PowerBook G4 15", 1.67GHz Mac OS X (10.4.6)
Hi, Robato.
1. You already had another topic open here concerning your ongoing kernel panic problems. No need to start a second topic.
2. The 0x600 (Alignment) panic is another issue related to memory access, indicating potential RAM, processor, programming, or other hardware errors. There's nothing particular in the Backtrace of each panic log to led more clues. See point 6 below.
3. I recognize from your other topic that 20 loops of the AHT did not return a problem. I've seen it take as many as 40 loops some time, but 20 is a pretty good test if you looped the Extended Test.
4. The log snippet you posted may not be relevant, especially since it happened 20 minutes before the panic.4.1. The first message
Apr 15 19:31:17 My-Computer kernel[0]: hfs_relocate: didn't move into metadata zone
appears to deal with a problem encountered while attempting to perform Adaptive Hot File Clustering. Basically, Mac OS X attempts to automatically defragment small files (under 20MB) that are highly fragmented. The attempt failed because new allocation blocks could not be acquired, implying your disk may be getting near full. If your hard disk is nearing full, panics may result: see my "Problems from insufficient RAM and free hard disk space" FAQ.
A relatively recent listing of the source code from which that message is generated can be found here.
4.2. The second message
Apr 15 19:32:13 My-Computer kernel[0]: disk1: alignment error.
may not be referring to your startup disk, but a CD or DVD you had attempted to mount, or an external hard drive. Normally, references to your startup disk will be something like disk0s3, not disk1.
You can see the device number for each of your mounted volumes by issuing the
df -a
command in Terminal.5. You wrote: "Verification of the HD with Disk Utility does not reveal any problem."If you're performing Live Verification, i.e. running Disk Utility > Verify Disk while started up from your startup disk, instead startup from your Tiger Install DVD and run Disk Utility from there, per my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ.
6. None of my earlier advice has changed: you need to work through the troubleshooting steps "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. The FAQ is a roadmap, so follow the steps in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein. The other FAQs I've cited above in this post are some of the steps in the process of troubleshooting kernel panics.
Unfortunately, there's no magic bullet for the set of panic logs you've posted.
Good luck!

Mac OS X (10.4.2) -
Power Mac G4 (FW800) freezes often, with an occasional kernel panic
I recently purchased a Power Mac G4 (FW800) on eBay for $160, minus a hard drive and stock video card, along with a hard drive cage.
Since I opened the box it came in late Saturday night, the lovely machine has constantly stalled, crashed, and for a while, I received kernel panics left and right-in fact, I had one today, but it was the text version (unlike the visual kernel panic, which is the kernel panic seen in OS X 10.2+, and I have 10.4.11 running on this machine).
Often, if I multitask, import music on iTunes, or do intense activity, it freezes.
To solve the problem, I have done multiple memory tests, have performed disk checks (verified disk permissions and have verified the disk itself, and have done repairs on the disk), have swapped RAM for more stable ram (I was getting a RAM error for a while with some generic RAM).
I would hate to sell the machine for parts, but if worse comes to worse, that may be the route I may go under. Is there anything I could do to avoid having to go that route? From the inside, all of the motherboard capacitors look fine, but I haven't checked the graphics card yet, but I doubt that's the culprit. I want to see if I could push my luck with Apple sending the AHT for the Power Mac, since I can't find any on eBay, but I'm working with a vintage Mac here, and this is New York, so my luck may be out.
Interesting, I installed iStat, and it has been giving me misleading readings. It says my CPU is at over 1000ºC, when I know through Temperature Monitor that the CPU is around 100º-110ºF and rarely goes above 115ºF.
There are some things I haven't tried yet:
1) Buying actual 2.5v RAM. That may hopefully be the key.
2) Removing the USB card I put in, along with my Broadcom-equipped Belkin Wi-Fi card I put in.
3) Calling Apple and begging them to send me a copy of the AHT for the Power Mac, and with that, hopefully, a copy of the system software.
Any suggestions? Comments? If need be, I'll post the system/crash logs for you hardware junkies.
System stats:
Power Mac G4 (FW800)
1.0GHz PowerPC G4 on a 133MHz bus
1GB PC2100 DDR SDRAM (originally had some PC3200 in the machine).
120GB Seagate HD
Stock Phillips CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo
Pioneer DVD-111D (the nice DVD burner I cannibalized off my beautiful homebuilt Wine-doze PC)
Belkin 54g 802.11g Wi-Fi card
Masscool XWT-MTU25 USB 2.0 card
So far, I have removed iStat, have gone ahead and pulled out the USB card. We'll keep fingers crossed.Did both, and I still freeze up when importing iTunes songs. I'll include some kernel panic logs for reference, for you techies.

