JDBC Mysql Resultset too large!

Hello everybody,
I'm currently building a large database retrieval system(JAVA and mysql). Everything works fine, but I have a big problem. The returning resultset is way higher then it should be!!
The table has the following structure:
Probe_set_id unsigned mediumint(6)
Expressionvalue float(5,1)
Dataset unsigned tinyint(2)
I'm trying to retrieve a dataset with 6.5 million rows with the following query.
Select Probe_Set_ID, Expressionvalue from Test5 where dataset=1
This results in JAVA taking around 500 megabyte retrieving the Resultset!!! If my calculations are right it should take around the following:
Float 4 bytes * 6500000 = 26000000 bytes
unsigned mediumint = long 8 bytes * 6500000 = 52000000 bytes
That would be 78000000 bytes, which is around 75 megabyte and not 500 megabyte!!!!!
Code sample:
               String dataBaseName = "testDB";
               String dataBaseUser = "java";
               String dataBasePass = "clustering";
               String url = "jdbc:mysql://localhost/" + dataBaseName;
               Class.forName ("org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver").newInstance ();
               Connection conn = DriverManager.getConnection (url, dataBaseUser, dataBasePass);
               conn.setReadOnly(true);
               Statement s = conn.createStatement();
               s.execute("Select Probe_Set_ID, Expressionvalue from Test5 where dataset=1");
               ResultSet rs = s.getResultSet();
This results in a giant resultset and I can't see the answer. I hope someone can help me. I'm using the newest JDBC driver of mysql!

Yes the JAVA application really takes up this amount! It is really akward. The DB doesn't take a real big amount of memory because of the buffer sizes I've set. I execute the java application as follow:
./java -server -XX:MaxHeapFreeRatio=5 -XX:MinHeapFreeRatio=20 -Xmx1512M dbTest
I'm really trying to keep the heap small because the JAVA application ( a gene expression processing application/server) takes big amounts of memmory when downloading data from the mysql database and the server is accesible by multiple users parallel. Though I'm still testing alone, so the memmory abuse is not a cause by other users.

  • JDBC: Complete IDOC too large for Oracle DB

    Dear all,
    I received IDOCs from SAP system that should be stored into a Oracel DB.
    The IDOC should be saved as complete XML structure in a single DB field.
    I have two problems:
    1) The IDOC contain all fields. If a field is empty, it will be transmit like <ERSDA>/</ERSDA>
         This makes the IDOC very large. This is because of a filtering process in bd53 that
         have  to be keeped.
    2) We should save the complete IDOC in on DB field. So I took an xsl mapping to copy the
        complete source into on target field. The DB could only store 4000 characters in one field, but
        our IDOC got more characters.
    So I have to downsize the source IDOC (favorite) or have to split the target. But this would make it
    very complexe I think.
    Can someone give me a hint for filtering the not necessarily fields in PI??
    As an alternative we could store every single segment of the IDOC in a single row of the DB.
    That would be easy if we would read the IDOC data directly from SAP table, but as IDOC XML it
    is almost not technically feasible, is it?
    Any hints?
    Thanks
    Chris

    Thanks for replies.
    @all:
    Is there an option to get an IDOC like it is saved in SAP system in
    table EDID4?? There is an IDOC split in segments.
    @Baskar
    The target field is already CLOB data type. But the admin told me, that the maximum
    numbers of characters is reached by 4000 chars.
    @Raja
    >Well, if you trigger IDoc from ECC,when IDoc reaches PI,it will not have empty Tags,if it
    >is coming then you have to work on that why it is behaving like that.
    It got this / for fields that should not be change. But our target system does not need this infos. But
    the SAP system will not change this.
    >After IDoc reaches PI, convert Entire IDoc in to one string,if you are on PI 7.1 then
    >it is very easy,use option Retun As XML,it will convert IDoc in to one XML String.
    Where do I use this option? In IDOC sender channel I could not find it.
    >IDoc(segment)-->anystring function-->DB Field(Target).
    What does this mean? Will you filter the segements of an IDOC?
    If I could split a complete IDOC into single segments it would help.
    Can you please tell in detail what you mean?
    Thanks
    Chris

  • ResultSet too large with huge query

    Is there a way to 'flush' a java result set? I am retrieving approx. one million rows using a fetch size of 10. At about row #130,000 I receive an out of memory error. Is there a way to tell the result set to discard from memory all rows it has already retrieved?
    Any ideas? The solution must be scalable, and breaking the queries up into smaller queries is not an option. In addition, simply increasing the jvm memory is not a permanent solution.
    Thanks in advance!

