Jump to a slide in another project

I have seen some discussion on jumping to a slide in another project. Specifically, the following post talks about how to accomplish this in Captivate 4, using Javascript.

I am using Captivate 6 and the code supplied for CP4 does not work for me. Does anyone have any updates on how you can do this CP6?

I'd prefer the project to be a swf, is it possible to open the file on a specific slide if it's published as an exe?
Unfortunately not. The JavaScript API only applies to web based content. If you need to run the project locally, I'd recommend using Adobe AIR. Inside of AIR, you can run JavaScript.

Is it possible to define a button action which will (a) open another project and (b) jump into a certain slide?
The first part is quite simple, but I am not sure how the 2nd part can be done.

Hi Julie. I believe the 2 Captivate projects would both have to be published as SWF/html, and both accessed via the browser. So one Captivate project playing in the browser can jump to a second Captivate project playing in the browser, and then move to the desired slide.

Problem translating click/highlight boxes when copy and pasting slides from another project

I'm baffled by this problem as it doesn't seem to make sense. I opened up a new project to record a simulation in and when I was done, I copy and pasted all the slides into the appropriate section in my "Master Project" if you will. After the paste, I noticed that all the clickboxes and highlight boxes I had taken the time to carefully resize were all out of wack in terms of position. Here's the kicker, I opened up a blank project and copy/pasted the same slides...this time the click and highlight boxes were in the correct position. Any ideas?

Oh, 'in terms of position'... I see...
Is the one project larger than the other? For example, the original perhaps at 800x600 and the new at 850x650?
Positioning may then be off relatively....
Pick a couple sample elements and note their x/y positions from the Properties panel in the first project (under 'Transform' in CP 5.5).
After pasting into the new, note those same x/y positions.
Is there a noticable factor?
If this is the issue, be sure the sizes are the same, do the paste, then expand the project later (and maybe everything will retain its anchors?)
I've not seen this occur in newer versions of CP.
You could try checking the 'Constrain Proportions' option in the properties of the original, just in case that helps 'constrain the position' too...total guess...

How to link to another project?

Indeed it is possible. You must use some JavaScripting and Variables and Advanced Actions, but it can happen with Captivate 4.

Advanced action: jump to next slide if all text entry boxes are filled out. If not, pause project and show error message

Working with captivate 4 and advanced actions, which is a great new feature, I encounter the following problem:
I have a sign-in slide, where the user has to insert his name and several other data. For user-friendly handling, I have the text entry boxes appearing one after another, so when the user confirms his entry, the next text entry box appears and has the focus.
The button for jumping to the next slide works with an advanced action:
Only if the user has filled out all the text entry boxes, the action "jump to the next slide" is performed.
If not, an error message is shown.
It works well so far.
Now, I want the project to pause there, and not to jump back to the beginning of the slide (as suggested in another Thread in this forum), because then the text entry boxes dissappear again.
I tried to set the movie control variable rdcmndPause to 1 in order to make the movie pause, but nothing happens.
I tried it with an external playback control bar and without, it didn't work in either case.
I found the hint:
To control the project through the skin file, add the prefix cpSkinLoader_mc to the variables. This might be the solution.(?)
But how can I change the name of a MovieControl Variable?
If anyone knows, how this is supposed to work or has another suggestion to solve the problem, please let me now.

Hi Petra,
I believe I can help you, but from a completely different angle than anything you've tried yet. I try to find simple solutions to complex problems. No advanced actions will be needed, just a little creative timing. First, I need to be sure I correctly understand what it is you're hoping to accomplish.
If I understand you correctly, you've got a single welcome slide. On this slide you've got several TEB's (text entry boxes), set up with variables to make your project more personal or gather some required information. These TEB's have no right or wrong answers, they simply require an entry: such as an address which begins with a numeric key. The TEB's are set to appear one after another, as one is completed the next one appears. Once all have been completed a next button, set to "jump to next slide" takes them to the next slide and on through your course. You want the project to pause until the user clicks this button, and only proceed if all TEB's have been entered. If not, you wish an error message to appear.
If the above description is correct, I'd do the following:
Leave your TEB's to show up one at a time as the previous is submitted, as you've described. (each one pauses the slide till info is submitted, then "continues" the slide and the next TEB displays)
Set each TEB to "display for rest of slide".
For the next button: In the properties dialog box, options tab, name the button "Next_button" and uncheck the visibility box.
Open the properties for the final TEB that students will fill in and set the on success property to "show" then choose the Next_button by clicking the drop down arrow beside the "show" field. This will hide the Next button until all TEB's have been filled in.
There is no error message, because there is no possibility of error. Why tell a student they've messed up, just eliminate that possibility! All TEB's only display after the previous is entered, and the Next button is hidden until the last TEB is entered.
I've tested this in a simple 3 slide project and it all worked fine, including some variables. If you need more detailed info, or would like to see the sample proj. I created let me know.

