    thank you for your time and assistanceThis can't be done, since the jsp call will be exercised on the server, before the page gets sent to the user, while the javascript gets performed on the client (well after the jsp is done its job).
    An all server-side solution would be what you needed:
    <HTML>

    Thanks in advance...

    You can't. As is stated here about 3 times a day, Java, the JSP code, and servlets run on the Server, while javascript runs on the client (in the browser). By the time javascript begins to run, the JSP is compiled, run, the response generated and sent to the browser as HTML.
    The only means to do this is to send the variable back to the browser by requesting the same or another page and including the javascript value as a parameter to that page.

  • Accessing JSP variables in Included Javascript

    Hey All,
    I want to hide my javascript to be viewed on the client browser.
    I know we can do that with the javascript include ,But i am using JSP variables in
    Included javascript.I can't access those variables any more.
    Does anybody know any workarround.
    Thanx
    Vijay

    Hi Vijay,
    I am also facing the same problem of hiding javascript in the client browser. My javascript variables are getting initialised on the fly using JSP. Since JSP is compiled on the server side, one can't compile .js file on the client side.
    What u can do is to divide your page into frames with
    <frameset rows="100%,0%">. Now put your form hidden fields or the .js file in frame 2 which is not visible to the user and then assign your jsp variables in the frame2 html/jsp page. Now access your variables from frame2 in frame1 using
    var i = parent.frames[1].document.forms[0].elements[0].value
    Assuming that there is 1 form and 1 hidden field in frame2 html/jsp page.
    I hope u get the logic rite....
    I had done it for application but problem is that our users are real MORONS and they keep doing ctrl+F5 which takes them to the Indexpage.
    If you get some other solution then please mail it to my email address

  • Javascript error with f:subview and jsp:include

    Hi,
    I have tried to include one jsp page with jsf components into another jsp page with jsf components. But somehow I get a Javascript error.
    I have of course included the jsp:include into an f:subview like this:
    <f:subview id="tree" rendered="#{tabsBacker.treeRendered}">
    <jsp:include page="mission.jsp" />
    </f:subview>In mission.jsp, all non-jsf tags are surrounded by f:verbatim tags (otherwise, JBoss would complain anyway).
    The Javascript error says: "elements.form1:_link_hidden_ is null".
    "form1" is the name of the form in my jsp page which includes the other one.
    As soon as I remove the jsp:include thing, everything works fine. The include happens in a t:panelTabbedPane, and (probably as a result of the javascript error), the tab where the included page should be shown, can't be displayed. I can click on the tab, the page is reloaded, but nothing else happens.
    The error occurs in IE and in Firefox.
    Can anyone help me to solve this problem??
    Kind regards,
    Wiebke

    It's just a jsp fragment file. Here's the start of the jspf included above:
    <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsf/core" prefix="f" %>
    <%@ taglib uri="http://java.sun.com/jsf/html" prefix="h" %>
    <%@ taglib uri="http://www.ibm.com/jsf/html_extended" prefix="hx" %>
    <f:subview id="browseForm">
    <table class="box" width="100%">
         <tr>
              <td><h:outputText value="#{labels.someValue}" styleClass="smalltitle"/></td>
         </tr>And so on. This was just done to stop the jsp files becoming too long, I think. So the subview tag is included in the jspf file rather than around the jsp file as you have it.

    JSP/Java runs at the server side, produces a HTML page, sends it to the client side and then stops running.
    HTML, containing under each CSS and JS, arrives at the client side and runs at the client side only.
    To invoke JSP/Java using HTML you need to fire a request to the server side. That can be either a plain vanilla <a> link, a <form> to be submitted or an asynchronous Ajaxical request.
    That said, the use of ActiveX in web applications is discouraged. It's a Microsoft IE proprietaty. With other words, it isn't and won't be supported by all alternative browsers which the other half of the world is using.

