JSP to Java script

Here is the problem..
In a JSP page I am generating this dropdown list consisting of person names dynamically from database.
Now, onSelection of a person name, I want to display the details (i.e the phone number) related to the person in the textbox.
Any ideas ....?

In your initial pass to the database retreive all of the detail info along with the names. Store this info in an iterator then a Javascript array:
<script language="Javascript">
var[] name;
var[] adress;
<%
while(iterator.hasNext())
Hashtable record = (Hashtable)iterator.next();
%>
name = <%=record.get("Name")%>;
address = <%=record.get("Address")%>
%>
</script>
Use the Javascript array variables for display in you onSelection function.

  • Combine JSP with Java Script!

    Hi,
    I am writing a .jsp file. I am able to put value of jsp into my java script code like..
    var i = <%= k %>
    but, now my requirement is reverse. I need to put the value of java script variable i into jsp variable k.
    Someone told me that it is possible using eval function.
    Now, using eval function , I can do the following ...
    function xyz() //java script function
    eval(<% int k = 5; %>);
    but, I need to put the value of java script variable i into k.
    I tried eval(<% int k = %> + i);
    but it is not working that way.
    Can anyone tell me how can I achieve this? Please reply as soon as possible.
    Thanks

    Just came across this, and even though it's old, I thought Id add something to it since I know a lot got problems combining javascript and jsp; and that most usually don't provide enough info to get someone started.
    To be able to "use" Java variables inside a javascript, you need to pass them in the function call:
    <%
        String aVariableToPass = "tadaaaaa";
    %>
    <form onSubmit="myFunction(this,'<%=aVariableToPass %>')" method="post" name="myForm" action="">
       <table>
         <tr>
              <td>
                   <input type="submit" value=HitMe" name="submit"/>
              </td>
         </tr>
       </table>
    </form>The function:
    function myFunction(form, theVariablePassedIn)
             var accessToTheVariable = theVariablePassedIn;
    }Now use accessToTheVariable inside the javascript, or theVariablePassedIn directly if you please.

    What i've done in the past in this same situation is to use radio buttons alongside my dropdown lists. Whenever a radio button is selected, the corresponding dropdown list is enabled, and the other lists are all disabled. Not too hard to implement in Javascript either. Use an onClick() and set the other fields to disabled, using document.form.field.disabled = true. (and obviously, set the one you want to disabled = false). But obviously, you're still going to want to know which one to retrieve later, right? Use a hidden tag and in the same Javascript onClick, you can dynamically set the variable to whatever you want. Here's a pretty compact example using 2 fields
    function enable(field)
         if(field == "firstName")
              document.myForm.firstName.disabled = false;
              document.myForm.lastName.disabled = true;
              document.myForm.searchBy.value = "firstName"
         else
              document.myForm.firstName.disabled = true;
              document.myForm.lastName.disabled = false;
              document.myForm.searchBy.value = "lastName"
    }Or something like that. Yeah, I know it's not the greatest javascript in the world, but i was just simplifying things to give an example. Hope this helps somewhat :)

  • Tree View through JSP and Java Script

    Hi,
    I am looking for code or ideas of a Tree Structure as shown in in the left side frame of admin console of Sun App server 7 on the browser. I need to create a tree structure which will work on the browser like it works on the Sun App Server 7 admin console. If you had any idea or code, please share with me. I would like to have some idea before I start building it. The tree will be build from the database. So any database design is also helpful. I am planning to have that tree using JSP and EJB.
    Please help. If you are not clear what I am looking for, then please drop a line in this forum, so that I can explain it fine.
    Thanks in advance.
    Amit

    You can use the JSP Tree Tag I have developed. This helps you both structuring the tree model itself + it takes care of displaying the tree in a nice way. You can change all HTML code used to display the tree. Also you can build trees dynamically instead of just displaying static trees. Take a look at it here:

  • How to call a java script method to open a saveAS dialog box in MAU .