Slide size issues with copy from another project

Working with Captivate 4. I have a completed project where I have a slide I would like to re-use in a new project. The recording options for each project are the same - full screen recording. The image is being cut off all the way around the when I 'Copy Slide' in Project A and 'Paste Slide' in Project B.
If the layout size is the same, why is the image being cropped/adjusted in the Paste? Is there any way to adjust the size of the image when pasting an entire slide into a project?

Seems odd. But I may have a workaround. What if instead of copying the slide, you simply insert a Blank slide in the new project? Then you copy the background of the slide from the older one and paste as background into the newer? Results the same then or what?

Click box - Opening another project again, again, again...

Hello,
I think I'm an idiot. I've read almoust all of the "opening another project", "linking..." etc discussions. But I have no idea how to make it working. Starting once again:
I have unlocked Flash security or whatever it is. I have a project and it is so big so I decided to cut him for more smaller projects. I would like to have a one slide project with many clickboxes areas for opening another projects.
I exported, pubished all possibilities of linked project(swf,CP,hml...) to one slide project folder. I tried Open another project, open file/URL. Nothing happens.
What do I have to do, step by step.
Where should be all projects, what formats, where to preview
I hope u understand all.

Let me explain...
For example I have a one slide project. On this one slide is screenshot of www.adobe.com, just a picture.
I also have few more projects called "Products", "Solutions", "Learning", ...
Each of these projects explains what any of these "folders" contains.

Instead of having this all in one project(1000 slides) I would Like to have main page with "hyperlinks" to another projects. But I don't want My main project to open another project as another file/window. I just want my main project to "jump to another project" in the same window. Is this possible in .exe file or .swf ?
Another way:
I would like to have my main project on web. So like the first time user won't be jumping to another windows or tab. He will be watching in one tab, one captivate "movie".
Is this possible ?
How Can I do that ?
And how Can I open those another project in other tabs/windows in web.
I tried to publish all projects to the same folder but it doesn't work... Maybe I did sth wrong. Can u write it step by step what should I do?

Want to open another project from Quiz Results - can't get it to work.

I have been trying to get my course to open another project (an instruction slide) after the user completes a quiz and it is not working. The course always closes after the quiz results. I have set the Project End Options and the Pass or Fail options to all open another project (the instruction slide), but instead, after the user clicks 'Continue' on the quiz results page, the course always closes. What could I be missing? (Am using Captivate 5.)

Just finally getting my head above water and am able to respond and update. Yes, I was using a tool called RELOAD to update the imsmanifest file. Actually a great tool that I can recommend now that I worked out the kinks with Captivate. Here's a quick summary of how I ended up resolving this - I can't even remember all the different options I tried until I settled on this! I never resolved the issue with launching another project from the quiz results page, but found a workaround that works even better.
The course starts with a brief introduction module. The 'Continue' button on the last slide is set to launch another project, which opens the course's 'main menu.'
The 'main menu' project has several buttons that launch appropriate sub-topic projects.
On the last slide of each of the 'sub-topic' projects has the 'Continue' button set to launch the 'main menu' again. Each of these had quiz questions, but feedback was set at the question level only - no quiz results page.
The last option on the 'main menu' project was a 'Course Completion' button - which launches a project containing the final quiz. (NOTE: This was always the only project that had the "Show score at the end of the quiz" set to display under Preferences / Quiz / Settings. After a lot of hair-pulling, I realized that it wasn't necessary to open another project to accomplish what I wanted to do, which was return the user to some basic instructions before they retook the quiz.)Here is how the last project was set up.
The first slide is a content slide with instructions for the quiz. When the user clicks the "Back" button from this slide, it will launch the 'main menu' project. 'Next' simply goes to the next slide.
Slides 2-5 are quiz questions
Slide 6 is the quiz results slide (turned on under Preferences / Quiz / Settings). Buttons are: Review Quiz and Continue.
Slide 7 is a content slide with instructions on what to do next. This slide has a text button that I called "Retry" and under Properties / Reporting for the button the "Include in quiz" is NOT checked. The Retry button takes the user back to the first slide in the quiz.

