KDE and gtk programs.

Hi. I have a question about gtk programs in KDE. I use kde 4.9 but, i open a few gtk apps like firefox. My question is: opening gtk apps in kde loads gtk librarys to the memory?   librarys remains there while  the computer is turned on?

The GTK library is loaded into memory when you run a GTK application. GTK will stay in memory until you close the GTK application. If you have enough free memory, Linux will keep a library cached in memory so applications startup faster. Linux is smart!
Why do you ask?

  • [SOLVED] Unstable KDE and GTK

I'm using KDEmod and it is not as stable as one would have hoped. I think the problem is mainly with GTK since the instability occurs when I use GTK based apps.
If I use Gimp to edit a photo KDE just crashes after I opened 5 or 6 photos, if I use OpenOffice I get really very sluggish performance. If I execute the same tasks in Fluxbox I have no problems, no glitches, nothing.
I came across this bug when I noticed something odd if I left my computer unattended (idle for a while with only Firefox running) and came back to find KDE had crashed. Since then it has happened all too often to not give it some serious thought now.
Could someone give me some advice as to what to reinstall or how to troubleshoot to be sure what the problem is.

  • Why KDE programs run faster on KDE and slower on GNOME?

    Hello, I have a doubt:
When I run KDE programs on gnome (kaffeine, amarok... in general programs that uses the kdelibs), they take 4 or 5 seconds aproximately to run, and in KDE, they run in only 1 second. But gnome programs run on KDE and GNOME at the same speed.
What's the reason for this difference?
    Greetings

And what programs I need to run if I want to preload all the services for KDE in gnome? Only kdeinit? or there are more programs?

Can you give us some more info? Is this gnome, fluxbox, kde, etc for example? What GTK apps do you mean?
You often have to restart the wm or reload configs etc to get new menu items showing, have you tried that?

Its really a matter of taste, really. KDE is know to be configurable like hell, GNOME very easy to use, and XFCE lightweitgh.
Keep in mind that whatever desktop environment (DE) you choose, you can use any application in any DE. For example, firefox, a "GTK" application, works without problem under KDE. Or Kile, a latex front-end for KDE, works perfect under Gnome.
Personnally I prefer KDE. But I mostly prefer KDE applications like the editors (Kate/Kwrite) and file manager (dolphin).
KDE is slower to start on my EeePC (really small machine) but because it is full featured, I can cut on number of packages installed, so in the end, with the same functionality, I have more room on my disk then using XFCE!
Just try them, and choose the one you like

  • [SOLVED] Problem witch qt4 , KDE and startx

    Hi!
With the recent update of qt4 i had a problem to start X session.
First, i update all with pacman -Syu (qt4 to 4.8.4-11), and then update only qt4 to 4.8.4-12.
A few hours i have a problem to start KDE and show me a message:
Could not start d-bus. Can you call qdbus?
After trying to use the following command:

gnome-session, startkde and startxfce4 will start a D-Bus session automatically if one is not already running. The skeleton file for ~/.xinitrc (/etc/skel/.xinitrc) will do the same. Make sure that your ~/.xinitrc is based on the skeleton file /etc/skel/.xinitrc.
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/D-Bus
    So...
    $ cat /etc/skel/.xinitrc
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    # exec gnome-session
    # exec startkde
    # exec startxfce4
    # ...or the Window Manager of your choice
    ... because ...
    $ ls /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/
    30-dbus 40-libcanberra-gtk-module xdg-user-dirs
That's why dbus is not started.
    EDIT:
As a side note: I strongly suggest using KDM in your case. You can create a session file only for steam and switch to a seperate session with only steam from inside KDE. This will also stop KDE from running, when all you want is steam.

  • Entering symbols in GTK programs

I use the spanish ISO keyboard layout, and I've noticed I cannot enter symbols that require the option key (such as \|@#¢∞{}[]€£) into GTK programs.
If I set the swapAltMeta preference to true, I can get them with the command key, while the option key works for menu and button shortcuts, but I can't type things like £, because that uses the shift key, and command-shift-4 will make a screenshot.
How can I get the option key to work like it does on Mac OS, for entering special characters?

