid or something, but no such thing.
The battery is worse then any phone I have seen, I have lost a “line” while playing only 2 YouTube videos over 3G network hardly anything else running, now the videos were about 3 to 5 minutes each so lets say I lost a battery “line” in 10 minutes, I guess with-in 1 hour your battery would be flat.
The battery charger is not a standard Nokia one (pin) but it uses the same socked of the USB cable, maybe they run out of money while designing, who knows, the only good thing about the charging is that you can charge it while connecting to the PC via USB.
The keyboard misses the mouse pad that we have on the N97, and even thought the device supports on-screen keyboard too, I have noticed that many of the application only support the normal slide-out keyboard, application such as the OVI map (while using the search address option).
The messaging options are very limited too, IM and SMS is all included in an option called conversations located in the main menu, as far as I have seen you are also not able to select multi items when trying to delete them, and this does not only happened in the “conversations” section, I had to delete all the inbuilt songs 1 by 1 and several other files 1 by 1.
The camera options are very limited too, and the picture quality is very poor as far as I can see, I have taken better pictures with the N95 2 years ago.
There seem to also be a limitation when trying to edit website short-cuts name on the desktop, the name is basically what ever the site owners use as a title for the site, for example YouTube uses “YouTube – Broadcast Yourself” and that’s what the phone seems to use as a desktop short-cut title.
The 3G seem to also run slower on this device, web-page loading time between this phone and the N95 seems to be slower more then faster.
And this is what I have discovered in 2 and a half days of using the phone, I don’t even want to imagine how dissatisfied I would have to be if I had to keep this phone for 12/18/24 months, luckily I have the 14 days to exchange and will contact Carphone Warehouse in the morning to arrange an exchange for the N97, I have already taken my SIM card out and placed it in a spare N95 I have at home, that’s how quick I want to get away from the device.
My general advice would be to stay away from this phone and technology at least for now, and not to always believe what is stated by device specs on “paper” as sometimes it’s not all as expected.

Set up communicator bugg??? Nokia E5-00

When I click with the right button (contacts) then go to the right I can see : Set up communicator and one tab more I see again "set up communicator"(but with no search like the first one).
Am I the only one where it is like that or is this another bug?

I purchased this E5 yesterday evening..configured mail for exchange..n now i see an additional option of set up communicator on the home screen..whats painful is all the contacts i sync from m previous phone to this E5 seem to erased.
I bought E75 in nov 2009..tha phone gave me nightmares..but after lot of convincing from other I took E75 mis hap just one stray case...
REALISING NOW AFTER THIS EXPERIENCE OF SET UP COMMUNICATOR BUGG JUST THE NEXT DAY OF PURCHASE THAT NOKIA PHONE SHOULD BE STRICTLY AVOIDED.

N97-mini multiple issues

Hi,
My phone has multiple problems and I believe by reading the forums that these issues are common to most devices of the same kind. It's a N97-mini, less than a year old and up-to-date (as far as I can remember, because today it decided not to boot anymore).
- First the battery level is not accurate - it nearly goes from full charge directly to empty. Yesterday evening it was charged, this morning it was down. Helpful when you want to use the alarm. And tips for saving battery lifetime are simply **bleep** - what's the point of having a smartphone if you can't use any of the typical smartphones' features? Why would I disable GPRS or Bluetooth on such device?
- Second, I have been unable to boot it today. It has been charging for the whole day now, and keeps beeping from times to times, but I have not been able to turn it on. The power button has no effect. Removing battery and putting it back won't help. Any other method would be appreciated.
- Third, the Bluetooth works very badly - my Jabra headset simply causes the phone to reboot, while my car's bluetooth makes it freeze. I go without now, the power saving advice was actually right...
- Last the RAM is insufficient. Even after a fresh reboot, I'm unable to use most applications. Even email polling stops after a while, saying the memory is full. But there is no application running except for the operating system. I'm not even using the browser. Again, not point of having a smartphone when you can't get emails with it.
I was a Nokia fan before, had a N95 for years with very good experience. Compared to my N97, the N95 was amazing. It had bugs but I knew the workarounds and could rely on it eventually. In my opinion, the N97-mini is a total failure but unfortunately I cannot afford to buy something else. I would appreciate any tip on how to make it boot, at least.

