Keeping an application session open

Internet Sales (ISA) integrated in the portal.
The problem we're currently facing is the following:
We integrated the ISA application into the portal, we are using the SSO and this works just fine. We're trying to maintain or basket contenence even when we are clicking on another link in the portal.
This would effectively mean, according to me, to keep the ISA session open and when we click on the link to the ISA again not to open a new session but work on in the current one.
We've tried to put the variable in web.xml for re-enabling cookies to true but this was not the solution.
Ideas anyone?

Hi Allan,
Well navigating away from the page will invoke the DSM terminator and the portal will try to close the session to the ISA server. Is opening the shop in another window an option for you? This might be a good work around in your scenario?
cheers,

  • Best practice for keeping a mail session open in web application?

    Hello,
We have a webmail like application where users login with their IMAP credentials, then are taken to an authenticated area of the site where they can manage different things about their email account.
Right now the application is opening and closing a mail store connection (via a new javax.mail.Session) for each page load based on the current logged in user credentials. To me this seems like it would be a bad practice to keep opening and closing a connection each page load.
Are there any best practices for this situation? It would be nice to be able to open the connection to the mail server on login, then keep that connection open until the person logs out, session expires, etc.
I can probably put the javax.mail.Session into the HTTP session, but that seems like it would break any clustering functionality of tomcat. This would be fine if the machine the user is on didn't fail, but id assume if they failed over to another the mail session would be gone. Maybe keeping the mail session in the http session, checking for a connection, then first attempting to reconnect with the logged in credentials before giving up would be a possiblity?
    Any pointers would be appreciated

If you keep the connection open across pages, you're going to need to deal with
timeouts - from the http session and from the mail server.
If you don't keep the connection open, you're going to need to "resynchronize"
your view of the store/folder with each operation, in case the folder is modified
    by another session.
The former is easier in the common cases, especially if you don't care how gracefully
you handle failures. The latter is more difficult in the common cases, but handles
failure better, and in particular handles clustering better. You'll need to measure it to
see if it meets your performance and scalability requirements. You may need to mix
the two approaches to get acceptable performance.

  • How to keep dvd burn session open

When i backup my photos for storage onto a DL DVD or on any cd/dvd the burner closes the session after the burn. Are there settings that can be changed to allow a burn session to remain open so i'm not wasting storage space?

There is nothing remotely resembling a standard for multi-session DVDs. That is probably why Apple provides no option for this at all.
The other poster included a link to instructions on how to make a multi-session CD. Those instructions won't work for a DVD.

  • Using LabVIEW 6i w Win NT or 95/98 et al: how do you keep a TCP/IP open connection 'open'. The application closes the connection even though the refnum is still active (valid.)

Actually, I open the TCP/IP connection and pass the connection ID through. Each command to/from (cycle) the UUT successfully executes. The refnum for the connection ID is then passed via a shift register in the while loop. i am using the type cast (4X) function to determine the validity of the connection and case statements. If the refnum is non-zero it assumes the connection is still open; if the result is zero, then the connection is closed and a new session opened in that case. What is happening is that the connection has closed and the refnum is still nonzero after the type cast function; su
bsequent commands to the UUT then produce Error 1 for the TCP/IP function (there was no open connection, so there could be no write occurrence.) Obviously, this probably shouldn't be happening. If someone can give me some idea of what I am not doing, or am doing wrong, I sure would appreciate it. In the event that I open and close a connection for each command to(from)(cycle) the UUT everything works. It is extremely slow. The connection should remain open according to all the pointers in the Help and TCP/IP function descriptions. Some of this application is proprietary, so not sure how much of an example I could use to illustrate from a VI, but if this doesn't get any where, I will see what i can do to better illustrate the problem...Thanks. T.Raper

I believe this is a related question. I am developing a LV application the uses TCP/IP to control up to 8 devices-under-test (DUT) at one time. They start and finish testing at arbitrary times relative to each other, and the IP addresses are not known until the DUT arrives. I have some question on what is the best way to manage the TCP/IP handles.
Presently, I have 8 Global IP addresses (one per testing site) that are updated as DUTs arrive and depart, and then whenever I need to communicate with a DUT I use TCP-Open, Write/Read, and TCP-Close. I do this Open/Write/Close each time there is a message to be sent to a DUT. This is basically working, but I notice that the OS (Windows XP or 2000) is running through local TCP/IP ports at a ferocious rate due to the TIME_WAIT behavior of Closed TCP/IP ports (It takes many minutes for a local port to become available again after being closed). If I am not careful, I can quickly exhaust the pool of OS ports by using tight polling loops or other very quick DUT accesses. I have tried not to do that in order to avoid running out of handles, but it is still very wasteful of ports.
While it is working, I feel so dirty burning through these handles like this since they appear to be a precious resource. I really cannot easily merge multiple Read/Writes into a single Open/Close since there are dozens of otherwise unrelated tests that communicate with the DUT as a part of their functionality. The tests are even in different subVI's that are accessed via a vi-server, and only one is loaded at a time.
I thought that a cute idea would be to cache the handles in Globals, and wrap the Open to use the cache if valid, but reading this thread is making me think it is a lot of effort -- I believe I would need to keep a VI running as a "IP Connection Server" at all times and use some form of messaging to get it to Open/Close TCP connections as needed. Since the DUTs arrive at aribitrary times, and with random IP addresses, I cannot establish all the TCP handles ahead of time -- they would need to be created dynamically. It is much more difficult than simply keeping the Connection IDs in global variables -- the VI that Opened them must not be allowed to terminate.
So... I am curious...... is it really that bad to Open/Close as frequently as I am doing it? Does it make me a bad person? I understand it is inefficient use of time, but the simplicity it brings to the structure seems huge, and the DUT is very slow anyway. And if it is bad, are they any more recent thoughts on alternatives? Do VISA handles behave the same way as TCP handles (ie. auto-close themselves upon exit of the VI that Opened them) ?

