JSF and JavaScript

As far as I can see JSF is just a non-portble more verbose version of HTML which just generates a subset of HTML more slowly and with extensive studying a new HTML-like language.. It seems to add nothing, take away a lot, and double complexity.. But that is not important.. Why would web developers want to load the server with validation code when JavaScript in the Browser can increase performance by a factor of 100.. Shouldn't we be striving to use JavaScript in the Browser to enrich and speed up the user experience instead of cutting that avenue off and reinventing an even more clunky and obscure wheel? Is there anyway to have a "tabbed pane" which doesn't rebuild an entirely new page and send it back to the client? Similarly, do any of the implementations encourage client-side validation of simple form inputs using Javascript. Java seems to be being taken over by people with IQs hovering around 100.. I have never understood where most of the J2EE expeditions do anything for Comp. Sci. except reinvent a slower more obscure less portable version of something already a standard..

Troa, my website has been moved and I need to work on it to get it working again.. I have the source code but I think that would just be confusing.. Basically, there are buttons which call a Javascript function with onClick().. The function shows a form with stuff like this
function show(formname)
formEl[oldform].style.display = "none";
var form = formnum(formname);
formEl[form].style.display = "block";
oldform = form;
and some other DHTML using the newer browser Javascript to just hide a form of components and display another one.. All the components are downloaded at the start.. The buttons just hide and disply..
As for 1000s of records in tables, it works beautifully if you zip the data as a javascript array.. When the next button is pressed another Javascript function renders the HTML for a page.. It is less network traffic than one page of a normal table.. I'll get it back up working soon and point you to it and the source code.. I just need to install Sun Web Server on my Website, but it is very small in terms of disk size..
Maybe you should send me your email so we are not filling the forum with personal communication.. My email is [email protected]

  • Jsf and javascript to disable a button

    Hi
    is there a way to get the following code to disable the button called next
    when the button "btn" is clicked i call the javascript function myFunc but it does not disable the button called "Next"
    <html>
         <head>
              <title>Personal Info</title>
         </head>
         <body>
         <script type="text/javascript">
         function myFunc()
              document.personalForm.Next.disabled=true;
         </script>
              <f:view>
                   <h:form id="personalForm">
                   <h:commandButton id="Next" value="Next" action="doSomething" />
                   <h:commandButton id="btn" value="button" immediate="true" onclick="myFunc()"  />
                   </h:form>
              </f:view>
         </body>
    </html>

    You should write Javascript according to the HTML source, not to the JSF code.
    View the generated HTML source and base your JS on that.

  • Jsf and javascript variables

    Hello, I am working on a visual jsf project.Inside my project, in a bean java class I have a string variable.Also, I have a jsp page in my project which has some javascript code inside it.Now, I want a method of the javascript to get the value of the string variable that I have in my bean.How is that possible?
    for example, I have the method
    function showAddress(address){
    and a variable in my bean: String addr;
    So I want when I run my project, the value of "address" in my javascript function to have the value of the string addr,but I haven't figured out how I can do that.

    as balusc said:
    The jsf code is generated on server side, then sent to the client (browser). At this time javascript can't call any jsf related code anymore.
    But what you can do is assign a value to a javascript variable when you are processing the jsf file on the server side. Or you can work with ajax and make requests to the server...
    If you work with an IDE, you will notice it will not allow you to assign a javascript value to a jsf variable, no matter how you write it :) The other way round it works

  • Jsf with popup window jsf and .xhtml?

    hi,
    HI,
    I am using example at http://www.jsftutorials.net/interface/jsf-popup.html
    for popup with jsf using javascript.
    In main form when click on button or link, i am opening popup window , and getting values
    from popup window to parent window.
    Here I need to pass some parameter or value to popup window without refresh the parent.
    I know with how to do jsp. but i am looking sample
    how to send parameters when we use parent and popup jsf forms with .xhtml.
    Thanks

    Hi Mainak,
    have a look to Thread:
    Popup Sizing
    As you can see there is not yet a way to set the Popup size.
    You have to find the good combination of fields and length in order to get a nice UI.
    The WDA engine try to set the best size, help it...

