Kernel logs flooded with ACPI messages

I just noticed that my kernel logs are full of messages like the following:
ACPI: EC: non-query interrupt received: switching to interrupt mode
These messages appear harmless enough, but I'd like to get rid of them... I've been Googling and so far haven't been able to find a workaround. Is there one? Would for instance booting with noapic get rid of this?
(I have no need for APIC FWIW, I use a single-core CPU.)

Gullible Jones,
If you are willing, you should try the latest RC kernel (it runs just fine here).  The GPE storm detection code in drivers/acpi/ec.c was rewritten a few weeks ago, and there was a bug in it.  The latest RC has a fix.

What functional problem do you have, if any? Log messages are not a problem in themselves.

Now i have tried the general troubleshooting steps and i cant figure this out.
    Issue is user specific.
Happens even if Airport is off.
    No applications are running.
Any help figuring out why this message repeats all day long would be helpful.

Also something else i noticed. Check out the following snip of the Secure.log, the information is different.

  • System.log filling with error messages

After SL update my system.log if filling with error messages.
Does any process delete the system.log periodically?
What's causing this error? Getting thousands of them.

Yes. There are three automatic jobs that run daily, weekly, and monthly doing this sort of thing. They run in the early hours of the morning if your Mac is awake, or shortly after it wakes up if it was sleeping. In Leopard, if it was powered-off, they won't run; I don't know if it's the same in Snow.

  • Logs flooded with CGSResolveShmemReference when going from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8

Could someone please explain to me what changed with respect to "CGSResolvShmemReference" between 10.5.7 and 10.5.8.
I just upgraded to 10.5.8 earlier today and applied the latest security patch and I'm getting these messages in my logs:
CGSResolveShmemReference: reference offfset (xxxx) exceeds bounds (xxxx) on shmem obj 0x<hex number>.
I'm getting this from a LOT of apps, from the Dock, iMovie, iPhoto, iShowU, Firefox, Thunderbird, Finder, VirtualBox, etc etc
I have a large memory Mac Pro config that seemed to "behave" much better with 10.5.7 (I have 13GBs of RAM). I could run 4-5 Virtualbox guest VMs, multiple browsers, do screencapture of screencasts, edit the screencasts in iMove, run different browsers and email cients, etc etc, all without my mac breaking a sweat (well at least not a heavy sweat).
Now, nothing seems to behave. iMovie is unstable, firefox will slow down and speed up, thunderbird too, iShowU will have MISSING menu lists when selecting a menu drop down, iMovie will do the same, iPhoto doesn't seem to pick up all the albums I have, at least not between invocations consistantly, and I can't do the same tasks concurrently that I used to with 10.5.7 because of little quirks as previously explained or in the case of iShowU and/or iMovie, it will just crash.
10.5.8 from my perspective is JUNK because it makes me LESS productive than 10.5.7 with all these little inconnsistant application quirks that have started since I went to 10.5.8.
Ever since I upgraded, my apps have misbehaved and my logs are inundated with these messages so I have to believe the issues are related. I really don't want to re-install from scratch JUST to get back to 10.5.7....
Could someone please expalain... and please don't pull any punches (I'm technical).
    Bob

Of course not.  Computers always work perfectly.  Upgrades are always flawless.  User data is never lost.  Disks never fail.  Corruptions never occur.   Power is completely reliable.  :-)
But back here on Planet Earth, where bad things do occasionally happen to good data, yes, always have backups of your files.  At least the data that you care about.
The OS files?  Useful for fast(er) recoveries, but available from distributions if lost.  Those files can be recovered.  But your own unique user-local files?  Definitely have copies of those.
Somewhat more seriously, that you're even asking this question could imply you're not already running Time Machine or related archival processing; that you're not creating your own regular backups.  If that's the case, then your data is already exposed to corruption, loss, user error, and to intentional deletions that can sometimes be initiated by miscreants subsequent to a security breach.
But if you do have a Time Machine backup configured and going, you can directly trigger a backup to get the latest copies of the files (if you've been making any changes since the most recent TM backup) and allow it to run to completion, then do your upgrade.

    Hi Jay,
Does that mean that if the logs written "unauthenticated" it means the user actually did not login and it was just the user's PC "pinging" the server because their browser is still on and set to the msg server?
I am trying to graph the http log but my log is as below:

Can I assume that those without the [unauthenticated] are those who actually login during the time period? or is it logout?
Any suggestions on how to graph the http log?

The Kernel keeps sending this message, apparently at a rather brisk pace.  It's been going on for over a month apparently*.  It's ogooglebar, also.  Any thoughts on what it is?  I'm not observing anything wrong on the system, but it's annoying when I need to rummage through the logs for whatever reason.

anyone known which process is doing that ?

Yup. Same issue here. It's quite disconcerting.

