JSP and Tomcat Problem

Folks,
My apologies if this is off-topic for this forum, but I've been having this problem using Tomcat and JSP. I'm fairly new to Java.
Basically, I'm writing a webapp that uses servlets and JSP together. The servlet and backend classes all compile fine. Now, basic frontend page is called Console.jsp, and one of the commands that it runs is <%@ page import="DJUser">
Here's the problem: Console.jsp is in $CATALINA_HOME/webapp/
DJUser (and the rest of the classes I'm using) are in $CATALINA_HOME/webapp/WEB-INF/classes
When I attempt to run Console.jsp I get this error:
exception

Generated servlet error:

I'm running Tomcat 5.5.12 on Mac OS X 10.4. Could this be a permissions issue somehow? For right now (testing purposes only) I have tomcat running under my (non root) account.
I've been scouring the web for a while, and I can't really find anything on this. I'd appreciate any help you could give me.
Thanks!
Dylan

Put the DJUser java file in a package (say com.myClasses) and recompile. Then put the DJUser class file under the WEB-INF/classes directory in the proper package structure (WEB-INF/classes/com/myClasses/DJUser). Stop and restart the server to pick up the new classes. Make sure to change the jsp import statement ( <%@ page import="com.myClasses.DJUser">)

  • Jsp and JavaBean problem

    Hi All,
    I need UR help
    Problem:
    I have a javaBean and a jsp page say test.class and test.jsp respectively.
    Now the problem is when i run my jsp in web browser with path
    http://localhost:8080/mypackage/test.jsp and use test.class in it. It give me an error Class test.class Not Found but when i give the path http://localhost:8080/examples/jsp/parentpackage/mypackage/test.jsp
    it works fine.
    I am using Tomcat 3.2 and i have already made changes in server.xml for my jsp files thats why i can run my programs with the earlier path but dont know why its giving the error when i use javabean,
    Also i have put my javabean class in---parentpackage/mypackage/test.class
    Thanks

    Hi,
    I agree, the basic documentation at the jakarta site is good, but needs a little polishing/updating.
    Use google to do a search, and wade through loads of stuff before coming up with the answers, or this site is pretty good too!!!!!
    Unfortunately, all the answers are not always forthcoming until you know which questions to ask (or the relevant words to enter into a search engine).
    best

    Do you understand when a NullPointerException will be thrown? This will be thrown if you want to access an uninstantiated Object.
    So look to the stacktrace and go to the line where the NPE is been thrown and doublecheck if the object reference is actually instantiated.
    Or add a null-check to the object reference:if (someObject != null) {
        someObject.doSomething();
    }or just instantiate it:if (someObject == null) {
        someObject = new SomeObject();
    someObject.doSomething();

  • Exception notification through Email in JSP and Tomcat 5.5

    Hi,
    I have developed a Web application using jsp on Tomcat 5.5 web server. I want and email sent to myself if any exception occurs on the server side along with the exception.
    I am not sure if it can be done on JSP or its part of Tomcat configuration.
    I hope you guys could help me
    Thank you

    Check this page:
    http://www.imagescript.com/atg/articles/jsp_j2ee/error_page_basics.htm
    That explains how to set your own error page. Inside that jsp you can use the JavaMail api to send the exception as an email.

  • Jsp and JPanel problem

    Hello. I've been to this forum many times, but have always been a bit gunshy about posting anything of my own. Now I have a problem I haven't seen before, so here goes. I have a JPanel in a java program that has all sorts of other componants added to it. I am trying to display the whole thing in a jsp page. This is what I am doing in the java file to return the image ("display" is the JPanel):
    public byte[] getImage(){
        int w = display.getWidth();
        int h = display.getHeight();
        BufferedImage img = new BufferedImage(w, h, BufferedImage.TYPE_INT_RGB);
        display.paint(img.createGraphics());
        ByteArrayOutputStream os = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
        ImageIO.write(img, "jpeg", os);
        return os.toByteArray();
    }and then in the jsp page I say:
    <%@ page contentType="image/jpeg" %>
    <%@ page import="myPackage.MyClass" %>
    <%
         MyClass picture = new MyClass();
         byte[] b = picture.getImage();
         OutputStream os;
         os = response.getOutputStream();
         os.write(b);
         os.flush();
    %>And the problem is that the page is displaying a blank JPanel and none of the componants that were added to it. If I save the the JPanel as a jpeg in the java program, though, it does contain all the componants, so I am not sure what I am doing wrong here. If there is some way to get the all the JPanel componants returned, that would be great to know. Thanks for any help.

    nope, that didn't work.
    Maybe I am going about solving the problem all wrong. The JPanel and its componants are kind of like a template. When a user of the system submits their information it automatically puts the data into the template and displays it on screen as a jpg. It works when I save the jpg as a file from the java program but not when i send the byte array to the jsp server. It just shows the blank panel....
    Is there a better way to go about doing this?

