  • Trying to understand JRE & MS JVM better

    Hello,
Before I get to my question I need to give some background. Sorry for such a lengthy post.
An issue recently came up that made me realize I don't really understand the whole relationship between JRE, the MS JVM and Internet Explorer.
    Here's the scenario:
    - One of our internal sites has two applets that were written years ago with Java 1.2.
    - Users are able to see those applets without having the Sun JRE installed. I assumed that meant they're using the MS JVM
    - While moving to a new IDE we had to "upgrade" the applets to run on Java 1.4.2.09.
    - The users that didn't have the Sun JRE can no longer see the applet. All they get is a grey box
    - Users who have Sun JRE installed can see applet but ONLY if they have changed the options in IE to use the Sun JVM
So far so good. However, while researching this I found some users with many versions of the Sun JRE installed.
That got me thinking (here come the questions):
    1) If someone has the Sun JRE installed but doesn't have any browsers selected on the Browsers tab, is it being used for ANYTHING?
    2) If someone has many versions of the JRE installed, how can I tell which if any of them is actually being used?
    Thanks much for any replies.
    David.

    1. one of the jvms will be used, sun jvm or ms jvm;
    2. The latest version will be selected for you automatically.

  • Jre or jvm

    Hello all,
If i download a software made of applet, to run it do i need jvm to be installed in my system or only jre is enough.whatever may be the answer please explain me why?Its a confusion i have about applet.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Soumya

jre is a combination of jvm and few more runtime libraries.JVM works at the compiling level and produces bytecode of your program whereas jre comes into action at runtime converting your bytecodes to machine language...jre and jdk comes with jvm...so only need to install jre for your problem...

  • JRE vs. JVM et al

what is the diff. b/w JRE and JVM.
Can we have more than two access specifiers for a class ?
I would like to thank in advance for the appropriate reply.

    JRE - Java Runtime Environment
    JVM - Java Virtual Machine
JRE is the package you need to set up a fully qualified Java runtime environment including all core classes and APIs, etc.
JVM is the environment any Java application, applet, servlet runs in. The JVM interpretes Java bytecode and executes it on whatever physical hardware it is created for.
Can we have more than two access specifiers for a class ?
Do you mean constructors? you can have any number of those
or do you mean methods? you can have more than one of these with the same name too

  • Differences between jdk and jre

can anybody explain the differences between jdk and jvm. and relation between jdk, jre and jvm.
    thanks

    Hi,
JDK- Java Development Kit contains compiler and other appliction development tools. with this tool you can compile as well as run your application
JRE-Java runtime Environment where Java applications are exceuted .You can only run your application here but you cant develop and compile.
JVM-Java Virtual Machine Its interpretor which interprets and then executes you coded after it is compile ( to byte code) by Java Compiler.

There's something different with JRE since update 23. I can install until update 22 just fine, but update 23 and 24 just does not install. I always install with offline installer. I have the error from event manager

Reviewing the preceding posts, I saw the suggestion to remove a java folder in c:"Program Files ..."
Imagine my surprise to discover that there was such a folder on my system after my uninstalls of java using Revo Uninstaller.
There were also java executables in the windows, System32, SysWOW64 subfolders.
After I again uninstalled the jdk 64 bit, I deleted all folders that seemed to contain java
When I reinstalled jdk 64 update 24 to c:\s\java, I was again not asked where to install the jre.
Inspecting the folder tree at c:\s\java I can see c:\s\java\jre but no folder c:\s\java\jre6
However, after this install I am able to execute the java command without seeing an error.
I don't think I'm fully functional yet because an attempt to start eclipse 3.6 (Helios) gives an immediate error windows "Failed to load the JNI shared library "c:\s\java\bin\..\jre\bin\server\jvm.dll"
Since the file c:\s\jre\server\jvm.dll does exist, I'll try re-installing eclipse.

  • JRE Install hangs Windows XP Pro!

    Sorry for being so lame.
It is the first time I'm trying to get myself started to deal with Java.
From the first approach it doesn't seem to be friendly as I was unable to even install the thing.
I'm running jre-1_5_0_06-windows-i586-p.exe and I'm ending with totaly hung Windows. It is totaly and deadly stopped. No mouse, no keyboard, no any signs of life at all.
I thought I might be doing it not in proper order, so I tried to install this jdk-1_5_0_06-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe. It seems to be installed with no problem eve though I don't see any use of it without having JRE or JVM running.
I also noticed that disclaimer note (or whatever it was) of JRE had a scrollbar at the right side. I tried to read it by scrolling it and it was just repeating the last line of text which I had already seen before scrolling.
Sorry again for being so lame, but could anyone be so kind and tell me where is that magical jawa-setup-kit to start from and have NO Windows XP hung ?

