Jpegs to imovie to QT to Video2SWF settings

OK tough 3 part question...
I've been trying to figure this out for months but can't seem to find a clear answer on this anywhere. I've looked at Roddy, OT, and all the usual suspects iweb help sites.
I am using Photoshop jpegs (of my photography) to import into imovie, export/share as QT mov files and then either convert to flash using Video2SWF (or keep as QT file). Basically making my own slide show with transitions exactly to the size I need it. The final size in iweb needs to be 942 x 596 to fit my space.
What I'm asking is
1) what size to save my photoshop jpegs.
2) what settings to use to export/share from imovie to QT and then...
3) if I should convert to flash... what settings to use with Video2SWF.
All without losing quality, keeping my dimensions and not making the file too large to load.
I created a QT file via imovie using photoshop jpegs and dropped it into iweb. This is the file that WAS automatically playing on my home page the last couple of days. I originally had the photoshop jpegs at 1650 x 1044 and exported/shared from imovie as a 980 x 620 QT mov file. This made a 56.6 meg file. It doesn't take long for me to load but others have told me it did... (Roddy/OT) not sure if you let it play or not when you were looking at my files the last couple of days... anyway, I thought that would be way too big a file to load. Then I took that file and used Video2SWF and got a 15mb SWF file. The quality does not seem to be that great. It's blurry and lower res for sure. you can see this on the FAQ page now: http://web.me.com/lisasandlerdesign/lisasandlerphotography/faq.html
So I remade the imovie QT file using jpegs at 942 x 596 this file was 22.2 mb. I thought maybe I should get it down in size more.
(Side note: I don't understand when I drag the mov file into iweb it comes in as 300x90 and needs to be sized up to 942x596)
So I made a smaller QT file 15.4 mb out of the 942x596 jpegs. This is the one playing now on my home page (http://web.me.com/lisasandlerdesign/lisasandlerphotography/Home.html). Unfortunately I can definitely see that the quality is not as good and my photos look blurry.
Does anyone have a formula that works for figuring out sizes and settings for this without file sizes getting too big but keeping best quality?
I know it's a doozy of a question so if something doesn't make sense please ask me!
thanks, Lisa

What planet are you from???!?!?!? Thanks for choosing to make up your own answers and ignore my specific questions.
Don't give me BS about coming to the point... send me to some useless information and tell me I'm lying. It WAS sized proportionally. movie IS 800x506 which is proportional to 942x596, not 942x612. That was a typo re 300x(1)90. I did not resize it disproportionally. When I click on 'use original size' the file is 800x506 (then sized up to 942x596) and fits in exactly the same space as a 942x596 box...
With the bigger file... iweb tells me the file is 942x596, my jpegs are 942x596 and imovie settings are 942x596. Everywhere the #s are 942x596 no matter how you slice it. SO I DID CREATE A MOVIE THE SIZE I WANTED IT. It was too large. Re authority... you're telling me it's ok to have a 56.6 mb file playing on my site? You'd be the first.
And it only took me 1/2 hour to do it... Mr. I Made Coffee and did it in an hour. Was there alcohol in your coffee? Because you sure seemed to be reading someone else's post and not mine. I was referring to researching for months to find an answer on correct sizes for quality. The file itself was easy and quick to make.
I don't use keynote so that's useless to me. There's no reason I should have to and that was not my question.
thanks for nothing, Wydor. Oh I take that back. The 'Use Original Size' part was helpful. I'm certainly not going to listen to you because you have no authority or credibility in my eyes not to mention you're a pompous jerk.
Please don't ever waste my time by responding to my posts.
NEXT, HELP please!

  • Making a video from jpegs in IMovie 9

    Hi,
An animator made me a video for a song I created. He gave individual Jpegs for every frame.
I brought the JPegs into IMovie and but when I play the video it is jumping. Is there a way to select
each still to be 1 frame and how do I smooth out the frames.
    thanks,
    Marc

    Marc,
A better solution might be to open the jpegs as an image sequence in QuickTime Pro and then Export it from there.
I don't think you'll be able to get each image to be short enough in iMovie for smooth playback.
The downside is that QuickTime Pro is $30.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D3380Z/A/quicktime-7-pro-for-mac-os-x
Another solution might be to ask your animator if he or she can give you a version of the sequence as a .mov file.

