  • Jakarta POI and Java Excel API

    I recently downloaded both these as I'm trying to create an application that reads information from an excel file. However, the problem I am having is that I just don't know where to start. When I download the files and unzip them, I haven't a clue where to put the files or how to call them from my java files. I've read the help files on both the websites but am no clearer on what to do. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Download an IDE like Eclipse or JBuilder. Set-up the POI or JExcel JAR files on your new project's class path. Import the relevant packages into the class that will use them. Start typing, autocomplete will help give you a list of classes and methods that are available.
    If the above is confusing, start over. Go back and re-read how to import external JAR's onto a classpath. Try to use another third-party API to get the hang of it. Then, do it with POI. Follow the examples, even copy-paste a class into your own source tree and try to compile. Gradually, build up your expertise. Now, go to the Javadocs. You should have the ability to use any class or method published in the API.

  • Java Reflection API problem... Please HELP!

    Hi,
    I'm writing a Client-Server program set where the Server class receives a Java file, along with some parameters, from the Client class/computer.
    The Server class then invokes a certain method from the Java file it received (depending on the parameters received).
    My Server program keeps giving me a ClassNotFoundException, and I'm going crazy.. I've been trying to fix it for a long time now... but with no avail.
    Here's the Server program.. but I doubt you need to read it all. Please just scroll down to "// The line below is what give me problems:".
    package remoterun;
    import java.net.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.lang.reflect.*;
    * <p>Copyright: Copyright ms2000 (c) 2005</p>
    public class Server2 {
        public static void main(String args[]) throws Exception {
            int numParameters;
            int port = 6789;
            boolean isThere = false;
            String className, methodName;
            Object[] parameters;
            ServerSocket welcomeSocket = new ServerSocket(port);
            for (; ; ) {
                 * Create a new socket, called connectionSocket, when some client knocks
                 * on welcomeSocket. This socket has the same port number. TCP then
                 * establishes a direct virtual pipe between the client socket and
                 * connectionSocket at the server so the client and server can send bytes
                 * to each other over it.
                Socket connectionSocket = welcomeSocket.accept();
                // Get number of parameters
                DataInputStream in = new DataInputStream(new BufferedInputStream(
                        connectionSocket.getInputStream()));
                numParameters = in.readInt();
    // Get the parameters for the method to be invoked.
                parameters = new Object[numParameters];
                ObjectInputStream objStream = new ObjectInputStream(
                        connectionSocket.getInputStream());
                for (int i = 0; i < numParameters; i++) {
                    parameters[i] = objStream.readObject();
                // read the class
                File program = (File) objStream.readObject();
                System.err.println(program); // It prints the program name correctly, e.g. Class2.java
    // Receiving some String parameters...
                            BufferedReader inFromClient = new BufferedReader(new
                        InputStreamReader(connectionSocket.getInputStream()));
                className = inFromClient.readLine();
                methodName = inFromClient.readLine();
                // The line below is what give me problems:
                Class classDefinition = Class.forName("remoterun." + className + ".java");
                Object object = classDefinition.newInstance();
                Method[] theMethods = classDefinition.getMethods();
                for (int i = 0; (i < theMethods.length) && (!isThere); i++) {
                    if (theMethods.getName().equals(methodName)) {
    isThere = true;
    theMethods[i].invoke(object, parameters);
    The Client code just sends the stuff to the Server, and it works fine. The code is below if it may help:
    package remoterun;
    import java.net.*;
    import java.io.*;
    public class Client2 {
        public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception {
            int result;
            int port = 6789;
            int num1 = 5;
            int num2 = 6;
            int numParameters = 3;
            String hostIP = "127.0.0.1";
            String className = "Class2";
            String methodName = "add";
            Object[] parameters;
            Socket clientSocket = new Socket(InetAddress.getByName(hostIP),
                                             port);
            // Send numParameters, className, methodName
            DataOutputStream out = new DataOutputStream(new BufferedOutputStream(
                    clientSocket.getOutputStream()));
            out.writeInt(numParameters);
            out.flush();
            Integer num3 = new Integer(num1);
            Integer num4 = new Integer(num2);
            parameters = new Object[] {num3, num4, InetAddress.getLocalHost()};
            File program = new File((className + ".java"));
            ObjectOutputStream output = new ObjectOutputStream(clientSocket.
                    getOutputStream());
            for (int i = 0; i < numParameters; i++) {
                output.writeObject(parameters);
    output.writeObject(program);
    output.flush();
    DataOutputStream outToServer = new DataOutputStream(clientSocket.
    getOutputStream());
    outToServer.writeBytes(className + '\n');
    outToServer.writeBytes(methodName + '\n');
    outToServer.flush();
    clientSocket.close();
    The error I get from the Server class is:

