JDBC and Struts - how?

Hi, I am writing my first struts application. However despite all the great tutorials out there, I can't find any real examples on how to connect to a database using the <data-source> tags in the struts-config.xml file.
I know you provide details of the db as follows:
<data-sources>
<data-source
autoCommit="false"
description="MySql Database Configuration"
driverClass="org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver"
maxCount="4"
minCount="2"
password="myPass"
url="jdbc:mysql://localhost:1526/myDB"
user="myUser"
/>
</data-source>
but then what?! Even if I can get this to work (which I can't!), how do I use the connection? What do I do with it then?
Many, many, thanks for any guidance.

The properties file is just used to store the data-source info as you have outlined.
<data-sources>
<data-source key="name" ... />
</data-sources>
Once you have defined all the parameters identifying your data source you need to retrieve it in the Action class or in the relevant model class - the later only works with Tomcat 4 and later, so check your web server, the first will (should?) work on all web servers.
//fetch the datasource
DataSource ds = servlet.findDataSource("name");
Once you have the DS you can create the connection where needed, if in the action class simple generate a connection object form the data source and do the JDBC required. Or as is preferable pass the data source to a model class and do it all there.
//pass DS to model
modelClass searchBean = new modelClass(ds);
Hopes this helps.

  • Jdbc and struts

    Hi,
    pls tell me where i can find simple examples for connecting oracle database using struts
    regards,
    dhanya

    Hi Dhanya,
    what container/server are you using? If you are using a Java web server or a Java EE application server, then you should not have to do any Oracle specific thing in your code. Create a datasource and use JNDI to look up the datasource(jdbc.sql.DataSource). Then call datasource.getConnection().
    When you deploy, configure the datsource to connect to Oracle, for that matter any JDBC compliant database.

  • Best practice for dealing with Recordsets, JDBC and JSP?

    I've spent the last three years developing web apps using JSP, Struts and Kodo JDO for persistence. All of the content for the apps was created as Java objects using model classes and saved to an Oracle db. Thus, data retrieved from the db was as instances of the model classes and then put into Struts form beans, etc.
    I changed jobs last month and am now having to use Servlets with JDBC to retrieve records from db tables and returning it into Recordsets. Oh, and I can't use Struts in my JSPs either. I'm beginning to think that I had it easy at my previous job but maybe that's just because I was used to it.
    So here are my problems/questions:
    I have two tables with a one to many relationship that I need to retrieve data from, show in a jsp and be able to update eventually.
    So here's what I am doing:
    a) In a servlet, I use a SQL statement to join the tables and retrieve the results into a Recordset.
    b) I created a class with a bunch of String attributes to copy the Recordset data into, one Recordset row per each instance of the bean and then close the Recordset
    c) I then add the beans to an ArrayList and save the ArrayList into the session.
    d) Then, in the JSP, I retrieve the ArrayList from the session and iterate over each bean instance, printing the data out to the jsp. There are some logic statements to determine when not to print redundant data caused by the one to many join.
    e) I have not written the code to update the data yet but was planning on having separate jsps for updating the (one) table and the (many) table.
    Would most of you do something similar? Would you use one SQL statement to retrieve all of the data for display and use logic to avoid printing the redundant part of the data? Or would you have used separate SQL queries, one for each table? Would you have saved the results into something other than an instance of a bean class that represents one record in the RecordSet? Would you have had a bean class with attributes other than Strings - like had a collection attribute to hold the results from the "many" table? The way that I am doing everything just seems so cumbersome and difficult compared to using Struts and JDO before.
    Your help/opinion will be greatly appreciated!

    Would you use one SQL statement to retrieve all of the data for display Yes.
    and use logic to avoid printing the redundant part of the dataNo.
    I believe in minimising the number of queries. If it is a simple one-many join on a db table, then one query is better than one + n queries.
    However I prefer to store the objects in a bean class with attributes other than strings - ie one object, with a collection attribute to hold the related "many" records.
    Does the fact you are not using Struts mean that you have to use scriptlet code? (shudder)
    Or are you using JSTL, or other custom tags?
    How about tools like Ant? Junit testing?
    The way that I am doing everything just seems so cumbersome and difficult
    compared to using Struts and JDO before.Anything different takes adjusting to. Sounds like you know what you're doing for the most part. I agree, in terms of best practices what you have described so far sounds like a step backwards from what you were previously doing.
    However I wouldn't go complaining about it too loudly, too quickly. If you're new on the block theres nothing like making a pain of yourself, and complaining how backwards the work they have done is to put your new workmates' backs up
    Look on it as a challenge. Maybe discuss it quietly with a team leader, to see if they understand how much easier/better/less error prone such approaches can be?
    Struts, cumbersome as it can be, definitely has the advantage of pushing you to follow good MVC practice.
    Good luck,

