Jnlp security

Hi all,
Is it possible to encrypt the content of the jnlp file when it's generated dynamicly via a .jsp for example?
thx
e07

1.) if you omit the href for the jnlp file, the app will not be listed in the cache, and cannot be run offline.
2.) if you omit the <allow-offline> from the jnlp file the app will be listed but cannot be run offline.
In either of these cases the applications resource are still left in the cache, but in order to launch
the app javaws would have to go back to the websight, get the jnlp file, and check the timstamps
on the resources that are cached (downloading any new ones first).
3.) You should be able to remove the jar files from the cache using the DownloadService API,
but a bug in javaws 1.0.1_xx prevents you (on windows) from removing files from the cache while
they are loaded.

  • JNLP Security Question

    Hi,
    I am trying to implement some JNLP security in my application. I want my application to have read,write permissions to a specific directory under user home.The tag that I used in the JNLP file is as below,
    <security>
                  <j2ee-application-client-permissions/>
              </security>  I used a .java.policy file under user home directory. The permissions in the file is as follows,
    grant codeBase "http://localhost:8080/myapp/xxxxx.jar" {
        permission java.io.FilePermission "file:${user.home}\\myapp\\-", "read, write";
    };I tried with "-" as well as "*" for the permission but none working for me. My application requires to create some log file under "{user.home}\\myapp\\" directory . Though the directory exists , still the application complains about access denied to that directory while launching the application. The error is as below,
    access denied (java.io.FilePermission C:\Documents and Settings\XXXXX\myapp read)Any idea what I am missing ? I tried doing the same with the respective JRE\\lib\\security\\ , java.policy as well as javaws.policy instead of the {user.home}\\.java.policy file, but none of them working for me.
    Appreciate if you could point out any way of resolving this.

    All Permissions working fine. With all permissions it's able to read/write all directories/drives. But I need specific permissions to provide only read/write to a particular directory. The issue is that Java doesn't respect GPO settings in windows and we should be able to restrict our application to access other drives, directories etc. The below link says we can do that with the help of a policy file. I was trying that but with no luck. Still appreciate if someone can point me any other way where I can restrict the JWS application to access other drive/directories using a policy file, any other way.

  • Debugging JNLP security problems

    As we all know, the latest Java update changed the JNLP security around a bit, and I, like many others, am having trouble with it.
    I'm not really here to ask for help with my specific problem, however. It's not the first time I've had trouble with JNLP security, and almost every time, I've only gotten around it with the help of mere guess-work and a fair bit of luck, and I'm still far from sure I've actually solved the problems correctly. The main problem I experience is that the security messages I get from the JNLP client are oriented towards end-users and thus not very helpful at all for tracking down the root cause of the issues. For instance, after this latest update, the JNLP client is just telling me that "The Java security settings have prevented this application from running. You may change this behavior in the Java Control Panel."
    Is there any good way to find out what security problems it is that I'm actually having? "Read the documentation" is of course the easy answer, but the security model seems rather complex and incorporates many parts. Is there some kind of "lint" tool for JNLP out there that can list the problems I'm having? Or is there some way to run the JNLP client in some kind of debug mode?

    Understood guys. But let me make a few points.
    1. Clearly I'm not the only one who had this problem. In fact, I wasn't the first person in this THREAD to have the problem.
    2. I'm fairly computer savvy, and have worked with Photoshop for several years.
    3. Yes, it does say c: in point 3, but I find it odd that in point 4 it does say Program Files/.... A very strange way to write it. Also, the c: drive is the default installation drive, so it's not idiocy for someone to assume that the file would be located on the same drive as you selected for installation.
    4. This is not about technically right or wrong. I never said that the instructions were wrong. I merely was trying to make a suggestion that would help people avoid the same trap I fell into. Was it my mistake? Yes. Would my clarifying suggestion perhaps help others avoid making the mistake I did. I would hope so. Also, as someone else suggested in this thread, Adobe SHOULD have written an installation program for the ACR 3.1 upgrade that did the placing automatically. After all, EVERYONE knew that ACR3.1 would be released shortly after the release for CS2...in fact Mr. Knoll himself was quoted in other forums about when D2X compatibility would actually happen.
    5. The purpose of these forums is to be helpful to other users--not to be patronizing or rude. I'm a big Photoshop fan, and a loyal customer. I'm also in the service industry, and I would bet that customer service experts would raise an eyebrow or two about the tone contained in certain messages in this thread, including from an Adobe employee.
    Just my two cents. Flame away if you must. But you might want to take a look at what I actually suggested in my last message before lighting up the torch.

