JDO VS Oracle's business component.

Hi all,
I did work alwys with Oracle's business components for connecting to a db so I don't know nothing about other technologies to connect java's applications with db.
Now I would change and I'm looking for something about more flexible.
I read some thing about JDO and I'm here for tell you what I understand and if it is correct.
The first thing is that JDO is a sub level between the applications and the db (if it exit).
The second thing is that JDO must connect to a driver to connect to the same db.
The third thing, but I think it is the most important, the db it could be too many types like MySQL, Oracle, LDAP, XML, and if the structure of these db is equal I can change the db with only change the driver to use...
In practice, if someone uses the Oracle's business components, it is the same only mor flexible...
It is all right?
If it is correct, I have another question, I must create a java's class for one table or does it exit some thing that I can call like:
select [columns] from [tables] and I make it persistence?
Thanks for your help.
P.S.: Sorry if there are some language's errors.

I would understand a simply thing: is JDO a Sun's technology?
I read here:
http://java.sun.com/jdo/index.jsp
that the jdo 2.0 is an Apache's project and I have a simply doubt: is this the right place where I can ask something about JDO?
Or is better write on apache's community?

• Oracle ADF Business Component - Various data source...

As part of our recent design effort we are evaluating how ADF Binding/Data Control and Business Components can be leveraged for different data sources for an instance, we need to support Oracle Database (i.e. leveraging all goodies like ADF View/Entity objects) but along with it we also need to support legacy file data source (note archival of data to file store is already in place). From legacy file data source we will get data via Java interfaces which will be massaged/formatted the same way as data from DB.
Are there existing examples/best practices listed that we can look at, so that we can design the application with minimal code duplication.

Regarding best practices / real-world usecases, you might want to keep a few things in mind:
1. If you need to display data from different databases/data sources in a dashboard like page, you can make use of regions.
Each region can display a task-flow, and each task-flow can point to different databases.
This is nice and easy with ADF.
2. The challenging part is when you need to combine two different data sets into a single collection (such as a table).
Your only 'efficient' option would then be a programmatic VO where you take care not to make too many network round-trips to fetch data and handling connections /file descriptors properly...
Other options include:
Expose a web-service on one of the data sources and use a service based entity in your 'main' application.
You could access this via a ViewAccessor in your 'main' VO, fetch a large data set, then filter in-memory using a ViewCriteria or RowMatch etc. etc.
Hope that helps..

• Oracle 8 Lite & J Developer - Business Component Wizard

When I run the Business Component Wizard against the Oracle 8 Lite database it checks the connection ok, but fails with SQL Error [POL-5130] table or view not found.
This is at the step 3 of 3 - where it shows the available tables etc.
The default tables exist with data and this has been verified using SQL Plus
Any ideas ?

Oracle8 Lite & JDeveloper & Business Component - combination is not working. The next version (JDeveloper) will fix that (atleast that is what oracle finland told me)

• Issue Connecting from Oracle Business Component Browser - adf-config.xml

There are similar posts in the forum to this, but I wasn't able to glean from them what I should do.
Essentially, I tried Connecting by:
right clicking on a node under a Model project, and selected TEST.
When the Oracle Business Component Browser - Connect Dialog window opened, I clicked CONNECT.The Oracle Business Component Browser (Local) seems to have opened fine, but in the message log I see this:

Hi,
the adf-config.xaml file is not created by default and not needed by default. you need this to define custom skins or ADF Security.
For an example of adfs-config.xml doe skins see SRDemo sample app