  • JDBC and FTP sender channels stop polling

    Hi,
    We have a great volume of sender JDBC and FTP sender channels.
    For this reason there is nothing unusual to have temporary error connections.
    Several months ago, with an XI 3.0 system, sender channels recover its functionality  automatically when temporary error connection is solved.
    But now, he have migrate to a  PI 7.1 sytem, and in the same scenario and configuration,  sender channel stop polling after a temporary error . In cc monitor this channels remains in  green status and there were no signs of stopped interfaces.
    Timeouts are correctly defined and there is no difference between channel configuration in our Xi and PI system.
    How to solve this problem?
    Thanks, in advance.
    Carme.

    Thanks for your fast response, Stefan.
    After writing this post, i ask the same question to our basis team and  we are in the latest sp.
    ¿do you know if there is any note or can you provide me some additional information?
    I'm not able to find any note about this issue...

  • JDBC and Linguistic Sorting

    The problem: oracle jdbc thin driver doesn't see environment variable NLS_SORT
    Description:
    We have a lot of code written in coldfusion and now we would like to switch form CF5 to CFMX. We use oracle thin driver to connect CFMX to oracle DB.
    The problem is that "order by" doesn't work as earlier. It seems that it jdbc driver couldn't make linguistic sorting, only binary. I tried with different versions, classes12.jar and ojdbc14.jar (the newest from otn).
    I know that i could solve problem if use sql function nlssort but it is not acceptable for us. We couldn't change all our source code. We would like to use env variable NLS_SORT to control this behaviour.
    I also wrote small standalone java program to test this directly but it doesn't see NLS_SORT. sqlplus from same shell works well.
    Is it possible to set oracle jdbc thin driver to use NLS env settings (NLS_SORT)?
    If yes, how? If not, what is the way to do linguistic sorting using jdbc?
    Thank you,

    Zeljko,
    I don't have an answer for you (sorry), but I can suggest some resources where you may find the answer (hopefully -- assuming you haven't already tried them).
    The section entitled JDBC and Globalization Support in chapter 18 ("Advanced Topics") of the "Oracle9i JDBC Developer's Guide and Reference, Release 2 (9.2)".
    [Note: Since I couldn't see any details in your post about which Oracle version you are using, I assumed it was 9.2. However, you can access Oracle documentation for all the latest versions from the [url=http://tahiti.oracle.com]Tahiti Web site.]

  • Which tutorials may you suggest for JDBC and servlets?

    Hello, i would to learn about JDBC and servlets.
    May you please suggest me a good tutorial(e.g.post me a link) in order to study for JDBC and servlets?
    e.g. How to make a servlet etc.
    Thanks, in advance!

    I agree with PhHein, it's best to learn one technology and then the other. (Just my two cents, but start with JDBC from a simple standalone application, then when that is working, try to tackle Servlets, since you will need to also learn how to get them working in a container like Tomcat).
    Here is a tutorial that has both concepts in it at the same time. Site is down now, but is usually up. http://www.roseindia.net/jdbc/jdbcconnectivity.shtml
    Also, you will eventually want to download a J2EE container such as Tomcat or Jboss.

    May be I'm too foolish to follow those links, I got issues of each links.
    What I really want is an example from step0

    Refer the Lookup document - Easy Lookup in Process Integration 7.1
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/index?rid=/library/uuid/20befc9a-aa72-2b10-ae9b-b0988791d457
    The first step is "Create an RFC Enabled Function Module for look up", but where can I create the function module? Should I use ESB, IB? or use transaction 'SE11' ?
    Kulkarni:
    Very good links for RFC lookup with 7.0/3.0

    At page6 "PI Development/Configuration", it saies "You are on the design maintenance screen in the Integration Builder.Expand the subnodes for the software component version for which you want to import interfaces".
    What is "design maintenance screen" ? My IB version is: Service Pack:08 Release:NW07_08_REL.
    When I open IB, it display a screen titled with "Configuration: Intergation Builder", I did not find "software component version" node on the left tree.

