JTable column auto-maximum width
Hi,
Does anyone have an idea on how to make the JTable to support column auto-maximum width resize, like we always see in a microsoft's table component, you double click on the column seperater and the column resized to its maximum size according to the content in it.
Thanks
Yutong
Hi again,
I wrote two methods to solve this kind of problem... take a look at them and tell me what you think about it...
/** Adjusts the widths of a JTable columns
* @param table the table
public static void resizeTableColumns(JTable table) {
table.setAutoResizeMode(JTable.AUTO_RESIZE_OFF);
TableColumn c = null;
FontMetrics fm = table.getFontMetrics(table.getFont());
for (int i=0; i<table.getColumnCount(); i++) {
c = table.getColumn(table.getColumnName(i));
c.setPreferredWidth(determineColumnWidth(c, table.getModel(), fm));
/** Returns the preferred width of a JTable column. The resulting width
* is 5 pixels wider than the biggest column
* @param col the column
* @param model the table model
* @param fm the font metrics
public static int determineColumnWidth(TableColumn col, TableModel model,
FontMetrics fm) {
String value = (String)col.getHeaderValue();
int headerWidth = fm.stringWidth("." + value.trim() + ".");
int columnNumber = col.getModelIndex();
int max = headerWidth;
int columnWidth = 0;
int nrows = model.getRowCount();
String cell = "";
for (int i=0; i<nrows; i++) {
value = (String)model.getValueAt(i, columnNumber);
columnWidth = fm.stringWidth("." + value.trim() + ".");
if (columnWidth > max) max = columnWidth;
return max + 5;

How can I save JTable column order and widths?
Hello,
I'm trying to find a way to save the current column order and widths in a JTable, so that the next time the same user runs the app I can use these same settings. Ideally I'd like to save this locally on the user's PC. I think it could probably be done with serialization, but hopefully there's a simple solution. Anyone else already tackled this?The JTableHeader class can give you all the information you through the various TableColumns.
I simply save all this information to a properties file which looks somthing like this
# Column Information
total=3
column0=Names,120
column1=Dates,140
column2=Status,110This can then be read back using a java.util..Properties object. With this information you'll need to manually set the properties of each TableColumn and use the column model to move the columns to the right position ie
cmodel.moveColumn(0,2); // move column 0 to positon 2This requires a little bit more coding to properly do the comparism of the column names with those in the properties object.
Tip: it is always easier to use the above format, ie column0, column1, column2, etc, so that you can easily use a loop to access the information form the properties object ie
int total = Integer.parseInt( prop.getProperty("total") );
for(int i = 0; i < total; i++) {
String cname = prop.getProperty("column" + i);
/// the rest of the TableColumn formatting could go here
}All the best.

How do I make Finder columns auto-fit width of filenames?
This is a tiny irritant, as such things go, but maybe one with an easy fix, if I only knew it. I normally use the Finder window in column view. Longer filenames are truncated by dots in the middle. In order to see the entire filenames, I have to go to the bottom of each column and use my mouse pointer to drag the column wider.
Is there not a way to set the columns to either "fit widest entry" or fit some wider size that I preset for them?Option dragging the resize widget || will resize all columns, wide or narrow, all the same and seems to stick.
Otherwise:
Double clicking on the resize widget || will temporarily expand that column to show all.
Option double click will temporarily resize all columns to the largest width needed..

User cannot resize jTables columns
Hello,
Using NetBeans IDE 3.5.1, I built a jTable, controlled by a
JScrollpane.
My problem is that the user cannot resize the jTables columns.
Maximum details:
1. jtablewidth is set to a fixed value according to internal data:
JTable1.setPreferredSize( new Dimension(tableWidth, i_TableHeight));
2. columnwidth is set according to internal data:
Col = JTable1.getColumnModel().getColumn(i);
Col.setWidth(width);
Col.setResizable(true);
Col.setMinWidth(width);
3. jTable header details:
JTableHeader anHeader = JTable1.getTableHeader();
anHeader.setReorderingAllowed(false);
anHeader.setResizingAllowed(true);
4. JTable1.getTableHeader().setResizingAllowed(true);.
5. Initial declerations:
a. JTable1.setAutoResizeMode(javax.swing.JTable.AUTO_RESIZE_OFF);
JTable1.setColumnSelectionAllowed(true);
JTable1.setDragEnabled(true);
JTable1.setPreferredScrollableViewportSize(new
java.awt.Dimension(650, 500));
JTable1.setPreferredSize(new java.awt.Dimension(1200, 409));
JTable1.setRequestFocusEnabled(false);
b. JScrollPane1.setMaximumSize(new java.awt.Dimension(750, 412));
JScrollPane1.setPreferredSize(new java.awt.Dimension(750,
412));
JScrollPane1.setViewportView(JTable1);
JScrollPane1.setAutoScolls(false);
c. Jtable.autoCreateColumnsFromModel (true);
Thanks alot,
ItayColumns resizing works by default. You don't need to do anything special.
If you need further help then you need to create a [url http://homepage1.nifty.com/algafield/sscce.html]Short, Self Contained, Compilable and Executable, Example Program that demonstrates the incorrect behaviour, because I can't guess exactly what you are doing based on the information provided.
And don't forget to use the [url http://forum.java.sun.com/help.jspa?sec=formatting]Code Formatting Tags so the code retains its original formatting. -
What method should be used for resizing the particular JTable Column width
I have a four table. Only one table which are on top have a table header. I want that when user resize the topmost table with a mouse other table colume also be resized automatically. So I want to know that what method should be used for resizing the particular JTable Column width.
Thanks
Lalitmaybe you can implement a interface ComponentListener as well as ComponentAdapter with your topmost Table.
for example:
toptable.addComponentListener(
new ComponentAdapter(){
public void componentResized(ComponentEvent e){
table1.setSize(....);
table2.setSize(....);
/*Optionally, you must also call function revalidate
anywhere;*/
); -
Hi,
I'm trying to resize my JTable columns with this code, but it's not working. What I am doing wrong?
for (int i = 0; i < table.getColumnModel().getColumnCount(); i++) {
TableColumn tc = table.getColumnModel().getColumn(i);
int width = (i == 0)? 10 : table.getWidth()/2 - 10; // three columns
tc.setPreferredWidth(width);
Thanks,
AndrNow my problem is that using either of these methods
is they don't carry the user's selected column width
through updates.It sounds like the change event your table model is firing is causing the entire table to be rebuilt. I would guess that you are firing fireTableStructureChanged() which would cause the entire table to be rebuilt (columns, cell values, etc.) Just fire a change event for the minimum necessary. If you can't identify what data in your table has changed (to fire cell or row change events), but the structure (columns) of the table hasn't changed, just fire fireTableDataChanged(). This will cause the cells to be redrawn with the new values, but shouldn't cause the columns to be rebuilt and resized. -
JTable column resize dilemma?
Hi:
I have a JTable instance jTable resides in a JScrollPane that loads data from a file. However the horizontal scroll bar does not come out even if there are way too many columns. I searched online and find out I have to do this:
jTable.setAutoResizeMode(JTable.AUTO_RESIZE_OFF);
Now I have another problem. Every column are the same size, even if some column clearly have longer string.
Sure I can write an algorithm calculating suitable column width, but, is there a better way? I mean JTable's auto resizing algorithm clearly know which column should be wider but it is just a little stupid for trying to squeeze everything in a tiny space even though there is a horizontal scroll bar...
Can't we let the JTable figure out the right width without the width constraint?
thanksCan't we let the JTable figure out the right width without the width constraint?There are solutions in the forum for dynamically determining the width of a column.