  • JSF and JSTL integration

    Can anyone tell me how to access JSF objects from JSTL tags?
    I want to set a requestScope flag in my changeListener
    ... context.getExternalContext().getRequestMap().put("xxx","ok"); ... and render output depending on existance of this flag:
    ...<c:if test="${requestScope.xxx!=null}" > .... .
    This examplecode doesn't work, JSTL tags cannot access this var! How can I do that?
    What I realy want is to reload another frame when user changed a specific input field.
    Above code should add a JavaScript to reload the frame if this is true .
    I can't do this on submit because the other framepage uses the stored/modified data.
    Maybe there's a better approach for this anyway?
    Thanks for your help!

    Thanks for your help - I found it was my own mistake why it didn't work. Now it does, as you said.
    But in the meentime I ran into another Problem mixing JSTL und JSF:
    I want to build a SelectOneMenu and populate it with data from a database, but with selectItemValue
    other than selectItemLabel (value should be numeric DB-ID, label a readable name).
    Since "selectItems" allows only one dimensional Arrays (?) as parameter, I must use "selectItem" for
    each row. So I wrote following code:
    <h:selectOneMenu id="m1" value="#{worktime.employee}">
       <sql:query var="employees" dataSource="jdbc/WebOfficeDB">
           select oid,displayname from employees order by displayname asc
        </sql:query>
        <c:forEach var="row" items="${employees.rows}" >
           <f:selectItem itemValue="#{row.oid}" itemLabel="#{row.displayname}" />
        </c:forEach>
    </h:selectOneMenu>This doesn't work, I get NullPointer Exceptions from selectItem.setValue().
    I think because JSF "#" references another context than JSTL "$" - is this correct?
    So I tried to set a JSTL variable inside the forEach loop to access the datarow
    <c:set var="data" value="${row}" scope="request"/>
    <f:selectItem itemValue="#{requestScope.data.oid}" itemLabel="#{requestScope.data.displayname}" />
    ...The effect is that all lines of the selectOneMenu have the same content (from the last datarecord)!?
    Since this is my first project in JSTL and JSF and should stay a small one I don't want to go into building
    CustomComponents and so on for such a simple Task.
    I would be very very happy for some tips and hints, since I think this mixing of JSTL and JSF Context
    will be a very common problem within my project.
    Thanks

  • JSF without JavaScript... alternative

    I've been looking around to see if JSF is really a good choice for the projet i'm working in... I'm between JSF and Struts for the development..
    The framework must:
    * have a great performance: lot's of visitors and a great ammount of data (member profiles and lots of database access...) everytime...
    * internacionalization
    * dynamic: the visitor is able to choose the Look and Feel for the page (templates, color schemes, ...).
    JSF has shown to be great for this aspect.. but all the implementations i've seen make an extensive use of JavaScript (even for a simple link...). The project MUST be able to work with users who has JavaScript enabled and disabled.
    I read somewhere you could have a DHTML and a HTML Renderer and decide at runtime which one to use... Is it a greate alternative? Is it worth the cost?
    Thanks everybody!

    This is a good list of open-source web frameworks. Perhaps there is something in this list that will suite your needs:

    There are dozens of CSS attributes that can (and have to) be handwritten. Trouble with them is that, like text shadows, they don't appear in all browsers. I have nine different browsers installed and test pages in ALL of them before I "finish" building site or page for a template.
    I try to build for Firefox, out of personal preference for it, but I have to do things that work with IE because it still holds the market share (46%IE to 42%FF), and I will only go with designs that work in IE, FF, NS, Opera, Safari, and Chrome.
    As to your questions.
    1. The compatibility check is most likely current with the time of the build. I don't know if that component updates as browsers do, but I'd tend to think it doesn't. I'm using CS4  and there haven't been any updates for it in nearly a year. Firefox has released 4.0, Opera released 11, and Safari released 5 since then. The updater would have found and downloaded something if it was available.
    2. I could only guess. Text shadows DON'T show up in design view (or in IE) but they do in browser preview. It's just a UI quirk, and it means "trial and error" is the onyl way to get what you want.
    3. The quick-selects which are in DW dropdowns or popouts are the ones most  common to CSS designs and have been proven to work with all browsers at the time of release of your particular build of DW.
    Hope that helps..

  • How is the length of a string calculated in Java?  and JavaScript?