    Could you respond here:

  • [SOLVED] Fluxbox and gtk theme

I have a problem with fluxbox. Some programs using gtk themes (e.g. spacefm, audacious) have ugly grayish 'redmond' look. I have tried to follow this how-to:
    http://wiki.fluxbox.org/index.php?title … gtk_themes
and also tried to switch theme with lxapperance and gtk-chtheme. No success. The gtk-chtheme shows a correct theme, so within the preview the theme is fine. However, it won't change the appearance of other windows. Some other programs like firefox or thunderbird change the theme.
I have also tried to compile spacefm with gtk3 support and use adwaita theme. Again I got the ugly look. In other desktop managers, e.g. lxdm both spacefm and audacious look as expected.

Thanks guys! It must have been something in the .config/gtk-3.0 folder. Once I removed it and created settings.ini like this one:
    [Settings]
    gtk-theme-name = Adwaita
    gtk-icon-theme-name = Tango
    gtk-fallback-icon-theme = gnome
    gtk-font-name = Sans 8
    gtk-auto-mnemonics = 1
    gtk-visible-focus = automatic
I can have a normal appearance of gtk3 applications. Interesting thing is that this is exactly the same settings file I have tried before. Probably something else in the folder was overriding the theme.

  • Openbox and gtk icons

I am having trouble getting openbox to use my gtk icon theme. I have set my .gtkrc-2.0 file, and gtk apps like the gimp use the correct icons. But openbox itself does not use the correct icons in the window titles. Is there some other configuration file I need to change to make openbox use my icon theme?

xs wrote:I just use LxAppearance. Its in the repo's. It sets my icons globally with a single click.
LxAppearance just changes the gtkrc-2.0 file. It does not change the icon set that the window manager uses.
Based on extensive google searches, I think I have a theoretical answer to my problem, though. The problem seems to stem from how programs set their _NET_WM_ICON property. My theory is that some programs look to the gtkrc file to set this icon, and other programs do not.
...If anyone out there does lots of gui programming and could confirm this theory, that would be great

  • KDE and all the apps that come with it

I have a question about the KDE group (and packages) and pardon me if I demonstrate my lack of understanding.
I'm fairly new to using linux as a desktop, although I've been using it (and FreeBSD) as server for quite some time.  So I can get around fairly well with command line, and server based stuff.
I tried many distributions but didnt find one that I got attached to, and was about to go thru a Gentoo install when I discovered Arch.  Since then its been fantastic.  On my home lan I've replaced almost all my windows installations with arch and have not had any major issues.
However, looking at the slick way that pacman works, with all the little packages I can choose from and the dependancy chain figured out for me, I was a little dissapointed that KDE comes with a dozen or so packages that contain 100s of apps.   For instance, I am pretty sure I dont need KBabel (a translator), yet I cannot install it thru pacman because it isnt in its own package, it is in kdeaddons.   I REALLY like the idea of having a KDE group that would install everything that it currently does, but why have so many apps inside that group of packages?
I took a little look at the kde website and didnt really see anything in there that indicated that KBabel is part of an actual kdeaddons package there, so I am assuming that the kde maintainer for arch decided that it should be that way.
I dont know any better, so thats why I am asking.   I dont have a need for a fax viewer, a tea cooker, or a moon phase thingo.  but I did like the AMOR to amuse the kids a little. So how can I keep one bit and get rid of the others, without having to dig thru stuff and possibly break the dependancy chain?
Anyway, not to take away from the effort of those maintaining the packages, because it works quite well and I'm really enjoying my new systems.  Just wanted to ask if there was a specific reason it was done this way.
    Kudos.

    skparkes wrote:
Well, as it stands, no you can't just pick individual apps in KDE.  If you really want to pick what you want, you will have to turn to building from source.  You can probably alter kdeaddons in ABS, or just start with Konstruct.
Personally, I understand why they just lump all of kde into 5-10 packages.  It would be a complete headache otherwise.  I've got the hard drive space and I can handle a few unused applications laying around.  Keep up the good work to the new KDE maintainer eh?
    Later,
    Isamoor
That's probably the exact reason. There's probably around 100+ programs (I could be under or over by a lot, it just seems like there are a ton) that come with a fully installed KDE, and if you had to install them all individually, it'd be hell. It's just easier to put them all together into a few packages, because most people'll probably want to use KDE's stuff within the KDE environment, anyway.

