Java won't work - possible proxy issues?

I was informed that one of our computers suddenly (from what I was told about 2 months ago) developed problems with Java. Said computer is on our dirty internet connection, so it's not readily checked or even updated. My colleagues looked at it, and evertually escalated the issue to me, since they couldn't figure it out. One specific website needs Java for some examinations, and it turned out Java just would present an error to the site.
After spending an afternoon at the location, testing with the Java verification applet on the Java website, and finding myself unable to correct the problem, I build myself a small test machine to see if I could recreate the problem on something local. Turns out, I can, which makes testing a lot easier. Do note: We want another site (which requires a heap of logins) to work, so I'm using the Java verification applet to get me a quicker and easier way to verify if Java works.
So, Got a clean install of Windows XP SP3, and updated to IE8. The machine is connected to the Internet through a proxy server based on FreeProxy which listens to port 2244 (note: this proxy has had NO changes in the aforementioned 2 months that I know of, or can trace within the proxy configuration). I can browse without any problems. Installed Java (7r51) on the system, and tried to verify the Java version.
Unable to verify if Java is installed and activated on your browser.
Ran all the Windows Updates (for XP, IE, .NET whatever version, and whatever more was available) Microsoft offers, just to make sure it's not in any of those. Still no go. Installed Google Chrome and Firefox to exclude the browser as a source of problems. None of the three browsers works with the Java verification applet, all resulting in the same message as stated above. Verified that Java is available in the browsers, and it is shown as available and active.
Deinstalled Java, reinstalled. Used JavaRA to remove and then reinstall. Pulled the security down to medium. Wiped the local cache files. There is no virusscanner installed, so that can't be it. Disabled the Windows Firewall to exclude that as a cause. Used a second machine with Windows 7 just to exclude the OS as a culprit. Verified the 'Enable Java in web browser' setting in the Java control applet. Played with the proxy settings and the security settings in IE and under the Java control panel. Wiped Java out, manually ran through the registry to kill references, and wiped all the Sun folders from all profiles, aswell as the Java install folder before reinstalling. Installed Java 6r43 just to make sure. Nothing helped.. The error keeps coming back, and the Java verification keeps failing.
The Java console which can help troubleshoot, seems to open while the Java icon shows up in the systemtray, but it quite rapidly (30 or 45 seconds) closes again, taking the Java console along with it, thus not giving me any logging to further see what's wrong here. So it seems Java is working, but runs into some problems along the way. About the only quick problems I spotted when I did manage to grab a copy of the log:
network: Cache entry not found [url:http://www.java.com/en/download/JavaDetection_applet.jnlp, version: null]
and
java.io.IOException: Server returned HTTP response code: 403 for URL: https://java.com/en/download/JavaDetection_applet.jnlp
My colleague noted that it did work on the other proxied network through the same proxy (just that that proxy is on a different NIC and listens to port 8080). We tried changing the proxy port for the network to 8080 on the actual PC on location, and found the problem remained. Just to make sure it worked on the other network, I reattached the PC to the other network, altered the proxy settings both under the IE options and Java control panel applet, only to see it exhibit the exact same behavior. So I'm dismissing my colleague, and assuming it has never really worked.
Most of the internet solutions I can find refer to changing the code of the applet, but since I'm using a sanctioned Oracle applet, and Oracle software, I suppose I can assume it's been programmed well, and tested properly. Besides that, as a user of Java I have no direct influence on the actual code being used, so all those solutions aren't really helping me any.
So I turn to this forum to see if anyone wants to have a guess at what is wrong here, and what I can do to either
1) Solve the issue
2) Provide some means to keep the Java console open or log to a file
3) Think of anything I haven't tried yet, that may have a positive impact on the issue.
Thanks in advance for your time, effort and help. Know that every response is already highly appreciated.

