JDeveloper JAX-RPC vs AXIS

Hi everybody,
I find that working with Axis and it's tools (wsdl2java) is easier than working with Oracle's SOAP implementation(webservicesassembler.jar).
One advantadge of using oracle's solution is that ws that
returns an Element type does not need a custom deserializer and Axis needs.
Which more advantages do you think oracle's solution has?
Why should we use jDev10's JAX/RPC web services?
Thank you.

Hello
The first thing is you should really say "JAX-RPC vs AXIS", since both of them are Web Services Runtime/Development APIs. And Jdeveloper is just a tools that simnplifies the development and developmen of Web Services using JAX-RPC.
So what about JAX-RPC vs Axis?
I would say that Axis is/was a de-facto standard fro developing WS, since it is running in most of the application servers - OracleAS 10g included-. Where JAX-RPC is the standard defines by the Java Community Process (JCP) and is a mandatory features of J2EE 1.4 specifications. So by using JAX-RPC you will be able to use a set of API that are really standard based. Also as part of your decision you should take a look in more details about the services provided by JAX-RPC: http://java.sun.com/xml/jaxrpc/index.jsp and the different standards involved.
Also I think that one important thing to take in consideration when you will make your decision is the future of Axis as we know it today release 1.0 If you see the Axis 2.0 Web site, it says that:
"Axis2 is an effort to re-design and totally re-implement both Axis/Java and (eventually) Axis/C++ on a new architecture."
Other considerations:
Some of the important things to watch when you select your framework are also related to:
- how you can interop with other framework (consuming or providing a service that is created with another stack)
- how to handle attachement (size, types, performances, ..)
When you will start to use Web Services in your system you may need to add different quality of services for example adding security (authentication, encryption, ...) or reliability (how I can be sure that my response has been received by my client application)
All the Web Service Management (security, reliability, etc etc) is not currently well integrated in the Axis stack, so you will have to use a third party solution to have this type of features. (you can for example use Oracle Web Services Manager for that purpose)
All these, and more, are more than just the 'SOAP' stack.
Oracle, JAX-RPC, and more:
First of all OC4J 10.1.3 support JAX-RPC as any J2EE 1.4, in addition we support WS-Security, WS-Reliability to integrate them to your enterprise, and a full integration with Oracle Web Services Manager.
Oracle JAX-RPC implementation has also specific focus to ensure interoperability firs WS-Interoperability compliant -[url=http://www.ws-i.org/]WS-I is an open organization that defines the interoperability around WS.- services, but also based on 'real life validation scenarios' -especially with .Net- where we use our customer applications to validate our platform interoperability.
Also, on the tooling side, our Web Services stack is fully integrated to Oracle JDevelope that allow you to develop easily JAX-RPC base Web Services (client or provider), based on several type of object/business logic (simple Java class, EJB, PL/SQL, SQL, ...); and deploy them very quickly to your application server

  • Jax-rpc and xsd x:any/

    I am using JAX-RPC to build a client for a web service. Some of the operations on the web service include an <x:any/> element in the response. JAX-RPC generates a corresponding javax.xml.soap.SOAPElement for each of the elements defined as <x:any/>.
    The web service operation, that I am building the client for, is truly generic. It takes in a parameter that is a sql query string and so the respones for the web service could and will be many different sizes and shapes. I'm curious if there are any frameworks that will aid in my handling of the SOAPElement objects. I am currently the JAX-RPC that comes with apache AXIS 1.3 for the web service client.
    Does JAX-RPC or AXIS provide functionality for handling the SOAPElements so that I do not have to write code for each custom query that may be invoked on this web service? I would prefer handIe this in a more generic and abstracted manner. I realize that I can traverse the SOAPElement, but this seems very ugly.
    Are there examples of how this is usually done.?

    Thanks. I am using Hibernate as well. Unfortunately, I did not develop the web service itself and are only tasked with invoking it. We have no control over how the web service is defined or developed. So, I am forced to deal with the SOAPEnvelope. Any insight as to frameworks that will help parse the SOAPEnvelope would be appeciated

  • OC4J 9.0.4, JAX-RPC, AXIS Client Stub

    Hi All,
    I have hit a problem and am wondering if anybody has any pointers :
    * I have a Webservice running on OC4J 10.1.2 Standalone.
    * I have generated Java client stubs by pointing to this webservice using the wsdl2java tool from Apache Axis and can use these generated classes without any problems outside any web containers.
    * I have created a jsp that calls these classes and can run this within the embedded server of Jdeveloper 9.0.5.2
    However...
    When I deploy the ear file containing this jsp into a 9.0.4 OC4J standalone / or full install and run the same jsp I am getting the following exception :

    Can anybody let me know what I need to do. Is there anyway that I can get this Apache client code (which uses jax-rpc) working within OC4J 9.0.4. I know the limitations of 9.0.4 and Jax-rpc - but I am wondering if anybody has a nice note to work around it.
    Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated.

