Only variables can be defined outside of the constuctor or methods.
Also, why are you overriding paint(...)? Have you read the Swing tutorial for working examples?

    Hey guys,
    I'm working on a java GUI right now and I've come up with a problem, hopefully you guys can help.
    I have a page that contains 50 text fields in 2 columns, so instead of making 50 lines of text field code, I decided to make an array of text fields and a for loop to cycle through each one (setting sizes, colors, editable, etc). Now the problem I'm running into is I will later down the road like to setText in these but it will be very cumbersome to have to call them by the arrayName[index #]. Just so I can better express what I mean heres is how I have to call each text field right now:
    arrayName[0].setText("1");
    arrayName[1].setText("2");
    This is how I'd like to be able to call each field:
    1stTextField.setText("1");
    2ndTextField.setText("2");
    Is there anyway I can make it so I can make an array of JTextFields and still be able to call an individual text field inside the array by name? If not, is there a way to point to another variable such as making
    1stTextField = arrayName[0] ;
    2ndTextField = arrayName[1];

  • Newbie - help needed with array and dictionary objects

    Hi all
    Please see the code below. I've posted this code in another thread however the original issue was resolved and this is now a new issue I'm having although centered around the same code.
    The issue is that I'm populating an array with dictionary objects. each dictionary object has a key and it's value is another array of custom objects.
    I've found that the code runs without error and I end up with my array as I'm expecting however all of the dictionary objects are the same.
    I assume it's something to do with pointers and/or re-using the same objects but i'm new to obj-c and pointers so i am a bit lost.
    Any help again is very much appreciated.

    Ok, so I know what the issue is now...I just don't know enough to be able to resolve it!
    it's the tempAuthors objects.
    It's an NSMutableArray which is create on the line before the start of the WHILE loop.
    Having looked through the debugger, I can see that each dictionary object is created (with different codes which I assume are memory addresses) so all is well there. However, on each iteration of the loop in the middle there is an IF...ELSE... statement which in the ELSE section is clearing all objects from the tempAuthors array and beginning to repopulate it again.
    Looking at the containing dictionary objects in the debugger I can see that the tempAuthors object that each contains has the same code (again, I'm assuming this is a memory address) - so if I understand correctly, it's the same object...I assumed that when I created the dictionary using the dictionWithObject call that I would be passing in a copy of the object, but it's referencing back to the object which I then go on to change.
    Assuming the above is correct, I've tried several "stabs in the dark" at fixing it.
    I've tried relasing the tempAuthors object within the ELSE and initialising it again via an alloc...init - but this didn't work and again looking through the debugger it looks as though it was confused as to which object it was supposed to be using on the following iteration of the WHILE loop (it tried to access the released object).
    Having read a little more about memory management can someone tell me if I'm correct in saying that the above is because the tempAuthors object is declare outside the scope of the WHILE loop yet I then try to re-instantiate it within the loop (does that make sense???).
    Sorry for the long post...the more I can understand the process the less I can hopefully stop relying on others for help so much.
    I am continuing to read up on memory management etc but just not there yet.

  • Newbie help me obi wans: ...coded locked by template or translator

    Hi Folks,
    I'm such a newbie to DW   I've been using it for a few years actually, but in a very basic sense.
    I dloaded a template, added some graphics, made some buttons etc.. and of course text, but when it comes to coding,
    I've only figure out how to add spaces  lol
    I'm trying to add a flash video to my samples page.  I can add images, but every time I add the .flv, I receive the subject message.
    So here are 2 issues:
    1. I don't know if this related to #2, but I can't erase the 3rd column...or even use it. it's locked - I see a circle with a line through it.  The template I bought did say it was 3 columns, but I don't understand why I can't touch it.  I've attached a tiff of what it looks like right now.
    2. as the subject says "changing code is locked by the template is locked a template or translator" is giving me grief.
    I've reviewed the previous posts on the subject, but I'm afraid my newbie-ness has left me not knowing what to do.  ie. I can't find a time/date to change...I see the <head> and <script>, but they're greyed out on the one page I'm trying to edit.  They're not greyed out on the template page however.
    I also tried saving my .dwt as a new template, but that didn't work either.