    Hi All,
    I am Enhancing the MAU application.
    I want a link in my order detail page , say open a link
    When I click on that link a save as dislog box should open.
    With a normal jsp and java script it can be done easily , but not sure about the coding to be included in MAU enhancement.
    Can any one  help me regarding this java script coding to be inclded in MAU.
    Thanks and Regards
    Neha Mahanty

    Hi Neha,
    have a look into the enhancement documents of MAM / MAU. There you can see that the documents (JSP and controller) have to be enhanced in a way, that you add a Z_..... module to your project for each changed file. (In Simple Words)
    Because this is the case, you can enhance your JSP with the stuff you like as long as you do it in the Z....JSP page and then it should be straight forward - as you said.
    Hope that helps!

    Are you talking about server-side java code (servlets/jsp) or client side (applet)? Given we are in the JSP forum I'll assume we're talking server side.
    If so, you are making a common but fundamental mistake. JavaScript executes on the client, not on the server. If you want client data on the server it has to get there somehow. The simplest way to do this in JSP land is via HTTP. So... have your JavaScript code call a JSP (or servlet) and pass the value you want as a URL parameter. Of course this will also change the browser location, so if you don't want this to happen use a frame or iframe to capture your HTTP request.
    For example:
    Javascript....
    function someFunction() {
    return 1;
    var value = someFunction();
    location.href="somejsp.jsp?value=" + value;

    that's correct. You can use the below code for AJAX request.

    when the jsp is invoked it is getting forwarded to the page specified in the forward tag, without checking the if conditions. Following code may give you a better idea.
    <html>
    <script>
    function test()
    if(document.f.htemp.value=="true")
    alert("jus");
    else
    var s=document.f.htemp.value;
    alert(s);
    <jsp:forward page="success.jsp" />
    </script>
    <body>
    <form name="f" method=post>
    <input type=text name=htemp value="true">
    <input type=button onclick="test()">
    </form>
    </body>
    </html>
    please help me,thanks inadvance
    regards
    chandu

    What pgeuens means is that you can't mix javascript and jsp/java code in this way.
    ALL of the jsp/java code gets executed at the server end.
    This produces an HTML page (with embedded javascript) which gets sent to the client.
    The client then runs javascript code in response to events (onLoad, onClick, onChange etc etc)
    So in this case, the jsp:forward will always be executed, because as far as the server is concerned, the javascript is just template text.
    If you WANT to do a conditional forwarding on the server side you do it in java ie (horribly using scriptlet)
    <%
    if (testCondition){
    %>
      <jsp:forward>
    %<
    %>Or if you want to test what the client has entered client side, all you can do is submit the form, or navigate to a URL
    <script>
    function test()
    if(document.f.htemp.value=="true")
    alert("jus");
    else
    var s=document.f.htemp.value;
    alert(s);
    document.f1.action="success.jsp";
    document.f.submit();
    </script>You cannot run JSP code based on your javascript code.
    Java. Javascript. Not the same thing.
    Hope this helps,

    I am new in JSP. And i am facing problem in creating two level dynamic list using JSP ,Java Script where the listdata will come from Oracle 10g express edition database. Is there any easy way in JSP that is available on in ASP.NET.
    Plz response with details.

    1) Learn JDBC API [http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/jdbc/index.html].
    2) Create DAO class which contains JDBC code and do all SQL queries and returns or takes ID's or DTO objects.
    3) Learn Servlet API [http://java.sun.com/javaee/5/docs/tutorial/doc/].
    4) Create Servlet class which calls the DAO class, gets the list of DTO's as result, puts it as a request attribute and forwards the request to a JSP page.
    5) Learn JSP and JSTL [http://java.sun.com/javaee/5/docs/tutorial/doc/]. Also learn HTML if you even don't know it.
    6) Create JSP page which uses the JSTL c:forEach tag to access the list of DTO's and iterate over it and prints a HTML list out.
    You don't need Javascript for this.