Kernel panics on 3 different computers at once?!?!?
I don't know what forum to post this in, because it is affecting a whole range of models. Short of a curse, or massive coincidence, I don't know how to explain this and am hoping someone has an idea. I have a mac mini from 2002 or so, running 10.4. I have a 17" G4 powerbook with 10.4. There is also a white G3 powerbook with 10.4, and a brand new iMac with 10.6. Within the last 2 weeks, the first 3 machines started having kernel panics - after they're on for a while, the black square comes up in the middle of the screen telling me in several languages that I have to reboot. The iMac was working fine but then started flickering the screen (which would eventually go dark) and now is showing the little folder with a question mark upon startup. That one is still on AppleCare so I'll let them take a crack at it. The iMac is on a UPS, and the laptops basically run off their battery, so I didn't think it could be the electricity (and we've never noticed a problem before). Any ideas?!?
For a start, let's focus on the 17" PowerBook G4 (a "white" G4 notebook is an
"iBook"--different critter). Find the latest entry in Console for
panic.log (log entries are date- and time-stamped so it's easy to find
the most recent). Copy the latest entry and paste it into this thread. Logs are
hard to read, but enough of us here have stared at them long enough to absorb
some troubleshooting info.
ok. the logs follow.
Are all three computers on the same network? if so, what happens if you take
one off the network and test? We're gong to be searching for common factors,
and a network issue is a good place to start.
interesting! I've turned off airport on two of the laptops and they haven't crashed yet. I put one on a wired (Ethernet) connection (through a Buffalo link station), let's see if it crashed. I also know that taking out the airport card from the white iBook also prevented the crashes, which people had said was due to a bad card, but now I'm wondering. What could it be about being on my network (Airport Extreme) that is causing kernel panics?!? Anyway, here are the logs - thanks in advance

Unresolved kernel trap 0x600 - now can't start computer!
Our Mac G4 (10.2.8, dual 1GHz, 1GB RAM) has been suffering from more and more frequent kernel panics and crashes (see my previous post: http://tinyurl.com/hxut9), and now seems to have died completely. This morning (it is left on all night, as it runs a kind of server) the screen was blank but the light was on, indicating it was running. No joy waking it up, so I held down the power button until it restarted. It then gave me the following message:
"Unresolved kernel trap (cpu 0): 0x600 - Alignment DAR = 0428005e2 PC=0x0008d3d8"
repeated all the way down the screen.
It now won't start up: it hangs on a screen with a blue background and white box with the progress bar stuck on "Waiting for network port mapper". All external hardware except screen and mouse are unplugged - usually, there's an external hard-drive and a scanner plugged in.
Can anyone help?
Some background: as I said in my previous post, we've had odd network issues with it recently, where it could access the internet, but the outside world couldn't access it (for the server, or for scheduled backups across the network). This was the case with the firewall on or off. An extended hardware test eventually (34th loop) gave the error code "modm /2 /8", which would suggest to me there was a problem with the MODEM, but we don't use that - only the network card. Disk Utility gave no errors.
Any help / advice would be much appreciated! Although we have a network backup of the data, we can't access it without that computer, and I need it urgently!
Thanks very much,
Alex
PS. Update: on the 4th go, it has now managed to restart! I am not optimistic about this lasting though, so would really like to resolve the issues...

Dual 1GHz G4 Mac OS X (10.2.x)I've now managed to restart it again (it crashed after first restart, saying "FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF"), and have retrieved the panic log. Weirdly, the date for the last two entries seems to have been reset - the third most recent is Wed Jul 26 17:48:05 2006, but the last two are Thu Jan 1 01:33:03 1970 and Thu Jan 1 01:42:20 1970.

Help understanding kernel panic
Hi,
I have a Gigabyte Ethernet powermac, 1 GB sdram (DMS Certified), a sonnet 1.4ghz upgrade cpu, and and Belkin usb 2 card installed (f5u220) and os x tiger 10.4.11
I've been suddenly getting daily kernel panics.
I was just wondering if anyone can help me interpret the latest one posted below, as it doesn't seem to mention anything specific (such as drivers or usb)
I reinstalled os x tiger but it's still happening. I'm running memtest as I write this.
I have been doing allot of hardware changes, such as installing the cpu and belkin card, so it's hard to pinpoint a specific hardware change that could cause it.

Well it looks like it might be faulty ram.
The test said it failed, see below.
I have two questions though:
(1) One odd thing is the test only said it was testing 734MB even though I have 1GB (2x 512). The system profiler reports 1gb, but it only tested 734. Is that normal for memtest?
(2) I am using pc133 ram, and the system supports pc100. Could this cause the problem reported or is it likely faulty ram?
Thanks

Why did I have a kernel panic?
I was in the process of disconnecting my Nikon D40 (a procedure I have done many times without incident). Usually I shut the camera off and pull out the USB connector once the volume disappears from my desktop, with no problem. This time, as soon as I shut off the camera, I got a strange "You must restart your computer" message I'd never seen before (I've had the computer almost 3 years). Discovered this was a "kernel panic" message.
Why did my computer do this? The only thing that's changed on it recently is that I installed Adobe Air although I don't believe I was running any Air applications at the time. At the time I was running Photoshop Elements, Nikon Picture Project, Firefox and a feed reader called Feedpopper. Again I have run all these programs without trouble for several years.
Here is the message from panic.log:

Pacman induces kernel panic (intermittent)
Hello Archers,
I've got a fresh Arch install. I'm working my way through syncing packages I want from pacman. Two times now, a call to "pacman -S" has resulted in a kernel panic requiring a hard reboot.
I've booted into my Arch CD - it was still sitting in the drive anyway - and recovered the kernel and pacman logs.

