JSF and File I/O

Hi,
I have a scenario where i want to display the content of some files (50 KB - 1 MB) to the clients in a web based application.
But the problem is the application server and the data server (where file resides) are two different machines.
Can anyone suggest what's the best way to acheive this?
Note:
The files should be displayed on demand when the user requests a file.
They will be just displayed in the browser.
Thanks in advance,
James.

Those are local images on disk? In the OS just map/mount it as network attached device and use a servlet or phaselistener to read from the disk and send it as a bytearray to the response.getOutputStream().

  • [JSF 2.0] How to add a non-displayed comment in JSF xhtml files?

    Hello!
    I would like to know how to put a non-displayed comment in a JSF xhtml file.
    Currently, a *<!-- My comment -->* will be sent in the HTML output.
    I've tried also:
    *// My comment*
    *<%-- My comment --%>*
    and other ideas, but they are failing.
    On the web, I red an ugly solution, implying to add one parameter in each faces-config.xml files our project could have, and asking JSF not to parse some statements (if I remember well).
    Whatever, I am quite sure it was a solution for JSF 1.0 or 0.9...
    There must be a clean way to write a comment, but I just can't find it.
    How do I write a comment that is not displayed on HTML output, in a JSF xhtml file?
    Regards,
    Grunt.

    <context-param>
        <param-name>facelets.SKIP_COMMENTS</param-name>
        <param-value>true</param-value>
    </context-param>I'm not sure if that works under JSF 2. If not, you can always use <ui:remove/>.

  • Using JSF and tiles

    Hi Friends,
    I'm trying to combine JSF and tiles as follows:
    Template file:
    <f:subview id="content">
    <tiles:insert attribute="content" flush="false"/>
    </f:subview>
    content file:
    <tiles:insert definition="userSpecific">
    <tiles:put name="content" type="string" >
    <h:outputText value="aaaa"/>
    </tiles:put>
    </tiles:insert>
    I get the following error when loading the content file:
    2007-06-20 10:14:10,578 [http-8080-Processor23] ERROR org.apache.myfaces.shared_impl.taglib.UIComponentTagUtils - Component javax.faces.component.UIViewRoot is no ValueHolder, cannot set value.
    I tried putting the template content in a verbatim tag and then it works
    but the content page is not displayed in correct place in the template...
    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Are you dead set on using tiles? I can see tiles including JSF but JSF including tiles? Not sure if that will work.
    My suggestion is to use Trinidad. It has the concept of Regions which is very "tiles" like and you will be far more successful.

  • JSF and Character Sets (UTF-8)

    Hi all,
    This question might have been asked before, but I'm going to ask it anyway because I'm completely puzzled by how this works in JSF.
    Let's begin with the basics, I have an application running on an OC4J servlet container, and am using JSF 1.1 (MyFaces). The problems I am having with this setup, is that it seems that the character encodings I want the server/client to use are not coming across correctly. I'm trying to enforce the application to be UTF-8, but after the response is rendered to my client, I've magically been reverted to ISO-8859-1, which is the main character set for the netherlands. However, I'm building the application to support proper internationalization; which means I NEED to use UTF-8.
    I've executed the following steps to reach this goal:
    - All JSP files contain page directives, noting the character set:
    <%@ page pageEncoding="UTF-8" contentType="text/html; charset=UTF-8" %>I've checked the generated source that comes from the JSP's, it looks as expected.
    - I've created a servlet filter to set the character set directly on the request and response objects:
        public void doFilter(ServletRequest req, ServletResponse res, FilterChain chain) throws IOException, ServletException {
            // Set the characterencoding for the request and response streams.
            req.setCharacterEncoding("UTF-8");
            res.setContentType("text/html; charset=UTF-8");
            // Complete (continue) the processing chain.
            chain.doFilter(req, res);
        }I've debugged the code, and this works fine, except for where JSF comes in. If I use the above situation, without going through JSF, my pages come back UTF-8. When I go through JSF, my pages come back as ISO-8859-1. I'm baffled as to what is causing this. On several forums, writing a filter was proposed as the solution, however this doesn't do it for me.
    It looks like somewhere internally in JSF the character set is changed to ISO. I've been through the sources, and I've found several pieces of code that support that theory. I've seen portions of code where the character set for the response is set to that of the request. Which in my case coming from a dutch system, will be ISO.
    How can this be prevented? Can anyone give some good insight on the inner workings of JSF with regards to character sets in specific? Could this be a servlet container problem?
    Many thanks in advance for your assistance,
    Jarno

