Kernel Compile error
can someone look at http://members.aol.com/trekboy07/vmware.jpg I am getting kernel compile errors and i am doing everything in the FAQ. what i do is i untar the file from the arch 4.0 cd into /usr/src/linux-2.4.20 and run make menuconfig take file from /usr/abs/base/kernel make some changes and replace it, and run "makepkg" i have done this in VMWare and on a Thinkpad 600 and get the same errors.
thanks for the help
It seems like you bumped into a little bug in the linux kernel (at least, that's what google says, see the top link at http://groups.google.com/groups?q=undef … htool_gset )
I already sent a patch for this for 2.5 but I didn't know the problem
also exists in 2.4. The following patch fixes it:

Anyone else having / had similar problems or can otherwise shed some light?I wouldn't think that it would be a problem with any of the Parallels kexts, as I'm running Parallels 8 (make sure you've the latest version) using Mountain Lion and Windows 7 Pro... but you may want to hunt down these two kexts:
com.jft.driver.PdaNetDrv 1.0.64
at.obdev.nke.LittleSnitch 2.4.0
...and put them out of harms way and then reboot and see if you're still getting the kernel panics. LittleSnitch may be OK - I don't use it - but I've no idea what the PdaNetDrv is...

I checked few forums for this and have set XL.CompilerPath to jdk/bin. Also, JAVA_HOME has been set to jdk6 (not bin).
Please provide some pointers for resolution.
Thanks,
RahulThanks Rajiv. I, in fact, did same for resolution as there was a reference to a directory in logs under /tmp but I wasn't able to find it. Cleaning up /tmp did the trick.

1g lowmem?
Many machines now have exactly 1Gb ram and the standard memory split on i386 does not allow you to use more than 896Mb ram without enabling high memory for at least 4Gb. The problem is that this incurs an overhead whereas we can simply change this split with this patch to allow i386 architectures to use up to 1Gb ram without enabling highmem. This is configurable if HIGHMEM is disabled.
I also don't know if his old patches have the patch or if the current will work on the 2.4 kernel..
Just looked around and found the 2.4 are now Ick patchset and i don't see that... CK does have a server patch... If anything just get the 2.6 CK server patchset... 2.6 is stable, but how am I to say I've only used 2.6... Go with 2.6 ck server.

i really want a huge kernel space, and i can't find the 4G kernel space vm patch for 2.4 at these links

Issue after kernel compilation
I've compiled my own kernel based on the arch linux default kernel its configuration file. I simply executed make clean && make dep && make modules && make bzImage && make modules_install. Afther the depmod I've built a ramdisk with mkinitcpio.Unfortunately I'm not able to boot into my new self-compiled kernel. Here you can see my /boot/grub/menu.lst:
# (0) Arch Linux Self-compiled kernel
title Linux 2.6.30.5 [/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.30.5]

initrd /kerneltest.img
# (0) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux [/boot/vmlinuz26]
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 ro
initrd /kernel26.img
While booting into the new kernel the next error message about the root device shows up. I've noticed I'm able to boot the default arch kernel that's using the same root device (=/dev/sda3) on this desktop.
Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/sda3
Root device /dev/sda3 doesnt exist, attempting to create it
Error: Failed to parse block device ids for /dev/sda3

/dev/sda1 /boot ext2 defaults 0 1
/dev/sda2 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/sda3 / ext4 defaults 0 1

Who can help me with this issue? Thanks.
Last edited by Nando (2009-09-05 15:40:04)I've compiled a new kernel but the same issue remains. I executed some important changes in my kernel config: CONFIG_SCSI=y, CONFIG_ATA=y, CONFIG_EXT4_FS=y (instead of being modular as in the default arch linux kernel). I also inserted the "aufs" lines, but they were gone in my .config file after the kernel compilation.(I think it was after make dep)
A "diff" of both .config reveals that aufs is almost the only difference. (I've already mentioned the stuff that used to be modular and is now built-in.)

Custom kernel SuperBlock error Please Help!!
Hello,
I have Arch linux installed on a virtual machine for a class project where we are required to hack the kernel. I have successfully modified the linux kernel 2.6.28 code, compiled and booted with the custom kernel. This morning I made the last final changes to the code, recompiled, but when I boot I am greeted with:
The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2
filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2
filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock
is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:
The Arch kernel boots fine however. There were no errors during kernel compilation. Any thoughts/suggestions.Thanks for the reply, yes this is after grub and no it is not ext2, it is ext3. I ran into this problem on another virtual machine after several kernel builds so I did a fresh install of Arch and the kernel build (along with booting the new kernel) was fine.
Note this:
The last time I compiled my kernel (virtual machine 1) I did rm -rf * on /usr/src, copied my kernel stuff into /usr/src and did the compile got the ext2 error, however, the Arch kernel was fine.
On the second virtual machine, I was in a major hurry so I copied my kernel stuff into /usr/src compiled, everything was fine. Went back into the code, made some changes recompiled got the ext2 error the Arch kernel again was fine.
I realized on these last two builds, I didn't create the symlinks
# ln -s /usr/src/linux-2.6.28 /usr/src/linux

any help appreciated. I know its out of date and everything, but this seems to be a compiler error, not a package thing? or i'm just wrong. Don't just suggest splashy either, thats not what i want - i'm trying to get a background on my terminal. Sorry for the grumpy tone, but i've been battling with this and trawling the web for about 5 hours now, and its 1am...it compiled, but i get the same kernel panic when i use this on the end of my boot line:
splash=verbose,theme:darch console=tty1
And the error is:
kinit: nuking initramfs contents, directory not empty
Kernel Panic - not syncing: attempted to kill init
Also, just trying to run "/etc/rc.d/fbsplash start" gives me "line 6: splash_check not found"
again, any help appreciated. -
Kernel Compile how not to do it !!!! [FXx]
EDIT I would like to say kernel compile problem was my fault.... I should have moved it then compiled 2.6.5-3 (gcc3.4) I will in future use /usr/src (improve my CLI skills)
I am sorry for posting but this old boy gets in muddle sometimes & I like to think out loud.
After several mugs of tea & reading posts I now have kernel 2.6.5-3 Xfee4.4 & nvidia working again (well for a couple of hours till 2.6.6 !!!)
pacman -Af
Many thanks again for all your help

