JNI: Getting String | StringBuffer  to Java from C using input argument

I've written a native method in C which takes command String from Java, executes the command, and obtains both an integer return_code and a C-string result_string as an output. The return_code goes back to Java from the return statement at the end of the native method...my problem is, that I would like to pass into the native method either a String or StringBuffer, and use that to relay the result_string back to the Java code, as well. Eg., loosely, if I have a
JNIEXPORT jint JNICALL ExecuteCmd
(JNIEnv *env, jclass jcls, jstring cmdString, jobject returnBuffer)
where jobject returnBuffer is a StringBuffer created as StringBuffer(2048), I'd like to take return_string once I have it and do something like
returnBuffer = env->NewStringUTF(result_string);
(I know the syntax env->NewStringUTF is a bit different to what's in the JNI book, but it's what works on the HP-UX system I'm using.)
I know already that this particular bit of code doesn't work. My question is, does the general idea have any potential to work, or am I trying to do something that's impossible?

Your general approach works just fine. What you have to do is use JNI to find the appropriate method for the StringBuffer class, and invoke it.

  • Calling Java from C++  using JNI

    I have been looking into JNI, and I ran sample where the Java calls Native c/c++ methods. Now to do it the other way, having C/C++ to call Java method by passing argument and getting the results back, I think I need to follow the example in Chapter 5 sun, which is creating JVM in the native code, accessing the Java class and method, and then finally calling the Java method.
    First I like to know if I'm right above, and second if I need to pass a C++ class as the argument to the Java method and then the result from the method is Java class, what would be the best way to do? I know I need some to convert the class type some how.
    Thanks,
    Eli

    Are you also wanting to launch Java from C++? Unzip JAVA_HOME/src.zip and look at the source code for java.exe
    If you have native called by a Java object then you can call any non native method in the Java object from the C/C++ side. Example Java method, reportCurrentStagePosition :
        public void reportCurrentStagePosition (int fault, double x, double y, double z, double φ)
            if (fault == 0)
                reportCurrentStagePosition (x, y, z, φ);
            else
                faultMessage = "Stage Positioning Fault: X="+eFormat(x)+", Y="+eFormat(y)+", Z="+eFormat(z)+", phi="+eFormat(φ);
                System.out.println ("***Aero Fault Message: "+faultMessage);
        public native long moveLinearXYZPhiAxes() throws PositionException;Then from the native side of moveLinearXYZPhiAxes the obj is the calling object and has the reportCurrentStagePosition method
    JNIEXPORT jlong JNICALL Java_com_hypernex_goniometer_AerotechWrapperN_moveLinearXYZPhiAxes (JNIEnv *env, jobject obj)
         jmethodID jReportPositions = env->GetMethodID(env->GetObjectClass(obj), "reportCurrentStagePosition", "(IDDDD)V");
         if (jReportPositions == NULL)
              printf ("***ERROR*** about to call jReportPositions but it is NULL ***\n");
         else
             env->CallVoidMethod (obj, jReportPositions, 0, xFeedBack, yFeedBack, zFeedBack, phiFeedBack);
    }Since reportCurrentStagePosition returns a void you use the CallVoidMethod of env. The "(IDDDD)V" is the signature of the method. If it is there GetMethodID returns a non null.

  • Getting access denied error while importing file using input type="file"

    Hi All,
    I am using struts application wherein I need to import file for some purpose.I have used input type="file" for the same which goes like:
    <input type="file" id="uploadFile" name="uploadFile" size="50">
    I have the import button on which I have used onClick event to call javascript function submitValues() used to validate all the fields from the page which goes like:
    <input type="button" name="select" value="Import" class="CSSButton" onClick="javascript:submitValues();">
    The JS function then in turn submits the form and calls the action.The problem is sometimes even when the correct path is specified for the file to be imported results in access denied error.This error comes sometimes and other times it works fine.But when this error comes,I need to relogin into the application and then it works fine.I am using IE7 for this.
    Any idea why I am getting access denied error while importing? Has it got something to do with IE7 version or with the input type="file" which is being used here?
    Thanks for any help if anyone can provide.

    Hi Friends,
    I have gone through scores of examples and i am failing to understand the right thing to be done to copy a file from one directory to another. Here is my class...So let's see... C:\GetMe1 is a directory on your machine, right? And this is what you are doing with that directory:
    public static void copyFiles(File src, File dest) throws IOException
    // dest is a 'File' object but represents the C:\GetMe1 directory, right?
    fout = new FileOutputStream (dest);If it's a directory, where in your code are you appending the source file name to the path, before trying to open an output stream on it? You're not.
    BTW, this is awful:
    catch (IOException e)
    IOException wrapper = new IOException("copyFiles: Unable to copy file: " +
    src.getAbsolutePath() + "to" + dest.getAbsolutePath()+".");
    wrapper.initCause(e);
    wrapper.setStackTrace(e.getStackTrace());
    throw wrapper;
    }1) You're hiding the original IOException and replacing it with your own? For what good purpose?
    2) Even if you had a good reason to do that, this would be simpler and better:
    throw new IOException("your custom message goes here", e);
    rather than explicitly invokign initCause and setStackTrace. Yuck!

