Java Server Threading Problems

Cross-posted at: http://www.java-forums.org/networking/41574-server-threading-confusion.html with no answers as of this edit.
I'm very new to networking in java, and it's been a few months since I last did any major programming. I decided to try out networking, and I'm beginning to get a feel for it, but I've jumped in to trying to make a server for a multiplayer game, and I've gotten a bit stuck about how to do it, specifically on how to use threads to take care of my clients, and still be able to keep track of the threads so I can have the server send out info to them about where characters are, when the threads should close because someone wants to log out, etc.
If anyone could help me out that would be awesome :D
Here's some code:
import java.net.*;
import java.io.*;
public class GameThread extends Thread // this is the actual thread class I made
  public Socket socket;
  public DataInputStream in;
  public DataOutputStream out; // a socket and two I/O streams for sending ints
  public GameThread(Socket socket) // typical constructor for getting socket
    try
      this.socket = socket;
      in = new DataInputStream(socket.getInputStream());
      out = new DataOutputStream(socket.getOutputStream());
    catch(Exception e)
      e.printStackTrace();
  public Socket getSocket() // I don't believe this is ever used. Ignore it.
    return socket;
  public void print() // Used to make sure the thread is active/knows about the socket
    System.out.println("GameThread says: " + socket);
  public void run()
    while(true)
}Here's the class I use to manage the threads, or, at least, where I attempt to do so.
import java.io.*;
import java.util.ArrayList;
import java.net.*;
public class Threader
  public ArrayList clients;
  public ArrayList<GameThread> threads; // GameThread is the thread class above
  public Threader()
    threads = new ArrayList<GameThread>(); //constructor for this arraylist
  public void updateClientCount(ArrayList<Socket> clients) // this method works
    this.clients = clients; // it's not the problem.
  public void openThreads() //Here's probably where problems begin
    if(clients.size() > threads.size()) // this is to make the threads arraylist
      int f = clients.size()-threads.size();//equal length compared to clients arraylist
      while(f > 1)
     threads.add(null);
     f--;
    if(clients.size() < threads.size()) //same as above, just if threads is bigger
      threads.subList(clients.size(),(threads.size()-1)).clear();
    for(int h=0;h<clients.size();h++) //Here: for each client spot
      if(threads.get(h) == null) //Threads is tested in that spot to see if there's
      {              // A thread there
     GameThread gt = new GameThread((Socket)clients.get(h));
     threads.add(gt); //and if there isn't then it makes one
     gt.start(); // and starts it, but I guess this isn't happening as I want
      } // it to because in the method below none of the GameThreads print socket info
  public void print() //used to make sure the Threader/GameThread(s) is getting the info
    for(int y = 0;y<clients.size();y++)
      System.out.println("Threader says: " + clients.get(y));
    for(int x = 0;x<threads.size();x++)
      threads.get(x).print();
}If anyone could help me find what is going on, or maybe (probably) I'm going about making a server wrong (I have another class with a serversocket and all, but I don't believe there are any bugs in it so it isn't included in here), so if I could get help that would be awesome.
Thanks guys!

Your thread management is back to front. All you need is a new thread per client, started every time you accept a new Socket. When you do that, if you want to manage them, enter the new thread into a collection, and when it exits remove it. But you normally don't need to keep track of client threads. You may want to keep track of client Sockets, in which case you should maintain a collection of Sockets on the same basis.

  • Client Server Thread Problems

    When I invoke the method getNextJob() in my Client.
    This sends a this message (CLNT::GETNEXTJOB) to the server which then triggers the Server to invoke the corresponding method and send back another message. (Which as far as I know it does).
    My problem is this, when I run the getNextJob() method a thread is supposed to be created and ran in parallel which listens for the Servers reply and unfortunately this thread keeps telling me that its get a NullPointerException (specifically at my Socket connection clientSocket). If I uncomment out this.openConnection(); within my run() method it works BUT I get no response from my server even though it is telling me it has sent a message.
    I hope you can help.

