JDevoloper Data Modeling have "domains"

I use to use Oracle Designer several years ago to do data modeling. I am now using JDeveloper, which is nice to have one tool. I liked the feature in designer where you could create "domains" for different types of entity attributes. I don't seem to see that feature in jDeveloper, or it seems rather "hidden" if it exists.
Anyone know?

this is a long way if you build it up for the first time.
first you have to make sure that have your BI activated all things about 0HCM?
And you have to make sure about which sourcesystem/client that "Human Resources" are now working on?
or you are a new guy on BI field?
answer my 3 question first then I can start to show you how

  • Sql Developer Data Modeler all domains lost after changing to version 3.0

    I have two questions:
    1. Sql Developer Data Modeler - is it still a separate product? Or is it only available as integrated within Sql Developer?
    2. After opening a model created with Data Modeler 2.0 with the new integrated Data Modeler 3.0 I lost all my domain definitions. What can I do to avoid this? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler Viewer - domain datatypes

I'm using the SQL Developer Data Modeler Viewer (that comes free with SQL Developer) to view a model that was created in Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler (the chargeable product). The colums have all been defined using domain datatypes. I have an XML file defining the domains but I cannot see where in the viewer you can import a domian file into or where in the model's directory structure the file can be placed to be read by the viewer. Without this the columns are all showing as datatype 'Unknown'.
    Any help much appreciated, thanks.

two set of domains can be maintained in Data Modeler:
    - per installation - they are in file defaultdomains.xml in "datamodeler\domains" directory
    - per design - they are in "domains" directory under your design directory -
"Per installation" domains are used in your case - "per design" domains are "attached" to design - when you send the design to someone else, they are in design structure.
Your solution - to get defaultdomains.xml file from installation where design is created and to put it in your "datamodeler\domains" directory.

  • Data modeler - exporting domains

Excuse this probably dumb question but is it possible to export to ddl the domains created and used in the relational model?
I've created a model and generated the ddl but I cannot generate the database objects due to the references to domain items embedded in the ddl.

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler Repository

    Hi,
I would like to know how to save all my applications into the Data Modeler Repository instead of doing it piece by piece and having to create a dmd file for every single application I imported into Data Modeler.
In Oracle Designer, everything is in the repository and I can run reports against the tables and views belonging to that repository. So, I can produce a pdf documentation out of it. Can we do the same with Data Modeler?
    Thank you!

    Hello Anonymous,
I'll start with your first comment - "I would like to know how to save all my applications into the Data Modeler Repository ". The Repository is just for reporting purposes, as Dimitar points outs, so saving all your applications in the Data Modeler is merely File - Save. This action saves the current design (with all its models) to the file system. The main premise here is that the Data Modeler is a file based product and all models and designs are saved locally to the file system. This is a positive move for many customers who are now building applications in Java or using any of the application development environments that work with a variety of files. They are taking all the artifacts and placing them under version control using open source versing tools like Subversion. Using the Data Modeler, they can do the same.
For reporting you have a choice, one of which has also been explained. The action of creating a schema before you export the design is a one off step. Following on from this you can export new versions of the model to the same repository. The reason we did this was that many of the Designer audience wanted to write and run their own reports. So here you have a set of tables that you can write whatever SQL query you want to use.
The other reporting option is to use the integrated reports in the product and you do not have to export the design or open another product or write SQL.
Have you used the Design Rules in the Data Modeler? These are a set of "reports" for quality assurance purposes. There are many of these reports at all levels of the design which verify that your model is defined according to a set of database rules and general business rules and if you like, you can add your own rules.
I attended ODTUG last week in LA and was really pleased to listen to a number of talks by well seasoned Designer users who have successfully transitioned to the Data Modeler and who had many positive experiences.
Yes, the tools are different - but the one tool was not designed to replace the other - Data Modeler does none of the application design and generation that Designer does, those customers who have wanted to replace one tool (people are moving to the data Modeler from different tools) with the Data Modeler, have reported to me that they are pleased with the change.

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler API

    Hi,
My team is responsible for taking requests from a development team, creating a database change script, and updating the data model. We are trying to transition away from Designer but have been using some of the API integration to automate tasks through a custom database change request tool. This allowed the developers to fill out some fields for a the new table they wanted and my team would push a button to have all the updates sent to the data model in Designer.
My question is, does SQL Developer Data Modeler have anything like this? If so, is there some documentation?
    Thanks
    Justin

Very limited documentation is available in
    C:\Program Files (x86)\datamodeler\datamodeler\xmlmetadata\doc\index.html

  • Two Data models in one tile class

    Hi
I have a requirement where two data models have to be linked by a
common field and printed as one record in a tile. Is it possible to
associate two models directly to one tile class.
Or could you please tell me the work arround.
    Regards
    Ajai C

    Hi Jagjit,
I created one report with 2 SQL queries:
select count(*) from employees where department_id < :P_1
    and
select count(*) from departments where department_id < :P_1
And it worked fine. So your report should be OK. By the way, a report has just one "Data Model". It is possible to have 2 or more "Queries" in the data model.