    (I also get a dialog box saying sthg like, "A fatal exception occured.. will exit now".)
    It's really odd, becuase there were rare times when it works although I don't change the program...
    I tried changing the problem line to stuff like:
                Class classDefinition = Class.forName(className + ".java");or
       Class classDefinition = Class.forName(className);but with no use. Same error. Can someone please pinpoint the problem?
    I'm sure the program does get to the Server, because it can print out the file name.
    PS: Sometimes it works when I use the same PC as the client/server, sometimes it doesn't.... Help :-(
    I'd appreciate some assistance in this.
    Thank you.

    What's this dot-java stuff? Are you sending a source file? If so, that isn't going to work. You need to compile the file and send the dot-class file.
    I'll try that. However, can I make the Client program complie the .java file? For example. something like Class2.compile()? Is this feature available, or do I have to open Class2.java and compile it from there?
    And in the server you need to either store that somewhere in the server's classpath....
    Isn't it automatically stored there? If not, how do I make it stored in the same file as the Server source file (I assume that's what you mean by classpath)?
    Thanks for your help... !!!

  • Problem in Accessing serial port using java comm Api

    I have installed java comm Api in my pc.
    i have gone through the instalation instruction which comes on this package.
    I have done the instalation like this
    Copy win32com.dll to my <JDK>\bin directory.
    Copy comm.jar to my <JDK>\lib directory.
    Copy javax.comm.properties to my <JDK>\lib directory.
    and restart the system.
    But when i run the BlackBox , it is giving me message
    "serial port not found".
    Can any one tell me , what is the exact problem ?

    I'm not sure what you mean by BlackBox, but I have used the COMM api extensively.
    The majority of problems is that the api cannot see the serial port (which is what you are describing) and this is caused by incorrect placing of the javax.comm.properties file.
    As well as <JDK>\lib, try putting it into <JRE>\lib as well. That has often solved problems on my setup.

  • Problem in sending messages using java mail api

    Hi All,
    I have a problem in sending messages via java mail api.
    MimeMessage message = new MimeMessage(session);
    String bodyContent = "ñSunJava";
    message.setText (bodyContent,"utf-8");using the above code its not possible for me to send the attachment. if i am using the below code means special characters like ñ gets removed or changed into some other characters.
    MimeBodyPart messagePart = new MimeBodyPart();
                messagePart.setText(bodyText);
                // Set the email attachment file
                MimeBodyPart attachmentPart = new MimeBodyPart();
                FileDataSource fileDataSource = new FileDataSource("C:/sunjava.txt") {
                    public String getContentType() {
                        return "application/octet-stream";
                attachmentPart.setDataHandler(new DataHandler(fileDataSource));
                attachmentPart.setFileName(filename);
                Multipart multipart = new MimeMultipart();
                multipart.addBodyPart(messagePart);
                multipart.addBodyPart(attachmentPart);
                message.setContent(multipart);
                Transport.send(message);is there any way to send the file attachment with the body message without using MultiPart java class.