    I have made some modifications based on the above information but I have hit another brick wall.
    The below code returns this to the output pane:
    run:
    CLIENT:  Building GUI
    CLIENT:  Get Next Job Invoked
    Never Reached Statement Within getNext StartValue
    CLIENT:  Listerner Loaded
    CLIENT:  Opening Connection
    CLIENT ->CLNT::GETNEXTJOB
    STATEMENT NEVER REACHED
    null
    ErrorWhat you can see is the CLIENT sets up the connection and invokes the Listener thread (run). When this is ran it hits the while loop and even when a non null value is returned via the .ReadLine() as shown via the second value in the output pane {'null', 'Error'} it doesn't exit the loop.
    Any ideas why this would be.

  • Java Multi Thread problem.

    Hi guys . . . i need so much help. i am trying to implement matrix multiplication using threads.
    For some reason when iam multiplying the matrices i have the threads waiting too long.. they wait wait wait.. then do the job and then wait wait wait.

  • Sun Java System Web Server 6.1 SP3 service-j2ee threads problem

    Hi,
    Sorry my english.
    I'm an intermediate Java programmer and a newbie in
    the Sun's web servers world.
    I'm doing an evaluation of an web applicaction
    written in Java Servlets that is
    supposed to have a leaking threads problem. We use
    SunOS 5.9 (... sun4u sparc SUNW,UltraAX-i2) and
    JVM 1.5 Update 4 (the problem is presented too
    in SunOS 5.8 and JVM 1.4.2_04).
    We have seen, thanks to 'prstat' (PROCESS/NLWP) a
    increasing thread's growing in one of the process
    that correspond to our web server instance (I'm sure I'm
    looking the right process). I have checkout the source
    code and it seems like the app doesn't have threads
    problems. I have used the Netbeans Profiler and I see a
    high number of threads called service-j2ee-x that grows
    in congestion moments and never disappear.
    Anybody could help me with suggestions?
    Thank you very much.

    Elvin,
    Thankyou, yes I am unfamiliar with debugging Java apps. I got the web server Java stack trace and I have passed this on to the developer.
    The web server finally closes the socket connection after the total connections queued exceeds 4096.

  • RemoteException: 111 java.rmi.ServerError: Error occurred in server thread

    Hi,
    I'm just new to the RMI field of JAVA. I'm trying to write a program that import the math.jar file in the server side. And the client end can invoke the methods of math.jar and get the value.
    I got the error messages as below:
    RemoteException: 111 java.rmi.ServerError: Error occurred in server thread; nested exception is:
         java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/mathwhizz/Heron
    It can work well if I use source classes(*.class) directly instead of importing math.jar. The failure only happened when I try to make use of jar file. Thus I guess my setup and configuration should be ok. Is there anything I should be very careful if I try to run RMI and import a jar file in the program of server side ?
    Do I need to use JNLP and web start application in this issue?
    I'm appreciated for your responses...thanks...
    Sincerely,
    Brandon

    I've got a problem with rmi, when I launch my server, I have this error:
    Erreur du remote: java.rmi.ServerError: Error occurred in server thread; nested exception is:
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: com/borland/dx/dataset/DataSetData
    Help me please

  • Problem with JDBC cc with new java server node

    Hi experts,
    I have the next situation I hope you can help me.
    I created an additional java server node in a PI 7.1 system, this because helpful performance.
    Bought nodes started ok.
    The problem was when I saw in the RW that all the jdbc channels was in status ??? and in the Short Log "not adapter engine assigned".
    I did the complete refresh cache en the SXI_CACHE.
    I read that I can restart the Adapter Engine, unfortunately I don't have a System Administrator. Would you tell me how to restart the adapter engine?
    If anybody have other option, please tell me.
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks Spantaleoni.
    I'm doing a restart of the instance right now.
    I complement the error. When I start or stop the cc has the next error.

