Java vs. C/C++ binary size comparison

I am looking for a paper or study that gives a comparison of the byte-code size of various Java and C++ programs. Specifically, I am trying to compare native code implementations for different machine arcithectures vs. doing the same thing in a Java program. I am not interested in speed comparisons.

Java class files tend to be very very very very small, however the JVM must be implemented in C, and heavyweight components rely upon the underlying operating system's C implementations of such visual components. Class files are more modular than Executables, and simply don't have to include entire gigantic libraries of information. You can think of everything as being more like a .DLL than compiling all of the same functionality directly into the file. The speed tends to rely on the Virtual machine you're using, just as C and C++ programs tend to rely on what they were compiled for, and what libraries they are using to display their GUI. There are many studies about the speed of java byte code in relation to native C/C++ code. However, you should realize that the java compiler does a lot of automagical bounds checking, and prevents a great deal of unsafe optimizations. You can find many native compilers, and many virtual machines that will allow you to turn off these checks, and then you can fairly compare the speed of byte code with that of native code.

  • LiveCycle Workbench ES2 - "Java(TM) Platform SE binary has stopped working" Error

    Hi,
I am getting this error when I try to create a new process o open an existing process.
"Java(TM) Platform SE binary has stopped working"
The only option is to click on a "Close" button and end the LC Workbench ES2 program.
Also, when I try to open an existing form, it displays 'garbage' - a screenfull of control unrecognizable characters - instead of the form itself.
When this error comes up, I also get a pop-up window with a list of log entries / errors (please see attached: Java Platform SE binary has stopped working.jpg)
    Environment:
Windows Vista Ultimate running on HP Desktop (e9107c Intel CORE 2 Quad Processor withy 8 GB RAM, 750GB HDD)
Downloaded and installed the Trial Version of LiveCycle ES2 package (Windows JBoss version)
The LiveCycle ES2 server is installed properly and is working with the following services. Are there any missing services?
LiveCycle Output ES2, LiveCycle Rights Management ES2, LiveCycle PDF Generator ES2 Evaluation, LiveCycle Process Management ES2, LiveCycle Workspace ES2, Applications and Services, LiveCycle ContentServices ES2, LiveCycle Forms ES2
I already had Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended 9.2 and the associated LiveCycle Designer instaleld prior to installing the Trial of LC ES2.
Basesd on the installation insttructions, I deleted the Designer ES from my Acrobat Pro Extended and instaleld the LC Workbench ES2.
Now I don't see a seprate entry for the LC Designer ES2 anymore on my Start >> Programs.
And th newly installed LC Workbench is not working
Any help in making the workbench 'work' is greatly appreciated.
Are there any tests we can do to troubleshoot this?
    Thanks.

Here is some additional information that may be helpful in identifying the cause for this problem.
Here is the Exact ERROR :
Java (TM) Platform SE binary has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.
    Button: "Close Program".
On clicking that button, the error window goes away; the main LC WB ES2 program also closes; but a long error window appears. The full screenshot was attached in my original message. The top few lines are reproduced below.
    JVMterminated. Exit code=255

Adobe LiveCycle Workbench ES2 has ONE problem
    1. Program Starts properly
    2. I am able to login to the LCES2 server
    3. I am able to Browse and select sample projects
    4. I am ble to create an Application, a folder, and a Form
    5. I am able to invoke the LC Designer ES2  from within Workbench (while creating a form)
    6. I am able to "invoke" an existinmg sample process in a web browser (not within workbench environment)
    The main problem is...
I am NOT able to create a new process or open existing process using workbench.
Since it gives Java Platform SE error, I checked the versions of various Java Run Time Environments on my pc.
Properties of javaw.exe in different folders:
    1. My Computer's JRE (common to all apps)

I tried to use the same versions of JRE in all these folders; that didn't work..
I hope someone can throw more light on this and find the real cause.

  • Java.sql.SQLException: Statement cache size has not been set

    All,
I am trying to create a light weight SQL Layer. It uses JDBC to connect to the database via weblogic. When my application tries to connect to the database using JDBC alone (outside of weblogic) everything works fine. But when the application tries to go via weblogic I am able to run the Statement objects successfully but when I try to run PreparedStatements I get the following error:
java.sql.SQLException: Statement cache size has not been set
    at weblogic.rjvm.BasicOutboundRequest.sendReceive(BasicOutboundRequest.java:108)

    at weblogic.jdbc.rmi.internal.ConnectionImpl_weblogic_jdbc_wrapper_PoolConnection_oracle_jdbc_driver_OracleConnection_812_WLStub.prepareStatement(Unknown Source)
i have checked the StatementCacheSize and it is 10. Is there any other setting that needs to be implemented for this to work? Has anybody seen this error before? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

    java.security.InvalidKeyException: Illegal key size
So there are at least 4 certificates in your server's truststore that are causing issues.
Is your weblogic server using CustomIdentityAndStandardTrust? If so, the the keystore is the $JAVA_HOME/jre/lib/security/cacerts
You should familiarize yourself with keytool ( in $JAVA_HOME/bin ) and consider removing entries from your trust store unless you absolutely need them and are willing to trust any cert signed by them. There's been a thread about some newer Certificate Authorities ( CAs ) that were included as part of a recent java upgrade which have caused similar "unknown OID" issues.
For your specific endpoint, you can use your browser to invoke the services' wsdl; this will cause your browser to fetch the certificate from that server
You can then see what CA is used to sign it. Then see whether that CA is in your truststore.
There is also a thread with a very simple class to test the SSL handshake:

    Please can samebody help me?