  • My computer uses Windows XP.  The latest Apple Update for iTunes ruined everything.  It won't load the software, and I'm getting flooded with error messages.  Is this latest update a bunch of crap?

My computers uses WindowsXP.  The latest Apple Software Update put the latest version of iTunes on my computer, and now iTunes doesn't work.  I've tried that instructions on the Apple homepage (delete program, reinstall, etc.), and nothing works.  What's worse is that I'm getting error messages every time I log on to my computer.  Is this latest version a pile of pooh?  Anybody know how to fix this?  Or do I need to wait for Apple to figure out where they screwed up?

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.

  • Mail flooded with unread messages/FB app not working...linked?

All at once my Mail inbox has over 2,400 messages and Facebook app not working. I have not updated the last 2 updates bc of storage, but don't know why yesterday it decided to have a problem with that? Any ideas what's going on and how to fix it?

After Googling this issue to death, I finally clicked on the ? icon in the mail preferences panel. Apparently this is working as intended:
Display unread messages with bold font:
Display unread messages in bold font in classic layout, to help you distinguish them from messages you have read.

  • Flooded with error: Table RequestUsage_PartitionX has 442892288 bytes that has exceeded the max bytes 442857142

    Hi all,
Since last week my 2013 farm (3 WFE, 3 App server, SQL 2012) application event log flooded with error every 5 minutes.
Table RequestUsage_PartitionX has 442892288 bytes that has exceeded the max bytes 442857142.
I have google the error and only found Steve Mann's blog discussing about this.  Yet there is no additional information in terms of how to fix it.  Just wondering if anybody has seen this and know how to fix it?
Appreciate any suggestion and thanks in advance.
    Sally

    Hi  Sally,
    Thank you for your posting!
For your error, it is coming from the Usage Infrastructure. The root cause is that your SharePoint Server  usage data is exceeding the daily partition size for the logging DataBase.
For more detailed information, you can refer to the blog:
Blind spots in Usage file and Web Analytics Reports
Thank you for your understanding and support.

  • Mac Mini Audio Intermittent over HDMI, Cuts out with Assertion in kernel.log

Hello. I've been having trouble with a mac mini (Mid 2011) that I bought on Thursday. It's running OSX 10.7. The Mac Mini is the $599 unit.
I've got it hooked up to my Sony BRAVIA HDTV (also this year's model) via HDMI, with audio configured to be delivered via HDMI to the TV alongside video. Initially the audio will play through my TV, but after an hour or two of watching something, it will cut out, and there will be no more sound coming out of the TV from the mac. Ultimately, the only way I can fix it is to reboot the Mac Mini. I've also observed that at about the same time sound cuts out, the following error message appears in kernel.log:
Aug 12 19:21:40 joshs-Mac-mini kernel[0]: Sound assertion "0 != result" failed in AppleHDAWidget at line 3957 goto handler
    Aug 12 19:22:10 --- last message repeated 5 times
As far as I know, assertions failures usually mean software problems (bugs). I suspect I may be encountering a kernel-level bug in Lion, as this error message is showing in kernel.log.
The following is a list of diagnostic steps I've taken:
    - I've double-checked the sound output device in preferences. It didn't spontaneously change from SONY TV (HDMI) after sound cut out.
    - I've tried changing output to the internal speakers. It plays sound from the mac mini (as expected). When I change it back to HDMI, still no sound from the TV.
    - I've tried turning off and back on the tv. No effect.
    - I've tried unplugging and replugging the HDMI cable. No effect.
    - I've tried replacing the HDMI cable with two other alternates. No effect.
    - I've tried other HDMI inputs for my TV with HDMI attached. No effect.
    - Note: I've got a ps3 and xbox360 on the TV that has successfully used the HDMI inputs and cables tested on. They've never had this type of problem, so I don't think there's a problem with the TV.
    - I've tried rebooting the mac and resetting the "PRAM" (Command-Option-P-R before the grey screen on bootup). Sound still cuts out after a while.
    - All updates are applied.
Does anybody else have any ideas about what I could try to fix this? This problem is pretty much a deal breaker, as rebooting the mac mini mid-movie kind of destroys the movie-watching experience.
    Thanks

I'd just like to jump in on this thread to report exactly the same problem.
2011 Mac Mini (the 2.5GHz i5 model) running Lion, Sony Bravia TV, HDMI sounds cuts out after a while with the console error "Aug 15 18:30:25 Mini kernel[0]: Sound assertion "0 != result" failed in AppleHDAWidget at line 3957 goto handler".
Interestingly, after the error occurs, I can still get 5.1 sound through Plex, but not through Quicktime. 2.0 sound and system sounds all fail until I reboot the system.
Any help would be appreciated. I would prefer not to have to return the Mini.
    Thanks.