    Dear Barrie,
    I am using Fedora Core 3 Linux.
    The Tarantella Secure Global Desktop Enterprise Edition(4.0) have 20
    concurrent user license.
    Normally, about 10 users would access the application through Secure
    Global Desktop Enterprise Edition.
    Could I use the license of Tarantella EE 4 to upgrade to Tarantella EE 4.1

    Hi Ng
    Sorry, I forgot to ask whether you are using Solaris or Linux? I don't
    think Solaris has an upper limit for this value but I'm less sure about
    Linux. I would make sure all tta processes have been terminated and try
    again.
    My feeling is that you shouldn't really be using 4096 files in a single
    process -- not unless you're system is very very large. In 4.0 there is
    a problem with the 1.5 JVM holding on to references that keep files open for
    longer than is necessary and potentially leads to a loss of service by
    keeping too many files open. 4.1 has a fix for this. I think there is a
    good chance this may be your problem aswell.

    Hi Ng,
    Yes, you've run out of files. But, this ulimit thing is already done by
    the SGD EE start up files. What you can do is edit the tuning properties
    of the server in ArrayManager. By default, this should be 4096 but you
    can try increasing this here. You may also change the value of
    rlim_fd_max in /etc/system on Solaris, although the value given in the
    arraymanager should override the setting in /etc/system.
    It's unusual to use this many files, you may be seeing a file descriptor
    leak that was in 4.0 and may be causing this problem, the problem is
    subtle and doesn't necessarily effect all users. I recommend you upgrade
    to 4.1 though.

    I think the "Too many open files" may give you a clue.
    Try by editing the SGD EE startup files (either under /etc/init.d or in
    the /opt/tarantella/bin/scripts folder) and adding the
         ulimit -n 4096
    statement. Of course, 4096 is just an example; find your "maximum number
    of open file descriptors" limit and raise it accordingly.

  • Aplication server thread pool problem

    I'm using sun app server 8.
    After some time from starting (and using) the server, it stops responding to clients.
    When I change the max number of threads on server the number of clients it can serve before hanging folows the change. So I guess that some threads are not recycled.
    But, I can't get full thread dump to see what's happening.
    Also I can't get any thread pool monitoring information through asadmin.
    (I can see that EJB's are all removed successfuly)
    Any suggestions.
    Thanks in advance.

    First of all, thank you for helping me.
    The client wasn't making problems, but server did. (I didn't said that I use the app. server on XP.)
    For now I solved the problem by installing the new beta 2004Q4. It works fine now, it also has some thread monitoring in web console...
    I was getting this, when I tried to monitor the thread-pool (it is set on HIGH):
    asadmin> get -m server.thread-pools.thread-pool.thread-pool-1.*
    No matches resulted from the wildcard expression.
    CLI137 Command get failed.
    If it means anything this is what I was getting when I do ctrl-break. (this thread dump stays the same even after server stops responding...)

  • Java server program on Linux problem

    Ok, i've written a simple java server using java.nio and have tested it on my windows machine. Then people can connect and it works as it should.
    However, when i run the server on my linux box it starts as it should, but no users can connect to it. Its like the connections never come through to the java program... What can cause this? Some firewall stuff etc?
    I've tested running a server written in C on the same port (both the java and the c server uses TCP) and then people can connect to it without any problems.
    So it seems to be some security thing in java, or in linux in connection with java programs.

  • Question on java.lang.Thread "starting problems"

    hi everybody
    i've just little trouble running a tiny program which uses Threads.
    maybe there's a misunderstanding from my side:
    About my code:
    01  public class MyThread extends Thread {
    02
    03    String any_string = null;
    04
    05    public MyThread(String param) {
    06      any_string = param;
    07      this.start();
    08    }
    09
    10    public void run() {
    11      while(!isInterrupted()) {
    12        System.out.println(" > This Thread is running!");
    13        // any other operation...
    14        try {
    15        sleep(1000);
    16      }
    17      catch(Exception e) {}
    18    }
    19  }This is a Thread's code similar to those you can find it in the java.lang.Thread Documentation or in the java Tutorial.
    In my example I got a IllegalThreadStateException in codeline 07 which means (compare to java.lang.Thread Documentation) that the code tries to start the Thread while the Thread is still running.
    I always thought a Thread will not start itself.
    I thought (and that's the way, i red it in the documentation) that the constructor of a Thread only allocates the new Thead-Object.
    But by constructing MyThread I got the descripted exception (i'm beginning to repeat myself...). The "funny" thing on this exception is that the Thread at least IS running but there could be no Object allocated
    01  ...
    02  /**
    03   * construction of a new Object of the class MyThread.
    04   * test will be auto-started by the MyThread constructor
    05   */
    06  MyThread test = new MyThread("any-string");
    07  ...
    08  test.anyMethodOfClassMyThread();This little code generates a java.lang.NullPointerException in line 08 (when trying to access the object of class MyThread). Even after the application exits (in case of this exception), the run()-Method of MyThread generates its Text-Output " > This Thread is running!". argh
    Does anyone see my mistake / misunderstanding??
    It's really frustrating if you are sitting in front of your pc and can't get the reason why your prog is generating that "bullshit" (ok... i know - it's only generatting the bullshit I told it to generate :( )
    Any suggestions or ideas
    thanks,
    Thof

