JSP newbie: Servlet and then?

hi
just starting to do a jsp webapp - could manage to have a registration form with a preview button
by clicking on the submit button the action refers to my servlet class which shows me the entered values
but now i want to add a save button - but where do i have to do this? please help me at the moment i do not see any solution :(

This is the perfect example of where you should be using a JSP instead of a servlet.
It is much harder to read in the above format, where as if you look at it like this:
</TABLE>
<FORM ACTION="><a href="imac2\private\test.jsp>">
<BIG><CENTER>
<INPUT TYPE="SUBMIT"
           VALUE="Save">
</CENTER></BIG></FORM>It becomes a lot easier to read, and it is quite clear that the form tag action attribute is a little wonky. you do not put an <a href> tag in the middle of a form tag :-)
I think your form tag should instead be this:
<form action="[path/to/requested/resource]">
or in your terms:
"<FORM ACTION=\"" + "imac2\\private\\test.jsp" + "\">\n" +
In most cases the action of a form points to a servlet to invoke.
You can make it a JSP if you wish, but then the JSP will be handling the form data, and (in the strict model2 architecture) JSPs should only be used for display.
The basic story:
If you are using out.println() to output a whole lot of HTML, you should be using a JSP
If a JSP has a whole bunch of scriptlet code in it, you should be using custom tags or a servlet.
The standard approach (as I showed above) is to submit to a servlet, have the servlet run java code (to save/load/do whatever) and then forward to a JSP to render the response (using the RequestDispatcher)
Hope that clears things up a little,

  • I want to send a response from the servlet and then call another servlet.

    Hi,
    I want to send a response from the servlet and then call another servlet. can this happen. Here is my scenario.
    1. Capture all the information from a form including an Email address and submit it to a servlet.
    2. Now send a message to the browser that the request will be processed and mailed.
    3. Now execute the request and give a mail to the mentioned Email.
    Can this be done in any way even by calling another servlet from within a servlet or any other way.
    Can any one Please help me out.
    Thanks,
    Ramesh

    Maybe that will help you (This is registration sample):
    1.You have Registration.html;
    2.You have Registration servlet;
    3.You have CheckUser servlet;
    4.And last you have Dispatcher between all.
    See the code:
    Registration.html

  • Passing vectors into JSP from Servlet and passing data back to Servlet

    I have been building an MVC application.
    It has a controller which instantiates classes and evokes methods to
    populate vectors. These vectors are then passed into a JSP. This part of the application works fine.
    What I am having trouble with is a new JSP I have designed; this will
    display the data that is actioned by the FORM action. This is actioned
    based on the Search criteria entered by the user. Based on this a further vector is populated and brought back to the JSP as a vector
    and this is rendered via the TABLE tag. Again this works fine.
    Against each of the rows displayed, I have a print checkbox which can be checked by the user. On checking the records they want to print, they should then hint a Print button which should go back to the Servlet and print the data. THIS IS WHERE I HAVE THE PROBLEM. On going
    back to the servlet the checkbox values are not displayed, rather
    the values that initially populate the JSP. How do I get these new values back into the vector and hence accessible from the Servlet.
    Any help with be very much appreciated.
    Chris

    Thanks for this.
    Just to clarify I am not using Struts.
    What I am having difficulties with is the fact that:
    I can't get the checked values back to the Servlet - they keep the values they have in the bean - so as part of instantiating the bean class I set the value of the item to 'off'. The user will then check
    the checkbox which should presumbably set the value to 'on'. This isn't happening because the setter method of the bean is not evoked again
    because I don't come into this JSP again - the Servlet has finished here
    and now needs to print the records. It can't do this because as
    far as it is concerned nothing has changed since it last passed through
    the vector to the JSP.
    Even when I do the following:
    Enumeration paramNames = request.getParameterNames();
    String param = null;
    while (paramNames.hasMoreElements())
    param=(String)paramNames.nextElement();
    System.out.println("parameter " + param + " is " +
    request.getParameter(param));
    what comes back is the valus of 'off' as opposed to 'on'.
    The other thing is that 'request.getParameterNames()' only works
    with the first record in the vector, i.e. it doesn't fetch any other
    records that are rendered in the <TABLE> tag.
    In desperation is there anybody out there who can help me.
    Thanks
    Chris
    I am going to assume you are using a MVC framework
    like Struts or very similar (I am assuming that from
    the language you are using).
    When the servlet passes the vector back to the JSP
    page and you render the HTML that is passed back the
    client your Vector is gone. The Vector is not
    available at the HTML level that is being viewed at
    the browser.
    When the user selects the checkboxes and submits the
    page (by clicking the print button) the controller
    servlet (called ActionServlet in Struts, yours maybe
    called something else) forwards the request to the
    appropriate JavaBean and Servlet to process the
    request. Either the JavaBean has to recreate the
    Vector (not recommended) or the processing Servlet can
    (better). You can do this by recreating the Vector
    from scratch for the HttpRequest parameters or, at the
    time of the initial request, saving Vector to a
    session and then updating with the data you get back
    from the client (again from the HttpRequest
    parameters).
    Either way you have to work with
    HttpRequest.getParameter().