    </SCRIPT>

    Ok, first let us make clear the demarcation between java and javascript.
    Java runs on the server, and produces an HTML page which is sent to the client.
    That HTML page may contain javascript code on it to run on the client side.
    As the page is loaded, javascript may be compiled/run on the client.
    So you have some javascript code which you want to include on every page as template text?
    I would do this in JSP by using the include directive to add that bit of template text to every single JSP page.
    ie
    header.jspf
    <SCRIPT language=javascript>
    <!--
    if ((document.images) && ("Netscape" != navigator.appName) && (navigator.appVersion.indexOf('Mac') == -1))
    document.write("<LINK REL=\"stylesheet\" TYPE=\"text/css\" HREF=\"http://www.telia.se/tews/css/1.css\">");
    else if ((document.images) && ("Netscape" != navigator.appName) && (navigator.appVersion.indexOf('Mac') > 1))
    document.write("<LINK REL=\"stylesheet\" TYPE=\"text/css\" HREF=\"http://www.telia.se/tews/css/5.css\">");
    else if (("Netscape" == navigator.appName) && (parseInt(navigator.appVersion) == 4) && (navigator.appVersion.indexOf('Mac') == -1))
    document.write("<LINK REL=\"stylesheet\" TYPE=\"text/css\" HREF=\"http://www.telia.se/tews/css/2.css\">");
    else if (("Netscape" == navigator.appName) && (parseInt(navigator.appVersion) == 4) && (navigator.appVersion.indexOf('Mac') > 1))
    document.write("<LINK REL=\"stylesheet\" TYPE=\"text/css\" HREF=\"http://www.telia.se/tews/css/3.css\">");
    else if (("Netscape" != navigator.appName) && ("Microsoft Internet Explorer" != navigator.appName))
    document.write("<LINK REL=\"stylesheet\" TYPE=\"text/css\" HREF=\"http://www.telia.se/tews/css/6.css\">");
    // -->
    </SCRIPT>
    <noscript>
      // stuff here for when the browser does not support javascript
    </noscript>And then in every jsp page
    <%@ page include="header.jspf" %>
    // rest of the JSP pageThe file "header.jspf" will be included with every jsp page served, and you only need to update that page in one place.
    If you have a JSP2.0 container you can define a jsp prelude which will be the same as having the <%@ page include="header.jspf" %> on every page.
    You do this in the web.xml file:
    Something like this:
      <jsp-property-group>
         <url-pattern>*.jsp</url-pattern>
         <include-prelude>/WEB-INF/jspf/prelude1.jspf</include-prelude>
      </jsp-property-group>The specified file will be loaded into every JSP page without the JSP page having to define the import itself.
    Hope this helps,

    Regards,
    Ageel

    Thank you for your reply,,,
    I think then the only way to do it is to post the
    value on the server and then use request.getParameter
    method in jsp code
    but the question now how can I post values to the
    server using JavaScript without reloading the pageyes... you can to it by create a new popup window which will submit the value to server after page was loaded... then, server return a value to the same window in html/jsp page which then using javascript to set it back to the opener and close up the window... however, this is not a good choice unless you have no other alternative...
    >
    There is other possible solution
    if I can get the text field value from the same page
    without reloading it that would work fine and will
    solve my problem, is it possible?yes... you can get the value from the textfield...
    for example :
    function showValueInTextField()
        alert(document.forms[0].elements["mytextfieldname"].value);
    >
    My final question> can jsp change things on the same
    page without reloading it. I mean can it work like
    JavaScript so that I can use it's internal functions
    instead of using java script :S
    not really know what you trying to say here...