  • IMovie 6.0.4 - photo settings window - gone!

The photo settings window in iMovie 6 does not appear, nor can I figure out how to activate it. So I'm stuck with the Ken Burns settings of some now forgotten project.
Would re-installation of iMovie 6 help? If so, where do I get the re-install?
I'm stuck with iMovie 6 due to G4 Mac.
Appreciate any and all help with this. Thanks, Steve

I am having the same problem.
I am using iMovie 6.0.3 and I can't see the photo when I click on photo settings. It was working earlier. Very frustrating.

  • Imovie 09 export to quicktime settings.

    Hi,
I would like to export video clips that I shot using the iPhone 4 (720p) from imovie 09' however, I am having some difficulties with 'export using quicktime' settings
What is the best settings for export in this case?
Also what is the difference between these two; '1080 x 720p HD vs HD 1080 x 720p 16:9' from the export size settings?
Many thanks for your cooperation and efforts committed in dealing with this.

Welcome BarrenRegions to the  iMovie boards ..
no way to answer that question.. you have to compare apples with peaches.. (German proverb):
iMHD≥6 was a dv-only editor (and AIC, but this is another story...); it handles dv lossless.. frequent contributor lennart once made a test of ex- and reimporting a few dozends time the same clip = no loss of pic quality.
    now iM08/09:
it handles dv not as dv internally anymore; therefore it accepts lots of other codecs (mp2, avchd, h264...).. so, depending of your source, the export can be lossy.
we have mile-long threads about that, search for posts from Steve Mullen and Euisung Lee who did research this issue +ad nauseam+
as far as I followed that discussion: there's a 'trick', to convert - after import into iM08/09 - the imports to AppleIntermediate with tools as QTpro or Mpeg Streamclip. that blows-up size, but forces iM08/09 to keep quality a 100%...
.. sorry for being less helpful, even as a 'Silverback' on this board, all that is +a bit+ beyond my skills, needs and understanding.. to be honest: I switched awhile ago to FinalCutExpress, and will use iM09 when I'll get a new rec-device.. hopefully this year (Santa! do you listen?!...)

  • How do I export a jpeg from iMovie 11?

I must admit, I am new to Mac and am happy to have converted, so be gentle on me.   I have read a number of the archived post, haven't found any recent posts, but I am unable to "reveal in finder".   I have attempted both methods, from event as well as project.  The capture is always 4 secs, do I need to make other adjustments?  It doesn't seem to work for me as described in the older posts.

    Greetings Appleman,
I am a Geezer and totally baffled by some of these functions.  I first selected a clip, moved it into the "Project" window. Then selected the clip in iMovie project window, but when I "right click" I have no idea of where to find "Reveal in Finder."  it is not in the window that opens up with a right click.  (I get a whole list of functions from "Play, Play Selection, Loop Selection, -- Cut, Copy, Paste, etc., but nothing says "Reveal in Finder."  All I want to do is snatch a still photo out of my video.  Any suggestions?

  • Where is the codec photo-jpeg in iMovie 10???

when I export a video made with iMovie 10 where are the options that allow me to choose various video formats including the PhotoJPEG?

Because with the videos that I create I use them on software such as Modul8 or Resolume Arena to make live visuals at the disco. aren't use videos mp4 with h264 codec in that software. With the old iMovie was possible to export with this format.. do not understand why In the new iMovie is not possible.

  • Poor Quality Importing .jpeg into iMovie

When I import a picture into iMovie it comes out extremely blurry. When I select the photo from "Media" and from iPhotos the picture looks great up top. When I drag the image down to build the project it gets insanely blurry. I've tried different things including importing on the "Clips" page rather than dropping from the "Media" page.
    Please help.
    Thanks!