    Hi,
    A user sends URL request to my jsp or servlet and then it redirects to an external site with a http or https post (not get). The post has a number of name/value parameters that are sent with it.
    How can I accomplish this?

  • AppMod pooling with Servlets and JSPs

    Issue:
    I have a servlet that I need to do some work on a BC4J View Object (myVO), like set the where clause, execute, etc. I want to perform these actions in the servlet, and then forward on to a .jsp page (mypage.jsp). Then I want to use the BC4J Data Tag library to present the data. Normally, the AppMod tag would be used to get ahold of an AppMod, but in my case, I want to use the specific AppMod that I prepared inside the servlet that forwarded to mypage.jsp.
    I have looked through the BC4J Data Tag library and it appears that the data tags are getting the AppMod from the page context. I looked at the AppMod tag and I couldn't see exactly where it was sticking the AppMod into the page context, but when I looked at the DataSource tag, it was retrieving the AppMod from the page context. Therefore, I am assuming the AppMod tag is sticking it into the page context.
    What I would like to be able to do is perform some work on the AppMod in my servlet, then forward to a .jsp. Once in the .jsp, I would like to reference the AppMod without having to use the AppMod tag, but reference the AppMod directly from the DataSource tag. This would allow me to completely manage the AppMod interaction in my servlet, thus centralizing that logic and avoiding multiple check-ins/check-outs of the AppMod. I could also avoid using stateful management of the AppMod.
    Any insights would be much appreciated!
    Thx,
    Eric

  • Converting JSP to servlet

    Hi,
    Can anyone show me how to convert my jsp to servlet. Then, from servlet to classes. Thanks.
    cheers,

    well, jsp pages are converted at run-time to servlets, e.g. if you are using tomcat as jsp engine, you will find the servlet java files somewhere under $TOMCAT_HOME/work/localhost. you can compile these java files to class files.
    PS: There is a forum in here for JSP, and I would recommend that you post your questions there in the JSP forum (this one is about databases)

  • Insert and then show the result and refresh page problem

    hi all,
    I collect the form value and put them into db, and then display this student 's inform out from db including the one we just submit, first I do it on this way
      insertpayment(UserId, FeeType, DuteDate, OfficerReason, OtherReason, CompleteDate,
                            InterviewDate, ApprovalDate,PaymentYear);
                   studentRecords= getFound(UserId);
                     userSession.setAttribute("studentRecords", studentRecords);
                     RequestDispatcher disp;
                   // disp = getServletContext().getRequestDispatcher("/WEB-INF/jsp/   studentRecords= getFound(UserId);");
                     disp = getServletContext().getRequestDispatcher("/showPayment");
                    disp.forward(req, res); then whenever I refresh my showRecords.jsp" I call the insert function. THAT IS HORRIABLE.
    I try to move the studentRecords= getFound(UserId); to my showPayment servlet and then forward the result to showRecords.jsp, but I alwarys get error
    PWC4011: Unable to set request character encoding to UTF-8 from context /report, because request parameters have already been read, or ServletRequest.getReader() has already been called
    How should I handle this kind of problem??

    Karan, thank you for the link, i read a few articles, I only get the sample part part use res.sendRedirect("/myfolder/showPayment"); in my insert servlet and use forward to display the page
    userSession.setAttribute("studentRecords", studentRecords);
                  RequestDispatcher disp;
                  disp = getServletContext().getRequestDispatcher("/WEB-INF/jsp/secure/admin/showRecords.jsp");
                   disp.forward(req, res);
    this solute the refresh page problem, but bring the new problem I can't use the following way to disable the back button. not the perter solution
    maybe I did not understand PRC more advice!!
    response.setHeader("Cache-Control","no-cache"); //Forces caches to obtain a new copy of the page from the origin server
    response.setHeader("Cache-Control","no-store"); //Directs caches not to store the page under any circumstance
    response.setDateHeader("Expires", 0); //Causes the proxy cache to see the page as "stale"
    response.setHeader("Pragma","no-cache"); //HTTP 1.0 backward compatibility

  • Problem exchanging values between a Servlet and Thread???