  • JNLP Security Manager

    I want to be able to load dll's that are not defined in the jnlp configuration. To be able to accomplish this I have found (from a previous post) that I can simply use System.setSecurityManager(null), but I don't believe this is the appropriate solution. JNLP creates a security manager for a reason and I only want to override one of its checks which seems to be the SecurityManager.checkLink().
    Writing my own SecurityManager is a possible solution, but I want to keep all of JNLP's other security settings in tact so it's not really a route I want to take.
    Anouther possible solution I was thinking of using, which again I don't think is really proper, is to set the security to null, do the System.load, then set the manager back to jnlp manager.
    Is there a way to modify an existing SecurityManager to allow loading any other dll's (without having to know their name and location)?
    Thanks,

    Why don't you extend SecurityManager?
    I've never done anything like this (all I know is you must have "createSecurityManager" permission, but I guess you have all-permissions), best advice I can give:
    class MySecurityManager extends SecurityManager{
    SecurityManager sm = System.getSecurityManager();
    for each method 'm', override method and put a System.out of method name and parameters before calling sm.m(...);
    This way you can see which methods you need to implement and which parameters are passed, so you'll be able to write a SecurityManager that acts like default one except for what you're interest in.
    }Then System.setSecurityManager(new MySecurityManager());
    I suggest you check in constructor if sm is null (if it is sm=new SecurityManager()) of put an if in each overridden method.
    Let me know.

    I have problem with passing secure properties to application in JNLP. AFAIR, for secure properties to have an effect, you need to include a copy of the JNLP in the main, signed Jar. The JNLP in the Jar must match, byte-for-byte, the JNLP file that launches the application.
    sample.jnlp:You JNLP file is invalid. It has elements out of the correct order. To validate JNLP files I (wrote &) recommend either [YAX-V|http://pscode.org/xml/xmltools.html#yaxv] or JaNeLA. YAX-V is purely a validation app., whereas JaNeLA does validation + other checks more specific to JWS launches.

  • Netbeans module for JAWS doesn't know security section in JNLP file

    Hello guys,
    i'm making a program that is launched by Java Web Start.
    I'm using the Netbeans IDE.
    And I'm using the Java Web Start module for Netbeans (0.8.2.4.2.4), which provides me some handy menu shortcuts for starting Tomcat etcetra. The module also provides a GUI form for making the JNLP file, and if you make changes by hand, these changes are reflected in that form.
    Now, when I add this to the JNLP:<security>
      <all-permissions/>
    </security>the module warns: "Could not parse the document" and it regenerates the JNLP file from the data in the form. So the "security" section disappears. In the form, there is no place to let the module include the "security" section.
    Anyone encountered the same problem? Some workarounds?
    Anyone having success using the Netbeans module for Java Web Start and a "security" section?
    Of course I can build and then change the JNLP afterwards but that's not handy.

    Andrew thank you for your time...
    I think that page only shows a design that is not yet implemented, at least not in Netbeans 5.5 which currently is the latest release.
    Currently the JAWS options are not in the "Project Properties" dialog. They're in some visual JNLP editor, and there is a menu for enabling, running, debugging and deploying the project with JAWS.
    It seems like the only thing to do is wait for Netbeans having better JAWS support. In the meantime, work around the shortcomings of the module or don't use the module.

  • Signed, cached JNLP applet doesn't start when updating from 1.6 to 1.7

    Hi, yesterdays forced upgrade from Java6 to Java7 uncovered a nasty surprise for us:
    We're running a game client through JNLP embedded in the browser using signed all-permission jars. The certificate is definitely valid and hasn't timed out.
    When upgrading from 1.6 to 1.7 the applet won't start because of a supossed permission violation for the cached jars. Web start thinks that the jars in the cache are not signed (although they are).
    Deleting the applet cache through the control panel, or deploying a new version of the applet both solves the problem as then the cached version will be overwritten with a newly downloaded version, and everything works fine from then on until switching back to 1.6 again.
    Are 1.6 vs. 1.7 cached, signed jars not compatible? Something to do with pre-validation? Wouldn't it be a good idea to completely invalidate the applet cache in the JRE installer? Is this a bug on the JRE side, or are we somehow not using JNLP the right way (we're running the game for 2 years now, and a couple of million players have played the game since then on JRE6, so I assume we're using JNLP basically the right way).
    Also, early JRE7 preview versions didn't seem to have this problem, I remember testing JRE7 intensively a few months back without any problems, however I'm not sure whether the cache remained intact when installing the preview JRE7 runtime.
    Here are the console traces, please excuse the German, hopefully it's still clear what happens.
    Oops, unfortunately I can only send 30k characters per post. I'd be happy to send you more traces, and additional information. Thanks in advance :)

    Wouldn't it be a good idea to completely invalidate the applet cache in the JRE installer?Yes, I guess it should be an option for user of the app on first start after upgrade, not for the JRE installer. There are many large applications that users would want to avoid re-download.
    From the log, there is some hidden exception during first launch. The best way to proceed is to file a bug, including some guest/debugging access to the game.