    Hello Rob,
if you check through discussions, you'll find a number of posts adressing this subject.

Pictures are different from video. In addition to that the quality of your movie/slideshow should be judged on a TV screen. iMovie provides you with a preview (even if it's a good one)

  • All the photo i import from iphoto (JPEG) to imovie is blank.

    Hello..!
    I need some help..!
I using powermac G4 cube, i just upgrade to tiger n ilife 06, when i want to import my photo from iphoto to imovie all the image is blank. But i unclick the ken burn effect, i can import the photo i have image...!
Got someone know how to solve the problem..!
    Thank..!

I appreciate all of your responses to my problem.  There is no doubt that I have a lot to learn about Aperture.  I guess the first thing I need to do is learn the correct process to import my existing photo events from iPhoto. When I conducted the import operation, I imported by selecting my individual events from iPhoto browser.  Is my problem the result of incorrectly importing from iPhoto?  Where can I find the appropriate import steps into Aperture from iPhoto?
Several of you recommended that I may need to execute a repair against my iPhoto library.  How do I run the repairs on the iPhoto library?
I am confused as to why every single photo is duplicated with one version being the original and the other as an edited version.  I am confused since I have not attempted to edit all of my photos within iPhoto.  Granted I have edited a few photos, but no way every single one.  More than likely I am importing the photos incorrectly from iPhoto.  I may try to import from my photo cards rather than attempting to copy from iPhoto.  Perhaps iPhoto automatically sends two copies of the same photo to Aperture as a default???

  • I have the new macbook pro from late 2011. when i try plugging my cannon gl2 into the mac via firewire 800 it does not show up in iMovie as an option to import from. i even have gone into my settings on the camera and changed it to vcr.

I have the new MacBook Pro from late 2011. "the one before the new ritina display" i have a cannon gl2 video camera which is mini dv. when i plug it into my mac via firwire 800 it does not show up in the iMovie. i have set the settings on the camera to vcr mode and changed it to av->dv out. when i click on the import from camera on imovie it doesnt even show my camera in it. it just gives me the option to import video from my facetime camera. the camera is turned on the wires are connected i know for fact that its a firewire and not a usb. i know what they each look like. i bought the firewire cable and it was marked down cause it was an opened and used item. would it be possible that it could be deffected and if that is not the reason what other options do i have?

I would say that odds are high that you have a bad cable. Maybe that is why they returned it.
I would suggest trying a different firewire cable.
You can find Firewire cables inexpensively at monoprice.com. You need a 4 pin to 9 pin firewire cable.

    Other things to check:
Is your camera plugged in to wall power (not to batteries only). Must be hooked to an AC power source to import.

  • Camera RAW auto tone settings applied to jpegs

I posted this in the Windows Bridge forum, but a camera raw preference controls this so I am also posting here.
On jpeg files without any RAW setting applied, Bridge still applies RAW settings to the thumbnails and the preview are thus display incorrectly. Opening the file shows the jpeg as it should be, without RAW settings applied.
I have RAW preferences set to apply auto settings to RAW files without any current settings.
I have my RAW settings to open jpegs in RAW *only* when they already have settings. If I set this to disable jpeg support, then the RAW settings are not automatically applied to jpegs without existing settings. aka, Bridge redoes the thumbnails without the auto setting.
While it is correct to apply auto tone to RAW files without settings, jpeg files are already "developed/printed" and should not get additional auto develop settings automatically applied.
    My Bridge is 4.0.4.2
    Raw is 6.3