  • Trouble including JavaScript on page

    I am having trouble including inline JavaScript on a JSF page. The code is something like this:
    <f:subview id="footer">
        <b>&#169; 2005</b> <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a><br />
        <b>Last Updated by:</b> <a href="mailto:[email protected]">[email protected]</a><br />
        <b>Last Modified:</b> <script type="text/javascript"><![CDATA[document.writeln(new Date(document.lastModified).toString());]]></script>
        <br />
        <b>Page Loaded at:</b> <script type="text/javascript"><![CDATA[document.write(new Date());]]></script>
        <br />If you experience any problems with this page, we would appreciate to <script type="text/javascript"><![CDATA[var href = "mailto:[email protected]?subject=Problem with webpage: " + document.title; document.writeln("<a href=" + href + ">hear about it</a> from you.");]]></script>
    </f:subview>None of these inline scripts are being run and the JavaScript console says that document.writeln/document.write is not a function!
    My Javascript functions which are defined in an external file and then linked in via the script tag seems to work fine.
    I have included the inline javascript in CDATA sections to avoid complaints about the jsp not being well formed (I'm using the JSP XML format for my pages). Is this the right approach? or could this be what is causing the problem?
    Any light anyone can give me with regards to this will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
    Thanks for your help. Unfortuantely that is not the problem. I do however, acknowledge your advice on doing the work on the server which seems good so I have replaced these scripts with things like
    <fmt:formatDate value="${sessionScope.rbb.lastModifiedDate}" type="both" pattern="dd/MM/yyyy, hh:mm:ss a" />which as u say is a much better solution. Anyway, I would still like to know what the problem is for future reference.
    Interestingly enough when I execute the following code:
                  var str = "";
                  for(var aProp in document)
                   str += "" + aProp + "\n";
                  alert("Properties in document...\n" + aProp);The only property I get for document is: evaluate
    Does anyone know what is happening?
    AFAIK, the correct way to include Javascript in an XHTML doc is as follows:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    <![CDATA[
    //script goes here
    ]]>
    </script>But I'm not even sure if the problem is in the way I am including the javascript anymore. Any help would be appreciated.

  • How to do a jsp:include inside a noscript tag??

    I am new to JSP and I need help to do a <jsp:include page="pageName" /> inside a <noscript> tag. My goal is to include another jsp if the user has javascript disabled on its browser.
    I am using a JSP template that retrieves content from the Database, so I need to pass a parameter also, like:
    <noscript>
    <jsp:include page="/include/template.jsp" flush="true"/>
         <jsp:param name="pageName" value="holidays_onboard_html"/>
    </noscript>
    My code doesn't seem to work. I found an explanation that says that the noscript tag is interpreted after the servlet already tried to compose the original page, so I can't use a <jsp:include> tag inside the noscript tag. Is it true? Is there any other solution for what I am trying to accomplish?
    Thanks a lot!

    Java indeed runs at the server side, not at the client side. Java runs at the server side and produces a HTML page. HTML only runs at the client side.
    The <noscript> tag is not a Java/JSP tag, it is a HTML tag. What you want is only possible when you checked in Java if the client has JS enabled, e.g. using a request parameter, or by loading the page template using a HTML tag, e.g. <iframe>.

  • Reusing the same jsp include multiple times on the same page

    If someone knows a way out of this
    I'd like to print out 2 records of the same data type I have a JSP include which does that.
    Now my issue is how to use the same include twice on the same page
    Ideally I would like to do the following:
    <%
    request.setAttribute("person", person1);
    %>
    <jsp:include page="./person.jsp"/>
    <%
    request.setAttribute("person", person2);
    %>
    <jsp:include page="./person.jsp"/>
    And in person.jsp
    I could have
    <h:inputText name=#{person.name}/>
    This fails in the updateModel phase - And I realize why it's failing. There really is no person managed bean.
    It's just that I am at a kind of loss as to what I need to do now -
    Am missing something or is it just impossible to use jsp:includes the way Ive tried to?

    I do not understand, have you created a backing bean named person? Have you defined it in your config file?
    Please copy/paster your backing bean code and config file.
    Normally, you can set directly the value of the bean by using some java code in your jsp instead of setting the request attribute.