    >>
    where does it say the result set and complementing
    driver must load all the rows into memoryfor
    any type of scrolling? it may be true that in your
    experience there is less consumption of resouces bya
    forward only cursor but i would certainly hope, nay
    expect, that a JDBC driver by scalable regardlessof
    this option.
    i think a driver that "breaks" under certian load
    conditions has got a bug.
    This is the reverse of your previous point. Where
    does it say that a driver must load a million rows?i have re-read this several times now and i'm not sure what you are saying. i think my point is that in my opinion a well-designed driver would throw a SQLException if due to limitations in it's implementation it cannot perform the request rather than attempt to do everything and cause a run time error. i think if i can make a piece of code cause an error and not an exception than that is a bug.
    my original statement was that there is no spec in JDBC that states that a result set must implement a certain type of cursor in a given way other than what is part of the interface so i think it could be misleading to say that all drivers load all the rows of a result set if the cursor is scrollable. in fact i think if a cursor is TYPE_SCROLL_SENSITIVE it is highly likely that the result set would not be loading all the rows into memory as this caching defeats the purpose of a cursor senstive to changes made by others.
    also again while the original poster blames thedriver
    i am not convinced that indeed that is the point of
    failure in their code. i suspect there is some
    Collection in which they are attempting to storeall
    the rows that is causing the error.
    Could be their code - that is the source of most
    programming problems. But it could be a limitation of
    the driver or even the database.again this is what Exceptions are for no? i think such limitations and conditions are "reasonable" for an application to catch.

  • Serious problem of jdbc-mysql connectivity using tomcat

    hi everybody
    i m in serious problem since last 15-20 days. i m trying hard to make the connection jdbc-mysql using tomcat with the help of a jsp test page but every time i am facing almost the similar probems listed below in detail:
    to make sure that the jdrivers's .jar (mysql-connector-java-3.1.7-bin.jar) available for such connections working fine i have tried the above said connection without using tomcat....which is working fine...for this i have created a dummy database with a dummy table ..and written some queries in the .java file of my code which upon running inserts the specified values in the defined(dummy) database.
    this is the confirmation that the classpath etc..are ok in regard to the mysql-connector-java-3.1.7-bin.jar
    now i have placed a copy of this .jar file in to the commons/lib directory of the tomcat web server(which is suppossed to be the place for such external jars)
    after doing so i have followed 2 methods :
    method 1st:........
    i have made aone more jar file from the following .java file....
    import javax.naming.*;
    import javax.sql.*;
    import java.sql.*;
    public class TestSQLLoad
    String user = "Not Connected";
    String pwd = "no pwd";
    int id = -1;
    public void init() {
    try{
    Context ctx = new InitialContext();
    if(ctx == null ) {
    throw new Exception("Boom - No Context");
    DataSource ds = (DataSource)ctx.lookup("java:comp/env/jdbc/TestDB");
    if (ds != null) {
    Connection conn = ds.getConnection();
    if(conn != null) {
    user = "Got Connection "+conn.toString();
    Statement stmt = conn.createStatement();
    String q = "select name, password, id from user";
    ResultSet rst = stmt.executeQuery(q);
    if(rst.next()) {
    user=rst.getString(1);
    pwd=rst.getString(2);
    id = rst.getInt(3);
    conn.close();
    }catch(Exception e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    public String getUser() {
    return user;
    public String getPassword() {
    return pwd;
    public int getID()
    return id;
    after compiling it at the cmd prompt i made a .jar file from the .class of it and named it MySQLLoad.jar...then i placed it also in to the commons/lib directory where the mysql-connector-java-3.1.7-bin.jar was already placed.
    then i have changed the server.xml and web.xml files from the conf directory of the tomcat as given here:
    server.xml

    after all this i have taken a jsp page whose code is here:
    (the mysql database used is named as "testdb" and the table name is "user" which is having fields name,password and id)
    <html>
    <head>
    <title>DB Test</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    <%
    TestSQLLoad tst = new TestSQLLoad ( );
    tst.init();
    %>
    <h2>Results</h2>
    User <%= tst.getUser() %>
    Pwd <%= tst.getPassword() %>
    Id <%= tst.getID() %>
    </body>
    </html>
    and placed it in to the Tomcat 5.5\webapps\tomcat-docs\testdb directory and saved as test-db.jsp
    when i run this page on the browser i get a lot may errors stating
    org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Unable to compile class for JSP

    note The full stack trace of the root cause is available in the Apache Tomcat/5.5.4 logs.
    AND NOW WHEN just to get rid of such errords i try to include a statement
    <%@ page import="pkg.TestSQLLoad" %> in the jsp page code (and also place the MySQLLoad.class file in a folder called pkg and place it in the same directory where the jsp page is )and make it look like
    <html>
    <head>
    <%@ page import="pkg.TestSQLLoad" %>
    <title>DB Test</title>
    </head>
    <body>