  • Next-Generation Plug-In settings in the Enterprise

    I work in a company of 1000+ desktops and various user groups running various core systems. For background, we've been standardized on IE 6 for years, and we're trying to move to IE 8.
    I'm looking into an issue with one of our core systems. It's a 3rd party solution that relies on an applet that fails when the latest JRE is downloaded and the "Enable the next-generation Java Plug-in" is checked (which it is by default).
    I've been searching the web, and I know most of the work-arounds, including how to run ssvagent.exe -high -jpisetup -old from the JRE install folder. I'm almost ready to pass this information on to our desktop admins, but I have a few questions I know they are going to ask. I would deeply appreciate any help in answering these questions:
    What is the possible impact of disabling the next-generation Java Plug-in on other applets from other 3rd party vendors? Are we likely to run into some applets/plug-ins that fail when this option is disabled?
    The vendor of the app that's failing isn't being very helpful. Is there any info we can give them on how to recompile the applet so that it works under the default setting?
    What are other large enterprises doing to manage this?
    Thanks in advance for any answers. Until we have this resolved, we're unable to upgrade users to the current JRE.

    I tried the java_version param. It prompted me with a warning informing me that the app would run an earlier version of Java. I clicked run, and continued having the same issue. I captured this from the console:
    Java Plug-in 1.6.0_20

  • Jmxri running under javaw but not from java web start

    Hi all
    I've got following problem.
    I've got application that uses special jar that requires jmxri.jar This jar is black box for me. It provides some interface to get data from server.
    When I run my application using jmxri.jar and mentioned black box (jar) from command line with javaw, it is working fine.
    javaw -Xmx256m -classpath application.jar;jmxri.jar;(blackbox.jar); CClient
    In case I use jnlp, everything is same, I've got following error meassage.

    The default remote apps webpage will be shown with these demos. In order to remove them for all-users, You need to change the default remote apps url, not in the user configuration file, but in a system config file.
    unfortunately, because of bug 4933851, you can not just put a deployment.properties file in the javaws directory (untill update release 1.4.2_05, where this is fixed). Instead you have to put it in what they call ${deployment.system.home} which on unix is /etc/.java/.deployment, but on windows is ${windows dir}\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment

  • Applet hangs web server when upgrading from 1.6 to 1.7

    I've got a client-side printing application which works fine on 1.6 and fails on 1.7 where it essentially hang the server on the connect option to the server and loading the jar file. Specifics:
    PC Client running windows 7 x64
    Browser versions IE9, IE10, Firefox 17.0.1 (PC-client) all fail
    Client PC has latest Java 1.7.0 10-b 18 installed
    Web server is Apache2.4.3 x64 running on Windows 2008 Server R2 through the network
    Jar file is signed and the certificate is loaded
    Apache server is sitting on another server through a network connection. Backrev java to 1.6 and it passes. I've specified the -Djava.net.prefIPv4Stack=true option in the applet call but it doesn't fix the issue.
    The java console loads but then hangs on the connecting portion:

    What is most irritating is that a local instance for debugging (i.e. apache2.4.3 x64) running locally and running the application on the same machine) passes perfectly so it appears that it involves a network connection rather than a localhost operation.
    I noticed on a good connection the server returns with ResponseCode 304. I do not see that line in the log on the failing applet load. Apache logs set at debug show no errors even though the operation hangs the server.
    Anyone got any ideas on how to debug and resolve this?
    -Thanks
    -G

    More information:
    Installed jre.1.6.37 (x32 version) along with 1.7.10 (x32 version) and the applet loads. Installed 1.7.10 (x32 version) only on the windows 7 x64 client fails. I've done both the x-java-applet method and the JNLP method and both hang. The JNLP j2se version is set to "1.6+" so in theory 1.7 should jre should work fine without a 1.6.37 loaded.
    I've got wireshark dumps that I'm analyzing and noticed that there two OCSP responses (successful) but nothing after that, specifically where it hangs. Any ideas on how to debug this further?