Hi, for message storage, it's a tait of Nokia phones, thet after connection by usb that the storage point will revert to C, so when I disconnect my phone from computer I always check it's still set to E.
As for apps, there are loads of sources other than Ovi, try Getjar .com, you can download to computer and just drag and drop.
As for ovi store, I don't use the app, I simplyuse web browser to go there (it keeps trying to make you install ovi store but ignore it, just select exit.) find the app you want log in and download.

What's Worth Doing, Is Worth Doing Well!
All "N-series" are incredible!

I was a HUGE WINMO FAN. i would not even considwer a phone to be a smartphone unless it had winmo.
But then I tried the nokia N95 last year and realised that s860 was a pretty nice OS also. Did not have aS MANY BELLS AND WHISTLES as winmo, but worked really well. Very intuitive and with a few tweaks had almost everything winmo had except for a truly dynamic desktop.
Then I bought an iphone3g and it was really intuitive and handled ms exchange even better than microsofy does,tHE SCREEN WAS GREAT, and the most responsive of any touch screen I have used, but it had a few too many limitation for me. cut and paste, no mms messages and a **bleep** camera.
So I decided to go back to winmo. Bought a HTC touch cruise and then an HTC touch diamond. I realised afer the journey through these phones, winmo offered the most flexibility of any OS. Mpre tweaKS AND APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE TO WINMO THAN ANY OTHER os. hgowever THE INTERFACE was a pia even when disguised by touch flo, panels, etc.
Winmo needs a complete makeover amnd I hope they get it, but until they do I am a symbian fan and the N97 looks like it will be great.
Symbian has turned out to be the best compromise for me. I hAVE had n95-1 n95-4 N-96 AND NOW HAVE N85. These phones have all been super and if I wasnt a gadget nut would be happt with any one of them, but I am always looking for the next hreat thing. Right now it is the n85

Who can solve iSync problem with Nokia N95? (I use the Nokia plug already)

Since I bought my new cool Mac:, I sync my N95 with iSync and the Nokia N95 plug-in. Thinking at first that is works flawlessly (as other members here seem to think as well) I later found out, that if I make changes to any calendar or "to do" description! on either the N95 or the Mac it syncs, but only up until a certain number of characters. If I exceed this number, the description on the phone will simply be cut off - in the iCal it still fully appears though.
Rather surprising, since when syncing with a PC via the Nokia PC suite there is no such an issue. All my often lengthy descriptions are fully put on the phone. And if I sync back there are no problems either. So I guess it has to do with the iSync protocol or this Nokia N95 iSync plug-in? Any ideas, solutions...? Any help greatly appreciated!

The flex cable is damaged. Some years back when I had a Nokia N95 8GB the flex cable was damaged and for a few days the screen was showing strange colours at the display and eventually the screen became black. I went to a local repair shop and I replaced the flex cable and what I noticed was that the flex cable that it had no proximity sensor on it so I told the technician to remove the proximity sensor on the original one and replace it with the new flex cable. Another thing I discovered was that after fitting the flex cable and returning the cover the front camera was not in its usual position so the technician had to do some modifications to get it back to its normal position and after a few months it was damaged and this time I went to Nokia Care Centre and replaced the flex cable for a small fee and what I noticed was that the flex cable that I previously bought was a fake cable. The one bought from Nokia Care Centre had its proximity sensor and when the cover was returned the camera was in its exact position the same as it was with the original flex cable. What I wanted to say is that please beware of fake flex cables on the market and I suggest that you buy it from an authorised Nokia Dealer.

N95 USB id not recognized if behind two levels usb...

