Javascript to java - applet.requestfocus hangs browser

Following is my javascript which invokes the method jsSetFocus() on the applet to set focus on a button in applet.
<script>
function appletSetFocus() {
document.applet.jsSetFocus();
document.applet.requestFocus(); //this line has problem
window.onfocus = appletSetFocus;
</script>
Everything works perfectly on the first invocation of the applet. When i hit the refresh button to reload the applet the browser hangs. If i go to some other page and then come back to the applet the second time in this case also it is working properly.
The problem occurs on the refresh button and only on the requestfocus line. If this line is commented, then
everything is great again....
I am using 1.3.1, IE 5.5 sp1, NT4 sp6.
Can anyone help?
Vineet.

Forgot to mention... the problem comes only when i hit refresh and go to some other window and try to come back to the window with the applet... that when the javascript function is invoked.

  • COMMUNICATION BETWEEN JAVASCRIPT AND JAVA APPLET: US$20 AWARD FOR SOLUTION!

    COMMUNICATION BETWEEN JAVASCRIPT AND JAVA APPLET PROBLEM (Easy Filter Java Applet) -
    US$20 TO ANYONE WHO CAN RESOLVE THE PROBLEM
    To forum visitors:
    I am prepared to pay a standard shareware fee of US$20 to a user who can resolve this technical problem.
    If your advice resolves the problem, I'll forward the payment to your postal address (include your
    address with your reply, and also your email address)
    I am attempting to enable a HTML button (using Javascript's onClick command) to directly input a number into one of the parameter text boxes in the Easy Filter Java applet (ie, enter a new color value number in the text field of the standard Colors Multiplicator Filter interface).
    The applet is Freeware and can be downloaded at: http://www.javazoom.net/applets/easyfilter10/EasyFilter10.html
    (It is a very effective bitmap display and editing utility)
    To achieve this, I am trying to access the part of the applet that defines and sets the textbox. The text box is defined in the .class file by accessing the parameter details in the genericfilter.txt file (accompanies the .class files). I need to access 'private String appletInitialize()' and then one of the 'textFieldParameters' which sets the textbox.
    I understand the basic syntax for referencing the applet:
    document.appletname.setString("An example"). However, accessing the text fields in this applet is more complex!!
    Please can you recommend the correct Javascript syntax to achieve communication with the applet.
    Thank you for your kind assistance.

  • Java applet freeze completly browser

    Hi there
    Ive created a smalle board game in an ASP / Javascript page. The game is multiplayer and i connect everybody via an java applet to a java server.
    Well, it look like this :
    ASP / Javascript --> Applet --> JavaServer --> Applet --> ASP / javascript
    The game is just fine and completly functionnal. The problem is : We just brought in some video for the players who have Webcams. And those video freeze when the applet is waiting a response from the server. Is there anyway that the applet does not freeze the whole browser so that the video continu playing even if the game is waiting?
    the main window contain 2 sections, video & chat and the game. The game containt a few frames with one of them containing the applet. In the java applet, im using BufferedReader and PrintWriter with AppletSocket to communicate with the server.
    Im not sure if i have made myself clear, if not, tell me, ill try to make it clearer.
    Thanks in advance
    Marc
    P.S. sorry for my english

    There maybe some code will help most of you to understand better my problem.
    Here's the function in my asp pages that wait for the applet response.
    function AttendreReponse()
         AppletConnect.Recevoir();
         GererRecevoir();
    }The javascript function 'GererRecevoir()' get the code that was sent by the server, analyse it and then, do run the proper function so the game can go on normally..
    And here's the java function 'Recevoir()' in the applet
    public void Recevoir()
      // String received from the server
      String fromServer = "";
      this.paramTransaction = "";
      this.codeTransaction ="";
      try{
        // Reads the string received
        fromServer = this.in.readLine();
        if(fromServer != null)
          this.codeTransaction = fromServer.substring(0,2);
          if(fromServer.length() > 2){
            this.paramTransaction = fromServer.substring(2); //retrieve the 2 next ^^
      // Applet dosent receive anything anymore from the server
      catch (IOException e){
        System.out.println("Le serveur n'est plus en fonction");
        System.exit(1);
    }So the main problem is that the applet freeze the whole window then ge gets to : fromServer = this.in.readLine();
    He wait until he get a response or untill he timeout.
    What I would like, is that the applet does not freeze the whole window while waiting since videoconference, chatting and sound arent very usefull if you can use them 3/4 of the time.
    I hope this helped you to understand a little bit more.
    Thanks again
    Marc

  • Remote Java applet ftp hangs

    Hi,
    I have a java applet that ftps files back to a server. It is correctly signed and can access files on the hard drive.
    When downloaded and run as a local applet it works fine, however when downloaded as a remote applet it just hangs at the line
    FTPClient ftp = new FTPClient();
    No error messages, no clue, just gets no further than that.
    Apologies if this is a bit vague or missing any vital information, but java isn't really my thing....
    Cheers
    Ralph