  • Need help with applet related problems

    First of all hello to everyone. I'm new to this forum. I usually can solve my problems google-ing around, but this time I just ran out of ideas.
    I'm trying to develop a jni applet that can run native code for performance. I used netbeans so far and the applet works great when run from within the ide. At some point a managed to make the applet run inside firefox and iexplore, however somehow i screwed something up and now i can't make it run anymore. I don't really know what i did but i think it may be related to these lines in the console since everything up until awt works fine in the applet:
    basic: JNLP2ClassLoader.findLibrary: Looking up native library: jawt.dll
    network: Looking up native library in: C:\Users\Gladiator\AppData\LocalLow\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\10\1082924a-7851bf5e-n\jawt.dll
    basic: Native library jawt.dll not found
    Ofc i may be wrong.
    This also my be a local problem because a friend of mine tried the applet himself and said it's working.
    All the jars are selfsigned.
    below i posted the console output in case you want to take a look. Also I am interested about the "try again.." messages that seem to pop over and over again.

    I am sorry for bold, i came here to ask for help. I used bold to differentiate output from my questions since i couldn't find tags.
    I already validated jnlp using JaNeLA and got only optimization suggestions.
    As I said in first post, this works for a friend of mine, so it's possible a local issue with my java or something ...
    Also i reinstalled jre/jdk 7.0, then uninstalled and installed latest jre/jdk 6.
    Hope I didn't leave a bad impression, i just want help.

  • Some differences in Java settings giving me problems running a java program

    Hello,
    We have a Java app in our web-site. We haven't done that app our self and it has been working for quite some time.
    Now on my computer the java app loads just nicely.
    But for other users there java app crashes. So basically there has to be somekind of settings problem between.
    But we have checked the settings and I simply can't find the difference.
    The other users keep getting error that class not found.

    So you guys have any idea what setting could be wrong between my and the other users machines.
    We have Windows Xp sp3 and Internet Explorer 8 in use.
    I actually made a clean Xp install the otherday. Installing latest java and no security settings added from domain. Also I put the site on trusted sites and allowed all in IE. And I still got that error in that new clean Xp install. On my personal computer the Java app still works just fine. Unlucky the one who has done the Java app is not able to help us.

    Hello,
    I downloaded the jar-file and opened it with Winzip. The class in question was in the jar-file.
    I also put logging on in my computer where the App is working.

  • Applet doesn´t load in java 7 with next-generation plug-in marked

    I have developed an applet with netbeans 7.1.2 which worked fine until I updated from jvm6 to jvm7. The applet does not load properly unless I uncheck from the configuration of the jvm the checbox plug-in next-generation.
    Anyone know why in java 6 working properly with the plug-in next generation and in java 7 do not?
    I can do something to work properly in Java 7 without having to uncheck the checkbox?
    Thanks.

    1 - Java installed -> 1.7.0_05-b06. In Firefox works fine. The problem is in IE8.
    2 - I can run other applets.

  • Not working applets in win7 x64

    Hello,
    Maybe my problems comes from another programs in my computer, but most errors came/come from java (JRE), so I try to write a message here.... and hope to find a solution so that my applets will work. In the past periods I got a lot of script errors and watch at home only to a screen (white background with some text interchangeably) online it's really terrible for my eyes (as watching in the sun). And most program, flash-players not working online....pfff.
    I installed "jre-6u21-windows-i586-iftw-rv.exe" and restarted my PC, but again my computer did't show any applet, it makes me crazy. Again I got a 32-bit version on a 64-bits motherboard.....
    Java Plug-in 1.6.0_21
    Using JRE version 1.6.0_21-b07 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM

    During the opening of several sub-directories in the directorymap Java (1.6.0_20 + 21), I found it strange that some sub-maps were empty. In the sub-folders Java/jr6/lib/applet were no files and also not in the 'lib' subdirectory ../audio.
    I have search several times and downloaded several versions of Java and reinstalled them (because not working of it). I have read almost 100 pages for the correct solution, but without any result. I was searching in the folder to find information of the Java-applet or why their gone because. The Java controle on the website shows everytime "You have the last and right Java-version", but without working applets I cannot work well at my computer (offline and online).... it's a crime....pfff
    So please Help me!

    .Re: Rear channels not working properly in Win7\ First go to control panel, and sound, and then speakers and then to configure, and then choose 5. for your speaker setup and be sure to not choose full range speakers. Then go back to speakers and choose properties, and then Levels, and try raising your rear speakers a bit louder than your front and center speakers. For me, this works best as rear speakers do not receive as much as front and center anyway. I have my front and center set at 55 so I set the rear to 65 or 70. Then they sound equal. I turn on CMSS-3d in console Launcher and I choose surround, and then stereo surround. I do not like stereo expand.
    If you have a sound source that is already 5., such as playing a 5. movie in VLC media player, the sound is already 5. so it is not "double-upmixed" per se.