    Woohoo!
I've found the solution for blanc white screens.
But first I needed to get rid of broken JVM I had installed before. To do this I simply deleted all relevant files from my harddrive and voila! I was able to start everything again.
I disabled all hardware acceleration on my graphics card (nVidia 6800GS). It helped.
This time I installed NetBeans+JDK bundle stright away, without trying to understand the difference between SDK, JDK and "Application Server".
At least I could SEE something.
Oh yes! I saw it! It looks almost exactly as MS Visual Studio. The only disappointing thing was having NO html preview. But the good thing was that I was able to RUN Web-oriented "Hello World!"
    The story doesn't end here.
I have another tool to try "Sun Java Studio Creator". According to my expectations this one should show me the preview or some kind of Visual Design mode for html editing.
Just guess what have I done first.
Bingo! I tried to close NetBeans.
    Guess what happened...
Bingo! It HUNG MY WINDOWS AGAIN!
"Never Giveup" is one of my principles which never let me down.
So I rebooted my computer again and started installation of magical "Sun Java Studio Creator". It was going well and for my pleasure it let me have a cigarette instead of asking me a lot stupid questions. It was the goood side of it. But there was the dark side as well. Once the progress indicator reached "100%" guess what...
    IT HUNG MY WINDOWS AGAIN!
It is very good to have good principles, but I'm getting tired as it's getting late. It is almost midnight and my Java-tutorial is doing its best to turn this night into the real nightmare.
So far I'm having my computer restarted again and I've found where the magical "Sun Java Studio Creator" was hiding from me. I said hiding because I could not see anything in Start Menu. I found it and I ran it.
It worked! It has a really nice face with nice looking html-preview. I like it!
    Guess what.
Yeah! The thing doesn't really like me. I tried to run almost empty Web-project with only "Hello world!" typed in very first form. What could be the simplier task for mega-super-powerful-design-tool ?!
It failed to start Application Server and sent mr to read the log.
I have a couple of logs on my backyard, but I definetely have no idea which one to read. I also have no idea what is Application Server and where is its log. Was it that hard to say where to look for one?
Any way. This thing is really making me angry. So I'm downloading "Application Server" and trying to set it up individually, presuming it could not run because my last installation process ended with DEAD WINDOWS.
    Guess what happened this time...
Of course! You wouldn't fail to read my mind this time!
Of course it HUNG MY WIDOWS AGAIN!
What else should I turn off on my PC to be able to install whole Magical-JAVA-megapackage ?
May be I should remove my graphic card at all?
What about HDD, RAM and CPU?
    I don't know.
What I do know that this night my dreams will be kind of nightmare with JAVA-bucconeers chasing me to HANG UP MY WINDOWS again and again.
    PLEASE HELP ME!
PLEASE HURRY UP BEFORE IT STUCKED MY PC COMPLETELY!

  • JVM Basics

    I am confused about JVM.
    My questions are :
    Is 1 JRE = 1 JVM ?
Is every invocation of a java program start a separate jvm e.g. 2 instances of notepad show notepad.exe twice in task manager ?
If I start 2 java programs from command line simultaneously
    e.g. java cls1 and java cls2
Does it mean there are 2 JVMs running or are both programs running in a single jvm ?
How do I run 2 separate JVMs with the same JRE version on a single box ?
Where can I find more info ?
Whats do I have to d

    Well
JVM is a specification which every JRE has to follow .
The question about two command prompt window means you are not having two jvm rather you are having two JRE's.Please correct me if i am wrong.
Infact JVM is a virtual concept .

  • RoboHelp 9/10 Java Error Trying to Compile AIR Help Skin

I'm trying to save a custom skin for a RoboHelp 9 project on a Windows 7 64-bit PC using AIR Browser Based Help. When I try to save the skin, or compile it into a SWF, I get the following error:
    Error loading: C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_09\jre\bin\jvm.dll
The dll is located at that path. I tried running RoboHelp as Administrator. I tried editing a new skin with a new clean project and also with a downloaded trial of RoboHelp 10, and I got the same results. Has anyone seen this, or can anyone think of a fix?

    Hello hypericon_0090001,
Have you found any fix for this, as I am having the same problem.

