Jakarta POI and Java Excel API

I recently downloaded both these as I'm trying to create an application that reads information from an excel file. However, the problem I am having is that I just don't know where to start. When I download the files and unzip them, I haven't a clue where to put the files or how to call them from my java files. I've read the help files on both the websites but am no clearer on what to do. Any help would be much appreciated.

Download an IDE like Eclipse or JBuilder. Set-up the POI or JExcel JAR files on your new project's class path. Import the relevant packages into the class that will use them. Start typing, autocomplete will help give you a list of classes and methods that are available.
If the above is confusing, start over. Go back and re-read how to import external JAR's onto a classpath. Try to use another third-party API to get the hang of it. Then, do it with POI. Follow the examples, even copy-paste a class into your own source tree and try to compile. Gradually, build up your expertise. Now, go to the Javadocs. You should have the ability to use any class or method published in the API.

Jakarta POI Excel97-2000 (Excel 2003?)

Hi All
I need to read data from Excel 2003 spreadsheet using my java program.
I looked at Jakarta POI, and JDBC-ODBC bridge options.
POI says Excel97-2000
Creating system DSN does not show Excel 2003 options. It shows Excel97-2000, Excel 3.0 etc
My environment is Windows XP 2002.
Can I read Excel 2003 documents using POI?
If I deploy this program on a machine which has earlier versions of excel on it will it be able to read.
I just have plain text in excel spreadsheet.

Hard to answer this question definitively because it very much depends upon exactly what is in the file. If you have saved a complex, formatted document that makes extensive use of features that were introduced into Excel for version 2003 then you will face problems. If the file contains simply plain text, then you should be fine. Most of the API authors base their product on an earlier version of the BIFF8 format to ensure compatibility with as wide a range of Excel versions as possible. That is why they all mention that the API will handle files that are based upon a specific version of Excel. Hopefully, you will be fine distributing the application onto machines that run earlier versions of Excel.
By the way, have you also considered JExcel? It handles a few things differently to HSSF (POI) and you may prefer the way it approaches parsing an Excel spreadsheet file and exposing it's contents.

Jakarta poi and Jexcel

I want read an Excel sheet using Java. I had gone through net and found two Api's.
One is Jakarta's POI and another one is JExcel.
Iam totally confused, which one i need to implement and is there any performance difference b/w these two api's.
Also can any body tell me from which url i have to download these two s/w and how to install them.

DAO pattern and Java Persistence API

Hi
This is a question for anyone who might be familiar with the standard DAO design pattern and the Java Persistence API (JPA - part of EJB3). I'm new to this technology, so apologies for any terminology aberrations.
I am developing the overall architecture for an enterprise system. I intend to use the DAO pattern as the conceptual basis for all data access - this data will reside in a number of forms (e.g. RDBMS, flat file). In the specific case of the RDBMS, I intend to use JPA. My understanding of JPA is that it does/can support the DAO concept, but I'm struggling to get my head around how the two ideas (can be made to) relate to each other.
For example, the DAO pattern is all about how business objects, data access objects, data transfer objects, data sources, etc relate to each other; JPA is all about entities and persistence units/contexts relate to each other. Further, JPA uses ORM, which is not a DAO concept.
So, to summarise - can DAO and JPA work together and if so how?

Basically, I'm in the process of proposing an enterprise system architecture, which will use DAO as the primary persistence abstraction, and DAO + JPA in the particular case of persistence to a RDBMS. In doing so, I'd like to illustrate the various elements of the DAO pattern, a la the standard class diagram that relates BusinessObject / DataAccessObject / DataSource / TransferObject (http://java.sun.com/blueprints/corej2eepatterns/Patterns/DataAccessObject.html). With reference to this model, I know that you have a view on the concept of TransferObject (aka ValueObject?) - how would you depict the DAO pattern in its most generic form? Or is the concept of a generic DAO pattern compromised by the specific implementation that is used (in this case JPA)?

Jakarta Poi and Adf

I have searched through the forum and the Jakarta poi looks like a good option.
My question is, has anyone integrated jakarta poi with adf and deployed the app to the web application server.
I am using Jdeveloper 10.1.2.

Jre 1.4.2_12 + java excel api problem.

I got problem when i write a program to read chinese excel sheet with jre 1.4.2_12, chinese will encoding incorrect in java, but when I change jre version to jre 1.4.2_10 or jre 1.5.0 update 7 , everything s ok . any solution?

I am also seeing encoding problems with 1.4.2_12 and havent been able to find a solution. Did you find a solution to your problem? If so I'd appreciate it if you could post it.

Java SE and Java EE

I am a IT graduate and I still need some clarification on the relationship between Java SE and Java EE API. Does EE include SE?
For application development, I know I can use only SE without the EE, but can I use EE alone without SE?
Any good articles addressing my questions?

Java EE in fact extends java SE, its primarily aim is to simplify developing multitier enterprise applications (Java SE provides all the necessary basic libraries etc.)
Because Java EE is an extension of Java SE, you cant use EE without SE - without SE there is no EE.