    Thanks, I'm running 1.6.0_12.
    No, FF has the option but nothing happens when I click on it. I just upgraded today from v3.5.x because under that version the option is there but when clicked on it deactivates the option. I first tried upgrading to the latest console plugin for FF. As soon as I installed it and FF restarted it said that it was desupported and next time it re-started it just does nothing as I said. So I upgraded to v3.6.13 and re-started and same same. It says it's de-supported. I dunno.
    Anyway, I went to the System tray Java icon and right-clicked on it and clicked on properties. Under 'Advanced | Java Console' I see I had it as "hide Console". I changed it to "Show Console". When I started an Applet I got the console. I closed it and now I don't get it again. Weird.
    I just cancelled the Java icon in the system tray and restarted it. I checked it back to Hide the Java Console and "Apply", then Show it, and "Apply". Then I started an Applet. No dice. I started it again and Got the Console. But is seems if I close it I can't get it back without all this riggamorole.

  • Javascript to Java (Applet) method call fails in JRE1.4.1 & NN4.79

    Win2k, Netscape 4.79, JRE 1.4.1. I'm trying to call an applet method from Javascript from the page which contains the applet. 'm using MAYSCRIPT tag. I'm getting the error "myApplet doesn'nt have any properties". (myApplet is the name of the applet). When I use the default JRE which is supported by NN4.79(Symantic JRE 1.1.5) it works well. Does JRE1.4.1 plugin doesn't support Javascript to Java calls? OR I'm doing something wrong.
    Deepak

    I'm seeing the same issue. This is supposed to work. I converted the <APPLET> tags in the HTML to use <OBJECT> and <EMBED> tags using Sun's converter (see http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/docs/guide/plugin/developer_guide/using_tags.html). I try to reference the applet (using the document.embeds[0] object instead of the document.applets[0] object) and it seems the applet has not been loaded. I can't reference any of the methods in the applet. It appears the applet has not loaded. I do not see any evidence of the applet's init() method being called.
    Have you had any luck getting this to work?

  • Java applets in a browser, and Serial port input

    I know that there is a special package for serial port input in java. (java.Comm.SerialPort)
    What I am trying to figure out before a final decision on design is made, is if there is anyway of reading serial port input into a java applet that is running inside of a browser.
    I have found lots of reference to Serial port input, but nothing that really goes in the direction that I am lookind for.
    Any little tid bits of information pertaining to this would be greatly appreciated.
    Cuervo

    You should also consider that applets are not allowed to access their client system's hardware without being signed; in other words, the user must agree (by clicking a button) to disable the applet security features. Why would you use an applet to do this? Applets are meant to be an extension of a website. You should use an application in this situation.

  • Trouble loading java-applet from within browser

    hello,
              I'm kinda new to Java-applets and to Weblogic and consequently I've run
              into a problem. I'm having difficulties deploying an applet in a
              war-archive. My archive structure looks like this:
              --root of .war
              --index.jsp
              --WEB-INF
              --classes
              --test
              --testapplet.class
              my code to load the applet in my index.jsp file looks like this:
              <applet
              codebase = "http://localhost:7001/WebModule/WEB-INF/classes"
              code = "test.testapplet.class"
              name = "TestApplet"
              width = "400"
              height = "300"
              hspace = "0"
              vspace = "0"
              align = "middle"
              >
              </applet>
              Unfortunately the class is not found by the browser producing a
              ClassNotFoundException. I use Weblogic 8.1SP2 and Mozilla 1.6, both
              using J2SDK(JRE) 1.4.2-03. My IDE is Borland JBuilder X Weblogic edition
              and my host-OS is Gentoo-Linux.
              Can anyone point out what's my mistake?
              Thx in advance
              Nic

    Ok, thanks. I didn't know that.

  • How can i convert java application of bibeans to java applet?

    Hi Bibeans PMTeam,
    Bibeans provide two type client:java application and web client(JSP/Servlet),because web client's function is weaker than java app,so we want to convert java app to java applet,thus,we can embed java applet into web browser(our system framework is in web browser).
    That is,we want one applet client that commution with a server side service(can by socket,just like oracle 9i form service)that provide the data that applet need,or the applet connect to olap server and bibeans catalog server by socket(this need security authentication if olap server,bibeans catalog,web server is not in one machine).
    so we need you provide whole resolve scheme,thanks a lot,if this answer is not clarity,please connect:[email protected],thanks a lot!

