JDeveloper UTF8 or UTF-8

Hi all,
Up until now I was using JDeveloper with the default ISO encoding which is iso8859-7 for greek.
I have just moved my data to a new machine and I thought that I 'd like to change the project encoding to UTF8. In doing so, I have run into the following problems
a) While .properties files need an additional conversion step with a tool like Kate, which seems normal., JSF documents still display greek characters correctly, which in my opinion does not make sense.
b) When choosing the correct format from the project options, I can see two utf9 options. One named UTF8 and another UTF-8. Which one must I chose and what is the difference between them ?
Anybody's experience is most welcome.

More Cf + MySQL 5 + Unicode/UTF-8 Problems

Here is the problem:
I am using a MySQL database that store data in Unicode/UTF-8
(the website/database are in Lao).
Settings:
CF 7.0.2
MySQL 5.0.26
MySQL Defaults: latin1_swedish_ci collation, latin1 encoding
Database Defaults: utf8_general_ci collation, utf8 encoding
These are same on my local computer and on the host
(HostNexus)
The only difference is that my CF uses
mysql-connector-java-3.1.10 driver while the host uses MySQL 3.x
driver (org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver class).
On my local computer everything works just fine, even without
any extra CF DSN settings (i.e. connection string and/or JDBC URL
do not need the useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=UTF-8 strings
added to show Lao text properly).
On the host, even with the
useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=UTF-8 added (I have even
tried adding
&connectionCollation=utf8_unicode_ci&characterSetResults=utf8
to the line as well), I only get ??????? instead of Lao text from
the db.
The cfm pages have <cfprocessingdirective> and
<cfcontent> tags set to utf-8 and also have html <meta>
set to utf-8. ALl static Lao text in cfm pages shows just fine.
Is this the problem with the MySQL driver used by the host?
Has anyone encountered this before? Is there some other setting I
have to emply with the org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver class on the host?

I also think it must be the db driver used on the host... I
just don't understand why the DSN connection string
(useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=UTF-8 [btw, doesn't really
matter utf8 or UTF-8 - works with both; I think the proper way
actually is UTF-8, since that is the encosing's name used in
Java...]) wouldn't work with it??? I have the hosting tech support
totally puzzled over this.

The data was entered locally, then dumped into a .sql file using
utf8 charset and then the dump imported into the db on the host,

and does that driver support mysql 5 and/or unicode?
I am sure it does support MySQL5, as I have other MySQL5
databases hosted there and they work fine. I am not sure if it
supports Unicode, though.... I am actually more and more sure it
does not... The strange this is, I am not able to find the java
class that driver is stored in to try and test using it on my local
server... I have asked the host to email me the .jar file they are
using, but have not heard back from them yet...

and what happens if you do use those? what locale for the
local server?
If I use just that line, nothing changes (apart from the 2 mysql
variables which then default to uft8 instead of latin1) -
everything works just fine locally.
The only difference I have noticed between MySQL setup on my
local comp and on the host is that on my comp the
character_set_results var is not set (shows [empty string]), but on
the host it is set to latin1. When I set it to latin1 on my local
comp using &characterSetResults=ISO8859_1 in the JDBC URL
string, I get exactly same problem as on the host: all ???????
instead of Lao text from db. If it is not set, or set to utf8,
everything works just fine.
For some reason, we are unable to make it work on the host:
whatever you add to the JDBC URL string or enter in the Connection
String box in CF Admin is simply ignored...
Do you know if this is a particular problem of the driver
used on the host?

Imported XML errors "java.io.UTFDataFormatException: Invalid UTF8 encoding"

Hi,
I had to display a mutli select table region in a Oracle Standard Supplier Site Manage page in R12. So I had a created a custom Stack Layout region and imported in to the database. The import went through fine. Then using Personalization i had created an item with the item style as Stack Layout and in the extends property i mentioned the region path details (xxs/oracle/apps/pos/supplier/webui/XXSByrMngSiteRN) and saved the changes. When i go back to the standard page i am getting the below error stack.
I tested this in our development instance and it worked fine. when i moved it to the system test environment this issue came up. There is no difference in the patch levels between the development and system test environments. Please let me know if you have any idea about resolving the error.

I have also tried the steps mentioned in the below link, I tried the encoding as both UTF8 and UTF-8 but the issue still persists.

Content-Type=application/x-www-form-urlencoded with UTF-8 data which servlet fails to interpret correctly .

My Environment is Weblogic 6.1 SP2 on WIN2K.
I have an HTTP client sending an HTTP request with
Content-Type=application/x-www-form-urlencoded
the data in HTTP request is in UTF-8. Note that HTTP client does not specify charset=UTF-8
as part of the Content-Type.
I have a servlet "VosXmlEvents" processing this HTTP request.
The HTTP request contains data like “Zoë” which the servlet below
interprets as “ZoÃ«” causing me to think that my deployment settings
might be wrong.

