KDEmod 4.1 composite effects

I just recently installed a new arch with kdemod 4.1 and when I enable the desktop effects from the system settings they don't actually turn on. I'm running the latest nvidia beta drivers from AUR but I also tried it with the older ones that are just in the standard repos.
Section "Module"
Load           "ddc"  # ddc probing of monitor
    Load           "dbe"
    Load           "extmod"
    Load           "glx"
    Load           "bitmap" # bitmap-fonts
    Load           "freetype"
    Load           "record"
Thats a section from my xorg.conf, I took dri out like the wiki said. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
Thanks

yep, I already followed thos instructions, but no luck. I'm using a nvidia 8800gt
[EDIT] I forgot to mention that if I change the compositing type from opengl to Xrender, it works, but its far to slow.

  • MythTV Program Guide Slow/No Composite Effects On Dual Monitor

    Hello all,
I am not entirely sure where this would belong, so I put it here.
I am running Arch64 with an NVidia 8600GTS and dual monitors as seperate X screens. The second monitor is actually a TV not a monitor, and is using the S-Video output on the video card, but I'm not sure that that's relevant at all.
On my primary monitor the program guide in MythTV runs fairly decent, however on the TV it runs unbearably slow. Pushing up on the remote a time or two will take a minute or so to happen. I have it set to the least demanding level possible.
I originally thought that this was just a MythTV issue but I noticed that XCompmgr and Compiz-Fusion effects do not work at all on the TV either, so I think these issues are related.
Also, I do not currently have a composite window manager installed, I am using Gnome with Metacity.
Here is a copy of my xorg.conf:

It's a bit of a mess at the moment. Last time I reinstalled I was having trouble with the keyboard and mouse not working in Gnome, so I've been hesitant to mess with it too much.
On my previous install my xorg.conf looked like this:

I had the same issues with composite managers and that MythTV guide using this xorg.conf too.
Has anyone had any similar issues? I am at a total loss here, so any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

No one else has had troubles with the program guide or composite effects on dual monitors?

  • Compositing effects.

I'm practicing compositing effects with FCP. I'm using some explosions and muzzle flashes for example. When I place the effects in the right position and use the composite mode "screen" it leaves a soft white square and you can see that I re-sized the effects and made them smaller. I'm wondering if there is a way to get rid of that left over white screen and isolate the explosion only?
    thanks

  • Video tearing with transparency (composite) effects

    - Arch Linux i686.
    - Nouveau open source drivers (but the exact same happens with the official nvidia drivers).
    - Openbox.
    - Xcompmgr (same with cairo-compmgr).
    Athlon II x2 250 (3.0 GHz), socket AM3.
    Nvidia Geforce 7025 (onboard).
    2 GB DDR3 RAM (1333 MHz).
SMPlayer and VLC, with "gl", "gl2", etc., nothing works. I have read many many (MANY) reports of Nvidia cards not working with composite effects. My current (ghetto-ass) solution is to click/right click the clock from Tint2 to "pkill" and start xcompmgr. I have also added to the right click menu its own "Composite Effects ON/OFF" category, but I don't use it as much.
    What would you recommend?
Edit: I was thinking maybe start SMPlayer with a script that first kills xcompmgr, then restarts it if the application closes. Can it also be done if I press the pause/stop buttons or I exit fullscreen mode? Like monitoring the application activity/log/output/etc and killing-starting xcompmgr accordingly.

I'm asking about it, to figure out if this is a universal problem and something apple is probably working on as a fix for everyone, or something isolated to either a few bad video cards, or a generation of bad video cards, and is something a new Nvidia card would fix.
Applecare is unable to give me any information on it. And I dont want to send my computer in for service for a week or two and end up with the same problem.

  • [SOLVED] Alt+Tab window switcher in KDE4.4 - no compositing effects

It's just one of these small nagging things: I cannot get the Alt+Tab window switcher to display a cover flow effect in KDE4.4. Compositing works well otherwise - present windows, the rotating cube etc. Only the window switcher keeps showing me a boring vertical list of thumbnails.
I've tried with a new user - same story.
Has anyone else seen this and/or heard of a fix?
It used to work in 4.3 (TM)

    @ploub: thanks - that worked.
It turns out that if you change the settings in Window behaviour / Navigate through windows, they get updated in Desktop / Desktop Effects / All Effects / Focus. However, if you enable a setting in the latter area (as was done in 4.3), nothing happens.
An interesting choice of user interface design: create an additional place for the user to modify certain settings, keep the original place and make the latter not work.

  • Composite effect don't start automatically with KDE4

    hi,
so far so good my new Arch + KDE4 is running pretty stable, pretty good and wonderfully fast. However I have this [minor] issue of Compositte effect don't starting automatically with KDE4 log-on, I need to press Ctrl+Shit+F12 twice to activate it after all applications and Nepomuk loads or else I'll have a Plasma crash - which will reload itself with no significant issue to system stability.
KDE installed are plain KDE packages, not meta and my video card is a ATI HD5750 running latest 10.4-beta catalyst driver.