    Richard, the error message you see below indicates that the JVM can not recognize your class file.
    java.lang.ClassFormatError: com/abc/mypackage/MyApplicationBindingStub (Illegal Field name "array$[B")
    Are you using different java version to run wsdljava and OC4J? Can you try using the same version of java for both of them?

  • Jdeveloper 11g - JAX-RPC 1.1 method is not supported in WLS 8.1 clients.

    Hi,
    I am using Jdeveloper 11g and migrating a web Service Proxy created using jdeveloper 10g.
    I imported all the proxy classes and when I try to run web service client In Jdeveloper 11g I get the following error
    "JAX-RPC 1.1 method is not supported in WLS 8.1 clients. If you are attempting to run an OC4J 10.1.3 JAX-RPC client in WLS, please see the Web Service Migration Guide for instructions."
    Please advise on how to solve this?
    which is the offending jar/library file in Jdeveloper 11g which is causing the above error?.
    Is the above problem there in the WebLogic Server Runtime also?
    Please let me know.
    2) I cannot generate web server proxies also with jdev11g because the wsdl has overloaded methods omitting the name property within the input and output message, ie, they have a null name. therefore Jdeveloper 11g is using the library which
    when called with an overloaded operation that contains null input/output message names, a duplicate error occurs because it sees other operations with the same name. so it is effectively not allowing to create the web service proxies.
    Thanks,
    Appreciate your quick response to the above

    Have you checked the 'Web Service Migration Guide' mentioned in the error message?
    Timo

  • Is JAX-RPC compatible with Apache Axis?

    We are starting a new project, and our design goal is to develop server-side API that is the exposed via Web Services. The goal is to have them run within the Sun Reference Implementation, and within Apache Axis.
    My question is, if we develop to the JAX-RPC Specification, with occasional SAAJ calls for attachment processing, will our Web Services run within Apache Axis? In other words, it Apache Axis JAX-RPC and SAAJ-compatible?

    It seems that the way they handle Attachments is different. Apache Axis seems to have its own way of handling Attachments, even though it is possible that they also support the standard JAX-RPC way.
    Generally speaking, I am not very happy with how JAX-RPC handles attachments, but this is a different subject.

  • JDeveloper 10.1.3 JAX-RPC and JDeveloper 11g

    I'm working on a J2SE Aplicattion using Jdeveloper 10.1.3.
    In JDeveloper 10.1.3 JAX-RPC works fine but I need works with Jdeveloper 11 and I have two errors
    javax.xml.rpc.ServiceException: Provider com.sun.xml.rpc.client.ServiceFactoryImpl not found
    or
    Jaxrpc 1.1 method is not supported.
    What can I do?
    Thanks,

    Hello,
    JDeveloper 11 does not support JAX-RPC 1.1.
    You can find some migration steps here:
    http://www.approach.nl/2009/01/migrating-web-services-from-jdeveloper-10g-to-11g/
    I think there is a Web Service Migration Guide available from the JDeveloper 11 help.
    You really just need to redefine the service interfaces, if you are trying to run proxies generated with 10g, you'll probably need to regenerate them.
    Hope this helps

  • JAX-RPC or JAXM or AXIS/GLUE

    Hello,
    I am starting with webservices and am confused with all the APIs out there. Should I start with JAX-RPC or JAXM to develop/consume webservices? Do I need SOAP implementations like AXIS or GLUE?
    Please Help !!!
    -ss

    Yes, it's pretty overwhelming when you're first starting out. My suggestion is to start with JAX-RPC because:
    1. it's easy to understand
    2. most existing web services are RPC-based
    3. there are many nice tools to help you create JAX-RPC based services
    Now you can decide which JAX-RPC implementation to use. Both JWSDP and Axis have JAX-RPC implementations. JWSDP is nice everything-rolled-into-one installation, so it's a good platform for learning (the tutorial version 1.2 isn't available yet but most of the 1.1 tutorial applies to JWSDP 1.2). Just download the JWSDP 1.2 installation package and the tutorial and you're ready to go (Tomcat is bundled with the JWSDP).
    However, I believe that many more commercial web service implementations are based on Axis than JWSDP. If you plan on deploying web services yourself, you may want familiarize yourself with Axis. Just download and install Tomcat, then download and install Axis. The axis-user mailing list at http://ws.apache.org/axis/mail.html is very helpful.
    And don't worry too much about which package is better. Any services you develop with either platform can be ported unchanged to the other.
    Good luck,
    Mike