    I found the 2 things to change, but when I go back to my page...everything is gone!  eek
    (fear no panic - I did back up my website prior to making any changes
    (file attached).
    it looks like there is only 1 column instead of 3 sections. I was hoping to lose just the one on the right.

  • Java Arrays - newbie

    hi again. im' new to java, but done other programming for 6-7 years now.
    I will be using this forum for a long time hehehehe..
    OK, I am wondering, how can we take user input (easy) and store it in an array and then call that array up and display on the screen?
    also, how do we compare whatever the user inputted, with an array? for example, if the user entered "Dave", how can we see if "Dave" is in the array and at what position? (like is it in array 1, array 2 etc..)?

    I am going to sidestep the issue of getting input from the user, and assume you're getting the user input into some string, ok? use the following code to get it into an array - remember, when using an array you have to know how large to make the array before you use it.
    String[] yourStringArray = new String[10];  // assuming at most 10 entries
    for (int j = 0; j < 10; j++) {
        String userInput = System.in.whateverYourDoing();
        yourStringArray[j] = userInput;  // you could combine these two lines
    //  Now the array contains all your user inputThe equals method is how you test for equality between objects. You use the == operator to test for equality in the value of primitives (if (i == 4) for instance) but you don't use that for testing for value equality between objects. If you say if (thisString == thatString) then you are asking if the references thisString and thatString refer to the same memory location, not if what they refer to have the same values.

    Hi - I'm teaching computer science to myself (java, using jGRASP) using some websites online, and one of the activities I have to do is to make an "image smoother" program.
    I just started learning about 2D array, and I think I get what it is (based on what I know of 1D arrays), but I have no clue how to do this activity.
    This is what the description says:
    "A grey-level image is sometimes stores as a list of int values. The values represent the intensity of light as discrete positions in the image.
    An image may be smoothed by replacing each element with the average of the element's neighboring elements.
    Say that the original values are in the 2D array "image". Compute the smoothed array by doing this: each value 'smooth[r][c]' is the average of nine values:
    image [r-1][c-1], image [r-1][c ], image [r-1][c+1],
    image [r ][c-1], image [r ][c ], image [r ][c+1],
    image [r+1][c-1], image [r+1][c ], image [r+1][c+1].
    Assume that the image is recangular, that is, all rows have the same number of locations. Use the interger arithmetic for this so that the values in 'smooth' are integers".

I want to test for equal strings, not the same object. Second question can you use all 64 bits of an unsigned long? java doesn't seem to allow this. Any packages that do?

    Try casting it to Long instead of long. Long (capital L) is an Object, while long (lower case l) is not. You may also check to make sure the value isn't null. I would have thought that autoboxing would have worked here unless the value was null. But I am no expert on autoboxing.
    Edit >> Checking for null ain't a bad idea but has nothing to do with the problem - this is a compile time problem. Sorry.

    Arrays in Form are implemented through Record Groups. However you can enable and disable a menu item throught database roles.

  • HP Proliant 0 Storage Works Disk Array Mounting help

    I am a Solaris newbie so please bear with me while i try to explain the problem.
    I have just installed Solaris 10 (x86) on a HP Proliant DL380 G4, this involved applying the friver updates for the RAID controller to allow the Solaris install to work.
    The machine has two raid controllers the onboard 6i controller and the additional 6400 controller we've added (it's a PCI SCSI controller) to hook up the Storage Works (used to be called Smart Array with Compaq).
    Now, i can only see my disks in the server itself and need to know how to mount or add or configure the disks in the storage array. I think i have the driver installed for the 6400 raid controller but the next step i am not sure of.
    Is anyone able to offer a suggestion ?
    Having a HP server with a Storage Works device and a numebr of additional discs should fairly common but Google hasn't turned up anything useful.