According to Servlet spec. 2.3 sec. SRV.4.9 Request data encoding, cut pasting
from spec below:
"Currently, many browsers do not send a char encoding qualifier with the Content-Type
header, leaving open the determination of the character encoding for reading HTTP
requests. The default encoding of a request the container uses to create the request
reader and parse POST data must be “ISO-8859-1”, if none has been
specified by the client request. However, in order to indicate to the developer
in this case the failure of the client to send a character encoding, the container
returns null from the getCharacterEncoding method.
If the client hasn’t set character encoding and the request data is encoded
with a different encoding than the default as described above, breakage can occur.
To remedy this situation, a new method setCharacterEncoding(String enc) has been
added to the ServletRequest interface. Developers can override the
character encoding supplied by the container by calling this method. It must be
called prior to parsing any post data or reading any input from the request. Calling
this method once data has been read will not affect the encoding."
Q1. Should not <input-charset> related settings in weblogic.xml for a servlet
helps container actually do some thing like setCharacterEncoding(String enc) on
HTTP Request before it call the servlet?
Q2. If not then that would mean I have to programatically call setCharacterEncoding(String
enc)to correctly interpret my HTTP Request?
Q3. If the answer to Q1 is "yes" then I will assume that getInputStream() or getReader()
methods on the HttpServletRequest will give the chacter in the client encoded
format which in this case is UTF-8, i.e I will get "Zoë" as in this example. Am
I correct here?

Thanks for the information. I have the following question then.
The Webserver I am interacting with does not recognize user and password provided in the channel. It accepts user and pwd in payload and in application/x-www-form-urlencoded content type only.
Sample Raw Post that server server requires looks like this

What i have done is that constructed the post manually in Java code in un encoded form and expected the HTTP Adapter to do the encoding. Having done this, the HTTP Server is able to scuccessfully parse the xml except for & and < , > chars which err out as invalid XML.
Is there an elegant way of doing above scenario using XML post and standard HTTP Adapter.

My jsp app is internationalized with utf8, with resource bundles in english estonian and russian. Each jsp page has <% page ... %> directive and request.setCharacterEncoding to utf8.
PROBLEM:
When my code sends a mail to an outlook client all the foreign characters come up great.
But send it to hotmail (and certain other webmails) and it comes out gibberish.
Is this a "microsoft" thing... is there a trick to it ? Maybe I need to spell "utf8" or "utf-8"... or maybe I need to do a manual byte conversion to UTF8 something like:
message.setText( new String(text.getBytes(), "UTF-8"), "UTF-8") ???
The cynical side of me would say msoft are intentionally trying to screw up open standards like utf8 by not processing them correctly ?
Can anyone please post some sample code.

Ok well my solution is definitely on the "Hack" scale, but it works.
Put a key/value pair in your resourcebundle for each language that specifies the charset.
# ENGLISH
mailCharSet = ISO-8859-1
# RUSSIAN
mailCharSet = UTF-8
So the resourcebundle in use by the user when they send the email determines charset.
It would be plausable to expect that this just isn't a "mistake" in hotmail... it sounds to be like deliberate sabotage of open standards. UTF8 and Sun seem synonmous to me, and well if hotmail can clobber UTF8 then it is to their advantage.
As good as windows character sets may or may not be, the basic premise on which they were built is flawed and they suck for international users. A person using a russian computer (like me) can't type an email mixed in russian and japanese at the same time (like I often do).

UTF8 terminal input and missing locales

Some time ago two of this forum's members (Tom Gewecke and Jun. T.) [url="http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=3526723"]he lped me[/url] get Vietnamese input working in X11. That was a huge help, and I appreciate it very much.
Although we worked around that problem by creating a custom keymap, the cause of my input problems overall, the lack of a UTF8 Vietnamese locale in the base OSX system, remains.
1. I would really like to install a Vietnamese UTF8 locale. I have searched, but I can't find anything on how to find or create missing OSX locales. Can anyone here help me with that, or point me to instructions on it?
2. I want to get terminal input (specifically [url="http://iterm.sourceforge.net/"]iTerm[/url]) working for my language. Can I get iTerm (or the bash shell running in it) to call my custom keymap, as we did with xterm?
I find iTerm in most ways a more comfortable terminal than Terminal.app or PathFinder's terminal, but its lack of UTF8 input is really a problem for me. [url="http://www.rift.dk/news.php?item.7.6"]this article[/url] explains how to get UTF8 input working for OSX terminals, but also points out iTerm's deficiencies in this area. I have added information to a [url="http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1623392&group_id =67789&atid=518973"]current bug[/url] on enabling UTF8 input in iTerm. I have also joined the iTerm mailing list, will follow this issue up there and report back here.
The lack of a UTF8 Vietnamese locale anywhere on disk seems to be to be a fundamental problem. I want to solve it. Surely, the languages supported by default under the OSX GUI should also be supported by the base system?
And I simply want to get Vietnamese input working in terminal.