Unable to import slides and save project

Hello Captivators,
I have a problem. I call it a big problem. I am unable to
import any slides from one project to another.
I have a project with 15 slides, some with audio. And I have
a similar project with the same number of slides.
I wanted to import from project a to project b just two
slides with objects. The import seems to work. I get an asterisk in
the title bar, indicating the project has changed (added two slides
with audio). I then attempt to save this project (under the same
name). The screen locks, I get a permanent hourglass (using Windows
XP on HP xw8400 workstation), and the app goe to the "not
responding" state. and a CTRL-ALT-Delete takes several tries before
I can kill the app(s). It also seems that I get two instances of
the project when I try to kill the app in Task Manager.
Anyone seen this before???

to save the
project as a *different* file after importing (or maybe just
try
copy/paste?) in the two new slides?

How can I link to a certain scene in another project?

Hi,
I would like to make a add an advanced action to a button that links to a cetain scene in another project.
as an example:
On the last scene of project B I want to link back to project A scene 3. This is back to where the initial selection to open project B was made.

I just dislike talking about a slide, as we are not working with PPT!!!
An e-Learning module with interactivity should not be compared to slides as in PPT, I think as there is much more to it!!!

Inserting animations from another project

Hello,
I'm using Captivate 5 (ver. 5.0.2.630) for a while know and up till know I've included interactive content by using creating it in another project, publishing it and than I included it as an animation in my main project.
That worked fine for me for while but roughly since the last patch the anymation I include won't show anymore.
The old anymation I included some months ago are solid white (picture 1) work perfectly fine but the ones I recently included are see-through and won't show in the publishe project (picture 2).
Any ideas how to fix this?

Sorry if I was unclear on this. The animation was created in captivate and then imported into my main captivate project as a .swf. I've been working that way since march this year without problems but for the last 1...2 month it just doesn't work anymore.
What I've done so far is to include the slides from the "animation" project and included them into my main project. But that's not always possible since I might cause problems with my navigation on some occasions.

Importing Quiz project as swf into another project

I've been playing around trying to get projects within
projects. My latest attempt has been to create a multiquestion
project, export, and then import into another project which has
demos, images, ect...
I've been able to rig it so one question swf files are
working, but when I import projects with more than one question
slide in them it seems to display both slides at once. I've tried
using a paused transparent button, to no avail.
Does this make sense? Any ideas?

That's a common mistake when loading swf's. Likely you are trying to reference the stage in the loaded movie, before it's actually been added to the stage. Use the ADDED_TO_STAGE event to init your objects...

Cp4: slide shows another slide during transition 'fade'

I'm using Captivate 4, and have created a project with 22 slides. Each slide has a background consisting of a screenshot of an application. No imagelayers on top of that, except for highlights and textboxes. Also, each slide contains audio and a few slides contain Flash video.
Problem: when using the transition option 'fade' from slide 4 to slide 5 (slide 5 - transition 'fade'), another slide shines through some of the white space. The slide that shines through could be three different slides, which all contain the same image.
In other words: when transitioning from slide 4 to 5, slide X (could be three identical slides) shines through the white parts for half a second.
I have tried:
- Creating a new slide within current project, with a new background and copying the highlights etc (same problem)
- Copying all slides to a new project (same problem)
- Adding blank slides before and after the slide that shines through (still slide X shines through)
- Checking for transparency (none)
- Inserting the background as a new png and merging it into the background (same problem)
- Inserting the background as a new png and showing it to the end of the slide wthout fades (same problem)
- Removing the transition altogether (works, but I need the transition!)
I have run out of options. Can anyone help me?

Hi,
Lets get this clear...
When you set Transition -- it set how the slide will appear ( basically fade-in in your case )
So your 5th slide must have Transition-Fade. Slide background will too fade in for 5th slide.
If you want that your screenshot isnt visible while slide transition you can add them as image-items and make them appear after fade completes.

Unable to link to another project

Hi there
Relatively new to captivate, so just wondered if somebody
tell me if I'm doing something wrong. I have created a quiz with
about 30 questions. At the end of the quiz I want the user if they
require to link to a different project with a detailed explanation
about the correct answer to each question (I know I could do this
in the review section of each question, but there doesn't seem to
be enough room within the review question textbox to place the
answer and there seems no way to create a scrolling textbox in
captivate
when I create a slide and place a button on the slide linking
it to another project, when I view that slide in the Web browser
and click on the button it won't take me to the new project, and
comes up with an error message about not finding the file.
Any insight as to what I'm doing wrong would be greatly
appreciated.

When you assigned the action to the button, exactly what
action did you assign? If you selected "Open other project", you
should have been prompted to navigate to where the other project
exists on your hard drive. After you publish, you then need to
ensure that both outputs exist in the same folder.