  • Calling external Java from ABAP using JCo?

    Does anyone know if one can use JCo to write a server application that can be called from ABAP.
    We are presently using JCo to communicate from Java to SAP.
    But we need to call an external Java program from within ABAP.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks for any input.
    Fred

    Hi Gregor,
    I was hoping you would reply to this -- these posted messages had been here for quite sometime now.
    Anyway, here's the case. Our Basis team is installing the JCo in our SAP development server. This is our first time to implement this technology, so no one has a clue at all.
    Got a couple of questions for you...
    1. What do we need the JDK for? Is it mainly for editing, running, and compiling java files (e.g. Example5.java)?
    2. Does the JDK need to be installed at the SAP server as well? Or it doesn't matter, as long as the java files will be accessible from where it was installed at?
    Thanks for any response!

  • Getting partial data in PI from ECC using proxy

    Hi Consultants,
    I am working on Proxy to SOAP scenario. I have developed almost 20 scenarios. All are working fine as expected except 1 scenario.
    This scenario is troubling me and the problem is, in inbound message of PI, I am not getting whole data which is showing in proxy test in ECC system.
    Can anyone help me in solving this issue?
    Thanks in advance.

    Abhishek,
    I am filtering messages by date not by status. And I do not have authrizations to see the Integration Engine configuration.
    So, I have requested basis team to change the trace_level.
    It is priority for me to resolve this issue and I guess it is proxy issue. But I am not sure and I am not able to findout where is the issue and what is the solution.

    ECC SXMB_MONI response payload and the PI SXMB_MONI inbound message payload is same.But there is a difference between ECC SXMB_MONI payload and the ECC SPROXY payload. If any one face this kind of issue then please provide me your inputs.
    As this issue is in ECC, I will log this query in ABAP Development forum.

  • How is the java.lang.StringBuffer class different from the java.lang.String

    How is the java.lang.StringBuffer class different from the java.lang.String class?....

    Read the API.
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/java/lang/String.html
    "Strings are constant; their values cannot be changed after they are created. String buffers support mutable strings."
    Although when possible you should use StringBuilder instead of StringBuffer.
    Always read the API at the very least before asking questions in the forums. Ideally you should do some google searching and poke around for an answer too. Otherwise you will get people barking at you.

  • How to get string value from xml in JSF??

    In JSF How to get string value from xml, .ini and properties file. I want to get string value from xml or text to JSF

    Just use the appropriate API's for that. There are enough API's out which can read/parse/write XML, ini and properties files. E.g. JAXP or DOM4J for xml files, INI4J for ini files and Sun's own java.util.Properties for propertiesfiles.
    JSF supports properties files as message bundle and resource bundle so that you can use them for error messages and/or localization.

  • JNI (Java from C) -- multiple JREs installed, need to use non-default one

    Hello,
    I don't know how many Google/forum searches I must have tried -- I can't seem to find a solution to my problem.
    I am calling Java from C. We have two types of environments:
    (1) 1.3/1.4 mix, and
    (2) 1.4 only.
    The mixed environments are configured to use 1.3 by default. This configuration will not be changed. The original developer's code needs backported to the mixed environment, but it has been discovered that his Java code is not 1.3-compatible.
    Since the code is not compatible with 1.3, I need a way to bypass the default JRE setting and get JNI to start a 1.4 JVM. Is there a way to do this?
    Thank you for your help.

    My "solution" is a kludge. It attempts to compensate
    for what I thus far believe to be an apparent lack of
    functionality. I believe the functionality I
    described should exist in JNI so that little jewels
    like my "solution" are not needed. What I am doing
    is improper. Therefore, I respectfully disagree with
    you.Except that your OP suggested that if you could replace it with 1.4 then that would be suitable solution.
    So if that is a suitable solution and you can in fact modify the JNI code then that is a solution that meets all of your needs.
    Regardless however you will note that the "The Java Native Interface" book in chapter 7 provides a specific section which
    1. Specifically points out why you can't depend on a generic VM loading mechanism
    2. Provides a specific mechanism which is OS/Platform specific, for doing runtime loading of the VM presuming certain constraints are followed.

  • How can I get String from Bytes

    I want to get String from array of bytes but i have some trouble from byte that it's lager more than 128. How can I do ???
    Please hepl me. Thanks very much.