Thanks for the response...
I had a look about more logging on the proxy, and although http://www.handcraftedsoftware.org/index.php?page=faq&op=read&id=25 hints at a different program I might need to use (which has been removed of what I can see), the link http://www.handcraftedsoftware.org/index.php?page=faq&op=read&id=54 hints at there being some native logging I can use to verify what happens.
As such I located the log settings, and fired up the test system to see if I could determine some more from the logs (and exactly what those logs would entail). The log does provide some insight in what it pulls from the Java website, but doesn't show much in regards to what is going wrong:

At around that same time I got the following notice in the connection log, which does seem to hint at a problem somewhere:
#11004: WSANO_DATA: Valid name, no data record of requested type.  H:02424 F:'HCSNTSocket_ResolveHostName' A:'gethostbyname' T:'Return=11004.'
Other then that I have not received any other logs (despite me enabling all of them, or any other notice that may indicate the cause of the problem. I will be leaving the settings in the proxy in regards of logging, just to see if any other logs are going to crop up.
I did post this to the Proxy-forum too to see if someone could help in determining what exactly the log is saying.

  • Java won't work on proxy server!!!!

My company has recently implemented a proxy server. After this, all websites that use java don't work anymore. I have Web Proxy and Web Secure Procy configured correctly but when I enter a Java website I'm asked for user, password and domain, and even with this info the site won't open. Any ideas???

I have the same issue. We have important print production software that depends on Java running in a browser and it has stopped working with 10.5
This means that I cannot deploy 10.5 in a print production environment.
All our web traffic goes through our IIS proxy, and when accessing a Java site I get prompted for an NTLM password. It does not accept any valid passwords, but just re-prompts over and over. The same version of Safari on 10.4.11 works fine with Java as long as all the updates are loaded.
Proxy access in Mac OS X is continually an issue for us, as the current version of Safari cannot access any https sites through our proxy either. I've been forced to install Firefox for users who need access to https sites (which is almost all of them).
We've had issues with our IIS proxy on and off since way back at 10.3 where proxy support would go between working and not working with various patches. This, coupled with the fact that NTLM authentication is much more intrusive on Mac OS (with constant prompting and hassles with the keychain) than on Windows, causes major support headaches for us. I've tried various workarounds with using Authoxy and Squidman, and various keychain settings, but I'd prefer it if the system's built-in IIS proxy support would work better.
It's very frustrating because our IIS proxy has not been significantly changed in over 5 years, but our Macs go from working to not working continually as patches are released. Very poor.
I would love for this to be looked at at Apple, as Mac OS's own proxy panel does not even have as simple an option as "use this proxy server for all protocols" as found in IE on Windows or Firefox on all platforms. This means separate entries in the keychain for all protocols and a huge mess to support.

  • Pogo won't play games java won;t work with firefox

I was playing pogo and it came up to update Java. Did it and now can't play most of the games like canasta. Says java won't work with firefox.....it did before. try for 4 days not and no luck

Java is working properly. Still not loading games

  • [Solved] Startx won't work! Laptop issues.

Okay, here is what Ididin as much detail as possible.
Dual boot: Windws XP + Archlinux
    the partition is like this
    80 GB XP
    80 GB arch
         *10 GB root
         *70 GB /home
Video Card: nVidia Geforce Go 6100
Okay, so after I installed, I decided to and uncomment all available US repositories with HTTP on them, not FTP. Then I did a full system update, and got the latest nvidia drivers. So I run nvidia-xconfig,  got a little confused when it didn't work and I noticed /etc/X11/xorg.conf was missing. After a while I realized I forgot to download Xorg, once I ran the command it worked. I downloaded HAL, started it and it worked. Then I ran startx, and it wouldn't work. I went into the IRC channel, and tried showed all the errors I got, after a while I was told I shouldn't be using root under any circumstances and the first thing I should have done is create my user ID, which I did, then made myself a Sudoer. Obviously, the errors still appeared, no matter what I did with Xorg. -.-

    Yep carol.
    Nope I didn't install freetype.
Also, I noticed whenever I try to install nvidia I get an error that says these files already exist, and that there is a: Errors occured. No packages were upgraded. In a list of a bunch of files I can't even really list out at the moment.
Pacman -S nvidia gets me that error, when I tried reinstalling xorg, it worked fine. Even when I deleted the cache, and uninstalled files it had the same issue.
I was told to install the latest version available though (again). since I installed some version I got back in 2008 in December. But I've been too hesitant since I felt I might need one of those extra CDs later. So I figured out how to do it through USB, not sure if I should just yet though.
And sorry, didn't notice that long error the last time I thought it meant it was already installed.
But I did do a full system update at least though.

fromg googling it might have something to do with messed up fonts. I can get firefox to work as root though! 0_o.