I spent a lot of hour, to reconnect my N95 via USB, because, explanation at the end, it seems impossible to connect the phone is there is a HUB between the N95 and the computer (else than the native buitin-the-computer).
Before everything was installed since two years. By accident equipement bluetooth have been destroyed and Windowd XP SP3 installation should have to be redone.
Even I many people that I am a professionnal in informatics, expert in some subjects, I have been lost. I pass on erratics ways, and lost hours to go to the diagnostic : mine :
The USB driver is unable to recognize a N95 (always set to the right USB connection PC-Suite or OBVI) if it is connected on a second level USB Hub.
as I have only three USB main ports I use two USB (USB2 and USB ... ) on my portable (DELL Latitude D800 and XP SP3)
During installation of PC-Suite or OVI, the soft see the "new usb device", sometimes says 'N95 master...." but never reaches to end the installation : what happends :
- the windows USB detection sees too at the same time (behind the HUB) the new USB device and propose to install it automatically, while PC-suite says "installing" (what ?).
then :
If you don't make anything this can spend as long siecles you want.
If you say OK to windows : it answers "impossible to install" and later PC-suite say "you have problems with your connection". If you disconnect you N95 you can have the "blue screen on <ousbehci.sys at address F76BE41D based at F76B7000 datestamp 433c099a>
If on windows you answer "cancel" it immediately detects "a new device" and so on... eternally. But it will create for each try an undefined device into the device manager (stopped at 32).
Some times the main N95 is detected and some others are seen but never all the link devices are detected and soft installed you are reconducted to the previous situation.
This as been repeated on clean installations (unistalling part of drivers installed)
If you connect your N95 directly on the first level of HUB it is perfectly installed.
But as my Hub are well alimented and Ucc controlled (7 disks, camera, Micro-cards reader etc...) ir is not a current alimentation problem.
Later when you reconnect your N95 is not detected if it his not connected on the first HUB level (integrated to computer)
So after this bad experience I have one advice to the others users (by security) :
- never install threw a second level HUB
- if after a good installation at a reconnect via an HUB, the 'new USB device found' main USB installer panel appears (if you change of connection this can be normal) but fails, which is not normal, connect directly your phone only on a main USB connection of your computer (and clean your device manager - XP SP3)

im having the same problem i think. When I plug my bionic into my computer nothing happens on my computer or my phone. I can't access any files from my computer. I think I may be stuck in charge only mode but I don't know how to get out of it. I have tried this on multiple computers. Anyone know how to fix this?

Nokia N95 8gb latest firmware update 21/02/13

Hi, I have had a problem whilst updating my N95 8gb and now it appears, I think, that the firmware version I have is an older one than I had previously, but there isn't anything newer showing as availaable. I have 35,0.001. I am sure that the last time I had a problem, after it was "flashed", the firmware I had installed by the shop was this and then when I got home and went to restore my files, there was a new update available on line. The rreason I say this is that the icons and colours etc are like the version installed by the shop, about 1 year ago and when I updated the software everything was different. If what I am saying is correct, does anyone know if this newer firmware update has now been withdrawn or can anyone throw any light on the subject as I am a little confused! Thanks

If your N95 8GB is RM-320 the last available firmware for all product codes is v35.0.001. Using restore via Nokia Suite can only reset your individual personalisation settings.

Hi there, hope this message gets to the high-level employees of the company.
Why on earth would you people in R&D develop a full fledged computer, the flagship of Nokia Nseries phones, that can fit in the palm of your motherloving hand, and only include 64mb of memory.
I understand that maybe the N95 life cycle might be coming to an end (or has it ended?), and so you corrected the first mistake by releasing the same N95(8gb) but this time, someone in R&D must of had an epiphany and made the right choice to include 128mb of RAM.
But what about us, the good ol' N95 people? We have a crippled device.
People might argue that we are the poor early adopters a.k.a the losers. But I refuse to declare so, as it is not the case. The same phone the N95(8gb) was released 2 holy years later, with the exact same specifications and functionality! Except for the built-in 8gb (we have the sandisk micro 8gb), and slightly bigger battery, oh and the screen.
Just look around these forum, and other forums and see how much memory related problem everybody is having. Searching on google for this phrase: Memory Full close applications try again returns a lot of results related to the n95.
Now I know a multi-billion company's got to make a living, and handing out free upgrades doesn't hurt their pocket, but they won't do it because, let's face it, it didn't become a multi-billion company relying on charity work, so considering this and the whole rant above, I wish to say this:
Can Nokia give the option for N95 owners to send over their N95 and get a memory upgrade for a fee (cost of upgrade plus S/H). I repeat yes NOT free, but a fee. I am willing to pay a price to get it upgraded (if at all possible). As I'm not willing to pay for the new 8gb or maybe the n96, since they are pretty much all similar, except for the memory issue.
Yes, that is all I have to say. Please someone consider it, *if technically possible*. And if ever considered, please put a reasonable price tag on it (not to be touchy, but I'm also not paying the same price of the N95 just to get a memory module upgraded).
Thanks for listening. And hope we arrive at a solution that is favorable to both the customer and company (which never does happen, but a man can dream no?)
PS: And just to say, my brother has the N95 8gb, so I played with it profusely, so if anyone wants to say or (pardon the language) **bleep** how the new n95{8gb) is radically superior than the original n95, you fan boys can please do so, but do it on another thread.