    Hi all,
    Do any of you know how the length of a string is being calculated in Java and JavaScript? For example, a regular char is just counted as 1 char, but sometimes other chars such as CR, LF, and CR LF are counted as two. I know there are differences in the way Java and JavaScript calculate the length of a string, but I can't find any sort of "rules" on those anywhere online.
    Thanks,
    Yim

    What's Unicode 4 got to do with it? 1 characteris 1
    character is 1 character.
    strings now contain (and Java chars also) is
    UTF-16 code units rather than Unicode characters
    or
    code points. Unicode characters outside the BMPare
    encoded in Java as two or more code units. So it would seem that in some cases, a single
    "character" on the screen, will require two charsto
    represent it.So... you're saying that String.length() doesn't
    account for that? That sux. I don't know. I'm just making infrerences (==WAGs) based on what DrClap said.
    I assume it would return the number of chars in the array, rather than the number of symbols (glyphs?) this translates into. But I might have it bass ackwards.

  • Closing the browser windows created by web.show_document and javascript

    From Forms I am issuing a http request using web.show_document and javascript:window.open(). The http request makes a remote procedure call to a coldfusion component on a JRun appserver. I want this rpc to fire in the background so that the current forms browser window remains as is.
    The logic is as follows
    l_rpcURL := 'http://....just a standard URL.....'; -- edited for this thread
    l_jsURL := 'javascript:window.open("' || l_rpcURL || '","","fullscreen=no,titlebar=no,location=no,toolbar=no,menubar=no,status=no,resizable=no");self.close();';
    WEB.SHOW_DOCUMENT (l_jsURL,'_blank');
    The http request works fine but leaves a browser window behind. It's the one created by the javascript.window.open(). If I remove the self.close() from the javascript then I have two browser windows open, one from web.show_document and the other, as described previously, from the window.open().
    Any idea how I can force closure of the window opened by the window.open() ?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    did this occured afer installing service pack 2?
    A work around is The only solution that is to create a close.html file and calling this file in the code: Web.show_document('http://server:port/close.html','_self');
    <html>
    <body onload="closeit()">
    <script>
    window.close();
    </script>
    </body>
    </html>

  • Using Quicken to manage a bank account, I get an error message from the bank that cookies and javascript must be enabled, but I don't get that message when I connect with Internet Explorer.

    Firefox allows me to get the bank home page through Quicken. But when I try to login, the error message appears saying "cookies and javascript" must be enabled. I have Java on my system, but in Firefox under "tools/options/ I don't find any way to "enable" javascript. I have enabled "cookies".
    I have no problem logging in at the bank site using Internet Explorer, but to use it, I have to designate it as the "default browser" before connecting through Quicken. I'd rather keep Firefox as the default.
    A bank tech representative was unable to find any commands in Firefox that would deal with this problem, although she clearly had manuals for both Internet Explorer and Firefox. So she concluded that I would have to use Explorer for this operation, since it allowed control of security level settings. She said that in Explorer, security level should be set to medium.
    Is there some similar control in Firefox?

    Firefox uses the same "security level" setting that is set in IE.

  • Hi, We have an application  built using HTMl 5 and Javascript running on IPad2, iOS5.1 Safari 5.1. When we try to download a file(.pvw file) in that application safari throws "Download failed" error. Please suggest what needs to be done.

    Hi,
    We have an application  built using HTMl 5 and Javascript running on IPad2, iOS5.1 Safari 5.1.
    When a file url is clicked instead of asking for Save or Open or Cancel options, the file gets opened on IPad by default.
    Is this default behaviour which cannot be changed or can it be configured to ask user preference?
    When we try to download a file(.pvw file -> a model file) in the above application, safari throws "Download failed" error.
    Please suggest what needs to be done.
    Regards,
    Pramod

    Safari on an iPad in general does not allow downloading of files. That's a safety precaution in the iOS SDK to keep unauthorized content off of iOS devices. Safari will open from the web site file types that it can handle, but direct downloading isn't normal behavior, and I don't believe the behavior can be changed, though you can try asking in the developer forum, either here or the one to which you have access as a member of Apple's iOS developer program.
    Regards.

  • SSO and JavaScript

    Hi all,
    does any one of you know about any restriction or any other issue involving SSO and JavaScript?
    We have a web app in an OC4J instance, which uses JSP and JavaScript.
    When SSO is disabled for the application, everything goes well. But when SSO is active, the page loads a lot slower, and the IE browser always shows the error icon when any component tries to execute Javascript.
    Any ideas about this issue?
    Oracle AS 10g (9.4.1)
    Win 2000 SP4
    IE 6.0 SP1
    Thanks a Lot in advance.
    Have a nice day.
    Jaime

    It is simpler to do from server side as follows. Place below line
    inside Page_Load event of any portal component:
       Write(this.Request.Cookies.Get("MYSAPSSO2").Value);