Some preferences are no longer there. Someone has posted a way to use Terminal to get the missing preferences. Check this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1706604&tstart=105

  • I want to use a customized photoshop button with my composition and have rollover effect

I'm trying to place a photoshop button into a blank composition widget trigger. When I cut a paste the image into the trigger it looses its fuctionality and no longer switches colors during rollover. It works fine in the lightbox composition, but the problem with lightbox composition is that it does not have rollover options to display the target only click. How do I get around this problem. I want to have my own customized button with the composition effect within muse cc.

You should check the design layout and states defined for the trigger , if the state is defined properly then it should show the rollover state, but the target container corresponding to the trigger is on the page then it would show you the active state not the rollover state.
    Thanks,

  • [SOLVED] Xfce composite settings are not respected

I have come across a problem with the Xfce composite manager. I enable this primarily to have conky draw transparently on the desktop wallpaper, but then found shadows and transparency did not cause much more impact on performance after enabling composite effects in the first place.
But now I'm experiencing that some settings in the Tweaks settings menu are not respected. For instance, I've enabled transparency both when moving and resizing windows, but they only turn transparent when moving them. Also, I've enabled transparency for notifications, which to my understanding includes the desktop right-click menu, but they are opaque. Anybody else experience this? I've tried turning composite effects off, logging out and back in and turning them on again. No luck there. Also, if you should know where these settings are stored (text file somewhere/Xconf...) I'd be happy to inspect them
    Thank you!

stqn wrote:Uh? I really don't see why the desktop right-click menu would be using notifications' opacity setting... Anyway here it works as expected (notifications are transparent, not the menu.)
Now it does for me as well. The reason I thought the menu was a part of it was because it became transparent when I enabled notification transparency the first time but this behaviour went away after a logoff-login I think.
The big problem I'm struggeling with now is still the fact that xfwm does not respect the settings as found in Xfconf / Settings -> Tweaks. The shadows on the borders won't go away no matter what I do; however and I'm able to turn off the resize/move transparency in-session. When I log out and back in again, the behaviour reverts, although the settings as I set them remain unchanged =_=
If anything, does anybody know how to return all of xfwm's settings to the default, so I can start over? All I really need compositing for is transparent conky anyways....
EDIT: Okey, it seems this has something to do with the xfwm theme I use :s after switching to other themes in the list I am suddenly in control of the composite effects again... Does this mean that the theme I use stores info on what composite effects it should use??

  • [svn:fx-gumbo_beta2] 10484: Fix for autoCenter problem when Move/ Resize effects are used.

    Revision: 10484
    Author:   [email protected]
    Date:     2009-09-21 19:38:14 -0700 (Mon, 21 Sep 2009)
    Log Message:
Fix for autoCenter problem when Move/Resize effects are used. autoCenterTransform calculates the center dynamically, using the current width/height of the target. This calculation can be one frame off if a Resize effect is running in parallel with the transform effect. Also, containers do their validation lazily, so they need to be forced to validate in order to have an up-to-date width/height. This fix addresses these problems by reordering the effects in a Parallel hierarchy to put the Resize effects (and composite effects containing Resize) at the front of the set of effects and by calling validateNow() on the target of a transform effect prior to calculating the transform center (if appropriate).

  • Nvidia 8400GS Dualhead: KDE Compositing

    Hello,
    maybe somebody can help me:
I have to monitors connected to my Nvdida Geforce 8400 GS. The actual driver nvidia ist installed (nvidia 256.35-1).
I am not able to activate the KDE compositing effects when having both monitors connected. In another forum I've read, that Xinerama must be deactivated to use compositing with the nvidia driver and dual monitor setup.
So I deactivated Xinerama and activated TwinVIew instead. This works so far, but the right monitor (resolution 1024x768, connected to the VGA-port) is virtually placed left to the other monitor (1680x1050, connected to the DVI-port). This is annoying because the mouse has to be moved to the left side of the left monitor to get to the right monitor.
If I try to change this in the ServerLayout-Section of my 20-nvidia.conf, it has no effect. If I change Screen 1 to Screen 0, X won't start.
    Here is my actual 20-nvidia.conf:
    Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "DualSreen"
    Screen 0 "Screen0"
    Screen 1 "Screen1" RightOf "Screen0"

  • Making a Realistic Composite

Hey, I was hoping to get some feedback on techniques to achieve a specific shot and effect.
I am going to shoot some video of a book opening, the video has to be on the page and the page will turn. How would you achieve this using Motion?
I could motion track the page turn and apply it to the video layer however I am not sure if this would work and I have never done it before so any feedback on this issue would be great.
Thanks again guys. Keep up the good work. Jim.

I don't think he's trying to animate a page flip in Motion, David. I think he's talking about compositing video atop the page. I don't see how that would be accomplished with fishing line.
As for the composite effect, this is really difficult to pull off for a number of reasons. For one, I doubt you'd be able to get any tracking info that would automate this process sufficiently because of the XYZ rotation and skew of the page. Your best bet is to manually keyframe the effect. In all likelyhood, you'll need to mask the video as well as adjust it's position and rotation because when a page flips, it bows in a way that can't be mimicked by a 2D planar image. With an animated mask that more or less follows the contours of the page, you can cheat the effect pretty convincingly, provided the flip isn't too slow.

