[JPA] Saving big numbers to the database

Hi,
I have a JPA problem that I cannot solve. I try to save a large number to the database and JPA performs some strange rounding. For example, saving the number 9999999999999999.00 produces the following number in the database: 10000000000000000.00.
Actually, I'm not sure if it's JPA or the Oracle JDBC driver, but somebody rounds the number. That's bad!
Here's how to reproduce the issue:
1. Database:
create table big_num
(id  number(18),
  num number(19,2));
alter table big_num
  add constraint big_num_pk primary key (id);
create sequence big_num_seq
  start with 1
  nocache;2. Entity:
@Entity
@Table(name="BIG_NUM")
@SequenceGenerator(name="bigNumSeq", sequenceName="BIG_NUM_SEQ", allocationSize=1)
public class BigNum {
     @Id
     @Column(name="ID", nullable=false)
     @GeneratedValue(strategy=GenerationType.SEQUENCE, generator="bigNumSeq")
     private Long id;
     @Column(name="NUM")
     private BigDecimal num;
     public Long getId() {
          return id;
     public void setId(Long id) {
          this.id = id;
     public BigDecimal getNum() {
          return num;
     public void setNum(BigDecimal num) {
          this.num = num;
}3. Code that causes the problem:
     BigNum bn = new BigNum();
     bn.setNum(new BigDecimal("9999999999999999.00"));
     em.getTransaction().begin();
     em.persist(bn);
     em.getTransaction().commit();So, the INSERT statement that iss generated to the database is:
INSERT INTO BIG_NUM (ID, NUM) VALUES (?, ?)
bind => [1, 9999999999999999.00]However, the database contains the following:
SQL> select * from big_num;
                 ID                   NUM
                  1  10000000000000000,00Can somebody tell me if it's possible to save big numbers accurately into the database? If yes, then how?
Best regards,
Bisser

Disabling the bind variables produces the following:
INSERT INTO BIG_NUM (ID, NUM) VALUES (2, 9999999999999999.00)The database still joyfully contains a rounded number:
SQL> select * from big_num;
                 ID                   NUM
                  2  10000000000000000,00So, no, it's not an issue with the bind variables. I need to examine the JDBC driver but could you tell me how I can find out what Oracle JDBC driver is used by JPA? Or... is it some other JDBC driver (not Oracle, that is)?
Best regards,
Bisser
P.S. We use the following version of TopLink Essentials:
TopLink, version: Oracle TopLink Essentials - 2.1 (Build b60-fcs (11/17/2008))

  • Saving a workflow lto the database.

    Hi There,
    What must I have set up in my Oracle database to save a workflow to a database (and make it work!!!)?
    Regards

    Hello,
    You must install the workflow server into the database. The install will create all the workflow objects under a schema: owf_mgr.
    You build the workflow definition using the client tool: Workflow Builder.
    Once the process is built, you can choose to save the definition to the database (File-> save as-> pick database option).
    You must specify the workflow schema here.

  • Saving field values to the Database

    Hello ,
    I have created a GP Application where the user enters some details in the webdynpro screen which goes for Approval to the approver...now I want to save these values in some database like SAP R/3 and retrieve them later on based on some Id number....please help me on how this can be achieved...
    Any help would be highly appreciated.
    Anil

    Hi Anil, you can achieve that an vary ways. The most common ways are 2:
    - Calling RFCs from WebDynpro (remote function written in ABAP) that will store the data you want in tables in R/3(WebAS Abap database). The you can write another RFC that can recover this data using an ID as input parameter.
    - Creating an Entity in CAF with its entity services, and the exposing the corresponding application services as Web Services and accesing this webservices from Web Dynpro. In this case you will be able to store the data in tables in the WebAS Java Database.
    Here there are two links with info:

    Good day every one, Please i need little help, I have a list of record like this
    lblID.Text = string.Join("<br/>", numbers);
    gives the Numbers below...
    6131
    5241
    3978
    6824
    3842//To Save to the database
    int pin = int.parse(lblID.Text);
    Now i want to insert those Numbers to the database
    Persons ps = new Persons();
    ps.Number = pin;
    cdc.Persons.AddObject(ps);
    cdc.SaveChanges();
    it throws up error...
    what i want to achieve on button insert
    all Numbers will be inserted but before inserting the number it will check if those numbers exist first on the database
    it should be like this on the database
    ID Number
    1 6131
    2 5241
    3 3978
    4 6824
    5 3842
    thanks.. I do appreciate your time and effort