  • Automatically export to JPEG from RAW images

RAW images are preferred form of shooting for many photographers. And, Lightroom is great at managing and developing these images. However, we increasingly use/view these images outside Lightroom and away from the PC where we do most of the development. For example, I use a DLNA server which shows off my entire image collection to big screen television (which can act as a DLNA client). The same DLNA server is used to send images to our smartphones (my wife loves to show all kid pictures anywhere she - without having to carry the pictures on the phone).
Most other applications that use these images, do not work on RAW images and JPEG images must be exported manually from Lightroom. This becomes increasingly difficult to manage and keep track of while developing RAW images. How many RAW images need to be exported? How many images did I touch since the last time I exported them?
Currently, I am using the following process to manage this:
    1. I created a smartlist which contains images that are edited after "a particular date".
    2.  I select all images in this smartlist, and use Lightroom3's export  function to export them all as JPEG, to the same folder as original.
    3. Once the export is completed, I modify the smartlist to change the "particular date" to today's date.
I plan to repeat this procedure every so often (once a week or so).
It would be great if Lightroom had a feature such that it always keeps "JPEGs exported" for all RAW images (with the latest development settings of course). This could be a process that could occur in the background or at a user-specified time/event (e.g. when one closes Lightroom). User should be able to specify where the exported JPEG images should be put to and with what name (I prefer in the same folder as RAW but other users may have other preferences). User should be able to select if this is only done for RAW images or also for JPEG and other formats (in which case, should the exported image override the original or not). The exported images should be (optionally) automatically included in the Lightroom catalogue and stacked with the original RAW image.
Mainly, the entire process should be completely transparent to the user. A collection of JPEG images - corresponding to the latest development settings for the RAW images - should be always available.
    Osho

I've heard many others raising the issue of an auto-jpeg feature - kinda like auto-write xmp, except auto-write jpeg.
I agree this would be nice, obviously some sort of "stability" check would be needed so it isnt constantly writing jpegs as you edit. Lightroom employs a form of this already for the xmp - meaning it doesn't update xmp every brush stroke, but accumulates several strokes before updating, so its more efficient...
If you could define multiple jpegs to keep - with the raws, or a separate tree - even better. That would obsolete all the tree output plugins and publishers.
The publishing feature was intended to fill this need (albeit manual only), but it suffers from the inability to publish to original directory, and/or an external tree.
I'd like to see a manual mode too, that accompanies a new "Done for now" function - so when you say "Done for now", it saves xmp, jpeg(s), snapshot, and optionally locks the file so unapproved changes can no longer happen to it. Then if you could define multiple "done for now" presets that include initiating publish service and exports, then the work-flow becomes: 1.import, 2.edit, 3.done for now - and thats it (maybe repeat 2 + 3 in the future). i.e. no more manually initiating the exports, publish services, snapshots, saving of xmp, ..., and whatever else you do when you're done.
In the mean time, I may make some of this part of an up-n-coming "Sidekick" app + plugin combo when I get to it.
Presently, I dont use publishing services, and I have ExportManager to consolidate exports (which includes TreeSync), so my workflow is: 1.import, 2.edit, 3.done for now (save xmp+snapshot, and lock via ChangeManager), 4. initiate consolidated exports...

  • Aspect ratio problem with AVCHD in iMovie 08

I am importing footage from a Panasonic HDC-SD9 into iMovie 08. the footage gets in there fine and looks great EXCEPT that the footage (all shot in 16:9) is squashed a little bit. in the preview clips below, it looks fine, but in the player above (and if I export it as a Quicktime file) it is squashed slightly. there are black bars above and below the footage, and (I'm guessing) were the video stretched to fill the entire area, eliminating the black bars, it would be the correct aspect ratio. I've tried importing footage form the camera supposedly shot in 4:3, and the same thing happens.
I know that I can simply do a quick edit in imovie, export it, import it into final cut pro, and stretch it back. however, I'm worried about losing quality, and more importantly, I don't know the exact ratio, since I can't even figure out what imovie is doing to the video to make it squashed, let alone in what manner.
the footage from the HDC-SD9 is AVCHD, and I understand there is something about square pixels vs. rectangular, but I don't know much about it. I have tried every iteration of imovie's limited aspect ratio settings, and I can't get it to work. I know it's meant to work well with AVCHD, so I'm assuming I'm missing something fundamental and simple. (some box to check to let imovie know I'm importing AVCHD?) it's maddening to see the footage correctly in the thumbnails, but squashed for (seemingly) no reason in the playback. can you help me out? otherwise I am going to film myself holding something that is a perfect square, then import it to imovie, then export to quicktime, then import the quicktime file into finalcut, then stretch it til the rectangle becomes a perfect square, and write down the settings for the future. seems ridiculously complicated, especially for the mac world.
I love imovie 08 (seriously, some of the new toys are just so amazing, and no render time at all!), and I love this camera. please tell me they can get along!