    Taken pretty much straight out of the Javamail examples the following works for me (mail read using Thunderbird)        // Define message
            Message message = new MimeMessage(session);
            message.setFrom(new InternetAddress(from));
            // Set the 'to' address
            for (int i = 0; i < to.length; i++)
                message.addRecipient(Message.RecipientType.TO, new InternetAddress(to));
    // Set the 'cc' address
    for (int i = 0; i < cc.length; i++)
    message.addRecipient(Message.RecipientType.CC, new InternetAddress(cc[i]));
    // Set the 'bcc' address
    for (int i = 0; i < bcc.length; i++)
    message.addRecipient(Message.RecipientType.BCC, new InternetAddress(bcc[i]));
    message.setSubject("JavaMail With Attachment");
    // Create the message part
    BodyPart messageBodyPart = new MimeBodyPart();
    // Fill the message
    messageBodyPart.setText("Here's the file ñSunJava");
    // Create a Multipart
    Multipart multipart = new MimeMultipart();
    // Add part one
    multipart.addBodyPart(messageBodyPart);
    // Part two is attachment
    for (int count = 0; count < 5; count++)
    String filename = "hello" + count + ".txt";
    String fileContent = " ñSunJava - Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the party " + count + " \n";
    // Create another body part
    BodyPart attachementBodyPart = new MimeBodyPart();
    // Get the attachment
    DataSource source = new StringDataSource(fileContent, filename);
    // Set the data handler to this attachment
    attachementBodyPart.setDataHandler(new DataHandler(source));
    // Set the filename
    attachementBodyPart.setFileName(filename);
    // Add this part
    multipart.addBodyPart(attachementBodyPart);
    // Put parts in message
    message.setContent(multipart);
    // Send the message

    I am able to retrieve the latest mails and save it in a folder in my system.
    The problem is whenever i run the program eventhough the most recently received mail in inbox is retrieved and saved,again it is retrieving the same one and saving it in the same folder(not repeating).
    I tried to check the newmessages in the inbox using the folder.hasNewMessage() method in java mail api,but the method is returning false only regardless new mail is there in inbox or not.
    I want to read the unread messages only.Dont want to retrieve the already read mails.
    I got the mail retrieving code from the below site.(sorry not posting the code because it is so long and having 4 classes)

    hi parvathi
    i think your mail program is receving mails using imap
    the imap is only receve the mail from server but the pop is deleting the mails after receving
    use the following sample code
    package com.sfrc.mail.pop;
    import javax.mail.*;
    import javax.mail.internet.*;
    import com.sun.mail.handlers.message_rfc822;
    import java.util.*;

  • Problems with Java Scripting API

    Hello Everyone!
    Guys, I need help with Java scripting API. A problem is that I cannot understand how can I operate Java Object's fields and methods from the script language. I have chosen embedded javascript to work with. And I can get the fields and methods of in-box java classes (such as ArrayList for example), but I cannot work with methods and fields from my own classes!
    Here is an example:
    public class ScriptingExample {
        class MyClass {
            int myfield = 5;
            int getInt() {return 7;}
        public void runExample() {
            ScriptEngineManager mgr = new ScriptEngineManager();
            List<ScriptEngineFactory> factories = mgr.getEngineFactories();
            ScriptEngineManager factory = new ScriptEngineManager();
            ScriptEngine engine = factory.getEngineByName("JavaScript");
            MyClass mc = new MyClass();
            try{
                engine.put("mc", mc);
                engine.eval("print(mc.myfield); print(mc.getInt())"); // or engine.eval("print(mc.myfield)");
            } catch (Exception e) {e.printStackTrace();}
    }  If I run the code with the commented part it prints "undefined" instead of "5".
    If I run the code as it is it prints error instead of "7":

    How can I fix it?

    Guys,
    please let me raise this topic because several new questions emerged.
    (1) How can I get all the variables created inside my engine?
    There are two kinds of variables: first kind is Java obejcts put inside the engine and second kind is the variables created in my script, such as 'var a = 4;'. How can I list all the variables of that two kinds?
    (2) Is there is a way to make 'import static' to the engine? I dont want to write MyClass.MyEnum.MyEnumItem every time. Also, I cannot put the whole enum into the engine with engine.put("MyEnum", MyEnum); I can put only enum items separately: engine.put("MyEnum", MyEnum.EnumItemA);. Thats why I ask about static import.
    (3) How can I cast engine variables back to java variables inside my java code?
    Here is my example:
    package mypackage;
    import java.util.ArrayList;
    import java.util.List;
    import javax.script.ScriptEngine;
    import javax.script.ScriptEngineFactory;
    import javax.script.ScriptEngineManager;
    public class Main
         public static void main(String[] args) throws Exception
              ScriptEngineManager mgr = new ScriptEngineManager();
              List<ScriptEngineFactory> factories = mgr.getEngineFactories();
              ScriptEngineManager factory = new ScriptEngineManager();
              ScriptEngine engine = factory.getEngineByName("JavaScript");
              ArrayList<Double> myList = new ArrayList<Double>();
              myList.add(5.0);
              engine.put("MyList", myList);
              engine.eval("MyVar = MyList.get(0);");
              System.out.println((Double)engine.get("MyVar"));
    }The result is:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ClassCastException: sun.org.mozilla.javascript.internal.NativeJavaObject cannot be cast to java.lang.Double
    +     at mypackage.Main.main(Main.java:28)+
    Is it possible to retrieve my Double java object from the engine?