    User <%= tst.getUser() %>
    Pwd <%= tst.getPassword() %>
    Id <%= tst.getID() %>
    </body>
    </html>
    now when i run it i get the following errors:

    in response to the above error i have even tried placing the MySQLLoad.class directly in the testdb folder along with the jsp page without keeping it in a package named pkg and then importing directly as <@page import="MySQLLoad" %>
    that too gave me the following errors
    org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Unable to compile class for JSP

    and if i do not use the statement <%@ page import="MySQLLoad"%> then also i get the errors like

    THE 2nd Method:
    in my second method i did the same changes in the web.xml and server.xml
    then i took a jsp page with the following code:
    <%@ page import="javax.sql.*,java.sql.*,javax.naming.*,com.mysql.jdbc.*" %>

    thanx for ur response
    as u said that the problem is more of a jsp page not getting compiled....
    me also pointed towards the similar situation providing all the surrounding situations
    which i have met and gone through
    i m still thinking that problem may b in the tomcat's server.xml and web.xml as well
    so better if u plz guide me in that regard

  • Result Set Too Large : Data Retrieval restricted by configuration

    Hi Guys,
    I get the above error when running a large dataset, with a hierarchy on - but when I run without a hierarchy I am able to show all data.
    The Basis guys increased the ESM buffer (rsdb/esm/buffersize_kb) but it still causes an issue.
    Anyone any ideas when it comes to reporting large volumes with a hierarchy?
    Much appreciated,
    Scott

    data cells might differ from the threshold that is effective.
    Starting with SPS 14 you get the information how many data cells are
    rejected. That gives you better ways to determine the right setting.
    Currently you need to raise the number to e.g. 2.000.000 to get all
    data.
    If BICS_DA_RESULT_SET_LIMIT_MAX is set to a lower value than
    BICS_DA_RESULT_SET_LIMIT_DEF, it would automatically cut the value of
    BICS_DA_RESULT_SET_LIMIT_DEF down to its own..
    Please note that altough this parameter can be increased via
    configuration, you should do a proper system sizing according to note
    927530 to ensure that the system can handle the number of users and
    resultset sizes you are expecting."
    Our basis team have subsequently apllied these changes, and I will be testing today.

    Thankyou,
    Being the OIM noob that I am, had no idea where to look.
    We do indeed have some user defined fields of 4000 characters.
    I am now wondering if I can disable auditing, or maybe increase the size of the auditing database column?
    Also, I guess I should raise a defect in OIM as the User Interface should not allow the creation of a user field for which auditing is unable to cope.
    I also wonder if the audit failures (other than causing lots of stack traces) causes any transaction failures due to transaction rollbacks?

  • Error on reverse on XML: value too large for column

    Hi All,
    I am trying to reverse engineer while creating the data model on XML technology.
    My JDBC URL on data server reads this:
    jdbc:snps:xml?d=../demo/abc/CustomerPartyEBO.xsd&s=MYEBO
    I get an error while doing the reverse.
    java.sql.SQLException: ORA-12899: value too large for column "PINW"."SNP_REV_KEY_COL"."KEY_NAME" (actual: 102, maximum: 100)
    After doing some check through selective reverse, found that this is happening only for few tables, whose names are quite longer.
    Tried setting the "maximum column name length" and "maximum table name length" to 120 and even higher values on XML technology from Topology Manager. No luck there.
    Thanks in advance for any help here.

    That is not the place to change.
    The error states that the SNP_REV_KEY_COL.KEY_NAME in the Work Repository schema PINW has maximum length defined to be 100.
    I donot know if Oracle will support this change but you will have to make a change to the Work Repository table SNP_REV_KEY_COL and change the column lengths as a workaround.