  • Domains usage in SQL Developer data MODELER

    Hi,
I'm trying to understand how to use Domains in Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler. We use version 3.1.3 .  before I used Toad Modeler  where domains are just part of your main design.
Oracle data modeler has some different concept.
let's assume I'm working on 2 designs:  DesignA and DesignB that include relational models.
DesignA and Design B should use domains but list of domains in design A is very different than in design B.
Default domain file is located on c: drive where SqlModeler is installed. It is obviously unacceptable , so I need to change Default System Type directory in preferences.
And of course I want to have different domain directories for DESIGN A and DESIGN B.
So when I open design A then I changed   Default System Type directory  let's say to x:\AAA.   Then i close design A and open Design B and change Default System Type directory to x:\BBB
I checked folders AAA and BBB and they  have necessary XML files there:  defaultdomains.xml, defaultRFDBSSites and so on....
    Now questions:
can I rename defaultdomains.xls to something else like AAAdomains.xls?  Domain administration can edit any domain file with any name , but how  can I associate certain domain file with my design?  My wish , when I open my design , then corresponding domain file will be open automatically.  Is it possible?
If I open 2 designs in Sql Modeler and switch between designs  then corresponding domain files should be changed automatically as well.  Currently   I shouldn't forget to change default System Type directory every time when I switch models.  Is it the only way to handle it?
    Thanks
    vitaliy

    Hi Vitaliy,
    We use version 3.1.3
I recommend always to use the latest version. If you don't want to use beta (DM 4.0 EA is out) you can use DM 3.3.
Otherwise Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler supports two types of domains:
    1) DM installation domains - those in file defaultdomains.xml
    2) Design level domains - they are stored in design directories and are visible to particular design only. They can be created in following ways:
2.1 Manually - there is a property "Domains file" and you id it's not set "defaultdomains" domain will become design level domain and will be stored in file with provided name (without .xml extension)
You can change later the file for design level domains, however you cannot change file for domain already in defaultdomains.xml.
2.2 Using types to domains wizard you can generate design level domains
2.3 Design level domains are created during import of  DDL files (controlled in preferences)
2.4 You can import domains from specific file with domains using "File>Import>Domains" - you need to rename the source file if it's named defaultdomains.xml otherwise you'll get domains as installation domains
If the list with domains is too long you can define  a list with preferred domains (or/and logical types) in "Preferences>Data Modeler>Model" and you can use shorter list in Table/Entity dialog if check "Preferred" check box next to "Type:" combo box.
If I open 2 designs in Sql Modeler and switch between designs  then corresponding domain files should be changed automatically as well
If you open 2 designs in one instance of DM they will use the same file with default domains i.e. you'll lose domains in one of design depending of setting for "system data type directory". You need to go with design level domains.

  • Domains and Logical Types in Data Modeler

Been out of serious design work for a long time. Can someone provide a good pointer to descriptions on Domains and Logical Types and presented in the Data Modeling tool?
For instance I am having trouble tracking the following distinctions:
    Domain Logical Type
    LongText Varchar
    ShortText Char
    Text Char
    NText NTEXT
    NVarchar NVARCHAR
CHAR and VARCHAR are listed as Logical Types but not Domains. There is a TEXT logical type, but ironically, it does not correspond to the Text Domain. Varchar2 appears in neither list. I believe I ready the N* domains/types are for international characters (multi-byte?), but basically see no pattern here so was hoping someone could straighten me out.
    Thanks,
    Robert Kuropkat

    Hi Robert,
Logical types are abstraction for native data types in supported databases. You need logical types if you want to import from database or DDL script (mapping of native to logical is important here) or want to generate DDL script (mapping of logical to native). You can delete all logical types (only "unknown" has importance) and create your own logical types. In this case you have to map them to native database types. If you use only Oracle database then you can delete types related to other databases. Of course you can rename existing logical types if you don't like how they are named.
Domains are based on logical types - you need logical type in order to have valid domain definition. Provided domains are just sample. You can delete them - the only important here is "unknown". You can create two types of domains (it's usage point of view) - 1) per installation - common for all designs; 2) per design - they appear only for design they are defined. You also can import domains.
Also domains are automatically created during import of DDL script - it's kind of data type aggregation - domain is created for each used data type.
    Best regards,
    Philip

  • Tables in SQL DEVELOPER DATA MODELER seem to be read only and have a chain symbol in the upper left

I have a bunch of tables in my data model.  I have three relational models defined in this file.  In one of the models, all the tables seem to be read only.  They all have a chain in the upper left hand corner of their box.
I am not using version control, so that are not checked in or anything like that.
How do I unlock these objects?  Why to they appear to be locked?
    Thanks

It looks like you've linked tables across multiple models or designs.
    Does this look about right?