  • I like to keep 2 sessions open, but today a new session opens with blank page and no bookmarks - why?

I keep a session open pretty much all day but minimize it when I leave so someone else can use a session for whatever they want. Today when I open a new session (while mine is minimized) the page is blank and there are no bookmarks. I can hit the home icon and go to view and see my bookmarks but this is a pain

    Hey mate,
I was having the same problem. If you upgraded to Lion - apparently there is a 'general tab' in the system preferences that has a box that you need to un check. (The box says something about restoring all last windows from last session)
If you updated Safari but are not using Lion, here is how to fix it. Simply delete this item fromyour Mac HD and restart Safari.
    [USERHOME]/library/preferences/com.apple.safari.plist
Hope this helps... It worked for me!

  • HFM Web Sever Configuration--Keep Alive and Session Time Out Optimal Config

We recently implemented an HFM 9.3.1 environment. We are using Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2 servers with IIS6. We have two HFM Web servers connecting to an application cluster with two application servers in the cluster. We were getting some errors when trying to unlock HFM cells in Workspace, but we were able to perform the functions fine on the application using the WIN32 client.
I opened a ticket with support and they recommended modifying the subcontext.properties file located in %HYPERION_HOME%\deployments\WebLogic9\servers\Workspace\webapps\workspace\conf. They recommended changing the following settings:
    #KeepAliveInterval=30
    #SessionTimeout=60
From what I understand, these settings are for the communication between the HFM Web Servers and the application cluster servers. I'm wondering how changing these settings may affect our environment. Are there negative effects and/or trade-offs for changing these settings? Is there a recommended threshold or maximum value?

    Hi Dinesh,
This cannot be achieved without development enhancements to some standard SAP framework component, to introduce a "keep-alive" concept. If you are using a CMS for CTI or email integration, you need to ensure it supports keeping the communications session alive also.

  • How do I install Snow Leopard while keeping files, applications, and settings

I need to update my system, I realized that I need Snow Leopard (quiet late) before Maverick. My question is, how can I install it keeping files and all the data. I found this on Internet, does it work?
Install Snow Leopard while keeping files, applications, and settings
If you follow these steps, the installer will replace your operating system if one is already present, but will preserve your account information and personal files.  You may have to reinstall some applications, however.
Insert the install disc (or the first install disc if you have more than one) into your disc drive. Restart your computer while holding down the c key. This causes your computer to start up from the install disc rather than your hard drive. When you see the gray Apple insignia, release c .
The Mac OS X installer should open automatically. Follow the on-screen prompts to read and accept the license agreement and begin the installation. When prompted to choose a destination disk, select your preferred location and click Install.
When the Mac OS X installation finishes with the disc, restart your computer. After the installation completes, a configuration program may begin automatically if you are installing for the first time. You will need to supply basic setup information for your computer.
Update your system software to ensure that you have the most recent operating system components.  From the Apple menu, select Software Update... , and then follow the instructions on the screen. Often, you will have to restart your computer, and you may have to run Software Update multiple times before it can completely update your system.

That's why you need to back it up. You won't need to restore the backup immediately afterwards unless something goes wrong during the upgrade, but you'll need it later; the drive will eventually fail.

In previous Window versions when one opened applications such as word, excel or browser or snipping tool these applications stayed on top.
However, in windows 8.1 now when ne application is openned, one needs to minize other applications before starting to use it.  This is very non productive use of time and prevents swtiching between dpendent application, open version of documents, and

Please provide suggestions how to configure the system to enable latest application on top.

  • How to keep alive a session in Web Services?

I have to do my project, that will be including some following features:
    1. Login to Application through Web Services method. For example:
    http://mydomain.com/web-services/Login?WSDL
    2. After logging in, use mySms method to send message to Cellphone through Web Services! For example:
    http://mydomain.com/web-services/mySms?WSDL
    My questions are:
    1. How can I keep alive the session after logging in the application in Web Services? In Web, I can use "Session".
    2. If someone has not logged in the Application, he/she could not use mySms method for sending Sms. How can I do that?
    3. I know, when I invoke a Web Services, one JavaBean has been called, and this bean is persistence with his own states. It means, if I set value to parameters of this bean, these values are persistence for invoked methods by other persons.
    For example:
mySms bean has a private field "jid" inited with NULL value.
    Person A invoked mySms.
Then, A set jid of mySms to value "A".
Person B invoked mySms. B got jid value. He receive the result value is "A".
The question is, how can I set mySms bean so that mySms bean is not persistence?
    Thanks many!

    Hi,
I can right away answer your FIRST Question.
Since WebServices are PURELY Based on SOAP which is in tern based on HTTP, they rely on a Stateless protocol.
I am sure you know that the HTTP is the STATELESS Protocol and so you can not maintain Session and so EACH Http REQUEST is considered as a SEPERATE REQUEST.
Now, still you want to maintain the Session in WebServices,
The simple answer is PASSING PARAMETERS.
Just Maintain your Session on Client (If you are using JSPs or Servlets to CAll WEBSERVICES then maintain Session through your HTTPSession) and each time you Invoke WebService PASS ON REQUIRED Parameters.
This Approach is Exactly like your URL REWriting OR your Parameters Passing through QUERY STRINGS.
I hope you got what I am saying!
    Take care,
    Himanshu/