F2 key not working with custom JTable Column
I have a custom JTable Column (which is a JPanel with a JTextfield and JButton). Everything works as expected, except when the user presses "F2" to start editing the custom column cell. When the user presses F2, the custom cell goes into editing mode, but I am unable to type anything in it.
Below is the SSCCE.
Steps to Reproduce problem:
1) Run the Program
2) Select any cell in first Column.
3) Press "F2" and try to type into the cell. Can't type anything.

nirvan.The F2 key when pressed generates an action event (either JTable generates it or some other component). I am not sure how to handle the action event in the isCellEditable() method. Also, F(X) range of keys other than F2 dump some junk character in the JTextfield when pressed. I am now stuck at this point and don't know how handle F(X) range of keys.

How to resizea JTable column to fit to text programatically?
hi evreyone,
i'm trying to resize a JTable column width to fit to the contained text programatically.my approach was that i made a comparison between the length of String objects contained in my column and got the biggest String length value but i want to know how can i resize the column to fit to this biggest String objectYou're going the wrong way about it - don't go calculating string lengths. Get the TableCellRenderer, query it for the renderer component for each cell in the column, obtain its preferred size and keep a record of the greatest width value.

Hi all!
i'm using:
jTable1.getColumnModel().getColumn(1).setPreferredWidth(7);
to resize jtable column width but it's not working, do you know what can be happening?
thanks!All you've done is say what size you would prefer.
You then have to force the component to repaint, with something like
jTable1.invalidate();
jTable1.doLayout();
jTable1.repaint();Ps. I posted a nice utility class to automaticaly fit the JTable columns to the exact size required here.

How to catch selected text in JTable Column

Thanks in advance

Sqlldr - filler columns exceeds maximum length
Hi All,
DB version : 10.2.0.1.0
We are getting a CSV file with 127 fields. We require to load first 9 fields and the 127th field using SQLLDR. What is the best way to specify this in Control file?
Currently we are giving like
C10 filler,
C11 filler,
C127 filler,
column_name
1. Is there any other better approach available?
2. We are gettiing issues when, filler columns exceeds maximum length. We tried to give like
c10 char(4000) filler ,
But it gives sybtax error.What is the work around for this?
Thanks in advance,
Jeneesh
Please note that using EXTERNAL TABLEs or other methods is not feasible for us.Hi jeneesh,
Did you try,
c10 filler char(4000)from docs
The syntax for a filler field is same as that for a column-based field, except that a filler field's name is followed by FILLER.Best regards

When using Appleworks database for printing labels can I have columns of different widths?
When using Appleworks database for printing labels can I have a column of different width?
Case in point, the supplied avery labels in Appleworks does not have 8195. When I build one using custom design I need a small column between column 2 and 3 to line up the info in columns 3 and 4. All the labels are 1.3/4 inch wide but I need to insert a column 1/4 wide to match up with the avery page....
Any ideas???
Thanks......
---warrenWell, the issue is that when you creat a custom width of 1.3/4 from the edge of the first label to the edge of label 2 all is good. The right and left margins were also set correct in AW. The Avery page, for some reason, has a small 1/4 inch column between the columns of label 2 and 3 therefore making the distance between the left edge of the label in column 2 and the right edge of the label in column 3 - a width of 2 inches and not 1.3/4.
I guess Avery wanted the page to look even.
I did this work around.....
I created a custom lay out of 2 columns (not 4) with the correct width of 1.3/4 from label edge to label edge and the correct left side margin. After printing the first page I just turned the sheet 180 degress and printed the 2nd page to use all the labels on the Avery sheet. Since the upper and lower margin were the same it worked great....
"Great minds think alike"... thanks for your suggetion