That memory is for storage.
The memory he is referring to is the SDRAM that you need for running programs and multi-tasking.
The N95-1 has 64mb of SDRAM which was problematic on earlier firmware versions. This issue was addressed in the v20 firmware by introducing demand paging which freed up more ram and improved performance all round.
The N95-2(8GB) and the N82 have 128mb of SD RAM which makes these phones perform better than the N95-1.

My N95 review

It’s almost a year now that I was waiting for this magnificent piece of technology, I mean 5 megapixel camera, 3.5G, WLAN, S60…what could you ask for more? Surely the N93 turned heads with its twisting and turning but this baby did more than that.
So let’s see my first impression after I opened the box…it looked exactly like those ads we see everyday on the highway or on the internet, only smaller and better looking.
I saw a huge screen with QVGA resolution and 16 million colours, 13 main keys including a joy-pad, a stylishly placed camera popping out of the housing, a speaker, and that infamous Nokia N sign.
On the right side of the phone I see something that reminds me of the N73, not just the colour, but those blue backlighten keys. Up and down, gallery, autofocus and camera buttons and also a “chrome” speaker grill with 12 holes.
On the left side there is another speaker grill and a special 3.5mm jack of which I will speak about later, it also has an infrared cover and the microSD slot, very nicely built on the cover and easy to remove.
On the back we obviously find that awesome Carl Zeiss lens 5 megapixel camera with DVD recording and a powerful flash and even a stylish shutter. You also find the battery cover, which contains a BL-5F 950 MaH battery, same as the N93.
The top part has simply a ON/OFF/Profiles button while the bottom has a charger input, a miniUSB port and a microphone.
The phone is very thick, 21mm. We can compare it to the massive 7710 but its quite light for its kind, especially without the battery. The weight is 120g, it’s 99mm long and 53mm wide.
The main keypad feels weird for people who are used to Nokia’s soft keys. The soft keys are still there but they are made real thin as there are Menu and Multimedia keys next to them, so if you’re not careful, you will press the wrong buttons but eventually times cures everything.
Time to slide the cover up and uncover an ergonomic keypad. This keypad is rather small for such a big space, but it’s not an issue, because the keys and modelled in such a 3D shape that it’s actually comfortable and pleasant to play with them. There is a line dividing the first row of keys from the rest, I don’t know why though. The GPS module is under the # key and the lock slide sensor is in the middle of the first row of keys. There is sort of a wall that looks like a cover of the phone: between the keypad and the cover there is a big space and you can rest your fingers there, quite nice and stylish I would say.
The keypad lightning is done very well, there are lines of blue light coming between the keys when it’s dark and it gives the phone that futuristic look. The lightning of the LCD is also done very well, a very bright screen but still a perfect contrast.
This slider phone got something I’ve never seen on a phone of its shape: the base is huge and the top slide is thin as a needle. But moving on to the other slide, I notice that when opening the slide, it makes an ugly and loud voice, oppposite of when closing the phone. Turning the phone on the pther way, activates the landscape mode. They multimedia keys on the left side of the phone aren’t keys, they feel like a touchpad, you can’t see them, they are flat, a stylish manouvre and an ergonomic choice, they are also blue backlit. When turning the phone to landscape mode triggers the multimedia menu which can be customized, and pressing the play button activates the music player. The screen’s rotation is quite fast and it doesn’t usually crash.
And then, there’s that camera shutter. Just like in a proper camera, sliding the shutter down activates camera mode, even if the keypad is locked, and only this way the right side keys will light up.
What to expect from this Symbian OS9.2S60 V3 with FP1? Oh well, looking from the past this OS seemed to be advancing to an extreme, possibly outlining Windows itself! But no…9.2 isnt that great unfortunately, perhaps I’m owner of a young version of it, my phone has v10.0.0.18 on it, and it behaves quite well in general, although no AGPS or FOTA on this version yet.
On the waiting screen we have that old S60 GUI with the active desktop, WLAN status, shortcuts, operator, signal, battery, clock and the selected profile. We head to the menu and see the 4x3 assembly with animated icons or the choice of list view. There are 3 folders: tools, applications and office. There is a little tool called Search and was built in conjunction with Windows Live, some marketing from the Microsoft guys I guess. There’s also a Maps application which I will talk about later.
When you enter Settings you can see everything much more organised and clear, more functions, practicaly everything is connected to the Settings program, even the Themes.