    Jarno,
    I've been investigating JSF and character encodings a bit this weekend. And I have to say it's more than a little confusing. But I may have a little insight as to what's going on here.
    I have a post here:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=725929&tstart=45
    where I have a number of open questions regarding JSF 1.2's intended handling of character encodings. Please feel free to comment, as you're clearly struggling with some of the same questions I have.
    In MyFaces JSF 1.1 and JSF-RI 1.2 the handling appears to be dependent on the raw Content-Type header. Looking at the MyFaces implementation here -
    http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/myfaces/legacy/tags/JSF_1_1_started/src/myfaces/org/apache/myfaces/application/jsp/JspViewHandlerImpl.java
    (which I'm not sure is the correct code, but it's the best I've found) it looks like the raw header Content-Type header is being parsed in handleCharacterEncoding. The resulting value (if not null) is used to set the request character encoding.
    The JSF-RI 1.2 code is similar - calculateCharacterEncoding(FacesContext) in ViewHandler appears to parse the raw header, as opposed to using the CharacterEncoding getter on ServletRequest. This is understandable, as this code should be able to handle PortletRequests as well as ServletRequests. And PortletRequests don't have set/getCharacterEncoding methods.
    My first thought is that calling setCharacterEncoding on the request in the filter may not update the raw Content-Type header. (I haven't checked if this is the case) If it doesn't, then the raw header may be getting reparsed and the request encoding getting reset in the ViewHandler. I'd suggest that you check the state of the Content-Type header before and after your call to req.setCharacterEncoding('UTF-8"). If the header charset value is unset or unchanged after this call, you may want to update it manually in your Filter.
    If that doesn't work, I'd suggest writing a simple ViewHandler which prints out the request's character encoding and the value of the Content-Type header to your logs before and after the calls to the underlying ViewHandler for each major method (i.e. renderView, etc.)
    Not sure if that's helpful, but it's my best advice based on the understanding I've reached to date. And I definitely agree - documentation on this point appears to be lacking. Good luck

    Peter

  • JSF : Reading files greater than 200MB

    Hi,
    I am using JSF with tomahawk in my application.
    From the jsp i am calling a POJO to read a file (in a zip file) based on a condition. I am reading the whole file and returning back the full file...obviously i hit a java.lang.OutofMemory exception.
    I want to do something like send back each line (or chunk) that i read from the file back to the calling page.
    Here is the code that I have
    JSP:
    <pre>
    <%
         out.print(readObject.readFromZipFile(strPathToZipFile, logFileName);
    %>
    </pre>Here is the mehod readFromZipFile from the readObject class:
    public String readFromZipFile(String zipFilePath, String filePath) {
         StringBuffer sbFile = new StringBuffer();
         byte data[] = new byte[blockSize];
         BufferedInputStream is = null;
         try {
              ZipFile zipfile = new ZipFile(archivePath);
              ZipEntry entry = (ZipEntry) zipfile.getEntry(filePath);
              is = new BufferedInputStream(zipfile.getInputStream(entry));
              while (bytesToRead > 0) {
                   data = null;
                   data = new byte[bytesToRead];
                     sbFile.append(new String(data));
              is.close();
         } catch(Exception e) {
              log.error(e);
         } finally {
              is = null;
              data = null;
         return sbFile.toString();
    }I am reading the file and sending the data back as a string. Is there a way i can send the data back in chunks to the JSP / JSF and flush the data so that i dont hit the out of memory exception?
    Any help is highly appreciated.