  • Sample JAVA Mobile Server Publish code, and technical questions

Dear Oracle technical representative, or user:
I need to programmatically create, and remove publications using the pure JAVA classes of Consolidator, ConsolidatorManager, and ResourceManager for the Mobile Server in OracleLite 9i Release 5.0.1. On the creation side I have managed to get the example found in the directory OraLite501\Mobile\Server\Sample\Sample11 functioning using my installation parameters. I had a very difficult time of it because (1) the sample11 code fails to open an jdbc connection to the Mobile Server Repository Schema with the function Consolidator.OpenConnection, and (2) the ResourceManager function openConnection will not work unless the Webtogo.ora file is in the current working directory. The ConsolidatorManager function OpenConnection may also not work unless the Webtogo.ora file is in the current working directory, but I did test the hypothesis. Both of these problems need to be addressed in the sample11 code, and documentation to save other software developers from wasting hours of their valuable time. See line 223, 386, and 448 in the Publish.Java code that follows this problem description.
With the above two problems resolved, I can now programmatically create publications, but no hints on how to programmatically remove a publication exist in the documentation. The application I am developing will require the dynamic creation, and removal of publications. Also, when developing applications the complete removal of a publication is absolutely necessary when you have botched a publication. Thus my first question is What sequence of ResourceManager, and ConsolidatorManager function calls will completely remove a Publication?.
I also have two issues remaining with the code that I have so far developed. These issues will most likely be resolved, when I obtain instructions on how to completely remove a publication, and associated users. But, perhaps not. Referencing the Publish.java file that follows this problem description,
         1. The ResourceManager function dropUser does not drop a user. See my comments, and code beginning at line 277 in Publish.java. Do I need to de-instantiate all subscriptions, and unsubscribe all subscription users before calling this function.? I think, I tried the de-instantiate, unsubscribe sequence without success, but in the confusion I may not have made the try.
         2. How do I get rid of an index created with the ConsolidatorManager function DropPublicationItemIndex?. My comments on this problem begin at line 522 in Publish.java. For some reason the DropPublicationItemIndex function call made below line 448 does not work. What function calls are required prior to calling the DropPublicationItemIndex function?
Throughout the Publish.java code, I have made comments about some of the problems that I have had in getting the sample11 code working for my installation parameters. I think these comments should help the programmers maintaining the ResourceManager, and ConsolidatorManager code improve the stability of the programs. Please pass these comments, and attached files to the appropriate individuals,
if you are in a position to do so.
The other files that follow the Publish.java code are
         1. Compile.bat - Compiles Publish.java using j2sdk1.4.0.
         2. Run.bat - Executes Publish using \ j2sdk1.4.0\jre\server\jvm.dll.
         3. Webtogo.ora
         4. tnsnames.ora for the Mobile Server.
         5. tnsnames.ora for the Database.
Feel free to access my server if you need to do so in resolving my problems. The parameters you will need to gain access can be found at the top of Publish.java, and in the included *.ora files.

    Thanks,
    Thomas G. Matney

  • Install jdev1013 error

    Hi,
I unzipped the jdevstudio1013.zip and ran jdevW.exe. The error is :
Unable to create an instance of Java Virtual Machine located at path: ..\..\jdk\jre\client\jvm.dll.
    I appreciate for any help.
    Jane

Did you install into a directory with a space in its name - if you did unzip into another directory.
Also make sure that you have unzipped keeping all the sub directories structure.
    Run [jdev-root]\jdev\bin\jdev.exe
And also if you downloaded the zip that doesn't contain the JDK make sure you have the right JDK 5.0.5 set up according to the JDeveloper install guide.

  • 11g preview 4 doesn't recognise JDK

Just downloaded jdevloperbase1111 without JDK, and tried to use it with Java 1.6 update 6. I am prompted to specify the jdk location, but when I do, and click on OK, I get and "Unable to find a Java Virtual Machine" dialog and the following the the console window.
WARNING: Could not find jvm.cfg! in 'D:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_06\jre\lib\jvm.cfg'
WARNING: Cannot find default VM "client" at D:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_06
ERROR: Cannot find VM at: D:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_06
    Aborting!
    Same problem with SQLDeveloper 1.5.1
    jdk.cfg seems to be in 'D:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_06\jre\lib\amd64'
Windows XP Professional SP2 64 bit.
    java version "1.6.0_06"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_06-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 10.0-b22, mixed mode)
I see from the release notes the jdev doesn't support Java 6. I'll try again with 1.5, but since the framework is also used in sqldeveloper and they supposedly support Java 6, it is something that needs sorting.