    Hi Everybody,
    I have got a problem exchanging values between a Servlet and a Thread...
    The actual thing will go like this
    I take a request from JSP which is served by a servlet..
    A thread is invoked in the servlets into which the parameter values taken from JSP page is sent...
    In between the thread needs to be suspended for a moment, relieve the control back to the servlet and then come back with the new values modified in the servlet...
    How is this achieved?
    Please give ur suggestions regarding this...
    Thanks in advance

    I really have no clue how you can use URLConnection to do that!
    Could you please explain in the following scenario how it can help me as an alternative solution to the following:
    Non-Servlet A continously running & saving to some prop regularly
    --> servlet B reads prop file regularly --> display continously on a jsp file
    I wish I could do a servlet A --> servlet B-- > display jsp scenario but I do not know how to have servlet A continously running while keep the servlet B interacting with the jsp.

  • JSP Best Practices and Oracle Report

    Hello,
    I am writing an application that obtains information from the user using a JSP/HTML form and then submitted to a database, the JSP page is setup using JSP Best Practices in which the SQL statments, database connectivity information, and most of the Java source code in a java bean/java class. I want to use Oracle Reports to call this bean, and generate a JSP page displaying the information the user requested from the database. Would you please offer me guidance for setting this up.
    Thank you,

  • Communication beween an http client a servlet and a socket server

    Hello I&#8217;m developing an application that needs a client to communicate with a servlet using Http and then the servlet needs to connect to a server using sockets.
    The client will send an image to the servlet and then the servlet will send that image to the server.
    Everything works OK except when I try to send the data from the servlet to the server. It seems that there is no indication of when the outputstream has reached its end. So when trying to do this at the server side:
    BufferedInputStream inFromClient =
                  new BufferedInputStream(serverSocket.getInputStream());
    int inp=0;
    while ( (inp=inFromClient.read())!=-1 )
             //do smth
    }The server will block at the read() method.
    If I close the connection from the servlet using the close() method of a print stream everything will work fine
    but I don't want to do that because I want the server to send a message back at the servlet.
    I don't know if I make any sense but I'm new to servlets and Java as well.
    Thanks in advance and if there something that you don't understand please let me know.

    I'm not quite sure what you mean. I have tried to do the same in the following piece of code and it worked fine. The only difference is that here the data is read from a file but I still send it as raw data(bytes).
    import java.io.*;
    import java.net.*;
    public class Client
        private String path="c:\\img0049.jpg";
        private static void sendImage(Socket client,BufferedOutputStream toServer)
             BufferedInputStream readFile=null;
             int inp=0;
             try
                  readFile = new BufferedInputStream( new FileInputStream(path) );
                  while ( (inp=readFile.read())!=-1 )
                        toServer.write(inp);
              catch (IOException e)
                   e.printStackTrace();
              finally
                if (readFile != null)
                     try {
                   readFile.close();
              } catch (IOException e) {
                             // TODO Auto-generated catch block
                             e.printStackTrace();
                     //client.close();
        public static void main(String args[]) throws Exception {
            // connect through localhost to the same port that the server is listening to
            Socket clientSocket = new Socket("127.0.0.1", 4322);
            BufferedOutputStream outToServer =
                    new BufferedOutputStream(clientSocket.getOutputStream());
                sendImage(clientSocket,outToServer);
            outToServer.close();
            clientSocket.close();
        }// main
    }// classIn the server side I'm just reading it with something like that
    try {
                    BufferedOutputStream out =
                         new BufferedOutputStream( new FileOutputStream("c:\\out.jpg"));
                    int inp=0;
                    while ( (inp=inFromClient.read())!=-1 )
                         out.write(inp);
                    out.close(); //close will also flush
    //.....rest of codeNow here is the servlet code of the application that I'm discussing (the servlet has already received the data from the client using the Htpp protocol. I know it has through debugging).
    I'm guessing that the servlet is storing my data in the BufferedInputStream so then I'm trying to read from there and send it to the server
    public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response)
                   throws IOException, ServletException
              /* Get input stream from mobile client: Servlet<-- Client */
              ServletInputStream inputFromClient = request.getInputStream();
              BufferedInputStream bufInputFromClient = new BufferedInputStream(inputFromClient);
              /*Create socket and get output stream in order to communicate with
               * Server: Server<-- Servlet */
              Socket clientSocket = new Socket("127.0.0.1",4322);
              OutputStream outputToServer = new PrintStream(
                        clientSocket.getOutputStream());
              /* Empty buffer and send data to output stream */
              int inp=0;
                         while ( (inp=bufInputFromClient.read())!=-1 )
                          outputToServer.write(inp);
                        outputToServer.flush();
                       //outputToServer.close(); //If I use this the server will know that the stream has ended                   At the server I'm using again the 2nd piece of code I posted above.
    That's it I hope I'm not confusing you.Thanks