Can't run petalinux-build without a compiler error
Hello,
I've been trying to follow the TDR 2014.4 PetaLinux rebuild and am hitting an error with the compiler trying to locate a header file. I suspect it is a environment issue although I've tried all the tips I've scoured off groups on the internet like petalinux-build -x distclean, etc.
Here is the output of petalinux-build -v around the compiler error and I've attached the build.log file for review as well as a copy of my environment variables.

Can someone please help me to resolve this issue?
My 2014.4 PetaLinux petalinux-build runs succeed with the attached kernel config. However if I then just make this single line change to the attached config:
CONFIG_CFG80211=y
then the build fails with the message below. I've burned many hours trying to get around this because as it is I'm unable to ass the kernel features I need. :(

Compiler errors with most recent update
I just ran the SoftwareUpdate utility and it installed QuickTime 7.1 and Apple Security Update 2006-003. Now when I compile, I get the following errors:
ld: Undefined symbols:
_LLCStyleInfoCheckForOpenTypeTables referenced from QuartzCore expected to be defined in ApplicationServices
_LLCStyleInfoGetUserRunFeatures referenced from QuartzCore expected to be defined in ApplicationServices
This error used to be "[blahblahblah] referenced from Quicktime epected to be defined in ApplicationServices" not QuartzCore. I looked at /System/Library/Frameworks/QuartzCore.framework/Versions/A/QuartzCore and sure enough, it has a modifcation date of today.
The previous error was caused what appears to be QuickTime 7.0.4 being developed/compiled on Tiger and then distributed to Panther users like myself via Software Update.
I can't figure out whether the QuickTime update or the Security Update changed my QuartzCore, but I'm having trouble figuring out a solution to this problem.
Find a copy of the old QuartzCore framework? Figure out some way to add a dummy library that will define these symbols? Make sure Apple developers compile stuff on Panther when delivering code for Panther? I had to downgrade from Quicktime 7.0.4 to 7.0.1 to compile, which broke my iTunes 6.0.4. Now that won't even help, because the Quicktime 7.0.1 downgrade package doesn't contain QuartzCore.I can't compile anymore after the recent update on PowerMac G5 1.8GHz.
It still works on iBook G4 1GHz.
Both running Mac Os X 10.4.6

PowerMac G5 1.8GHz (single processor) Mac OS X (10.4.6) 1.2GB RAM -
since the last (today) and 5-10-07 system update some changes are generating the following error during boot process:
Waiting 0s before mounting root device
/bin/mknod /dev/sda2 b 8 2
kernel starts, but I am wondering if there is any way to resolve this issue?thank you for fast response,
I have two kernels:
one compiled on 5-10-07 one compiled today (same .config file since I have seen this error first time)
first kernel (compiled on 5-10-07) boots without any error messages, second compiled today generates errors as above.
After error messages appear system boots fine and /dev/sda2 is listed.
so there must be a difference (filesystem update? or updated something else) that is causing this error. this is something that image is referring to as old kernel/image boots without error. -
Why do I get the JSP compilation error?
Why do I get the JSP compilation error?

Wtf, not possible. Really. On the weekend I'll be at the Pentium-M again, I'll go compile a kernel using the Arch config file. I can't imagine it taking more than half an hour.
Lockheed wrote:No. It's mine. It's awesome and you can't have it Seriously, I have an old lightweight LXbuntu 9.04 on it and it works like a charm.
Whoa!
Though, of course it works like a charm, with 384MB you have plenty of ram. Should be enough even for a kernel compile. Just don't compile in a tmpfs. And, like tomegun says, maybe switch from lzma to gzip compression. And a machine-specific config would also cut down on the compile time a lot.
Lockheed wrote:I have a Pentium 133, too, unfortunately the mobo must be cracked somewhere as it rarely starts. What a pity.
My condolences
We had the habit of always giving away the old computer when we bought a new one. Sometimes I regret it. One of the masterpieces was a Pentium MMX 166Mhz with, get this, 3dfx Voodoo graphics. Yeah, the legendary accelerator. Oh how I wish I still had that. The oldest machine that's still at home is an AMD Duron 800Mhz, with I think a Geforce FX 5200.
Edit: Holy eff, I compiled a kernel with an Arch config on a Core i3-530. It took 24 minutes!! My fairly generic kernel takes 4:30 minutes, a machine-specific one takes 2:30 minutes. Man, the Arch kernel really does have everything including the kitchen sink in it. So I can now see it taking 60 minutes on a Core2Duo.
Compiling all that stuff on a slow machine makes no sense, so Lockheed I really suggest you make a machine-specific config. You'll get the kernel compiled in like 1/10 of the time.

Kalu: Keeping Arch Linux Up-to-date
Hi all, Yes, there are already a few “update notifier” out there, but I couldn’t find one that would fit my needs (granted I didn’t search too hard, I was also interested in making my own as a fun exercice…) so I decided to make a new one. kalu (whic