    Hello,
    >>Now i want to insert those Numbers to the database
    For inserting a list of items to database, a loop statement is needed. I do not how you get these numbers, I assume they are stored in a collection and you could check below demo sample to insert these numbers and I assume your person table is identified:
    using (DFDBEntities db = new DFDBEntities())
    List<int> numbers = new List<int>() { 6131, 5241, 3978, 6824, 3842 };
    for (int i = 0; i < numbers.Count; i++)
    int number = numbers[i];
    //Check if the local and database already contains this number
    bool isRecordExist = db.Tables.Any(t => t.Number == number) || db.Tables.Local.Any(t => t.Number == number);
    if (!isRecordExist)
    Table t = new Table();
    t.Number = number;
    db.Tables.Add(t);
    db.SaveChanges();

  • Error while saving the records in the database

    Hi,
    I am running into a wierd error.
    I have built a new page which contains the information about the employees. Some of the fields are updatable fields. The page shows the details of the person who logs into the page.
    I am not using EO in this page. The data is queried from the database from VO and displayed in the page and when the records are updated, they are saved in the databased using pl/sql procedure which is
    being called from AM. So i am basically not using VO to save the records in the database.
    The error which i am getting is,
    If 2 users are trying to update the page at the same time, user A's details are updated in user B's page.
    This is really causing the issue. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    I cannot re-open files that have been saved in Numbers version09 - it states "You need a newer version of numbers to open this document". This is the latest version & also the one I have created/saved???

    Jules,
    You may delete Numbers 08 if you wish, but some folks like keeping it around. Close all your Numbers docs and Quit the Numbers app, and the other Numbers app if necessary.Then click the Numbers icon on your doc. Then select Numbers > About Numbers, and in the window that pops up, see which version it is. If the Dock icon started Numbers 08, you can cure that by dragging that icon off the Dock and letting it go in a puff of virtual smoke.
    Now, to put the Numbers 09 icon on the Dock, double-click one of those known Numbers 09 documents so that Numbers 09 starts up. Verify by checkig Numbers > about Numbers.
    Now click and hold the Numbers Dock icon and select the Option for Keep in Dock.

  • Error message: "Querying or saving changes to the database failed."

    Hi all,
    I can sense I'm becoming a regular on this particular forum - the problem of spending 8 hours a day trying to get this software working!
    _*The problem*_
    When i try and setup a new device, or modify an existing one, I get an error message when i get to the Transcode Settings page. The error message is "Querying or saving changes to the database failed." After this I get a blank screen and can no longer see my settings.
    No amount of restarting has fixed this. And I cannot see a way to create a device through the client software and add transcode settings.
    Help?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ben

    Ah very good!
    Ok - it seems then that this works absolutely fine as a work around. I can create a device and then assign the device to transcode settings through the client adminsitration panel (which is indeed what I meant).
    So, there is a work around. Far less pressing now, but I would like to know why I'm getting the error message all the same - I'm now concerned about the integrity of the database...
    Thanks Tony!

  • What is the best way to create fields at runtime in the database using JPA?

    We use Oracle ADF platform to build web applications and extend to webcenter portal application.
    The current expectation from Java developers team is to change our development approach/method, so that adding some fields in the application should not required any development effort. In other words, when you want to add a data field (at least no relation to any field) in some form, it should be enough to save some metadata of the field to the database along with execution of related job/commands in the application. Additionally, we need to render the view dynamically according to added fields.
    Essentially, I think that such an expectation is not suited for the Java world, but if it could be possible or if someone has prior experience to do this, I would want to use it. We don't want to be interact directly with the database using native SQL through JDBC, as that would mean going out of the ADF framework.
    Suppose that, we define the metadatas of custom field(s), for example its type(string, number, combobox etc)length, isunique, mandatory... And then we run the execute command of this field definition to create on database and map to related entity object from now on. I assume that might be possible to add entity class as property belonged to class. Anymore when rendering the page, new custom field must be shown in form view if even there is no deployment process...
    There is Extensible Entity in EclipseLink. Has anybody got sample project about used eclipselink extensible entities? I could not find enough detailed docs unfortunatelly

    In the persistence.xml specify the property
    <property name="eclipselink.ddl-generation" value="create-tables"/>
    But, a JPA implementation is not required to create tables according to the EJB 3 JPA specification. The Hibernate persistence provider does, the EclipseLink doesn't.

    Hi,
    we are having 1 report which is using logical database PNP
    this is being shown in ALV
    when the user runs the report the output is shown and after pressing BACK button the below lines are being shown
    Personnel numbers skipped by the database driver
    Reason 1: insufficient authorization, no. skipped personnel nos.:
    this is being done by logical databse program SAPDBPNP
    is there any way to supress this mesasge
    thanking you in advance

    May be you need
    call your ALV in event
    END-OF-SELECTION instead of in START-OF-SELECTION
    otherwise
    Use fm
    call function 'LDB_PROCESS'
    instead of using PNB in attributes of the program.
    Please check the demo program DEMO_LOGICAL_DATABASE for how to use fm LDB_PROCESS thru call function.