    The Prerequisites state:
    The JDBC channel to be used for the lookup must be configured and activated in the Integration Directory.
    The definition of the table used for the lookup must already be imported into the ES Repository as an external definition
    But I don't know how to create a JDBC channel and define the table.

    I've seen similar things happen when the module name is either not specified
    correctly
    in the StrutsContent element in the portlet, or when the module is misconfigured,
    usually because of either a mising config file or a mis-named config
    file.
    Ensure that you have a the struts config file for the exercise-taglib

    WEB-INF, named jpf-struts-config-struts-exercise-taglib.xml.

  • Problem with Pop up windows and struts

    Hi
    I have problem in working with pop-up windows and struts.
    I have parent page which basically lists some data and has a button for adding new record. when I press that button a child windndow will be opened for data entry. The child window has submit button to save data.
    when I press the button for save, It will go to action class and saves it in a database and forwards a new page.
    but I do not want to forward any new page. If any exception is raised during database saving, a message should be showed in child window otherwise the child window should close and the parent window should get refreshed.
    Can any one write me how we can handle this in struts.
    Thanks in Advance,
    SR

    This has nothing to do with struts, you can do the same with some plain JavaScript. Do the following...
    1) On error, forward to a error page
    2) On success, forward to a temp.html page.
    The code in temp.html would be like this
    <html>
    <head><script>
    window.opener.reload();
    self.close();
    </script></head>
    <body>Closing...</body>
    </html>Cheers

  • Framesets and Struts

    I'm trying to design a help page for my web application. I considered using framesets and frames to design the page. When I try to open the frameset (help.htm) in my application, it doesn't load the frames. I'm assuming this is because the <frame src="..."> required a relative path. Correct?
    How can I work around this? I even tried this <html:frame page="..."> but to no avail.
    Any other suggestions most welcome too.
    Thanks.

    I would suggest you to try Tiles and struts. You can define the tiles (to have the same look as your current frames) and the struts pages/jsp's could go into any of the defined tiles.
    Frames would have issues in different browsers and I am positive most of them will be cleared with tiles. For more info and usage check out

    I believe Struts and Xforms follow different paths. Its hard to integrate or redundant to use both together. Althought Struts is a very good solution with existing technologies, XFORMS sounds to be a more standard one.
    Advantage conflict of Struts and XFORMS
    Struts :
    1. View - JSP
    2. Model - Form Bean
    XFORMS processor on server side:
    1. View & Model all handled by XFORMS processor, XML & XSL (Great :) !)
    In case of XFORMS processor u can do renderer independent authoring quite easily, and XML is a preferrable way to have data now a days.

  • Jdbc and paging

    Hi,
    i have the following doubts regarding the jdbc and paging please clarify me...
    1)Is it advisable to use stored procedure to implement paging is records
    are more in database
    2)If the records are more in the database and we execute
    select * from table where id >10 and id<15 then will
    the query execution will be slow because the database is large(and so stored procedure will be faster)
    or as we are selecting only records between 10 and 15 so the
    query execution is not slow
    3)will the recordset help in solving the probem
    4)is there a way to select the count of the records along with the records for display in the page
    the count of the records is required to display the next button
    if two queries are to be written one to display the next button and second to get the records to
    display on the page then the system may be slow when many users are accessing and using stored
    procedures may be better
    5)when we write the select query with 'for update' clause then the row will be locked
    or the table is locked .
    6)when we write the select query with 'for update' clause then until we execute the update
    query the lock will be there and the lock will be released on executing the update query
    is that right then what about the case if after the select query we get some exception
    and code does not reach the update query then what about the lock will be lock remain
    and give problem
    regards
    Javid

    1) that would really depend on you goals. for performance only, stored procedures are precompiled so should be faster.
    2) definitely you should only select what you want and limiting the number of rows you return will speed up your query.
    3) what do you mean by that? a recordset represents the collection of rows returned from the query so should help you.
    4) it depends on your database. for instance, MySQL has a function to return the number of rows returned. however, some database has an unbuffered mode so that the first few rows will be returned very quickly without knowing how many rows are there, in which case, you won't know the number of rows until all the rows have been retrieved.
    5 and 6 are database-dependent, while most rdbms only lock the selected rows by default, some lock the entire table.