I think I'm having a problem similar to this. I'm using a Sharp MiniDV camera, and shooting in 16:9. When I used to import to other versions of iMovie it worked fine, but w/ iMovie 08 it is squashing and stretching the incoming video to more like 20:9 (I have no idea what the actual ratio is, this is just a guess). I tried changing import to PAL 25fps, but that didn't do any thing. Any other suggestions?

  • Please help with highest quality export settings...

I have searched the forum and web for hours (no joke!) and I am still trying to figure out what are the best video settings to give me the highest HD quality video in daylight. I am using a Canon HF200 and the latest updated version of FCE. My problem is that I am unable to produce an HD quality video at 1920 x 1080 Full HD without being "jagged". I have two questions; what do you suggest to be the best FCE import and export settings to produce the best HD video, and what settings do you have your HF200 set to (for normal daylight conditions), to produce the best HD video file? The file will be played directly thru my computer to a plasma HDTV.
I have tried several settings, but using anything above 1280x720 16:9, makes the video "jagged". Again, I don't care about the size of the file or how long it takes, I just want the best. Is there something I am missing?
My FCP settings are the following:
I log and transfer the video from the camera into FCP (on a black MacBook; 2.16 GHz with 4 GB RAM) using the AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec 1920 x 1080i source. I then export the video using the following:
    Export using "Quicktime Conversion".
    Quicktime options video settings are:
    Frame Rate set to "Current"
Key Frames set to every "24" frames
Compressor quality: "best" (Encoding set to "best quality")
    Data Rate set to "automatic"
    Quicktime options video size are:
"HD 1280 x 720 16:9" (anything higher produces the jags!)
Deinterlace source video is NOT checked
My Canon HF 200 settings are the following:
    - P mode
    - FXP (17 Mbps)
    - 60i framerate
all others are set to the normal default
I have read some reports saying the above is good and others suggesting changing FXP to MXP (24 Mbps) and/or the framerate from 60i to PF30. I don't care about the size of the file, I just want the highest quality HD file.
Any suggestions for the best FCE settings and/or HF200 settings would be very much appreciated!
    Thanks for your help,
    Evan

    Thanks again for the feedback
Let me try my best to answer the above (I'm new at all this and I appreciate you guys taking the time to try and help me out).
First off, I tried rendering and that did not help.
Here is my sequence. I am not going into FCE from the camera directly. I have archived the video file from the camera using iMovie (as well as just making an exact copy of the camera files; they both appear to me to be the exact same, both can be logged and transferred into FCE, and both files give me a jagged FCE result).
Once I log and transfer the file(s), I then take the clip and add it to a sequence file (rendering or not rendering the clip(s) at this point does not make a difference), and then click/highlight the sequence file in the browser and export it.
As for "editing the video in a 1920x1080i60 sequence", I think I am. I am not doing any editing to the clip. It is logged and transferred using the AVCHD Apple Intermediate Codec 1920 x 1080i and then exported using either as a Quicktime Movie or Quicktime Conversion (set for 1920 x 1080 using H.264 compression; both ways still result in a jagged video).
That's about it...log and transfer, add clip to sequence, and then export sequence...
I hope this answers the above, but if not, I apologize; I'm still learning!
Also, if I use iMovie, with similar export (share) settings, I get a non-jagged video (I have tried with deinterlacing and not deinterlacing, and both video results are fine)
    Thanks again,
    Evan