Not able to recognize any video/audio devices using jmf and java soun

Here I am expecting some clarifications from you. Before that let you my environement.
My working environment :
Eclipse tool and added jmf jar to my project I did not do any thing more.
If any thing I need to do just let me know. My target platform is MAC & UBUNTU.
Please bare with my questions.
1) I am not able to recognize any video/audio devices using jmf and java sound APIs on My system.
( I checked with the app mentioned in the http://www.java-forums.org/new-java/11201-jmf-cannot-connect-device.html )
Do we need any administrives rights for our working PC.
What is the procedure/ setup I need to follow from a java application to enable particular audio/video device since I dont about end-user system setup right.
If possible send some sample code to recognize /r detect audio device ( voice input ). It should run on both MAC and UBUNTU.
2) I run the one sample audio recording application of this link (http://www.jsresources.org/examples/SimpleAudioRecorder.java.html) which is provided by YOU.
I got output audio file and able to hear voice on UBUNTU system but not able to hear voice on MAC system.
I heared that default line in ( audio setup of the sys) is wont take any voice data on MAC.Why I made this stmt means we are getting false when using isSupported methods of JAVA SOUND API.
( like for TragetdataLine ...i,e, all ports are getting false)
I have one sample audio recording app implemented by QUICKTIME API. In this case also he taking audio ftom device only using quicetime API.
With that we are able to record and hear audio ( voice input --> not line in , external device we added some thing like SSB...)
3) In case of Video capturing DataSource, Streams are implemented by PullBufferDataSource , PullBufferStream intefaces used.
In case of Audio capturing DataSource, Streams are implemented by PushBufferDataSource, PushBufferStream intefaces used.
Can you explain the reasons ? I gone through API but i am not clear.

How to use excel api in java?

I need to use excel api in Java to generate data in excel format. Can any one tell any of the use ful Excel api that we can down load from net? i have read about Apache's POi-hssf-Java api. But the jar i downloaaded from Apache site is not working ? Can anybody please send me the jar for taht Api ?

In fact i was not clear about whcih jar file to download from the apache site. i found one folder structure like this

-bin
-src
All these folders contained some zip files. i took the zip files and extracted them. And i set teh class path also . But when i tried to import in java programs ,these jar files are giving compilation errors

What you need is a subversion client (the repository is a subversion repository).
There are several easy to use clients available:

When you've got a client, you'll need to give it a repository URL from which to check out.

Java Persistence API and creation of databases

Hi All
I have designed a small address book application which uses a database to store the information. I have used the new Java Persistence API to take care of my transactions and querrys with the database. This works great for one set database which is generated the first time the application runs and is used all the time.
However I would like to make it so that the user can create a new address book (database) with a different name, I am not sure how I would do this using the Java Persistence API. I know the persistence.xml file must be placed in the META-INF directory of the source, so how would I be able manipulate the file or could I place the file somewhere else.

I am using the Derby database. I can create a database by passing the create command when I create the entity Manager like so:
Connection c = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:derby:AddressBook;create=true", "app", "app");My problem is that as I understand it the persistence.xml file must know the name of the database. Unless there is another way of setting this. The line in the persistence file I am referring to is:
<property name="toplink.jdbc.url" value="jdbc:derby:AddressBook"/>I wonder if I can progamatically set this value so that I have a default database in the persistence.xml and others can then create there own.

To prevent spammers using your system's mail transfer agent as a channel for spam most MTAs are set up to send message either from a recognised local address to a remote address, or from remote to local. "Unable to relay" generally means that your MTA doesn't recognise the machine that tried to send the e-mail as "local".
You probably need to make changes to the configuration of the MTA (Sendmail or whatever) that runs on the machine you've designated as mail host.

Java Communications API and Java SDK 1.4.2

I just installed the Java Communications API 2.0 on my Windows XP system, with JDK 1.4.2. As per the install instructions, I copied files from the zip into my /lib and /bin directories and set the classpath. However, when I attempt to compile any of the samples, the compiler displays a large number of errors. I know the API documentation only references JDK1.2 -- are there any special tricks to installing on newer JDKs, or will I need to acquire an older JDK to develop?

My path variable is still not being set! Here is the content of my autoexec.bat located on the root directory of C:\

As an aside, I noticed that when I perform a search of the my hard drive (c:\), I find two autoexec.bat files. One at the root, and the other in C:\Windows\Command\EBD.
I believe the instructions stated to modify the autoexec.bat at the root directory.
TIA for any assistance. This is really becoming a nusance and taking up quite a bit of my time trying to resolve this problem.

Stand Alone OC4J and Java's Comm API

I am using the Java Comm API alongwith a servlet. The code simply gets the required ports and displays it in a JSP page. The program is developed using Jdeveloper 9. It works fine with embedded OC4J but a blank jsp page is displayed when deployed in in standalone OC4j instance on the same machine. I have correctly copied the required wincom32.dll, java.comm.properites and comm.jar to the jre/bin, jre/lib and jre/lib/ext respectively. What could be wrong.

Try setting the OS PATH env variable to the directory where the .DLL is located before you launch the container. Or else put the .DLL in a directory which is in the existing path.