    Hi BalusC,
    I tried this big time...i am getting roasted !!!
    This is what i tried in the servlet
    //get the size of the file
    int iFile = file.size();
    //start reading file from 5000 bytes
    int iPart = 5000;
    //read the file in part increments of 1000 bytes
    //so that we dont read the entire file at one shot
    while(iPart < iFile){
    //read the file from the given (start bytes)
    //to the (start bytes + 1000)
    response.getWriter().append
              (readZipFile(strPath,file,iPart,iPart+1000));
    //increment iPart to read the next 1000 bytes , next time around
    iPart = iPart + 1000;
    //flush the writer so that you can clear it
    response.getWriter().flush();
    }I still get a out of memory error...
    BTW i also tried response.getOutputStream().write()...
    This is apart from the read file method given above...what am i doing wrong here?

  • JSF Properties File for Images

    I got a .war file where all my jsps are, including my JSF properties file that include a path(outside my .war file), for example:
    urlWatermark=file:///C:/SA/images/watermark.jpg
    Then in my JSP page:
    <f:loadBundle basename="jsfks.bundle.image" var="msgImage" />
    <c:set var="pageWater" scope="session">               <h:outputText value="#{msgImage.urlWatermark}" />
    </c:set>
    <img src="${pageWater}" />
    but it dont want to display my image, as when i view the source in the browser, it shows:
    <img src="file:///C:/wesbankSA/images/watermark.jpg" />
    how can i change this so that the image will display.
    thanks

    so I have to write 2000 lines of code just to reference images, outside my war
    file, using a JSP props file?No. Re-count the lines of the last given ImageServlet example (you may skip comments) and read the given examples how to use it.
    Isnt there a simpler way of doinig thisYes, copypaste the ImageServlet code, change it where needed (at least the base path, the rest can be kept default), define this servlet in your web.xml, change your <img> or <h:graphicImage> tags to make use of it and run it.

  • Problems with JSF and included subviews

    Hi everybody,
    I' ve got a problem with JSF and included subviews which makes me going
    crazy. I've got no clue why my web-pages are represent wrongly. The only
    tip I've got is that it must be connected with the kind I do include my JSF-pages.
    When I use <%@file="sub.jsp"%> my pages are are represent right. When I use <jsp:include page="Sub.jsp" /> or <c:import url="Sub.jsp" /> ( mark: the usage of flush="true" or flush="false" doesn't matter )
    my pages are represent wrongly.
    The usage of tags like f:facet or f:verbatim were also included but didn't point to an solution.
    I searched the whole Sun Developer Forum and some other web-sites for any solution for my problem but the given hints and clues didn't help. Now I'm trying to post my problem directly in Sun's Forum in hope to get help.

    Hello Zhong Li,
    many thanks for your post, but it didn't work.
    My problem is that the JSF-Components im my included or imported
    JSP-Pages does not accept any kind of style or styleClass for
    designing. The components take over the informations for colors
    but not for alignment.
    When I take a look at the generated JAVA-Source in $TOMCAT/WORK/WEBAPP for my sub.jsp ( sub.java )
    it seems that the resulting HTML-page would be presented correctly.
    But later when I start the application via Firefox or Mozilla the html-sourcecode is totally wrong.
    In my example I create a simple grid with 2 rows and 2 columns.
    Both columns contains JSF-Outtext-Components and are included with div-tags.
    The generated Sub.java shows that the text would be setted in the div-tags. Unfortunately the html-sourcecode represented by my browser shows that jsf-text is not setted in the tags but in the <h:form> tags. The div-tags are neither rounded by <h:form> nor containing the JSF-OutText-Components.
    Any clue?
    Many thanks Benjamin

  • JDeveloper 10.1.3 Bug With Multiple JSF Config Files?

    There seems to be a problem with JDeveloper 10.1.3 when you have multiple JSF configuration files. I have three configuration files created for a JSF application. One file contains navigation cases, a second file contains the managed beans, and a third file consists of the regular faces-config.xml file.
    When you are working with a backing bean in JDeveloper, it seems to have a nasty habbit of sticking a "new" managed bean definition for the backing bean you are working on in the faces-config.xml file.

