JFileChooser Ridiculously Slow

Question

I have created a small application but when I instantiate a JFileChooser object it takes (default constructor or not) about 10 - 20s to display on screen and browsing directories takes about 5 -10s.
Does any one know what might be causing this problem as other swing components seem to load very quickly. I am using the current version of the JDK and RE 1.6.0_2 on Windows XP Pro.
I used a FileDialog and this loads almost instantly but I can not get the FilenameFiler to filter at all. Any ideas on how to achieve the same functionality of the FileNameExtensionFilter
        awtFC = new FileDialog(this);
        awtFC.setFilenameFilter(new FilenameFilter(){public boolean accept(File file, String name){
            if (name.endsWith(".tar")) return true;
            return false;}});
            awtFC.setVisible(true);By the way my system is a dual core Intel cpu and has 1GB of RAM.