  • Gnome splash screen and gtk-apps in awesome huge fonts.

    Hi all,
I installed awesome wm the other day and for some reason all GTK-apps have huge fonts. GDM and the gnome splash screen have the same issue. I'm thinking this is a DPI issue but I wouldn't know where to start looking. Could someone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks.

In the meantime I swapped over to KDEMOD again, but I am still not satisfied. I prefer a mix of QT and GTK+ applications, and whatever I tried, they just do not look the same if running them in KDE or XFCE4.
Maybe I should try running a WM instead of a DE, after some reading I am very tempted to go for Openbox.
Can somebody running just a WM comment on the results, when mixing QT & GTK+ apps?
I use Openbox and don't have any ugly looking apps. Granted, I think the only QT app I use is opera though

  • Kmenu and GTK-QT "linking"

I'm new in KDE world, and I've already got two problems:

tony5429 wrote:I installed qtcurve-kde4 and changed the widget style and window style but Firefox still looks ugly... Am I missing something?
You need to install qtcurve-kde4, qtcurve-gtk2, and gtk-chtheme.  They are all small packages.
Then... after choosing qtcurve in the Styles section of your KDE settings, run gtk-chtheme as regular user from a konsole and pick qtcurve as your style for gtk apps.
You'll need to close and reopen any gtk apps that were already running for the changes to show up.

  • What is difference between report programming and dialog programming?

    hi,
what is difference between report programming and dialog programming? plz provide some example code
    bye

    ABAP programming
Basically reports are used to read database and represent the results in lists.
Reports are collections of processing blocks that the system calls depending on events.
We can use reports to evaluate data from database tables.
Reports are stand alone programs and controlled by events.
A report itself never creates events
    steps in report:
    Processing the selection screen
    Reading the database
Evaluating the data and creating lists
    Outputting a list.
1st u write simple logics, after that u can enhance the code as step by step.

    Dialog Programming
    Structure of a Dialog Program
A dialog program consists of the following basic components:
    Screens (dynpros)
Each dialog in an SAP system is controlled by dynpros. A dynpro (DYnamic PROgram) consists of a screen and its flow logic and controls exactly one dialog step. The flow logic determines which processing takes place before displaying the screen (PBO-Process Before Output) and after receiving the entries the user made on the screen (PAI-Process After Input).
The screen layout fixed in the Screen Painter determines the positions of input/output fields, text fields, and graphical elements such as radio buttons and checkboxes. In addition, the Menu Painter allows to store menus, icons, pushbuttons, and function keys in one or more GUI statuses. Dynpros and GUI statuses refer to the ABAP/4 program that control the sequence of the dynpros and GUI statuses at runtime.
    ABAP/4 module pool
Each dynpro refers to exactly one ABAP/4 dialog program. Such a dialog program is also called a module pool, since it consists of interactive modules. The flow logic of a dynpro contains calls of modules from the corresponding module pool. Interactive modules called at the PBO event are used to prepare the screen template in accordance to the context, for example by setting field contents or by suppressing fields from the display that are not needed. Interactive modules called at the PAI event are used to check the user input and to trigger appropriate dialog steps, such as the update task.
All dynpros to be called from within one transaction refer to a common module pool. The dynpros of a module pool are numbered. By default, the system stores for each dynpro the dynpro to be displayed next. This dynpro sequence or chain can be linear as well as cyclic. From within a dynpro chain, you can even call another dynpro chain and, after processing it, return to the original chain.
