JVM multithreading parameters

Could you please tell me if there are JVM parameters to determine number of threads when JVM is starting up?
thanks so much

Your code must start threads. See http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/essential/concurrency/index.html

    Hii..
    what parameters should be changed in context file of oracle apps(R12.1.3) for 250 users and pfile parameters of database

    But i came to know we need change parameters like s_oacore_nprocs,MaxPermSize,-Xmx for Forms and Oacore in Context file of apps, based on number of users .Is it correct???Yes.

  • Correct Server JVM Configuration ??

    Hello All!
    We are running SJSAS7 on a Sun V880 with 12Gig Memory, 6 CPUs (750Mhz) with following Server JVM Configuration Parameters:
    <jvm-options>-XX:+AggressiveHeap</jvm-options>
    <jvm-options>-XX:+DisableExplicitGC</jvm-options>
    <jvm-options>-server -Xss1024k</jvm-options>
    <jvm-options>-Xms3584m -Xmx3584m</jvm-options>
    Since we have a maximum heap size of 3,5Gig, 8 Gig of our real memory is still free. Does is it make sense to push up the heap size to lets say 8-10 Gig, or will this not really lead to a performance gain?
    Any Input on this topic is very welcome
    Kind Regards

    btw.
    are there any other hints how to use up the capacity of our hardware
    eg. when using Sun One AppServer 6.5 we had 5 kjs-engines (2gig heap each), so the overall memory usage was better.
    kind regards
    hannes

  • In a single JVM the objects can pass-by-value ?

    what happen when a bean call to another bean which already deployed in the same container?
    how many JVMs in a container?

    "I thought parameters were all pasted by value because Java doesn't support pointers?"
    Incorrect assumption.
    Java doesn't let you fiddle with pointers, but effectively all object variable references are pointers (not exactly though). If you are working in a single JVM all params are passed by value, but when you think you are passing objects you are really passing object references, so it is they (the object references) that are passed by value.
    Within the scope of EJB, objects (not the references) are passed by value because we are talking about remote method calls. Since calls are assumed to be between separate JVMs the object state must be copied across the wire.
    In the case of an EJB calling another within the same JVM, the parameters passed must still be passed by value since the receiving code may rightfully assume there is no shared object state (the implementation could be pass-by-ref as long as the container could somehow support the above assumption, not very likely).

  • Multiple applets, single JVM == out of memory

    Consider the following applet (MS IE 6, JRE 1.4.2_04)
    public class DgAppletTest extends JApplet
    double nums[];
    public void init() {
    nums = new double[10000000];
    public void start() {
    public void stop() {
    public void destroy() {
    This does nothing except allocate a large array. When this is delivered to the browser as part of an html page, a JVM instance is created and so on. The plug in control panel confirms the memory usage. When the user closes the browser window, the applet is "destroyed" but curiously the memory is not gc'ed. The next time the page is delivered the same JVM is used with the current memory situation. The result is that very soon the memory is exhausted.
    Once upon a time, Microsoft launched each browser instance into a separate process. No longer, although there is a registry hack to make it do so. When as a separate process, each browser window instantiates a new JVM. In this scenario, there's no problem. However, hacking the registry is not a solution, nor is telling the end user to modify JVM startup parameters.
    So, what am I not doing? (calling the gc within the applet has no effect on this). What's the trick to get the JVM to actually destroy the destroyed applet?
    Thanks

    Objects are never null. Only references can be null. If you set the only reachable
    reference to the object to null (or to any value other than pointing at that object), then the
    object becomes eligible to be garbage collected. When--or if--it actually gets cleaned up
    is beyond your control, but it's guaranteed to happen if the memory is needed.