    Hi,
for the first part where you don't access I would suggest you do an authorization trace to ensure that the user has all the necessary authorizations.
and on the second part - yes the user needs to have credentials for the system that you trying to access

  • Data modeling dilemma for EAV oriented problems in Data Modeler

    Hello,
Dealing with EAV( entity attribute value model ) oriented structure of data.
    So this look like this:
    Entity( Entity_Id number , Entity_Name varchar2, Entity_Desc varchar2 )
Entity that list attributes and some meta data on characteristics of attributes:
    Type_Of_Attribute( Attr_Id varchar2, Type_Of_Value TOV_Domain, Unit_Of_Value varchar2 , Min_Value variant_type , Max_Value variant_Type )
Then we have actual data. Entity is described with set of attributes and their values. So aditionally to attributes on row form in Entity there are aditional attrbutes in columnar form.
    Because of sparsity...
However there in columnar form the challenge or issue is type of values so domains of attributes.
    For example:
weight_of_ person is number between min_number and max_number.
But another parameter for example mood_of_person is string from the domain which consists of set of strings/descpriptions.
Another possibility could be reference to some table of values ( key value ) that could be modelled as one:many relationship if put in entity Entity on row form of attributes.
But since this is attribute relate only to few intances or it is very dispersed....and for preserving table form..it was put in columnar form ..
    Attribute_Of_Entity( Entity_Id, Attr_Id, value,
-- when not normalized, could be add also unit like kg or lbs or inch or piece ).
My question is on good/succesfull practice of modelling for VALUE in attribute_of_entity?
Somewhere read that some databases have feature of so-called variant type.
Guess the objective is to modell in such a way that implementation of this model is as easy as possbile in
    issues like:
    a) validating column oriented form during entering or updating values
    b) consolidating queries when reporting
    c) agregating data when grouping when grouping data and preventing non-comparable data.
So to implement value as structure/complex_type with methods or there is any other feature supporting variabilty of the data along same column in the table. So logical design that would not cause too much complexity in the relational design and table implementation and procedures are handled as much as possible on the database level?
Thank you in advance for  comments, experiences, suggestions,

  • SQL Developer Data Modeler suggestions

Not sure where to post this (unable to connect to the blog from work due to network restrictions), hope this is the correct forum.
I am testing out the Data Modeler product. I've got a large database that I want to reverse engineer, then work with the resulting model. I used the import feature which successfully imported all 1849 tables from my schema. However, this created a diagram which wasn't really useful. A couple of things I believe would be useful.
    1. Add better connectivity between the browser that shows the table listing and the diagram. When I click on a table, I'd like the corresponding element in the diagram to be highlighted (and vice-versa). Also, an option to have the diagram show that table would be useful (maybe a ctrl-click or shift-click).
    2. Subviews - I don't see an easy way to add to a subview once it is created. So, add an option to the browser and diagram right-click menu to "Add to SubDiagram". Currently the diagram allows you to create a subdiagram, I didn't see an add option.
    3. More keyboard shortcuts. Specifically, CTRL-Z to undo, CTRL-Y to repeat.
    4. Defined column types. You've got naming rules, but I'd like to be able to define columns as a predefined type, like "Dollar Amount", which would make my column become a number(9.2) or something like that.
That's it for now - may be more to come.
    Don

    Hi,
Thanks for the feedback. Most of these are in the product:
+1. Add better connectivity between the browser that shows the table listing and the diagram. When I click on a table, I'd like the corresponding element in the diagram to be highlighted (and vice-versa). Also, an option to have the diagram show that table would be useful (maybe a ctrl-click or shift-click).+
Go to Tools > General Options: Select Diagram and check the synchronize with tree option.
+2. Subviews - I don't see an easy way to add to a subview once it is created. So, add an option to the browser and diagram right-click menu to "Add to SubDiagram". Currently the diagram allows you to create a subdiagram, I didn't see an add option.+
There are threads in the forum about subviews and you can look at the demos available online on the [Data Modeler|http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/datamodeler/index.html] page - we'll be adding more, but the import from Data Dictionary demo talks about subviews.
In short, select a few objects, right-click and create subview from selected, or right-click on the subview node in the browser and select new subview, and then drag the tables you want onto the new diagram.
+3. More keyboard shortcuts. Specifically, CTRL-Z to undo, CTRL-Y to repeat.+
We will be adding more shortcut keys.
+4. Defined column types. You've got naming rules, but I'd like to be able to define columns as a predefined type, like "Dollar Amount", which would make my column become a number(9.2) or something like that.+
These are Domains. Select Tools > Domains Administration, and add your domains.
I'm working on adding short demos for all these features and we'll build these up over time.