    Good point. We'll try to address this in the production release of 10.1.3.
    Thanks,
    Rod

    Are you dead set on using tiles? I can see tiles including JSF but JSF including tiles? Not sure if that will work.
    My suggestion is to use Trinidad. It has the concept of Regions which is very "tiles" like and you will be far more successful.

  • JDeveloper, JSF and SelectManyMenu

    using Oracle JDeveloper 10.1.3...
    wizard creates the following in jsp file......
    <h:selectManyMenu
    binding="#backing_chemDataEntry.selectManyMenu1}"
    id="selectManyMenu1">
    <f:selectItems value="#{compatibilityGroup.compatGrps}"
    binding="#{backing_chemDataEntry.selectItems2}"
    id="selectItems2"/>
    </h:selectManyMenu>
    page is rendered, corrrect list of items is displayed,
    but the menu will not drop down and only shows one
    item at a time.........
    we want to display 3 items and have the rest in a drop
    down menu........
    if <h:selectManyMenu> is changed to <h:selectOneMenu>
    then there is a drop down but again we are unable to
    change size......
    can anyone explain this behavior/problem and/or
    provide a workaround or alternate method or
    suggestions?
    also why can't size be specified for a <h:selectManyListbox>?
    we only want to display 3 even if there's 12 and provide
    scrolling for the rest........
    hoping for an answer,
    jeanne

    unfortunately, both the plain jsf and adf jsf articles do not fix or address the problem that I am asking about.......
    all of the selectOne components render as expected,
    the problem is only with selectManyMenu.....
    within jDeveloper, selectManyMenu does not give a drop down
    and generates an error when size is specified....
    resolving the problem with the drop down is more important.......

  • JSF properties file

    Using JSF and JSTL, i am trying to use a properties file, to import an xml file.
    PROPERTIES FILE:
    name > messages.properties
    content > url=/home/index.xml
    JSP FILE:
    <f:loadBundle basename="jsfks.bundle.messages" var="msg"/>
    <h:outputText value="#{msg.url}"/>
    <c:import url="#{msg.url}" var="xmlSource" />
    <x:parse xml="${xmlSource}" var="xmlDocument" />
    The outputText works, it does display my URL, but the c:import dont work.
    I want to value that is in my properties file, to be imported i.e
    <c:import url="/home/index.xml" var="xmlSource" />
    how can i do this using the above method?
    Thanks

    Like I said here http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5175073
    Your approach won't work as the value is completely out of the scope.
    Load it manually in the same scope, using java.util.ResourceBundle for example.

  • Externalize JSF bundle files ?

    Hello,
    I would like to know if it's possible to externalize my JSF bundle files running on Weblogic 9.1 ?
    And if I modify them, will it be reloaded by server without start/stop ?
    Best regards,
    Arlo.

    Hello Arlo,
    you probably mean to store the properties file outside the war file. I do not have experience with Weblogic but it should be similar. I have asked about that here a week ago: http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5171120&messageID=9657852#9657852.
    You can search for the file in the classpath as it is explained in the link. Or you can use a static absolute path like /home/xy/ - then you can load it directly of course - which is quite improbable.
    Another possibility is to have the file somewhere outside the classpath (like /home/xy/) without direct addressing. For such a case I would use two properties files: the main file at the place you choose and the additional file which will have just one entry - the absolute path to the main file. The latter file must be in a directory accessible by the webserver (see the link above).

  • MY system folder, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac) How do I remove them

    I have a Macbook Pro running Leopard 10.5.8. I had a problem with my my operating system (my fault, I moved a file I shoudnt have) couldnt boot up but was able to boot up from a backup. I managed to repair my original system except now all the system folders, including hidden folders are littered with duplicate folders and files with the suffix (from old Mac).  For the most part the dupes are an exact copy, but not always.  I want to remove them to free up space and cant imagine duplicate folders in the /system/library are not hindering my computer. But I dont know where to start and am afraid of doing irreparable damage. Any ideas

  • Can't read or write some files, internet is failing, youtube won't load, software I tried to install was in Slovenian, not dutch or english like in my systempreferences settings, pictures and files won't preview with spacebar, etc. Malware?