    Hi:
    the problem was not resolved deleting/uploading the components, the problem was resolved increasing the memory in the host and tuning the JVM memory parameters.
    In our host the memory was reduced and this was the origin of the problem

  • Use of local interface btw EAR

    hi,
    Can i use local interfaces to call session bean of EAR1 from EAR2. in my case EAR1 and EAR2 are deployed in the weblogic instance(same jvm). and parameters are being passed by value(because of 2 different classloaders).
    I tried doin this ... but resulted in exception being thrown when i tried to do a lookup to the localhome of EAR1.
    Please advise,
    venkat

    Hi,
    Even though they are running in the same JVM, the classes are not visible between EAR1 and EAR2 because they are loaded in separate classloaders, therefore local interfaces won't work.

  • JNI_CreateJavaVM returns JNI_ENOMEM (-4) from different versions of the jre

    I have created a JNI dll, invoked from a VBA Excel add-in to execute Java code. This works fine until I introduce the -Xmx parameter as a vm option.
    Before creating the VM, I use a VirtualAlloc/Free loop to make sure the -Xmx parameter is not too large, decrementing it by 2MB each time until an allocable amount is found (thanks to [jurberg's post|http://forums.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=37&threadID=5220601]; my version, slightly modified, is posted below). I then pass that value to the VM via the -Xmx option.
    This works great when I am using a JRE 1.6 installed in the "C:\Program Files\Java\*jre1.6.0_xx"* directory. When the same* JRE version is installed in the "C:\Program Files\Java\*jre6*" directory, JNI_CreateJavaVM fails with JNI_ENOMEM. Calling GetLastError returns 0 ("operation completed successfully"). Using a *1.5 JRE*, this also fails, returning JNI_ENOMEM, but GetLastError returns error code 6 ("the handle is invalid").
    A little about my platform:
         Windows XP Pro
         Building JNI dll using Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 and 1.5 JDK
    I have multiple JREs and JDKs installed on my system as this is a dev machine, but I have the same problem on a non-dev machine running XP Home.
    Here is a snippet of my code used to create the vm:
         // create the JNI structures
         const int numOptions = args.size();
         JavaVMInitArgs vm_args;
         JavaVMOption* options = new JavaVMOption[numOptions];
            log("Creating JVM with parameters:");
            int i = 0;
            char * nextArg;
            for (itr=args.begin(); itr != args.end(); itr++) {
                nextArg = new char[(*itr).length() + 1];
                strcpy(nextArg, (*itr).c_str());
                options.extraInfo = NULL;
    options[i++].optionString = nextArg;
    log("\t" + string(nextArg));
         vm_args.version = CRUSH_JNI_VERSION;
         vm_args.options = options;
         vm_args.nOptions = numOptions;
         vm_args.ignoreUnrecognized = JNI_FALSE;
    // load and initialize the Java VM, and return a JNI interface pointer
    JNIEnv* env = NULL;
         err = (*createVM)(&jvm, (void**)&env, &vm_args);
         // err is -4 (JNI_ENOMEM) in the cases described above
    Does anyone have any suggestions on what is going on here and how I might make this code stable for all 1.5 and 1.6 JREs, regardless of where they are installed?
    Thanks in advance,
    Sarah

    // be 512*4096 = 2MB aligned.

    if (maxHeapBytes == originalMaxHeapBytes) return maxHeapMB;
    // calculate the new MaxHeapSize in megabytes
    return maxHeapBytes / NUM_BYTES_PER_MB;