    You can use InitialContext ic = new InitialContext() only if you are using a startup class, servlet or a JSP i.e
    server side code.
    If you are using a java client you need to use Context ic = getInitialContext();
    Try this code
    import java.util.*;
    import javax.activation.*;
    import javax.mail.*;
    import javax.mail.internet.*;
    import javax.naming.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.net.InetAddress;
    import java.util.Properties;
    import java.util.Date;
    public class MailTo {
    public static void main(String args[])
    try {
    Properties h = new Properties();
    h.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY,"weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactory");
    h.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "t3://localhost:7001");
    Context ic = new InitialContext(h);
    Session session = (Session) ic.lookup("testSession");
    Properties props = new Properties();
    props.put("mail.transport.protocol", "smtp");
    props.put("mail.smtp.host", "XX.XX.XX.XX");
    props.put("mail.from", "[email protected]");
    Session session2 = session.getInstance(props);
    Message msg = new MimeMessage(session2);
    msg.setFrom();
    msg.setRecipients(Message.RecipientType.TO,InternetAddress.parse("[email protected]",false));
    msg.setSubject("Test Message");
    msg.setSentDate(new Date());
    MimeBodyPart mbp = new MimeBodyPart();
    mbp.setText("This is a mail sent to you using JAVA Mail API and Weblogic Server");
    Multipart mp = new MimeMultipart();
    mp.addBodyPart(mbp);
    msg.setContent(mp);
    Transport.send(msg);
    catch(Exception e)
    e.printStackTrace();
    }//end of main

    We have shipped a javamail example in the samples\server\src\examples\javamail folder.

  • Problem with Java Communication API

    hi
    I installed the Java Communication API on win32 platform (as per the guidelines)
    Now when I try to run the sample program 'Blackbox' for the serial port, I get an error (in fact an exception is generated inside main function in BlackBox.class file)
    I tried the SimpleRead.java example but that too generated the same exception
    Can anybody help me out.... I am a novice with Java Comm API

    I tried running the sample BlackBox program provided for serial port and now it says
    No Serial Ports Found!
    I verified that both comm.jar and javax.comm.properties are in the <JDK>\lib directory.
    Actually, I am using netBeans IDE 1.4 and I used the C:\J2SDK folder installed with netBeans for the Java Communicaion API
    plz help.

  • Java Attach API - Installing Agents on Applets - Problem?

    When I attempt to install an agent on a signed applet and try to start a thread I get a SecurityException, any solutions?

    Hello,
    I suspect you got zero replies because:
    1) A vast majority of readers here don't know what the Attach APi is. I didn't either, until I took the endeavour to search what it was (and I still know very little about this now)
    The form of your post is guilty here: you didn't take into account that your question was quite specific on a quite specific point of the Java ecosystem, and you haven't provided references for people who might want to help on this little-known area.
    For those interested:
    http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/realtime/v2r0/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.rt.doc.20/user/attachapi.html
    http://blogs.oracle.com/sundararajan/entry/using_mustang_s_attach_api
    2) As far as I could tell after traversing the first couple of links returned by a quick search, the (Java) Attach API is not a part of the JVM specifications, and is left to JVM implementors to provide; apparently Sun and IBM do provide one proprietary API each. Note that there is the
    Again the form of your post is questioned: exactly which VM/API are you using?
    3) Your posts gives little details about what you are doing, little detail about what you get (a SecurityException generally comes loaded with an informative message), and no detail at all about what you have tried so far to investigate this issue. This doesn't help making people want to dig.