  • How to get the query values from the url in a servlet and pass them to jsp

    ok..this is the situation...
    all applications are routed through a login page...
    so if we have a url like www.abc.com/appA/login?param1=A&param2=B , the query string must be passed onto a servlet(which is invoked before the login page is displayed)..the servlet must process the query string and then should pass all those values(as hidden values) to the login jsp..then user enters username and pswd, then there should be another servlet which takes all the hidden values of jsp and also username and pswd, authenticates the user and sends the control back to that particular application along with the hidden values...
    so i need help on how to parse the query string from the original url in the servlet, pass it out to jsp, and then pass it back to the servlet and back to the original application...damnn...any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks

    ok..this is the situation...Sounds like you have a bad design on your hands.
    You're going to send passwords in a GET request as clear text? Nice security there.
    Why not start with basic security and work your way up?

  • Reading a properties file in a servlet and passing its contents to a JSP pa

    Hi all,
    I'm totally new to Servlet pgmg n JSP. Please can ne1 tell how to read a simple properties file (in a servlet) and pass its contents to a JSP page.Actually the reason is to fill a combo box in a JSP page with the contents of a properties file.If calling a servlet for the same is d best way to do that, plz can ne1 tell me :
    1> whether to override the doPost method in the servlet in which to read d file using FileInputStream
    2> Putting the contents in an array and then how to pass this array to the JSP page.
    Thanks,
    deepthy.

    I'm using a properties file to let my web application know what the name of the database is. I'm using an abstract class GeneralDao which will be extended by all the DAO's (Data Access Objects or java classes containing SQL statements).
    Here's the code :
    protected Connection getDatabaseConnection()
              throws Melding
         Connection dbconn = null;
         ResourceBundle resBundle;
         try
         Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver").newInstance();
         resBundle = ResourceBundle.getBundle("gcoConfig");
         String dbConnectie = resBundle.getString("databaseconnection");
         gcoLogger.debug("lezen databaseconnection in resourceBundle " );
         dbconn = DriverManager.getConnection(dbConnectie);
         } catch (InstantiationException exc)The ResourceBundle is used to read the properties file, named gcoConfig.properties.
    With the getString() command I read the content of the string named databaseconnection.
    The gcoConfig.properties file is placed inside the folder C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 5.0\webapps\gco\WEB-INF\classes
    The GeneralDao is placed in the folder C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 5.0\webapps\gco\WEB-INF\classes\org\gertcuppens\cluifDao.
    So this class is placed some folder below the WEB-INF\classes folder of gcoConfig.properties.
    And the content of the properties file is just one line :
    databaseconnection=jdbc:mysql://localhost/cluif
    If you want to let the JSP know what's inside the properties file, wrap the content in a Javabean, put it in the request or even the session and pass the control to the JSP.

  • InterMedia Java Classes for Servlets and JSPs and Netscape

    I am using the interMedia Java Classes for Servlets and JSPs to upload and retrieve multimedia data. I have found that it is much more performant in Internet Explorer (5.5) than in Netscape Communicator (4.7). In fact, I cannot upload images larger than 10K at all using netscape. However, the same image can be uploaded into the same application using IE. Is this a known issue?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    We have successfully uploaded multimedia data in the giga-byte range (Quicktime and AVI files) at the same speed with both the Netscape (4.7n) and MS IE (4.n and 5.n) browsers. One thing we have noticed is that its very important to set the manual proxy settings correctly if you have an environment with a proxy server. If you don't, then uploads can go via the proxy server and, for some reason, that seems to take considerably longer. For example, suppose you are in the www.xyzco.com domain and are connecting to a host named webserver.www.xyzco.com, then specify webserver and webserver.www.xyzco.com (to cover both cases) in the "Do not use proxy servers for..." box in the manual proxy server configuration screen. Also, if you're using a tool such as JDeveloper that uses the host IP address in the debugger environment, then you also need to add the numeric-based (nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn) IP address to this list.
    Hope this helps.