Just an idea: Have you tried to use Firefox from Mozilla. I mean, download it and give it a try?
I have always done that, from my days in Slack, till this day and have to say that I NEVER have had a problem with Firefox, Java or plugins.
It may be a very biased opinion (since I have never had problems) but I think it may be worth to try.

  • Java won't work on Firefox, while it works on Safari on a Mac.

I have a MacBook Pro and downloaded Firefox 3.6 for it. Now I've realized that Java plugins won't work in Firefox for some reason, while they do work in Safari that came with the Mac. The problem wouldn't be with Java, since it works on Safari.
The Java-related plug-ins I have installed in Firefox are the Java Embedding Plug-in 0.9.7.3 and Java Plug-in 2 for NPAPI browsers.
When I go to a page that contains a Java applet, there is no error, the page says it's done loading, and there's a blank spot where an applet is supposed to be.

Actually, I have both plugins installed in Mac OS X 10.6, verified by entering '''about:plugins''' in the SeaMonkey 2 Location Bar (address bar)
    Java Embedding Plugin 0.9.7.3
    <br>File name: MRJPlugin.plugin
Java Plug-In 2 for NPAPI Browsers
    <br>File name: JavaPlugin2_NPAPI.plugin
This is a new iMac computer I just set up last week running OS X 10.6.4 with all current Apple Software Updates. I have SeaMonkey 2 installed on it, but not Firefox.
I have Java 6 Update 20 ( 1.6.0_20 ) installed, verified by going to the test link in the KB article I posted above,
    http://javatester.org/version.html
Java 1.6.0_20 (referred to as "Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 2" on the page cor-el linked) should be available from Apple's [http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1338 Software Update] feature.
Another test link you can try (from about:plugins):
    http://browserspy.dk/java.php
I think that the Java Embedding plugin is something that Mozilla includes with all its current browsers (Firefox, SeaMonkey, Camino) based on: http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/OSX.html#Java
    ...which links to http://javaplugin.sourceforge.net/

  • Java doesn't work in proxy environment

I assume it's because of the "separate process" approach to running Java taken by Safari 5.1, but when my system is set to use a proxy, Java ceases to function in Java 5.1. If I then return to a non-proxy environment, Java works again. In the proxy environment I tried reinstalling Java and quitting and relaunching Safari, but no luck. Under the same conditions the same Java applets worked in Firefox 5.01 so I know Java was fine with the proxy itself, it's just that Safari 5.1 is somehow interfering with that or failing to set a parameter in the Java environment I would guess.
Tried to find a way to lodge a bug report but this is the best I could do.
    Anyone else?
    Cheers,
    Matthew.

Sorry - I meant "in Safari 5.1" and I now see there have been other reports.

  • Java won't work on safari

I believe it is java thats not working. I use a website called mathzone.com and when i go on there to do my work safari wont pull up the interface for me to see the questions or to put in the ansers. If I use another browser like firefox it works fine... I just prefer safari. does anyone know how to help me.

Then click:  Check your browser for plugins
The site requires Shockwave, Flash, QuickTime, and Real Player.
And make sure Java is enabled in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Much better off using Firefox for this particular site. Safari has incompatibility issues with RealPlayer.

  • Flash Builder plugin for Eclipse (Java) won't work

I have installed Flash Builder Premium and then ran Plugin Utility to plug it into an existing Eclipse install. Now when I start my existing Eclipse, I see this error in logs - "org.eclipse.equinox.p2.core.ProvisionException: No repository found at file:/C:/Program%20Files%20(x86)/Adobe/Adobe%20Flash%20Builder%204.6/.". I have Flash Builder Premium 4.6 installed at "C:\Program Files (x86)/Adobe/Adobe Flash Builder 4.6".

Just to add to it (if it helps) - I'm able to run Flash Builder in standalone mode with Eclipse version that comes with it. However, the plugin into my existing Eclipse(3.7.2) won't work. Any idea what could be the problem?