The GPS Data application tells you the Latitude, Longitude, Precision, Altitude, Altitude Precision and Speed, and on the other tab you can find averages and bearing (compass). Then there is the actual maps application. You must have your country’s maps installed, as in doesn’t come with every country, unfortunately most African countries aren’t there which is bad for me as I’m somewhat an explorer. Another disadvantage is that voice navigation is costly. You can see roads, petrol stations, define and save places with the application. The search button doesn’t work well as my searches always return no results, and the GPS takes quite long to startup. The latest firmware version (12) offers Assisted-GPS but that will need some sort of internet connection. The voice navigation cost 106$ for 3 years.
The web browser is very advanced, letting you open different windows, offerring minimaps and a mouse cursor, quite lovely. It also plays Javascript and flash animations.
The music player improved a lot, let’s you search for music, shiws album art and has fantastic visualizations. It has 6 predefined equalizers and you can change the settings on 5 of them. There is a modern multi functional headset device of which I will talk about later on.
In the Office folder you can find a Zip application, I wonder what does…There is also a Video Centre application which streams/downloads videos from different sources like Reuters.
When it comes to connectivity, the N95 is king. Starting with Bluetooth 2.0, transfers at full speed and up to 6 devices at the same time. Followed by the old infrared system, and then the ever-growing Wireless LAN, which let’s you easily access internet and join networks. Unfortunately you cannot create networks with other phones.
Then there’s our lovely HSDPA or 3.5G. Fast browsing and downloading at 1.8mbps, just awesome. If that doesn’t work, there’s 3G, EDGE, and EGPRS which is an advanced class of GPRS.
There’s also a miniUSD port which when connected with a cable provides Mass Storage, PC Suite, Media Player and Image Print options. Of course Mass Storage won’t activate if you got a theme or an application running from the memory card.
As I said before, I would like to especially talk about that 3.5mm jack on steroids. Normal jacks offer just a two channel input or output. This one has 3 channels, both input and output at the same time, which is a wonderful connection by Nokia, I haven’t seen it or atlease noticed it anywhere else, so for me, these small details count a lot. This special jack helps with the audio controller and also makes way for TV-Out. It can be used normally and connected to stereo systems.
Now it’s time for the camera, it offers 0.3mp, 0.8mp, 2mp, 3m and 5mp resolutions. There are options such as: capture mode; flash option; timer; sequence mode; light compensator; white balance; colour tone; ISO sensitivity; contrast; and sharpness.
Video mode at 640x480 30fps has options of mode, white balance and colour tone.
What was really missing here is optical zoom as its digital zoom is unfocused. The front CIF camera works poorly as it’s only for video calls.
The flash is very powerful, in totally dark situations, it looks like daylight, especially indoors.
The sound on this device is great, 3D Stereo speakers offering a loud quality music output, even as a loudspeaker for calls it behaves perfectly. Unfortunately the included stereo earphones are really soft, so you might have to get a new pair. The memory card included should be enough to store about 300 songs, it’s a 1GB. The music can be converted through PC Suite, but this phone supports most music formats so it won’t be necessary unless you wish to change the bitrate.
Now any phonehas faults, and the N95 is no exception: the lights on the multimedia keys off during music playback, not nice if you are driving at night and want to pause the song as you won’t be able to see the keys. The battery doesn’t last long, 950mah is very light, and if the default screen saver isn’t set to an acceptable time range, the phone will die very quicly as the screen consumes and extreme amount of electricity. If you use the phone moderately, let’s say for internet and music, you will end you charging it every night or so.
The top slide isn’t assembled properly, you can see some cracks and openings on the sides, and white light escapes minimally, this tells us that the phone is very fragile.
The sildes makes a huge noise as I said before, this problem doesn’t exist on the competitors, and Nokia failed there.
If you have a third party 3D theme running the phone will considerably slow down, especially on typing.
When playing Java built games, the phone’s battery lasts long enough, but when playing SISX games that push the powerful Graphics IC to its limit, the battery drains quite badly.
Java applications all drain the RAM very badly and the phone crashes if you try to multitask, making me restart the phone, and that can get irritating for heavy users like me, as you will have to restart 5+ times per day.
The phone comes with a good audio controller for earphones or an external audio output. The controller features a microphone, a 3.5mm stereo jack, a holder, a security key lock, volume up and down, answer button, play, forward and backward buttons.
The provided earphones have an extremely short left ear cable and a long right ear cable which is not very comfortable.
A TV-Out cable is also provided.
Advantages: 5mp Carl Zeiss camera with Autofocus; DVD-like recording; Powerful flash; loud speakers; 3.5mm jack with 3 channels; HSDPA; GPS; S60 OS9.2
Disadvantages: Weak battery; GPS takes long to startup; OS is still young in some aspects.