  • Rs.updateBoolean SQLException: ORA-12899: value too large for column

    Complete error is SQLException: ORA-12899: value too large for column "SMSUSER"."PRUEBA"."VLOGIC" (actual: 4, maximum: 1)
    Let's see the code:
    PreparedStatement ps=null;
    ResultSet rs=null;
    try
    ps=conn.prepareStatement("create table prueba(name varchar2(32),vlogic char(1) not null check(vlogic in (0,1)))");
    ps.execute();
    logger.info("Table created.");
    ps=conn.prepareStatement("insert into prueba (name,vlogic) values ('user01',?)");
    ps.setBoolean(1,true);
    ps.executeUpdate();
    logger.info("Data Inserted.");
    ps=conn.prepareStatement("update prueba set vlogic=? where name=?");
    ps.setBoolean(1,false);
    ps.setString(2,"user01");
    ps.executeUpdate();
    logger.info("Data Updated.");
    ; Till here all runs ok, but if we try to modify vía Resulset.....
    ps=conn.prepareStatement("select vlogic from prueba where name=? for update", ResultSet.TYPE_SCROLL_SENSITIVE, ResultSet.CONCUR_UPDATABLE, ResultSet.CLOSE_CURSORS_AT_COMMIT);
    ps.setString(1,"user01");
    rs=ps.executeQuery();
    if (rs.next())
    logger.info("Got record.");
    rs.updateBoolean("vlogic",true);
    rs.updateRow();
    logger.info("Column updated.");
    catch (SQLException E)
    logger.info("SQLException: "+E.getMessage());
    finally
    closeResultSet(rs);
    closePreparedStatement(ps);
    The trouble is that when updating via resultset, what is going to be inserted is "true" or "false" and not "0" or "1" as with insertions and modifications via preparedStatements.
    So systems returns error: SQLException: ORA-12899: value too large for column "SMSUSER"."PRUEBA"."VLOGIC" (actual: 4, maximum: 1)
    Cause it is tryng to insert "true".
    Can somebody tell me what's happenign here?
    Thanks in advance.
    Francisco Javier Ascanio Suárez.
    E-mail: [email protected]

    Ok, but why is this behaviour different in ResultSet statements than in Prepared Statements?
    As you can see in my example, prepared statements with set boolean runs ok.
    I like your "proper way", and it resolves my trouble, but it don't tells me why do I have to program a field update in different ways depending of Prepared Statements or updating resultsets.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Jdbc mysql error

    Hi,

    I'm thinking there is a priviledge problem. The mysql database is set up
    to alloow any user to connect.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Winston

    I had this problem a few days ago myself and finally went to the developer of the mySQL driver. According to the developer, RedHat, for some unknown reason, maps
    127.0.0.1 to "localhost.localdomain". To fix the problem, I had to change the host in my db table from "localhost" to "localhost.localdomain". In my URL, I still used 'localhost'. I also did this in my user table.
    Example:
    Update user set host = "localhost.localdomain"
    where host = "localhost";
    Update db set host = "localhost.localdomain"
    where host = "localhost";
    This works for me through JDBC on Redhat.
    Maybe you can help me. Where did you put your driver class files? I tried putting them in WEB-INF/lib and that didn't seem to work. I tried putting them in WEB-INF/classes and that didn't seem to work either. I keep getting, "no suitable driver" which means it has something to do with the CLASSPATH. Unfortunately, since I am using a hosting company that is unfamiliar with servlets, I am limited on what I can get them to do.

  • JDBC MySQL Connector/J problems when using in applets

    I wrote a piece of code which uses the MySQL Connector/J which worked in a normal shell application but when used in an applet it just didnt print anything. The code is:
    import java.net.*;
    import java.sql.*;
    class DB {
    static Connection c;
    static Statement stmt;
    static ResultSet to;
    public static String[] getUsers() {
         String str[] = new String[100];
         try {
              Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver").newInstance();
         catch (Exception E) {}
         try {
              c = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://localhost/PROGRAM?user=blah&password=blah");
              stmt = c.createStatement();
              to = stmt.executeQuery("SELECT usr_user FROM usr");
              for(int i=0; to.next(); i++) str[i] = to.getString(1);
         catch (SQLException E) {}
         return str;
    Is there a problem accessing a MySQL Database via an applet

    Applet runs out of a sandbox, if you print the exception, you'll see that you have run into security access violation:
    catch (SQLException E) {
    E.printStackTrace();
    }This will tell you why your applet didn't print anything. Just a firendly advice, never try to catch something and don't display what was caught.
    ;o)
    V.V.
    PS: To solve, your problem, you can either sign the applet or use a policy file to grant the applet the required access right.