  • Jsp and javascript problem

    I have a JSP page with a table of n rows. Each row has the option of having
              a dropdown list appear on that particular row. The user should have the
              ability to make a selection from the drop down list and have the page change
              to the correct page automatically or it can allow the user to change and
              have them click on a link that passes the value of the select box as a
              parameter to the proper page.
              The problem is that each row CAN NOT be in it's own form. The action for
              the current form is NOT the action I want the select box to use.
              I can't seem to figure out how to get the value of the select box in
              javascript passed as a parameter using a JSP variable.
              Example code:
              <form method="post" action="/index.jsp">
              <table>
              <tr>
              <td> Remove Row? </td>
              <td> View Options? </td>
              <td> Name </td>
              </tr>
              <tr>
              <td> <input type=checkbox name='<%=rowNumber %>' value='<%=
              someCheckboxValue %>'> </td>
              <td> <select name=selectOptions>
              <option value="option 1">option1</option>
              <option value="option 2">option2</option>
              <option value="option 3">option 3</option>
              </select>
                View Option
              </td>
              <td> <%= rowName %> </td>
              </tr>
              <tr>
              <td colspan="3"> <input type=button name='UpdateExampleForm'
              value='Submit'> </td>
              </tr>
              </table>
              </form>

    actually i am taking menus from database in file ourmenu.jsp
    and i have another file called menu.js which displays the menus on browser
    menu.js is the file which i have downloaded from net
    and i want to use at it is but with a difference that it should display the menus which r coming from database
    in file ourmenu.jsp i have saved the menus in array so can anyone tell me how to refer them in my .js file.
    i have tried with foll. code::
    var aUsername =new array();
    <% i=0;
    while (padtemp[i] != null)
    %>
    aUsername[<%= ++i%>] = "<%= padtemp[i] %>";
    in .js file but i am getting no o/p on browser
    i have tried with runat=server while including the .js file in .jsp file but its not working too.
    can anyone help please
    thanks in advance

    Hi,
    I tried this on OC4J 9.0.3 production ( http://otn.oracle.com ) and Tomcat 4.0.1 (Catalina). I have a SF session bean deployed on OC4J, a web app deployed on tomcat. web.xml has ejb references added.
    The code in first JSP is like this..
    java.util.Properties prop = System.getProperties();
    prop.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY,
    "com.evermind.server.rmi.RMIInitialContextFactory");
    prop.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "ormi://localhost:23891/current-workspace-app");
    prop.put(Context.SECURITY_PRINCIPAL, "admin");
    prop.put(Context.SECURITY_CREDENTIALS, "welcome");
    Context ctx = new InitialContext(prop);
    HealthCareServiceHome h = HealthCareServiceHome)PortableRemoteObject.narrow(ctx.lookup("HealthCareService"),HealthCareServiceHome.class);;
    HealthCareService js = h.create();
    Handle eh = js.getHandle();
    session.setAttribute("Eh",eh);
    and in a second JSP, I access this stateful session bean like this...
    Handle eh= (Handle)session.getAttribute("Eh");
    HealthCareService s = (HealthCareService)eh.getEJBObject();
    // do something on this instance. Everything works fine
    I dont know what versions of tomcat/oc4j you are using, may be an upgrade will help?
    Thanks,

  • Problem with html:select or html:options tags using struts,jsp and tomcat

    Hi
    I'm updating a Struts-Project to a new layout and therefore rework all jsp Sites.
    I'm also using a new Folder-Structure and update therefore my struts-config file.
    My Problem now is:
    Till now, we had a select-field with a code like this:
    < html:form action="/timetableAction" method="POST">
    < table width="53%" border="0">
    < tr>
    < td>< html:radio property="dauer" value="semester"
    /></ td>
    < html:select property="semester" size="1">
    < htmlptions name="semesterList" />
    </ html:select>
    </ html:form>
    The problem now is, that whenever I use any <html:xy> tag, the tomcat server I use can not show the page, he shows just the headers of the template, but not the
    content.-jsp-File where the form would be in. He stops right in the middle of the html page, when he notices the <html:xy> tags.
    And the funny thing is, that he has no problem to show a page when there is a <html:errors> within it? Why could this be? the struts-html.tld File is well included and teh Tomcat Server shows no exceptions.
    Waiting for you answers and thanks