    Well now, I don't get a NullPointerException, when I try to call a method of MyThread. Here's your code, with slight modifications by me:
    public class MyThread extends Thread {
        String any_string = null;
        public MyThread(String param) {
            any_string = param;
            this.start();
        public String getAnyString(){
            return any_string;
        public void run() {
            while(!isInterrupted()) {
                System.out.println(" > This Thread is running!");
                try {
                    sleep(1000);
                catch(Exception e) {}
    }To test the app I wrote this class:
    public class TestMyThread {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            MyThread temp = new MyThread("Hello World");
            System.out.println(temp.getAnyString());
    }Now it does print out the correct "Hello World".
    Your other problem of the thread not shutting down is because it is not a daemon thread. To solve this you will need to add this Thread to a ThreadGroup and set the ThreadGroup as a Daemon group. (see ThreadGroup::setDaemon() )
    Or you can put a little boolean in your while loop and break out when you change the value of the boolean. Then when you want to shut down you simply change the boolean
    Hope this helps

  • Java Webstart application problem with TLS certificate revocation checks (Java 1.7.0_76)

    We have a problem with our Java Web Start Application regarding the TLS certificate revocation check:
    The application is running on a server within a wide area network which is separated from the internet.
    The application users have access to the WAN, and also access to the internet over some corporate proxy/firewall.
    The user has to enter, for example "https://my-site.de/myapp/ma.jnlp" within a webbrowser or could also call  "javaws https://my-site.de/myapp/ma.jnlp" to start the application client.
    The webserver has a certificate from a trusted certificate authority. This certificate seems to be ok, the browser is even configured to perform OCSP status check.
    The application files are signed with a certificate from another trusted certificate authority. This certificate seems also to be ok. Regarding this certificate there
    are no problems with certificate revocation checks.
    The problem is, while starting the application client there is a message box which tell us something like "the connection to this website ist not trustworthy",
    "Website: https://my-site.de:80", and something about an invalid certificate, meaning the webserver certificate.
    Obviously the jvm runtime, which is executed on the users workstation, tries to perform a revocation check for the webservers certificate, but this fails because
    it cannot fetch the certificate under https://my-site.de:80.
    The application will execute without further problems after that message but the users are very concerned about the "invalid" certificate, so here are my questions:
    - Why is the application trying to get the webserver certificate over Port 80. Our application developers told me, there is no corresponding statement. Calling this address
      has to fail while "https://my-site.de:443" or "https://my-site.de" would not have a problem.
    - Is there a way to make the application go on without performing a tls revocation check? I mean, by adjusting the application sourcecode and not by configuring the users Java Control Panel.
      While disabling the TLS Certificate Revocation check in the Java Control Panel, the Webstart Application executes without a warning message, but this is not a workable solution for
      our users.
    It would be great if someone can help me with a hint so i can send our developers into the right direction;-)
    Many thanks!

    Hi,
    I had the same problem. In my machine, path was having jre1.1.7 before my jdk 1.4. So it was picking up from jre1.1.7.
    Java was happy when I moved my jdk1.4 path to the beginning of the path variable.
    Hope this helps you.