    This program is only to show you what the relationships are between unsigned byte, signed byte, character, and binary values. Because of the constraints that Java has, the program code is not especially clean. Run the program and see if it helps. As has been said, the character output is dependent on the encoding in use.
    Here is a sample of some of its output:
    Unsigned byte= 189 Signed byte= -67 Character=  Binary= 10111101
    Unsigned byte= 190 Signed byte= -66 Character=  Binary= 10111110
    Unsigned byte= 191 Signed byte= -65 Character=  Binary= 10111111
    Unsigned byte= 192 Signed byte= -64 Character=  Binary= 11000000

  • How to get string value from database table using Visual Studio 2005?

    Hi,
    Im developing plugin in illustrator cs3 using visual studio 2005. I need to get the values eneterd in database. Im able to get the integer values. But while getting string values it is returning empty value.
    Im using the below code to get the values from database table
    bool Table::Get(char* FieldName,int& FieldValue)
        try
            _variant_t  vtValue;
            vtValue = m_Rec->Fields->GetItem(FieldName)->GetValue();
            FieldValue=vtValue.intVal;
        CATCHERRGET
        sprintf(m_ErrStr,"Success");
        return 1;
    Im using the below code to get the values.
    AIErr getProjects()
        char buf[5000];
        int i;
        std::string  catName;
        ::CoInitialize(NULL);
        Database db;
        Table tbl;
        errno_t err;
        err = fopen(&file,"c:\\DBResult.txt","w");
        fprintf(file, "Before Connection Established\n");
        //MessageBox(NULL,CnnStr,"Connection String",0);
        if(!db.Open(g->username,g->password,CnnStr))
            db.GetErrorErrStr(ErrStr);
            fprintf(file,"Error: %s\n",ErrStr);
        fprintf(file, "After Connection Established\n");
    if(!db.Execute("select ProjectID,ProjectName from projectsample",tbl))
            db.GetErrorErrStr(ErrStr);
            fprintf(file,"Error: %s\n",ErrStr);
        int ProjectID;
        int UserID;
        int ProjectTitle;
        char ProjectName[ProjectNameSize];
        if(!tbl.ISEOF())
            tbl.MoveFirst();
        ProjectArrCnt=0;
        for(i=0;i<128;i++)
            buf[i]='\0';
            int j=0;
        while(!tbl.ISEOF())
            if(tbl.Get("ProjectID",ProjectID))
                fprintf(file,"Project ID: %d ",ProjectID);
                ProjectInfo[ProjectArrCnt].ProjectID = ProjectID;
                sprintf(buf,"%d",ProjectID);
                //MessageBox(NULL, buf,"f ID", 0);
                j++;
            else
                tbl.GetErrorErrStr(ErrStr);
                fprintf(file,"Error: %s\n",ErrStr);
                break;
            //if(tbl.Get("ProjectTitle",ProjectName))
            if(tbl.Get("ProjectName",ProjectName))
                MessageBox(NULL,"Inside","",0);
                fprintf(file,"ProjectTitle: %s\n",ProjectName);
                //catName=CategoryName;
                ProjectInfo[ProjectArrCnt].ProjectName=ProjectName;
                //sprintf(buf,"%s",ProjectName);
                MessageBox(NULL,(LPCSTR)ProjectName,"",0);
            else
                tbl.GetErrorErrStr(ErrStr);
                fprintf(file,"Error: %s\n",ErrStr);
                break;
            ProjectArrCnt++;
            //MessageBox(NULL, "While", "WIN API Test",0);
            tbl.MoveNext();
        //MessageBox(NULL, ProjectInfo[i].ProjectName.c_str(),"f Name", 0);
        ::CoUninitialize();
        //sprintf(buf,"%s",file);
        //MessageBox(NULL,buf,"File",0);
        fprintf(file, "Connection closed\n");
        fclose(file);
        for(i=0;i<ProjectArrCnt;i++)
            sprintf(buf,"%i",ProjectInfo[i].ProjectID);
            //MessageBox(NULL,buf,"Proj ID",0);
            //MessageBox(NULL,ProjectInfo[i].ProjectName.c_str(),"Project Name",0);
        return 0;
    In the above code im geeting project D which is an integer value. But not able to get the project name.
    Please some one guide me.

    As I said in the other thread, this really isn't the place to ask questions about a database API unrelated to the Illustrator SDK. You're far more like to find people familliar with your problem on a forum that is dedicated to answering those kinds of questions instead.

  • How i get user info from ldap using java after authenticating user with SSO

    Hi
    I have one jsp/bean application as a partner application with SSO.
    It works fine.
    Now i need to get other attributes of user from LDAP who has logged into the application through SSO.
    using SSO java APIs i only get username, userDN, subscriber info.
    To get user's other attribute i have to user LDAP APIs for that i have to create on Directory Context, for the same i need userpassword.
    so here i my question, how do i get user password after he has logged in thro SSO.
    regards..
    and thanking u in advance
    samir

    Valentina,
    there's no way to get the password value from the directory (it's one way). Of course you can get the hashed (MD4,MD5,SHA-1) base64 encoded value (i.e. the value you see in OiD) but not the 'password'.