    Further information (may or may not be useful).
    In the Server BIOS i have the following information for the disk array controller:
    Logical Drive #1 RAID 5 1955.8GB
    Direct Attached Storage
    Controller HP Smart Array 6400, Slot 3
    The individual disks are (i have 8 in total):
    SCSI Port 1, ID 0
    SCSI Port 1, ID 1
    SCSI Port 1, ID 2
    SCSI Port 1, ID 3
    SCSI Port 1, ID 4
    SCSI Port 1, ID 5
    SCSI Port 1, ID 8
    SCSI Port 2, ID 0
    I don't know what happened to SCSI Port 1 ID 6 and 7.
    In /dev/dsk/ i have quite a few disks listed but htey don't seem to map onto the 8 disks, or the one disk logical disk i was expecting solaris to see.
    I thought my disk would be something like
    c1t0d0 - is the disk which Solaris install found (i think)
    c2t0d0 - this is a symbolis link to devices/pci@0,0/pci8086,3599@6/pci8086,329@0/pci1014,la7@2/pciell,409c@4/sd0@0:wd
    Is this my second disk ??

  • Newbie help on Queries

    I just set up my first query page using two tables (categories and properties) and I set up a simplistic page here just to see if the data loads:

    It does, but it loads all the entries of the properties table. I just want it to display one of the three categories (One Bedroom, Two Bedroom, Three Bedroom) and I thought just adding ?id=1 would do something like that but it didn't change anything. I set up a query with a join using ADDT connecting the category row from the properties table to the id row of the categories table. So why am I getting all the data instead of just one of the rows from the categories table? Can anyone help an ADDT/PHP newbie?

    yes, the "detail2properties" query should have rather become somewhat enhanced to filter against a certain URL variable, but this requirement probably wasn´t clear at the time you implemented the Nested Repeat Region wizard.
    The demo you were using apparently didn´t cover this particular scenario -- but when trying to create a "real world" application, the specific requirements are usually different from any tutorial.
    However, ADDT actually provides two Nested Repeat Region "flavors" -- a) the Wizard that´s doing everything for you without having to provide the recordsets, and b) the Nested Repeat Region *server behavior* which can be applied to existing recordsets. I´m not sure which one you actually used, but I guess it´s the Wizard, which can be a little inflexible when it comes to the generated recordsets.
    You think in future versions of Dreamweaver that text should be selectable?
    no clue, I´m not involved in developing DW ;-) However, please feel free to file a feature request.

    When you say movie clip, are you reffering to the last frame
    of the clip that is being pulled from the library, or the scene
    that the button resides in. I tried adding it to the last frame of
    the library clip, but it doesnt do anything. Any ideas?

    I'm still having some issues. 
    1st - Deviation calculation seems wrong, as it produces infinite.
    2nd -?     A horizontal bar graph showing the performance for each city, to the nearest million dollars.  Not sure how to produce that.
    3rd - ?     List in descending order of profit, the cities and their respective profit.
    I'm still working on this situation, but help is appreciated if you can set me to the right path.  Producing the array bar is the problem I'm mainly     I offered to help him stated at my last post in his topic. Different people, not sure how to prove we're different people other than IP check. He didn't need to produce "origin"city. Just the two arrays of Profit and city. I went ahead and develop a test class to test out the input.

    This depends on user hitting enter after editting but you can do simular things with other types of events. The major point is that by assigning a name to each field you can rapidly determine which field fired the event. This is probably far more efficient for very large arrays of tields.

  • Newbie help needed with Applet

    I am having a problem with the following Applet. I have highlighted it in bold.
    How can I ensure that all of the conditions are met regardless of the order they are inserted on the graph,within the program?
    At the moment I have to do them in the exact order they are in the code in order to get the "Winner" message.
    Also if I insert an image at any time at the point if(x >= 290 && x <= 350 && y >= 290 && y <= 350) I also receive the "Winner" message. I realise this happens because it is the last line of code in this statement.
    However I am very new to this and dont know how to fix it. Indeed I dont even know if this is the correct way to do this.

    Since your code is heavilly dependant on which square is clicked on I'd define a class extending JComponent to represent a square. You can make this an inner class, which would simplify access to other squares etc. Then lay these out in your JPanel, and each will have it's own paint method which will paint it with or without a pawn.
    At the same time you add all these as a two dimensional array for logical access. Each square has (or is) it's own mouseListener so that you can let awt figure out which you clicked on.