    Specs:
    iMac 10.8.5
    3,4 GHz Intel Core i7
    32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Can't read or write some files, internet is failing, youtube won't load, security software I tried to install was in Slovenian, not dutch or english like in my systempreferences settings, pictures and files won't preview with spacebar and are randomly corrupted, when I entered something in the Youtube searchbar (when it was still working) it send me to a site with sexadds.
    I tried restart my iMac and when I was logged back in, my dock preferences were reset.
    Also tried to download some security software to check my Mac for malware, but when I did, I tried several, I got a notification that said something like 'dumpfiles (don't know if this is the right translation...) damaged'.
    I'm taking screenshots from all the weird notifications I get and even three quarters off the screenshots I took in the last three hours are already unreadable.
    It started this morning when I tried opening a Premiere Pro file on which I worked the night before.
    When I tried opening it, it said the file was damaged and could not be openend.
    I tried opening it with AE or importing the file in a new project but nothing helped.
    When I tried looking for autosaves, this is the really weird part, there were none.
    Even though there are autosaves from my other projects, this one was completely gone.
    It looked like the day before never happened on my computer.
    Also when I openend Premiere all the recent projects had been wiped.
    So at first I thought it was a Premiere Pro failure.
    But than, later on the day, I tried loading some RAW files from my compact flash card.
    This is where I would get an error (error -36) which said some data cannot be read or written.
    I tried importing the files with a view different technics, from dragging to importing via Lightroom and I succeeded with Image Browser.
    But when I tried moving the files to an other folder the same error occurred.
    While dealing with this issue I wanted to put on some soothing music on youtube.
    This is when the next weird thing occurred: youtube wasn't completely loading in Chrome. I refreshed a view times, checked the internet connection and still no difference.
    When I tried in Safari it did work but when I clicked enter on the searchbar in Youtube, a page with sexadds appeared (I didn't install AdBlock in Safari...).
    I read about this 'phishing' where you are redirected to a site were a possible malware installment can take place...
    I don't know if it's connected to any of the problems I've been having but I just never experienced this on a mac, I have been a Mac user for 10 years now.
    On top of it all, internet started working worse and worse and now it's not even working at all. I had to fill in the password over and over, normally it remembers.
    Just like my system preferences, all the preferences I had with Chrome where also reset.
    Also somewhere in between I got this notification: Mac OS X must restore library to run programs. Type your password to allow.
    To me this is all very weird and suspicious. I have clearly no idea what's going on. Could this be another sort of trojan horse or malware?
    Some background info which could be helpful for solving this mystery:
    two months ago the one year old Fusion Drive in my iMac just broke out of nowhere.
    I got it replaced by a qualified apple repair store.
    When I got my computer back, all the files where gone.
    I got on the internet without AdBlock installed yet.
    A game or whatever it was, can't clearly remember, got installed by accident.
    I deleted it immediately.
    Only two weeks later, I couldn't log in to my account. It didn't recognize my password and username.
    So I brought my mac back to the store.
    Here the repair guy said it was a minor thing and he just needed to reconnect my account. He also mentioned he found a downloaded game name Sparta and it probably had something to do with the error.
    I asked him; could it be a virus? He replied no way.
    I don't know why I couldn't be a virus, just because it's a mac doesn't mean it cannot be done.
    So today I tried installing anti virus software (such as avast- was in a weird language looked like slovenian, clamxav - was in slovenian) but I couldn't install them.
    PLEASE help me! I don't know what to do anymore, I work fulltime and I need my computer, I have no time to bring it in for repair, are there other perhaps easier ways?
    Could this be the work of a virus or a malware? Or is it a disk permissions issue?

    It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
    First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
    If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
    As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?