    hi tomsong
    well, in my experience 20mb are quite large for an applet. also take into account that you need a certain jvm that supports this type of application (my guess is that internet explorers native vm isnt an option)
    i personally would tend to deliver the functionality via java webstart (look at the sunsite):so you can centrally manage the software, download it once and opertae an application on your client (i mean an APPLICATION and not an applet)
    regarding 2: well but there is NO bibean service in ias: so you have to open the former mentioned jdbc connection to the olap service from your client
    for the availability: you have to check with the pm team
    in the meantime: what about the following approach: give power users a java application and lightweight or random users a handy html client ?
    regards,
    thomas

  • Java Applet Communication

    I have discovered that a Java Applet in a browser (Win or Mac) can talk to a Servlet on a server to access a database.
    Is there anyway that a Java Applet in a browser (Win or Mac) can talk to a Java application running on the client system so that it can access local databases?
    I was thinking something like writing cookies and then using the java application to read the contents and act accordingly. This would obviously be slow as far as feedback is concerned, is there a quicker or better way?
    Thanks
    James.

    I had the same problem and i had to implement a server running on my local machine.
    The servlet on the server allow me to access the local database.
    As for trying to change the policy tool.....it's a nightmare.
    I would recommend you to use a applet-servlet communication..

    Well, you can get a free tutorial to Java at http://www.mindview.net/. It's the "Thinking In Java" book. You can download the whole book from that site, it's about a thousand pages. If you read that whole book, you'll know exactly where to start and probably how to finish it too.
    As a gimmie, think about it -- you'll have to remove all of the browser-detect code, since browser-detection is only done to determine which version of JavaScript is supported by the browser.

A method on JavaScript repeatedly retrieves data form the server , let's say; every 100 ms and it calls the method on Java to draw a graph(I use thread to call repaint()). The problem is, if I leave the applet site(or the site has lost the focus), the stop() will be called and I can't recieve data from JavaScript anymore. If I go back to the site, the applet starts, but the graph doesn't show the figure, as it supposes to show.
    how can I tell the browser doesn't call the stop() or there is another way to solve this problem?
    Thanks for all answers. CU.

    my own fault.. it's not the browser or the applet.. It's my computer.. it's too old for this applet..
    Does anyone know, how to optimize the applet with thread? thanks..

  • Passing information from applet  to  java script  of same browser

    Hi
    i want to pass some information from applet button click to same browser window html elements where applet exist. how it can be possible

    Use JSObject:

                  height="0" width="0" >
            <param name="code" value="someApplet.class" />
            <!--[if !IE]> Mozilla/Netscape and its brethren -->
            <object classid="java:someApplet.class"

    // new class for jsObject!!!! compile this: javac -classpath "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0\lib\plugin.jar" someApplet.java
    // since jaws.jar does not exsist anymore
    // in 1.4.0 to compile: javac -classpath "C:\j2sdk1.4.0_03\jre\lib\jaws.jar" someApplet.java
    // for msjvm use the -source 1.3 -target 1.1 option so the command looks like this:
    // javac -source 1.3 -target 1.1 -classpath "C:\j2sdk1.4.0_03\jre\lib\jaws.jar" someApplet.java
    import netscape.javascript.*;
    public class someApplet extends java.applet.Applet {
        JSObject win;
        public void init() {
             try{
                 win = JSObject.getWindow(this);
    // you need win.eval("window.close();"); // to close the window. if the current window is not a popup
    // opened by a parent with window.open than the user will get a waring, your next question probably will
    // be "can I stop this warning" and the answer is simple: NO
                 JSObject textBoxLabel = (JSObject) win.eval("document.getElementById('lblOutputText')");
                 textBoxLabel.setMember("innerHTML", "<center><h1>Some text from applet</h1></center>");
            }catch(Exception e){
                 e.printStackTrace();

  • I am trying to use an education program that needs Java applets to install and use and it will not use Safari. When I download IE from the web it will not install. How can I get a browser that will work on my MacAir for travel use of this program?

    I am trying to use and education program that needs Java applets and it will not run on Safari. IE will not install from the web. How do I get a browser that will work to install so I can use this program when I travel.

    Try using FireFox. IE will only run on a Mac if you run Windows on the Mac.
    Windows on Intel Macs
    There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
    Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows 7 or Windows 8.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
    Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
    VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
    Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. A more recent comparison of Parallels, VM Fusion, and Virtual Box is found at Virtualization Benchmarks- Parallels 10 vs. Fusion 7 vs. VirtualBox. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard and later. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
    You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • Java Applets not running in Any browser

    Hi,
    I have JRE / JSE (1.6.17) installed on a windows 7, 32 bit Intel Machine.
    I am able to do all the programming and stuff (in Java), but when i try to open a web page with a Java Applet, it just does not show.
    The page gives a message saying that an additional plugin is required.
    I tried, Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer...all have the same problem.
    The environment variables are correctly set.
    This is something completely new for me, so would appreciate some help

    Actually i think its more related to JRE.
    I was actually referring to general applet loading.
    I cannot open any applet in any browser.