    I have a similar, but I think much simpler problem. Namely, I get ENOMEM's when as far as I can tell there's plenty of memory available. It seems to have something to do with how Windows is configured, although I've never been able to determine what it could be.FWIW, in my case, I found that if I loaded my JNI dll into a console process, the max heap requested was always allocated. But when loading into Excel, the same amount would be too much. This was partly due to the fact that Excel has its own memory management, limiting the amount of memory workbooks can use. Also, it could be due to the vm not being able to reserve a contiguous chunk of memory for the max heap space.
    Why (and how) separate the permanent generation space from the rest of the max heap? It seems you'll fail if you can't get that much space (which is the why) but how did you determine what it is?The VM uses the perm gen space plus the requested max heap space when attempting the VirtualAlloc call to verify that it can allocate the specified amount. The default perm gen is 64MB, but that can be changed via the -XX:MaxPermSize vm parameter, so I allow for any requested value.
    What's CRUSH_JNI_VERSION? It's not in any .h file I have.That's just my own constant defined to be either JNI_VERSION_1_4 or JNI_VERSION_1_6.
    Why are you messing with the bootclasspath? (I suspect you're adding something to it. Generally the VM can find it's own damn classpath).Yep, I'm adding the 2.1 JAXB jar to the bootclasspath because earlier 1.6 distributions included JAXB 2.0 and I needed 2.1.

  • J2EE 6.40 Custom Login Module - how to config

    hello all,
    i am using WAS J2EE 6.40 Sneak Preview edition. Read all i can find about custom login module, in the forum and the online help. still confused. pls help.
    here is the background info:
    - i am writing a web app. the EAR file contains 5 ejbs, 1 war and bunch of java classes in jars.
    - access to my web app is protected through url pattern (in web.xml), i've defined the same named security role in web.xml and on j2ee engine.
    - my login module does the user name and password checking. both are stored in database through some other means.
    - login is FORM based
    following the discussion in another thread on the topic, i did the following:
    #1 develop my login module code. packaged it in a jar, then sda file. deploy the sda as a llibrary to the engine.
    #2 add my login module to the security store through the security provider service.
    #3 configure my web app to use the custom login module in web-j2ee-engine.xml
    #4 deploy my web app through the ear file
    at this point, in the visual administrator, i can see the library, the custom login module (added to the UME User Store), and also my web app has authentication set to use the custom login module (under policy configurations tab).
    now i try to login to my web app. it correctly complains when i enter non-existent user or wrong password and brings me to the login failed jsp page. but when i enter both correctly (as stored in my database), i get http 403 error code. i know it is 403 because i set that error code to a special jsp page in web.xml.
    question is why? now i create a user on the j2ee engine with the same name as in my user database. then i can login ok. i am confident that my login module is called since i see the println lines in j2ee engine server logs.
    ??? so i must be missing something obvious. is it because my web app is protected through security-role? i even tried removing all such roles, but still same problem.
    ??? or do i completely mis-understand how custom login modules are supposed to work. i thought it means i can authenticate users any way i want without having to use the j2ee engine's user mgmt. pls tell me if i am totally wrong.
    ??? or maybe my login module code is missing some key stmts. how should it tell the j2ee engine that a user is authenticated? in the login() method, it returns true if user name/passwd match. in the commit() method, it adds the principal to the subject. i don't what else is required.
    does anyone have a working scenario using custom login modules?
    thanks very much for your inputs and thoughts.
    wentao