  • Database Log File becomes very big, What's the best practice to handle it?

    The log of my production Database is getting very big, and the harddisk is almost full, I am pretty new to SAP, but familiar with SQL Server, if anybody can give me advice on what's the best practice to handle this issue.
    Should I Shrink the Database?
    I know increase hard disk is need for long term .
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Finke,
    Usually the log file fills up and grow huge, due to not having regular transaction log backups. If you database is in FULL recovery mode, every transaction is logged in Transaction file, and it gets cleared when you take a log backup. If it is a production system and if you don't have regular transaction log backups, the problem is just sitting there to explode, when you need a point in time restore. Please check you backup/restore strategy.
    Follow these steps to get transactional file back in normal shape:
    1.) Take a transactional backup.
    2.) shrink log file. ( DBCC shrinkfile('logfilename',10240)
          The above command will shrink the file to 10 GB.(recommended size for high transactional systems)

    "NEVER SHRINK DATA FILES", shrink only log file
    3.) Schedule log backups every 15 minutes.

  • Resultset in the same order as saved in the database

    Hi Folks!
    I'm having some trouble with an old development, because for some really strange reason, the same select statement i'm getting the same records but in different order from time to time randomly.
    For example in day 1 i can get:
    1 Text1
    2 Text2
    3 Text3
    And in day 2 i can get:
    1 Text2
    2 Text3
    3 Text1
    Is there a way to force the select statement so it always get it in the order as saved in the database?
    Hope someone can help me with this pretty strange issue.
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Gilberto Li

    Hi Neil,
    Your answer makes a lot of sense to me. And I agree that it might won't guarantee that bypassing the buffer will work 100%. However i'm still going to make a try see if it works, and how good it works.
    What i'm thinking is that I will need to redesign this old development and insert a new field to a table to add a position so I can order after the select statement.
    But if someone still have any other solution i will appreciate your help.
    Thanks again.

  • Saving a WORD or PDF document in the database?

    Hello,
    If I have a WORD document, PDF document or EXCEL document. How can I save them in the database? What type of LOB I should use.
    What I would like to do is have a webpage with a text box and a browse button. The user can then use the browse buttton to find the file and have its location inserted into the text box. Then the user can click another button to add the file to the database.
    Once the file is in the database - I also want to have an update page where the user can change the files saved in the database or delete them also
    Thanks
    Doug

    Well, Word and Excel documents are binary, so you will need a Binary LOB (BLOB).
    I have recently been storing/retrieving BLOBs through ASP/ADO . . .
    BLOBs are limited to 4GB, but ADO has a limit of 2GB. Hopefully, that will not be a problem.
    If you are using ODBC, then be aware that you need to enable LOBs by setting LOB=T in the connection string. If you are using ODBC with stored procedures, then there is a bug that causes the LOBs to be truncated to 32K, which is fixed in 9.2.0.6.5. A colleague tells me that the Microsoft ODBC Driver for Oracle works with LONGs but not with LOBs.
    If you are using OleDB with stored procedures, then you'll need to set the "SPPrmsLOB" property to TRUE.
    When uploading BLOBs through ADO, you need to set the parameter size to 1 higher than the actual size, otherwise you get an error.
    When retrieving the BLOBs through stored procedures as OUT parameters, you need to set the parameter size to larger than the BLOB, otherwise it gets truncated. I do not like having to specify 2GB for a file that might only be 32K, so I prefer to return a record set via a REF CURSOR.

    I have 2 very big SQL (almost 15000 char each). I have to store them in 2 saperate columns in a database table.

    That would depend on your Adobe support contract and if your organization has a TAM assigned.  You should check with your organization's Adobe contact and see what support options your organization has purchased.
    Having said that, this forum has a few people that may be able to help (but the forum does not have a SLA associated with it)
    2 - If I  put this in my component.xml file, in step  1:
    <component-id>com.rsd.adobe.livecycle.RSDFoldersConnector</component-id>
    <version>1.0</version>
    <import-packages><package  version="1.0">com.rsd.simpleApiFolders</package>  </import-packages>
    If I change the  version to 1.1 and remove the  'import-packages' (in step 2) , will the new component need the  com.rsd.simpleApiFolders package. It seems that is still needs it.If your component class needs the simpleApiFolders class then yes, you still need it.  Think of import-packages like a class-path statement (but with packages and not jars).  Its not physically moving the package into your application, but allowing you to access it from another container.
    3 - How is the  'import-packages' information saved in the  database, and how  long?
    As far as I know they are not imported into the database. As I stated above, I believe that the import-packages just allows you to point to classes that are in the app server's classpath, but are not physically in you component jar file.  As long as that class is in the app server class-path (or in the Adobe EAR file) then you should be able to access it.  Is the jar file containing the simpleApiFolders class in the app server's lib directory?