    Thank you, I already got the answer in another forum

  • Cookie Problem  With JSP and Tomcat

    I have a tiny web application developed for my project thing.
    I am facing a problem while maintaining sessions with Cookie. I use Tomcat 3.2.1 Web Server and JSP 1.2 Specifications for my web application.
    I have created a page which creates a cookie and stores it in the client's PC, so when the same client visits the site, he can be remembered. Now while surfing the site in the same session, the site remembers the client. But once the client closes the browser and tries connecting to the site, he cannot be remembered. So I took a look into Temporary Internet Files of the client PC and found no cookie there. So where the cookie gets created and why does it disappears with the session. I have set a time limit of 1 year in the cookie.
    Now is that a Problem with Tomcat or with the configuration settings of IE in the client PC?? Or something else???
    Reply me Soon...

    Thanks for your reply.
    following is the code for how do i create a cookie...
    <%
         String custno = custBean.createPreferred();
         Cookie c = new Cookie("pc", custno);
         c.setVersion(1);
         c.setPath("/");
         c.setComment("PreferredCustomer");
         c.setDomain("think_machine");
    //think_machine is the name of the Web Server(Tomcat)
         c.setMaxAge(365*24*60*60);
         response.addCookie(c);
    %>
    And the code to read a cookie is..
         String custID = null;
         Cookie[] cookies = request.getCookies();
         for(int i = 0; i < cookies.length; i++)
              if(cookies.getName().equals("pc"))
                   custID = cookies[i].getValue();
                   break;
    One more thing I would like to let you know, that i access this from the same PC on which the Web Server is installed. Means the Server and the client are both one and the same PC.

    You say you have set up the environment variables, but it is not working. You may have them set to the wrong thing. One common mistake is to point JAVA_HOME at the java/bin directory rather than just the /java directory.
    Another set of eyes finds small mistakes in the variables that you might not spot yourself.
    So please, post:
    The values of these environment variables
    The path to where the products are installed on your system (ie is it c:\java or c:\j2se1_4_2 or c:\program files?
    I would take another close look at that JAVA_HOME variable to make sure of it :-)
    Good luck,

  • Jsp and db2 problem

    Hi guys:
    I installed tomcat4, db2 run time client on one red hat 7.2. Everything works fine. My jsp can access db2 database.

    I can write a java code to access the db2 database, and I can access db2 table in the command line. Jsp file is running fine. But when I use the jsp code which is working in another red hat box to access the db2 database, it can not go through and it stops in "Class.forName("COM.ibm.db2.jdbc.app.DB2Driver");" statement.

    DOMConfigurator.configure("sudarson.xml");//**********its telling it cant find/open this xml fileWhat does "sudarson.xml" mean to you? To me, it means a file name relative to the current directory. What do you think the current directory is when you're running this in Tomcat?
    You need to research the APIs more fully, to figure out how to give it a resource name relative to the application's classpath, and put that file in said classpath.
    If I were you, I would try to avoid explicitly calling DOMConfigurator.configure altogether, and just pass the appropriate Log4J system property to the commandline that starts up Tomcat. Let Log4J worry about loading the file, given the property. If I recall correctly, the system property name is "log4j.configuration", which defaults to "log4j.properties" if unspecified. Also, rather than have each application running in Tomcat have their own log4j configuration file name, I'd name them something more universal, like "log4j.xml" - then if you deploy multiple apps in Tomcat, they can all load their own log4j.xml file, as long as (again) you corrected the "log4j.configuration" system property.

  • JSP and tomcat

    hi
    When i include a bean in jsp page, is it necessary that the bean be included in a package. can we include a bean which is not included in a package.
    why because when i include a bean in a package it works fine. but when dont include it in a package i get error. i use tomcat 5.0 as my container.
    why is this. should the bean be included in package in case of tomcat.
    any suggestion do reply

    You are absolutely correct. All your java classes should be in packages.
    I actually think its a java limitation introduced in Java 1.4 - they no longer allow access to the unnamed package.
    For full details check out: http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4361575.html
    My suggestion: include all your beans in packages. Its not that hard is it?