UTF8 sounds fine.
Please always use UTF-8 and not UTF8. UTF-8 is the correct MIME charset
value; UTF8 only is risking confusion.

ByteArray.readUTF8 - is it real UTF-8 or modified UTF-8?

I am generating data from .NET/C# that is consumed by a Flash
application. To export strings, I am encoding as UTF-8. This works
fine for ASCII characters, but 2 or 3 byte UTF-8 encoded strings
are causing an error on the Flash side.
The question is: does ByteArray.readUTF() read real UTF-8,
not (java-based) modified UTF-8? Is there another encoding I can
use to ensure multi-byte strings can be passed from .NET to
Flash?

Problem With httpd.conf and mod_rewrite rules Apache 2.2

I have some RewriteRules that are working on my Leopard Client Apache 2.2 machine - but when I try to implement them on Leopard Server Apache 2.2, they don't work. I don't get any errors, they just won't execute.

I am modifying the correct httpd.conf file on the server, it just doesn't seem to work. - If I put the rewrite rules in the <Directory /> the rewrite works but it adds /Library/WebServer/Documents to the URL.
I also tried putting the rewrite rules in <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> but that did not work either.
mod_rewrite is enabled and running on the server.
I will post the rewrite rules again in the code brackets. Sorry for the long post. - If some one can try them out on their Leopard Server to see if they can get them to work, it would be much appreciated. Again, these work on my Leopard Client but I can't get them to work on Server.

Databind method call returns null in WebCenter Content Filter

Hi,
I have inherited some code that has an issue and I'm new to WebCenter Content and the Filters that can be added. We have a FileNameFilter class that starts off with the code

1) Can anyone explain what dataBinder.getLocal("IdcService"); is doing and why it could come back as null
2) Can anyone provide any links to documentation that explains Filters and a bit more about the DataBinder object as the JavaDoc isn't much help.

Enable CGI in Apex Apache

I've recently installed APEX. Everything from "apex" development point of view works just fine. But I amm having a hard time setting up/enabling CGI/Perl script in the Apache server.
I have used the standard setup therefor, my http server is http://myserver:7777/pls/apex. Now I've modified my http.conf file with the follwoing entries:

</Directory>I have change the permission on the folder and create a file called test.pl. When I run it I always get 500 Internal error. After checking the logs it complains about some premature headers and then states that the file does nto exist. This should really not be the case, because the test.pl is just about the simplest form possible and the apache settings ( at least I think, are to be correct). I test this by doing:

Usually a Wallet is created at installation time with a dummy certificate for SSL.
If you are planning to use a certificate from any commercial CA, you should go ahead and create a new Wallet, then create the certificate request and send it to the CA to get your certificate.
After that change the ssl virtual host configuration to point to the new wallet.

the used variable 'SOAPREQUESTMESSAGE' is being created in a procedure using jython.
1. Can we use this variable (SOAPREQUESTMESSAGE) value in the next step that is while invoking web service request (can it persist) ?
2. If not then how can we use this variable value to invoke ws request in next step ?
Would like to appreciate help.

SQL Loader Multibyte character error

Hello,
Oracle Database 11g Release 11.2.0.2.0 - 64bit Production
Database Characterset: WE8MSWIN1252
To load an utf8 File (UTF-8 Unicode text) i use option characterset UTF8 in controlfile.
All went fine until in textfile the column is filled up with 40 chars and
german umlaute included (ÜÖÄüöä...)
Loader stops (errors=0) and gives:
Record 146466: Rejected - Error on table 'TableName', column 'ColumnName'.
Multibyte character error
* use CHAR(40) and POSITION(start-end) for field description - no help
* modify column, from VC2(40 char) to VC2(50 char) - no help
* without characterset UTF8 option i got wrong characters for german umlaute - no help
* manual insert the data from this row with NO problems !
any hint or workaround?

on my linux desktop:
$ file test.dat
test.dat: UTF-8 Unicode text, with very long lines
my colleague is working on a windows system.
On both systems exact the same error from SQL Loader.
Btw, try with different number of special characters (german umlaute and euro) and there is no chance to load without the error
when to many (?) special characters or data is long as column length and special characters included.

Error in starting Indexer

Hi,
When i'm trying to start an Indexer via repository manager, i'm getting error
"Indexing aborted, active index cannot be accessed. File:'/app/stellent/content_server/search/index1/intradocbasics/style/style.ufl' does not exists.