• Oracle Business Component Browser hanging

I am trying to run a read-only view object in the Oracle Business Component Browser. The view object has bind variables. When I double click on the view object the browser comes up prompting me to enter the bind variables. After entering the values and clicking "OK" it lists the labels and fields for the return values, but the fields are blank. The query tests ok in the view object and when I run it in Toad, I get a return record, so I have confirmed that the data exists and the query runs correctly, but it does not work in the browser. In the log, the last line is: INFO: BC4J Tester started. It has been that way for about an hour now. It takes about 15 seconds to run in Toad.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Edited by: user9348710 on Apr 13, 2010 9:00 AM

ok, after running it in debut mode, it does list the query with the bind variables, then states: Reusing defined prepared Statement. Then finishes with:
Bind params for ViewObject: [the view object]
[397] Binding param "BindFirstName": Pat
[398] Binding param "BindMiddleName": X
[399] Binding param "BindLastName": Bass
[400] **** refreshControl() for BindingContainer :[the view object]_0PageDef
[401] *** DCDataControl.sync() called from :DCBindingContainer.refresh
Is this useful at all? Is it still trying to run it or are these normal ending log entries?

• Bug: JDev 10.1.3.1 Oracle Business Component Browser NullPointerException

During the test of the Application Module using Business Components Browser (right click on TechnicianService -> Test):
Oracle Business Component Browser: If you try to double click on ViewLink1 node as explained in JDeveloper Manual and set the TechName variable then you’ll get a NullPointer Exception.
The workaround is to double click on Technicians Node and then set the TechName variable but it would be nice to have it patched.

Hi,
this is what I crated as a test based on teh HR schema
1. DepartmentsView
2. EmployeesView with a bind parameter for QBE
3. DepartmentsView and EmployeesView linked via auto generated VL
When I test this and double click the link then I see two scenarios
- Departments and Employees are shown if the bind parameter has a default value
- Departments with no Employees are shown if there is no default value set
Double clicking the EmployeesView brings up the QBE dialog
Can you confirm that his usecase works for you as well? In this case the problem shows to be within you project

• How do I insert/Delete/Update a row to the DB Table from Business Component Browser

I am using the wizard and created a project containing Business component which contain some table.
When I run the project I could see "Oracle Business Component Browser(local)" and when I select some table from "View Object Member" I get a window displaying all the field of that table and I could browse all the info.
My Problem is when I try to insert a new record/Delete the existing record or update some record it never gets reflected to the DataBase.
When I try to insert a new row I did save and there was a dialog box displayed saying "Transaction ID is 1". But finally It's not reflected in the Database.
Can some one guide me how can I do insert/delete/update operation from Oracle Component Business Browser so that the changes reflect to the Original DataBase.
Thanks in advance
Jitendra

Jitendra,
This may be a problem of caching. If you do an update, insert, or delete, and do not receive an error, then the transaction should indeed be posted.
I assume you are hitting the Save icon after your changes if you are getting a transaction ID. Are you checking for the updates through another session (i.e. SQL*Plus), or do you then requery the View Object in the tester? Do you exit the tester and come back in and not see the changes?

I searched for this class, and it is supposed to be in uic.jar. However, when I opened that jar file it was not there. Did I set something up wrong, or is this a bug in jdeveloper?

When I am trying to open a VO inside JDeveloper for editing. The issue appears only to be with the VO's, even the ones that were automatically created at the start of the tutorial. Other types of objects can be opened for editing without incident.

• How to setup new OC4J instance to host jdev business component (EJB)

From Jdeveloper 9.0.3 I want to deploy a business component to an new oc4j instance running under 9ias version 9.0.3.
In jdeveloper I have built and tested an application server connection (type=Oracle Application Sever Remote DCM) to my new oc4j instance on 9ias. My understanding is that the jdeveloper deployment profile wizard will help me construct a profile to build what is known as an "EJB session bean".
Using EmWebSite, I have created and started the new oc4j instance, and i constructed a datasource to be used for the database connection.
Is there anything else that I will need to do to the new 9ias oc4j instance prior to building the deployment profile in jdeveloper, and then running the deployment? For instance, does this new oc4j instance somehow have the necessary hooks in it to support this bc4j component? Do I need to install any missing jar files? Do I need to define rmi ports ? Do I need to configure BC4J support?
BTW ... I have tried to pursue this topic from the Jdeveloper side but the support personnel are not familar with 9ias 903, nor are they familar with 9ias Remote DCM deployment.