  • Web services - JAX-RPC/Axis/OC4J

    Hi,
    We are planning to expose some of J2EE applications as web service. It is based on JAX-RPC 1.0. I have checked it with Apache-Axis without changing any code and it worked. Will it work in OC4J without any code changes?
    1. Does OC4J or Oracle SOAP server supports(or implements) JAX-RPC?
    2. Do we need to change any code?
    rgds
    Bala Murali

    Right now we have a JAX-RPC 1.1 with JSR 109 support preview here on OTN at - this came out at OracleWorld:
    http://otn.oracle.com/tech/java/oc4j/1003/content_preview.html
    The target production date is summer 2004. There are also plans to do another drop of this preview with updated support later this year and possibly again before the production release.
    We have quite a lot of functionality that we are targetting to flesh out our Web services support in the areas of reliability, orchestration, transactions and security.

  • JAX-RPC client with JDeveloper 12c

    Hello,
    It's the first time I use jax-rpc (I'm used to jax-ws) and looking for help.
    I need to create a client for a JAX-RPC web service using JDeveloper 12c.
    The customer provided to me a WSDL file (I don't have access to the webservice yet). In JDeveloper I created as usual a "Web Service Client and Proxy" providing that wsdl file, but I think the generated code is for a JAX-WS (since there are @WebMethod, @WebServiceClient and @WebService notations that I understood should not be present in JAX-RPC clients.
    Can anyone point me to some documentation about JAX-RPC client developing in JDeveloper 12?
    Thank you,

  • Apache axis, JAX-RPC, JAXR, JAXM, JAX-WS, JAXB, and Metro

    Are all of the following the different APIs for creating web service applicaton?
    Apache axis,
    JAX-RPC,
    JAXR,
    JAXM,
    JAX-WS,
    JAXB, and
    Metro
    --If so, which one(s) are most widely used?
    --If not, what are the differences among them?
    Thanks
    Scott

    I think your are looking for a full web services framework.
    Apache axis --> Is a WS framework. implements jax-rpc. Provides some features on its own
    JAX-RPC --> Is a WS framework specification. Your application servers/axis implement this.
    JAXR --> not an web-service api, rather a web-service registry access api
    JAXM --> Is an api for xml messaging. Your framework provider may use this.
    JAX-WS --> Is jax-rpc 2.0. Your application server provider will give implementation for this. Otherwise you can use xfire/metro as the implementation. Chose this over jax-rpc.
    JAXB, --> Is used for xml-java binding. Jax-ws uses this. But not specific to jax-ws..
    Metro --> Reference implementation for jax-ws.
    All in all jax-rpc, jax-ws and axis2 are three options. go for jax-ws if you do not have any other constraints.As for selcting implementation of jax-ws, if you are working on an app-server (and not on a simple servlet container or without a server), server vendor will provide that. Otherwise look for xfire or metro.

  • JDeveloper reports: The JAX-RPC extension is not installed

    Hi. I'm attempting to publish a JAX-RPC Web Service, following the instructions in the "Publish a JAX-RPC Java Web Service" document from Oracle Magazine (http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/webservices/htdocs/series/jaxrpc1/index.html). I get all the way to the point of creating the Web Service from the Emp.jpr (step 13). When I select "JAX-RPC Web Services" as my "Deployment Platform" and press "Next" I get a dialog saying "The JAX-RPC extension is not installed. Either install the extension or choose a differrent platform for the service." I have, in fact, installed the JAX-RPC extension (following the instructions at http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/htdocs/partners/addins/exchange/jaxrpc/readme.html).
    Does anyone know the cause of this problem? Thanks.

    I"m also getting this message while trying to launch mini bridge on a Mac. I went to the Library folder you noted and the mini bridge extension is not there. I have 4 extensions present: BuzzwordAccessBundle, CSREviewBundle, Knowledge, and STORY. However the PS menu item Window>Extensions, the Extensions is grayed out. Also when I click on the "CS Live" button in the upper right of PS window, nothing happens.
    I havn't used mini bridge much because I use Lightroom for organization, but I know I've used it in the past and it worked, so I can't understand how it would just disappear, and why these other things would stop working.
    How can I reinstall mini bridge and get the CS Live button and extensions working again?
    I'm back. I installed a couple of extensions to see what would happen and the Extensions button was still grayed out. Too shorten the story; it occurred to me to check what mode PS was running in. I had switched it to 32 bit mode so some not yet updated plugins would work. I switched it to 64 bit mode and bingo, everything works now, including mini bridge, though it is still not present in the Library folder you mention.