I find the solution to this problem.
In the LODConfig.xml file I have:
    <readPartitionFromBlob>true</readPartitionFromBlob>
                   <partitionBlobTranslator>oracle.spatial.network.lod.PartitionBlobTranslator11g</partitionBlobTranslator>
but when I change it to
    <readPartitionFromBlob>true</readPartitionFromBlob>
                   <partitionBlobTranslator>oracle.spatial.network.lod.PartitionBlobTranslator11gR2</partitionBlobTranslator>
The application starts without the obove mentioned error.

    Hi,
java.lang.IndexOutOfBoundsException occurs when the runtime environment tries to access the index of an array which doesn't exist. (Index 2 = third entry, you only seem to have 2 entries though).
Are you certain, the Pernr's Infotype is maintained correctly?
Could you post the entire error log from NWA so we can see the JAVA Stack? Maybe the error is nested.
Check Notes 1356222 and 1359671 as well. They might solve your error right away.

  • Java.sql.SQLException: Io exception: Size Data Unit (SDU) mismatch

    Hi Experts,
I'm encountering this error in my SAP-JDBC (Oracle) interface. The error message doesn't say much but the query being sent from SAP is working when executed directly into the database. I'm using thin JDBC driver for this connection.

Appreciate your insights regarding this. Thanks a lot!
    Mark

I'm encountering this error in my SAP-JDBC (Oracle) interface. The error message doesn't say much but the query being sent from SAP is working when executed directly into the database. I'm using thin JDBC driver for this connection.
    Welcome to the forum!
Please get into the habit of SHOWING us what you are doing instead of just telling us.
So don't say 'the query being sent'; SHOW us the query being sent.
And don't say 'thin JDBC driver'; SHOW us the actual name and version of the JDBC jar file you are using.
For JDBC issues you should also provide the full 4 digit Oracle version (select * from V$VERSION) and the full Java version that you are using.
When you can reproduce the problem by using a simple set of Java code it helps if you post the code so we can try to reproduce the problem.
A search of the web shows that there have been reports that upgrading to ojdbc6.jar resolves the problem but for other uses it seemed to be a case of several threads using the same connection.

Looks like you have conflict with your java home and you are running 2 different JREs. Keep the latest and try launching EM console again and post the exception if you get any.

I have not tried generating the text file. I will try this scenario as well.
Actually, I wanted to understand the root cause of this issue. I am using 4 sqlunloads tools in a package, all of which are generating csv reports from similar kind of tables with similar number of records. 3 of the sqlunloads are executing successfully, only the last 1 is failing with the above issue.
We also checked the ODI server folder size, it is 1 GB. So I still not very sure what is the root cause.
    Any suggestion is appreciated.

    Hi,
    I am using Jdeveloper 11.1.1.5.

Can someone suggest me what can be done to fix this issue.
When we are trying to create a new row in the table through EO, we have overrided the default Create method in EOImpl. We are getting this error only in a particular scenario. It is working fine for the other VOs created for this EO and also working for a particular scenario in the same VO.
I would also like to mention if "Application module pooling" is turned off in AM configurations, it is working fine although it is bringing new errors. So turning this configuration off will not help and is also not an ideal solution.
Will creating a seperate VO for this scenario be any help?

  • Routeserver-java.lang.OutOfMemoryError:Requested array size exceeds VM limi

    Well,
When I started to try running routeserver, I was using "false" in <param-name>long_ids</param-name> (web.xml). When I tried to use "true", an OutOfMemoryError error was occuring. Now I know that "false" is wrong. So, I walked a bit more...
    The error now is:
09/02/03 15:25:29.547 web: Error initializing servlet

    Well,
I am using Router from 11g. The web.xml from 10g does not have logs_id parameter and servlet mapping.... May I add logs_id parameter in web.xml?
Here we have contract with oracle. But I could NOT find any thing about patchs for routeserver... I am downloading "configuration manager" to update my metalink. Could you tell me tip about where are routeserver patchs?
    Tks a lot,
    Daniel

    Vish,
You may want to try one of the Java forums, as your question is specific to the JDK/JRE, and nothing to do with JDev/ADF. {forum:id=937} might be a good starting place.