  • Xorg memory usage.

    Hi there.
I am new to linux and have just recently performed another clean install of arch linux onto my system. I was just wanting find out why after running my system for about 4 hours my xorg server memory usage increased from about 30MB to 1.5GB? I dont think this is normal behaviour.
    My system is
    Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
    4GB DDR2 1067Mhz
    Nvidida Gefore 8800GTX
    running
    Archlinux 64-bit
    with xorg-server 1.7.3.902-1
    and KDEmod4
btw, my system is entirely up to date. If needed I will move my post to the KDEmod forums, but im unsure of the likeliness that kdemod is the cause. Thanks in advance.

    Dunno about the Nvidia one.
That would explain mine, I use the xf86-video-ati from the repos and use some compositing effects.
So do I but even after deactivating compositing the problem still seems to be there.

  • Xf86-video-ati with S.Islands - do you like it?

    Hi!
Some times ago I tried to use xf86-video-ati driver for my ATI AMD Radeon HD7870 card and it was not really comfortable due to hight card temperature even without hight video load.
Now we have xorg-server and catalyst-utils in conflict, so I am wondering should I try open source drivers again to keep system up to date. I do not need 3d, only composite effects, video and low temperature. May be now situation is better with S.I. support.
Is there any S.I. cards users with xf86-video-ati driver? What card do you have? Do you satisfied with composite and 2d performance with kwin and KDE? What is the temperature of your card? Right now I have 36 degrees without load according to aticonfig --odgt.
P.S. At first I thought I can just try xf86-video-ati for myself, but because of package conflict it will be now not so easy to go back. I would like not to deal with custom repos and/or package downgrades.

I would wait at least another month to see what gets revealed (if anything) to the macbook product line. With the WIFI drops associated with current release I cannot recommend anything until then.
I would love to have a new macbook if it had an aluminum chassis like the Pro.
If you remember, they used to have the little 13" aluminum G4 which was a sweet little machine.

  • [Solved] Random Freezes Requiring Manual Power off

Since I built this system, I've been getting random freezes that force me to have to manually power off and back on the entire system.  I have no idea what's causing it and I've tried everything under the sun that I can think of to resolve it to no avail.  I posted about this a while back in another forum, but I'm hoping I'll have better luck here.
    Symptoms:
Entire system will completely freeze.  No input is recognized, keyboard controls do not function (numlock, caps lock, etc.), cannot switch to another TTY, nothing.  There appears to be no rhyme or reason to when the freezes occur.  Sometimes the machine will be sitting idle and freeze in the middle of the night and I'll come in in the morning and find it frozen, other times I'll be in the middle of using it and it will freeze (as just happened).  Every time I have to hold down the power button to shut off, then turn it back on.
    What I've tried so far:
    Swapping out all the RAM
Completely wiping the entire system and re-installing from the ground up (twice now I've done this)
Unplugging various USB devices and seeing if leaving those unplugged helps (it does not).
I'm at my wits end.  This has been going on for months and I have no idea what to do at this point. This is the most stumped I've ever been.
The thing that drives me the most nuts is that I have an almost *identical* system at home (the one that's freezing is my work computer).  Same CPU, same motherboard, same SSD partitions and layout, virtually the exact same software installed as well.  The only differences are a different GPU, different band of RAM, different brand of SSD, and a different case.  The specs from my home computer are in my signature and I can provide exact hardware info on the work system if anyone thinks it'll help.
I'm willing to provide whatever information anyone can suggest to help troubleshoot the issue.  I've got a bunch of log output from journalctl from various times it's crashed, but I haven't been able to make sense of it with regards to finding patterns or useful troubleshooting information.  Below is the most recent log from a few minutes before and after the crash.  You'll see the reboot at 17:51:40
    (sudo journalctl --since 17:45:00)

My thinking is that Plasma is not "playing" nicely with nvidia, I have two systems in my pc, one with kde4 and the other one (my testing system) with plasma, kde4 runs as it should, no lags, no freezes, no redrawing problems, fast and smooth. My plasma system is really not there, I tweak both systems the same, 20-nvidia.config on the xorg.d folder created by the nvidia settings, same where I also tweak all settings to juice my video card to its fullest (a really weak one by the way, a fanless gt430) and the triple buffering enabled for kde. I do have freezes with Plasma that lock the whole system, no keyboard input, and its been more or less the same since its release (for me that is), I am keep waiting to see if the "next" release would do, 5.3 still not yet. I also notice that compositing effects makes things worst, for example, snapping a window to a corner or to maximize when wobbly effect is on is a sure shot for a freeze for my system, I just update today the linux kernel and the nvidia driver, would see if that helps a little. My advice, for a stable system stick to kde4 still.
Edit: Note, I have a good old amd phenom 6 cores and I always run it with some over-clocking, never have issues with that on my previous install or my main system.