  • JAX-RPC Document style WS

    Is it possible to create a JAX-RPC document style web service that
    returns an array of bytes ?
    I have problems, but with jdeveloper 10.1.3 ´s tools.
    With Axis I have NO problems.
    Does anybody know why?
    Sincerely

    Hello Mr. Grall,
    I´m using jDeveloper 10.1.3 preview version.
    I use bottom-up design so I rely on jDeveloper to do all the "dirty" job.
    If I create a class that returns an array I cant create a document/Literal WS because jDev shows an error.
    But If I choose document/wrapped it works !
    Do tou know the reason of this ?

  • URGENT **** Need help for JAX-RPC Web Service Proxy deploy to OC4J 10.1.3.5

    Hi everyone!
    I’m really new to web services.
    I’m getting a *500 internal server error* while deploying my JAX-RPC web service Proxy to an Oracle AS, in an OC4J, v. 10.1.3.5.0.
    Running my client from my development environment (*jdeveloper 10g, 10.1.3.5.0*) everything functions correctly: from jdeveloper I can contact and use the web service defined by the following endpoint: https://www.medialibrary.it/services/federaMLOL.asmx?WSDL
    I created a "try_ws_client.jsp" file that runs correctly from my local development environment jdeveloper (that uses an embedded oc4j, v. 10.1.3.5.0) but fails when run from the test server (Oracle AS, in an OC4J, v. 10.1.3.5.0), getting, as I mentioned a 500 internal server error, a white page in IE but with FF the message says: The’s an error in the servlet .....
    Here's how I created the ws proxy and how I’m using it to consume the ws I mentioned.
    1. I used the jdeveloper “Create Web Service Proxy” wizard (File > New > Business Tier > Web Services > Web Service Prox) and in the WSDL document URL I put: https://www.medialibrary.it/services/federaMLOL.asmx?WSDL
    2. The operation ended without adding nothing to the web.xml file and creating the proxy files. One of them is: FederaMLOLSoapClient.java that have the WS exposed methods (es: public boolean createUser(String) ) + a “main” method with the example how to use this client to consume the WS.
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    try {
    it.reggiocity.provincia.mlol.proxy.FederaMLOLSoapClient myPort = new it.reggiocity.provincia.mlol.proxy.FederaMLOLSoapClient();
    System.out.println("calling " + myPort.getEndpoint());
    // Add your own code here
    } catch (Exception ex) {
    ex.printStackTrace();
    3. In FederaMLOLSoapClient.java I’ve create the method "tyIt":
    public String tryIt(String username) {
    try {
    it.reggiocity.provincia.mlol.proxy.FederaMLOLSoapClient myPort = new it.reggiocity.provincia.mlol.proxy.FederaMLOLSoapClient();
    if(myPort.createUser(String username)) {
    return “O.K”;
    } else {
    return “K.O”;
    } catch (Exception ex) {
    // logs error
    4. I created my try_ws_client.jsp file that creates FederaMLOLSoapClient object and calls the tryIt method, printing the “OK” or “KO” message.
    <%@ page import="it.reggiocity.provincia.biblioreggiane.*"%>
    <%
    String message = "";
    FederaMLOLSoapClient obj= new FederaMLOLSoapClient( );
    message = obj.tryIt(“AAAAAA70R10H226H”);
    %>
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/loose.dtd">
    <%@ page contentType="text/html;charset=windows-1252"%>
    <html>
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252"/>
    <title>prova</title>
    </head>
    <body><%=message%></body>
    </html>
    The situation is:
    My try_ws_client.jsp runs correctly from my jdeveloper and the user is created while creating app.ear and deploying it to my Oracle AS/OC4J as mentioned above, I get a 500 Internal Server Error.
    Any idea to find a solution to this problem?
    Please help.
    Take care.

    Hi,
    I am new to Web Services. I am developing a web services using oracle technology. I use JDeveloper 10g to create my web services using stateless Java class. Everything are so simple with clicking here and there to generate my WSDL file, web service stub and so on. Oracle use their own servlet as shown below.
    <servlet-name>MyWebService1</servlet-name>
    <servlet-class>oracle.j2ee.ws.StatelessJavaRpcWebService</servlet-class>I had created my interface and implements (Hello.java & HelloImpl.java respectively). Having a method public String sayHello(String param).
    Now, I want to send a attachment (or more than one) to the client using JAX-RPC. My problem now is don't-know-where-to-start. I have gone through a few example but most of the examples are so misleading. I understand that the endpoint of a web services is from servlet. Am I suppose to start my coding to attach the document(*.doc, *.pdf, and so on) to the SOAP object in my Hello.java or HelloImpl.java? Correct me if I am wrong.
    Anyone out there has a sample code of how-to send attachment with JAX-RPC with step-by-step (especially using oracle jdeveloper 10g if exist) article, if any?
    Please help, I am lost. Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.
    regards,