Different N95 in Europe and China?

I am Dutch and working in Shanghai for the coming years.
I recently bought a N95 in Shanghai to replace my N70 which I bought in Holland. Great, BUT:
1. I cannot get any maps from China downloaded?
2. Latest firmware according to Nokia is 20....., but when I check mine I am told that my firmware version 17....is the latest?
3. So I cannot use N-gage which requires 20...
I tried multiple times to get an answer via The Benelux email contact address. In general I DON'T get any response and if I get a response the answer is 'no, that is not possible' while I each time kindly ask for an explanation or reason or solution.
CONCLUSION: At this very moment I am extremely unhappy with the "service" Nokia is giving. They really have to improve their customer service. If Nokia want's to be a global player, they should be prepared for my situation, which to my opinion is not so unique. Can anybody help me further with an answer to the above mentioned problems? Hello, im currently in the process of buying an N95-1. THe thingis the seller doesnt know if its the real one, and he can't find the charger so he gave me the back info to see if its real or not.

Nokia Care- N95 Support

I am having lots of problems with my N95. The handset keeps on shutting down or freezing without applications running. The handset is very unreliable and I feel I must reinstall my primary SIM into my trusty N80. For example if I try to accesss my voice mailbox by pressing and holding button 1 , the phone shuts down! I am constantly restarting the phone, sometimes having removed the battery for a few seconds.If i recieve a SMS, this often causes a problem.
I bought my N95 SIM free and am running software version 12 with a 2Gb memory card. I have had several S60 phones, so I am well aware of their limitations, but this is the worst one.
I have tried to contact Nokia Care on 0845 0455555. They keep you hanging on for ages, trying to speak to an Engineer ,only to be re-directed, before being cut off. They even promised to call me back, but they only said that to get rid of me!
So I tried to contact Nokia Care by e-mail. I got a standard computer generated reply, and it was obvious nobody ever bothered to read my e-mail!
All I want is to speak to someone about my problems to double check I am not doing anything wrong before I return the handset. Does anyone know who and how it is possible to speak with a qualified Nokia technician?