  • 'ORA-01401 inserted value too large for column' - 9i

    I am migrating a java application from 8i to 9i. The application is writing data to a oracle 8i database without any problem.
    When the underlying database source is switched to oracle 9i database(same databaseschema as 8i) by pointing to 9i instance , the application is
    encountering the error: 'ORA-01401 inserted value too large for column' when trying to insert a particular field. The fileld is declared as varchar2(400) in the both the database.
    The debug output from application also shows that the column data being inserted as 10 characters.The insert statement from SQLPLUS works fine. So it's looks like an issue with the JDBC driver for the 9i server. I am wondering if anyone has observed such strange behavior.
    Thanks
    Vijay

    Vijay,
    Are you using OCI driver ? There is a known issue with OCI driver when using setFixedCHAR before an INSERT statement. This problem only happens with a string of length zero. There is no known issue with THIN Driver. This is fixed in Oracle9i Release 2.

    HI
    It is due to short  length  defined  for a variable , but  the passing values is higher  in lenght.
    Just  increase  the the length value in declare  statement.
    It is better  always give  possible maximum values while defining  variable length

    Hi muthu,
    // inserted value too large for column
    When your oracle insertion throws this error, it implies that some value that you are trying to insert into the table is larger than the allocated size.
    Just check the format of your table and the respective size of each field on your oracle cleint by using the command,
    DESCRIBE <tablename> .
    and then verify it with the input. I dont think the problem is with the DATE format because if it is not a valid date format, you would have got on error like
    String Literal does not match type
    Hope this helps,
    Regards,
    Bhavesh

  • Strange behaviour of jdbc-mysql driver

    I am trying to store japanese characters in mysql and display also after reading from the database using JSP. I am using the following code.
    <%@ page contentType="text/html; charset=UTF-8"%>
    ....... some code ......
    <%
    Class.forName( "org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver" );
    Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/DB?useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=UTF-8", "user", "pass" );
    Statement st = con.createStatement();
    st.executeUpdate( "insert into test values('" + request.getParameter( "imgname" ) + "')" );
    ResultSet rs = st.executeQuery( "select * from test" );
    while( rs.next() ) {
    %> DB Value: <%= rs.getString( "imgname" ) %>
    <% } %>
    I found one strange behaviour. I have to change the DriverManger.getConnection line to the following, to write the data correctly in the database.
    DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/DB","user","pass")
    If I read from the database using the same parameters as above, I am getting garbled data.
    To retrieve the data correctly from the database I have to use the following line instead of the previous one.
    DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/DB?useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=UTF-8", "user", "pass" );
    In short, I have to pass different parameters to DriverManager.getConnection() for writing and reading from the database. But it is not possible practically. I am using mm.mysql-2.0.8 jdbc-mysql driver, mysql is 3.23.47 and english windows 2000.
    I have tried the string.getBytes("UTF-8") and new String( getBytes(string), "UTF-8") methods, but not getting the correct data.
    Can anybody guide me how can I store and display the japanese character correctly?
    Thanks to all,
    gaurang.

    I downloaded the latese driver from sourceforge, but still the same thing is happening. Is there any other thing which I should do?
    Thanks

    I am now close to my goal, no errors when i run my application but nothing happens to the jTable
    Here is the code for the method
        public void gettableinfo() throws ClassNotFoundException, SQLException{
            String sql = "sql query";
            ResultSet rs = DatabaseConnection.query(sql);
            Object[] rows;
            Startup.mTableModel.removeRow(0);
            while (rs.next()) {
            //add the values to the temporary row
            System.out.println(rs.getRow());
            rows = new Object[]{rs.getString(1), rs.getString(2), rs.getString(3), rs.getString(4), rs.getString(5)};
            // add the temp row to the table
            Startup.mTableModel.addRow(rows);
        }rs.getrow(); finds 12 rows, as i have in my database. but it dosent add the result to the table
    the code for the jTable:
    static Object rowData[][] = {{"Row1-Column1", "Row1-Column2", "Row1-Column3","Row1-Column4","Row1-Column5"}};
        // array to hold column names
      static Object columnNames[] = {"ID", "Name", "Info", "Type", "Material"};
      public static DefaultTableModel mTableModel = new DefaultTableModel(rowData, columnNames);since i'm using the netbeans GUI editor it makes it a little more complicated. I've set the Jtable as public static and the "table = new JTable(mTableModel);" as followed in the example. It still dont work.
    Any ideas?