Yes, you should be able to deploy an BC4J application without making any other changes to an IAS instance. For standalone OC4J please look at http://otn.oracle.com/products/jdev/htdocs/config_oc4j_for_bc4j.html

• Error JBO-33003 ADF Business component as an EJB remote

Hi,
I need to deploy an ADF application (model in business component and view in ADF Faces) in a multi-tier architecture. I deployed the MODEL project (bc4j) in an OAS’s OC4J instance. Now, when I try to test de application I get the following error:
oracle.jbo.ConfigException: JBO-33003: Connection name <my_conn_to_oas> not defined.
Also, I tried to connect to de EJB session from my VIEW project, so I changed the file DataBindings.cpx. I changed the line Configuration="AMProyectosLocal" to Configuration="AMProyectosAS_DS".
When I run the view project I get the same error:
500 Internal Server Error
oracle.jbo.ConfigException: JBO-33003: Connection name AppServerPenny not defined

What is the problem?
Where can I find the process to deploy in a multi-tier platform?
Please, help me.

Thank for your help.
I reviewed the datasource configuration and it is Ok.
The connection’s name isn't a datasource name. It is the connection’s name to the APPLICATION SERVER. I reviewed the bc4j.xcfg file and it has the following definition:
<ConnectionDefinition name="AppServerPenny">

{904}05B4D7F42A8C91433599EDC9FDE9B9B249A698997ABBAAAD13

</ConnectionDefinition>
Why does the test utility not found the AppServerPenny connection?

• How to make ADF Business Component Connection which is using XATransaction?

Hi all,
I'm using ORACLE 10.1.3 ADF business component, how to set this component using XA transaction? Is that possible to use xa transaction manually from application module?
thanks

I believe you mean to ask whether ADF BC uses XA Transaction.
You can use a JDBC datasource based on XA Transaction for ADF BC. You might find this link useful for an overview: [XA Data Source Interface and Oracle Implementation|http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/java.920/a96654/xadistra.htm#1058741]
What do you mean by "+Is that possible to use xa transaction manually from application module?+" - Do you mean exposing the transaction of ADF BC outside its AM..? If so, I'm afraid that its not supported.
Thanks,
~Krithika

I am unable to edit any of my business components. I get NullPointerExceptions when I try.
Any clue what's going on here and how to fix it? If I need to re-install, which directories do I need to copy over from the original installation to the new one in order to pick up where I left off (minus the errors, of course! )?
Thanks for any help!
Andy

Pardon the -bump-. I figured I'd give it one more try for feedback before I re-install and transfer all my settings, connections etc.
Thanks,
Andy

• Confused about the Business Component Developer Certification

Excuse me, I´m confused...
How many certifications are about the Business Component Certification? Three??
I thought there was just one, the Business Component Developer, which is the 1Z0-860 code...
but I also have seen these:
Java EE 6 Enterprise JavaBeans Developer Certified Expert Exam - 1Z0-895
Java EE 6 Java Persistence API Developer Certified Expert Exam - 1Z0-898
and now I don´t know which one to study for...
Are these better? Or just different? Or are the last ones just the new ones and the 1Z0-860 is obsolete?
Thanks in advance!

Thanks in advance! The basic answer to look at the question topics for each exam and and see what fits you. The question topcis should yield insight.
Additionally the following exam is an OCP
http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=41&p_org_id=&lang=&p_exam_id=1Z0_860
The other two are OCE, as far as I can tell. Typically more of an area in depth, but OCE's can vary.
http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=41&p_org_id=&lang=&p_exam_id=1Z0_895
http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=41&p_org_id=&lang=&p_exam_id=1Z0_898
I also notice the earlier exam is J2EE5; the later exams are J2EE6
Hope this helps a little, but this java stuff is too hard for me and i must stackdump.