  • Java Won't Work As Domain User

    Hi guys and gals,

Local users work and I have even tried giving a standard domain user both local and domain admin rights as a test to see if that would work but sadly not.
Please has anyone seen this before as I am completely stumped now, I have been through all group policies on the server and can't find anything that would interfere with java in such a way
I have even tried removing the deploy policy for java, uninstalling it, running ccleaner reg fixes and then installing it straight from the website with no luck
Thanks in advance for any help offered,
    Adrian

  • JNI Calls to Native Methods No Longer Work: Possible Versioning Issue ?

Hello, all. Just a quick question... is it possible that invoking a method in a JNI-compliant DLL from Java 6 will fail if the DLL's source was compiled against the JNI header files from Java 4 or 5 ? I have a DLL with methods that used to be called successfully (and now fail outright and don't even seem to be getting inside the native method), but it seems that the only thing that could have changed in the environment is the installed JRE. Even stranger, I don't get the hs_err* files anymore to indicate that the JVM crashed. Does anyone know why this might happen ? Thanks !

You could of course be doing something in the JNI code in terms of working with Java which no longer works. Just as it is at least possible that java code from one version might not work with another.
Correct error checking in the JNI code would at least correctly identify this problem however.

You seem unsure whether the JNI is being called at all, so verifying that first would be a good idea.

  • Java won't work correctly

I play a game called Runescape frequently, and until recently, I have had no problems running it.
A few weeks ago, I upgraded from Firefox 3.6 to Firefox 4 to find out that the game isn't supported for Firefox 4. After uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling the 3.6 Version again, I only get a black screen when trying to load the game.
After Firefox stopped working for me, I grabbed Safari which seemed to play just fine.
I recently downloaded the Updates for Leopard which included the Java update. Since downloading this Java update, Safari crashes every time I try to run the game.
If anyone has any suggestions as to how I can fix my problem, it'd be much appreciated.
The game is located at www.Runescape.com if you're willing to figure out the problem this way.

    I tried most of these.
I started with making a new user because that seemed the easiest. Also, wouldn't a new user clear all preferences and cache files instantly?
I actually feel VERY certain that it's a Java issue.

Is what pops up when I try to run the game. Once the java starts, crash. To start Safari again I have to open and quit it before anything works.

  • Webcam and usb drive not working--possible hardware issue?

    Hello,
I recently purchased a Lenovo ideapad U510 with Windows 8. I bought it as a returned machine but the Staples employee didn't know why it had been returned and thought it was just because the buyer didn't like Windows 8. When I first set it up I kept getting an error message that my usb device was not recognized, even though I had never plugged anything in. As I was leaving the country, I dismissed the issue and decided to deal w/ it when I returned to the US, since my other usb drives worked fine.
However, later my integrated webcam stopped working as well. It worked one time when I used Skype but not after that. I checked online forums for possible solutions, and most said I needed to download an updated driver. I didn't think this was the issue b/c when I went to device manager and tried to update my driver for the easycam, it said I already had the most up-to-date driver. I have uninstalled drivers, downloaded and re-installed drivers, and even refreshed my computer, all to no avail.
Here are the error messages I receive:
In device manager>view>show hidden devices>imaging devices>Lenovo EasyCamera, device status says
Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)
To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer.
When I try to run the Bison setup: Lenovo EasyCam has not found!
When I try to run the Chicony setup: Setup failed! Please Plugin camera and install driver again!
So, I'm thinking it's not a driver issue, but I'm not a techie and don't know what else it could be. Wondering if the usb problem and webcam problem are connected. Found another forum post that said maybe the webcam is not connected to the motherboard...suggestions?
Thank you in advance for your help.

I am certain it is a hardware issue from the problems youre describing. I would contact Lenovo. They may try to have you purchase their "software" support, but don't let them. I had wifi issues and they tried to make me spend $90 because I was too lazy to figure it out on my own.
Make sure when you're calling support that you tell them that you restored to factory default and before you send your computer in, back up your data. Also tell them that it's a new computer and you do not want to pay for shipping... They will most likely comp you shipping in both directions.