Your problem is much easier. Don't use a path with blanks in it. This is a known issue with JDev 11g TP and clearly documented in the installation guide which is available on the download site.

  • JDeveloper 10 (9.0.5.2) with Java 1.5

    Hi everyone,
I've tried to use Java 1.5 SDk in conjunction with JDeveloper 10g with no success. I always get the following error message:
    Error: initialization error: class file has wrong version 49.0, should be 45.3 or 46.0 or 47.0 or 48.0 on classpath C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0\jre\lib\rt.jar;C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0\jre\lib\i18n.jar;C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0\jre\lib\sunrsasign.jar;C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0\jre\lib\jsse.jar;C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0\jre\lib\jce.jar;C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.5.0\jre\lib\charsets.jar;C:\Program Files\dev\Workspaces\Testing\TestServlet\classes;C:\Program Files\dev\jdev9052\jdev\lib\jdev-rt.jar;C:\Program Files\dev\jdev9052\j2ee\home\oc4j.jar;C:\Program Files\dev\jdev9052\j2ee\home\lib\servlet.jar;C:\Program Files\dev\Workspaces\Lib\JEncrypt.jar;C:\Program Files\dev\Workspaces\Lib\crimson.jar;C:\lib\mysql-connector-java-3.0.10-stable-bin.jar
now, my guess is that the oracle compiler is of an older java version (1.4x), how do I point the thing to use a different compiler? I've got the user libraries set at my 1.5 sdk java.exe
    Thanks tons,
    Herman

well.. to run jdev on the 1.5.0 JVM, its relatively simple...
Go into the jdev.conf, and find the "commented out" variable that looks like this:
    # SetJavaHome is not required by default, except for the base install,
    # since the launcher will determine the JAVA_HOME. On Windows it looks
    # in ..\..\jdk, on UNIX it looks in the PATH by default.
    # SetJavaHome /usr/java/jdk1.5.0
I run on linux, so my path is forward slashes. On windows, you would point it to the C:\Program Files\Java\1.5.0 or wheerever you base Java path is. Now execute jdevw, and it should run on 1.5.0 also.
A dialog box WILL pop up, (it may be BEHIND the jdev splash screen.. so it might be hard to find), which tells you that jdev is not supported on 1.5.0, but I hit the little checkbox to never tell me again, and hit "ok".
Jdev will happily load and run. Its just that debugging on linux doen't work. (I haven't tried on windows yet.. maybe I should).
While you are in the jdev.conf, there is another thing that can help with speed (both 1.4.2 and 1.5.0)....
    # The Windows launcher will attempt to use client (hotspot) by default,
    # unless a VM is specified below with the following directive. On UNIX
    # we use whatever is listed first in the $(JAVA_HOME)/jre/lib/jvm.cfg file.
    SetJavaVM server
Setting this value from "hotspot" or "client" to "server" makes the JVM take a little bit more memory, and it takes a little bit longer to load INTO Jdev, but once in, EVERYTHING runs smoother.

  • VirtualMachine settings problem

    Hi,
My new O9i JD is working using JDK1.3, while the development environment is set to JDK1.4. The problem is that during project starting(the compilation is OK) the following command is executed by JD:
    javaw -ojvm ...
and the unsupported option "-ojvm" is printed in the error window. Indeed for "java" command in JDK1.4 only -client and -server are possible as VM definitions. I tried to change Project Settings to choose another VM, but it is only possible between:ojvm, minimal and vanilla. I even tried to set "client" in project file "*.jpr", but it didn't help.
How to fix that? I think that there is a some stupid mistake in config, but where?
    Could you help?
    Thanks a lot,
    Jack.

There is a bug in the InstallOJVM script with respect to the 1.4 version of the J2SE. In 1.4, the list of installed VMs is kept at <j2sehom>\jre\lib\i386\jvm.cfg; under 1.3, it was under <j2sehome>\jre\lib\jvm.cfg. When InstallOJVM runs, it tries to modify/create the file at the 1.3 location.
JDeveloper, when it is looking for installed VMs, checks the 1.3 location first, and then the 1.4 location. So it is finding the (bogus) file in the 1.3 location that was created by the InstallOJVM script. If you delete/rename this file, JDeveloper should then find the correct file, and display the correct choices.