    Hi Astrid,
    I guess I have the same understanding of JAAS as you. I want to deploy an application that internally makes use of JAAS to authenticate users. There is a LoginModule that authenticates users against some database tables containing all the user data and profile. The application was not designed to be deployed to NetWeaver. So it does not make use of UME or some other NetWeaver specific feature. Actually it handles user management and authoroization issues completely on its own. The only reason for having JAAS is to allow customers to plug in their own LoginModule to use some other kind of user store.
    When deploying the web application to a simple servlet engine like Tomcat, all I have to do is to register my LoginModule in the "jaas.conf" file that is parsed by JAAS default implementation. I also tell the JVM where my jaas.conf file is located by appending a "-Djava..." runtime parameter to the JVM startup script.
    When using other application servers like IBM WebSphere things become a bit different. Normally you use the administration GUI of that server to configure your LoginModules. WebSphere for example keeps the login configuration in an internal database rather than writing everything into a "jaas.conf" text file. But the way the application can use the LoginModule is the same as in Tomcat.
    But when it comes to Netweaver, it seems to me that it's not possible to define a LoginModule that your application can use WITHOUT having to couple it tightly to UME. Or did I get something wrong? Initially I've tried to modify the JVM's parameters (using SAP J2EE Config Tool) to include the location of my "jaas.conf" file containing the my login configuration. But that did not work. The parameter was really passed to the JVM but anyway my LoginModule was not found, I guess that NetWeaver has some own implementation of the JAAS interfaces that just ignore the plain text JAAS configuration files (like WebSphere also does).
    The documentation that I have downloaded from SDN doesn't seem to match the 6.4 sneak preview version that I just downloaded some days ago. They say you should deploy your LoginModule as a library and add a refernce to the application. I tried that out but it did not help. The login configuration that the application wants to access is still not found. Actually there seems to be no way to specify the name for a JAAS Login Configuration in NetWeaver. At least I cound not find that in the documentation.
    So basically my question is: is it possible to deploy an application that wants to use some own LoginModule (either deployed separately or together with the application, that does not matter) without making use of Netweaver specific features like UME? The application has its own user management infrastructure and just needs a way to setup a JAAS Login Configuration to access its own LoginModule.
    Thanks in advance

  • Java.lang.OutOfMemoryError - jrockitR27

    Hi all, can anybody help me?
    I am getting in production environment the error below. We have jboss 4.0.4 in virtual machine and 2 tomcat (apache-tomcat-5.5.17) servers in 2 different virtual machines. Between we have load balance also to send the request in 2 tomcats.
    Jboss is running in \jrockit-R27.3.1-jdk1.5.0_11 and tomcat 1 in \jrockit-R27.3.1-jdk1.5.0_11 and the other in \jrockit-R27.3.5-jdk1.5.0_14. Jboss deployment is build in jre6 and tomcat deployment (*.war files) in jdk 1.6.0_22. We have the same environment for test. In test env everything works fine and we did also stress test
    for 50 users and works fine. When we go live we are getting the error bellow, many times and in many screens. I couldn't find any pattern or something similar. Every time is different when tomcat communicated with jboss and also in both tomcats I am getting the same. The out of memory error it is throwing in tomcat. Jboss works fine.
    The strange think is that in the old version of production is working fine, and we did not make a lot of changes. The only thing is that in old version the deployment of the jboss is build in jdk 1.5.0_18 but now it is in jre6. Could someone give me a solution of that? I am thinking that the problwm maybe is that jboss deployment it is in jre6 and jboss is running with jrockit.

    Hi,
    By default, the JVM will use up to 16Mb of RAM. If your program allocates a lot of memory, you may need to increase this value to give more room to the garbage collector.
    When starting the JVM, two parameters can be adjusted to suit your memory needs :
    -mx n Sets the maximum size of the memory allocation pool where n is in bytes, appending "m" to n will
    specified the number in megabytes, for example to set the maximum at 20Mb : java -mx 20m myApp
    . -ms n Sets the startup size of the memory allocation pool, where n is in bytes, appending "m" to n will
    specified the number in megabytes. The default is 1Mb.
    With JDK1.2, that syntax have changed, no space between ms/mx and the value : java -mx20m yourApplication
    And for your your code you can take ehodges suggestion and try profiling your application for memory
    usage and then proceed to change your code so that the memory allocation is better and you are also not
    creating objects unnecessarily
    Hope this helps

  • Oracle Apps 11.5.10.2 Configuration Analysis

    Hi All,
    I have been asked to do a system configuration analysis/review of the Oracle Apps 11.5.10.2 instance for my client. Based on my analysis I need to suggest some improvisation on configuration and bottlenecks in current configuration.
    I have been able to do that for Concurrent Manager and Database.
    I would like to know on how to do such analysis for
    1) Forms Server
    2) Apache Web Server
    Has anyone been involved in such activities, kindly share your experience for this activity.
    Thanks & Regards