It seems to happen when pacman tries to use the network. The kernel log also seems to suggest a network problem.

I haven't had any kernel panics when using any other network programs, just pacman. I can ping google by name and I can scp to my laptop running on the WLAN.
I tried googling, using the wiki, and searching the forums, but all kernel-panic related problem seem to happen at boot time, not in the process of using pacman.
Some other things about my system that may or may not affect things: it's an LVM over LUKS over LVM, the lowest LVM sits across several hard-drives, and it's got an AMD64 processor but I installed off an i686 iso.
Does anyone have any ideas?I just generated another kernel panic while trying to sync fuse, openssh and sshfs from pacman.
I now notice something not captured by either the kernel log or the pacman log. Before the call trace begins, I also get this message:
:: Retrieving packages from extra...
[ 8340.507133] Kernel panic - not syncing: cannot create neighbour cache statistics
Still looking for ideas here. It's really weird that pacman can work properly for a while and then all of a sudden causes a kernel panic. -
Persisting kernel panic on my eMac, can't diagnose the problem.
Believe it or not, I still own an old 2005 eMac. It's still a good piece of kit for ******* around on and I'd like to get a little more mileage out of it. My problem is every time I turn it on I get kernel panic. If I let the computer sit for a few months, it operates several minutes longer without incurring kernel panic. If I turn it back on an hour later, kernel panic occurs rather quickly. I've had some other problems too after it was suggested that I re-align the RAM: I got a fleshing light and no startup which I diagnosed to be something wrong with the RAM. A couple days later I started it up again and got a no-entry symbol instead of a grey apple symbol. A couple weeks after that I safe booted up fine and got a few minutes of use out of it before kernel panic hit again. My question is should I replace the RAM? Or it something much worse like a hard drive issue?
Hi, have you blown the dust out of it lately?
Do you know which exact Model it is?
If you don't know the model, find the Serial# & use it on one of these sites, but don't post the Serial# here...

Mid 2010 Macbook Pro Keeps Restarting due to Kernel Panic. Ideas for how to fix?
So my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro keeps randomly restarting, and giving me a screen that says something like "your computer restarted due to a problem."
Looks like it as a kernel panic, but I have no idea what this is. Seems to be no pattern for when it crashes. Used to do it maybe once a month and now this is the 5th time in two days.
Any idea what might be going on? Looked at past threads but nothing seemed to apply.

Looks like it as a kernel panic, but I have no idea what this is. Seems to be no pattern for when it crashes. Used to do it maybe once a month and now this is the 5th time in two days.
Any idea what might be going on? Looked at past threads but nothing seemed to apply.

I have a 2010 macbook pro currently running 10.6.8 that has served me very well over the last 4 years, except in recent months it has been getting frequent kernel panics. Started every few weeks, now happens multiple times a day. It seems to happen more frequently when I'm doing something like playing a game which makes me think it might be related to the GPU or the computer overheating, but I can't find any specifics on how I'd go about troubleshooting from here. A typical report after a kernel panic is below:

You may be able to use gfxCardStatus 2.3 to switch to using the other GPU instead which should stop the frequent panics until you get the motherboard replaced or buy a new computer.
Of course don't dismiss the possibility that the software you have installed has installed extensions that are not compatible:
com.cisco.nke.ipsec 2.0.1
com.quark.driver.TetherBerry 1.0.0d6
com.parallels.kext.prl_vnic 7.0 14922.693916

com.parallels.kext.prl_usb_connect 7.0 14922.693916
Try running in Safe Mode to see if the panics stop. If they do, then you need to completely uninstall the software responsible for the above extensions: Cisco, Quark, and Parallels. -

Get kernel panic when I burn DVDs
when I burn several DVDs using the internal DVD burner on my 1.25 Ghz G4 running OS X 10.4.11, I am getting a kernel panic that tells me to reboot my computer. I'm using Toast Titanium 8 to burn with. Any ideas how to prevent this?
Here's the details:

Kernel Panic with 10.4.3, 10.4.4
I have a Quicksilver dual 1GHz G4 with 1.25GB of ram. It was ridiculously stable until the 10.4.3 update. With the 10.4.4 update, things got even worse. I now have so many kernel panics as to make the machine unusable.
I've run through the "Resolving Kernel Panics" page step-by-step... run DiskWarrior, run the machine with "plugs-out" (NO FireWire or USB devices plugged in), archive & installed, ran with each stick of ram individually, repaired permissions, zapped the PRAM, run "reset-nvram" and "reset-all" in Open Firmware.... nothing fixes it, nothing seems to be the culprit.
Crash log below. Can anyone help PLEASE?

Quicksilver G4 Mac OS X (10.4.4)Sorry, forgot to include that info. I ran the Apple Hardware Test and the TechTool Pro suite of hardware tests.... all passed. (And yes, I had pulled everything FireWire and USB except the Apple keyboard and mouse, which were plugged directly into the Mac.) In addition to the Open Firmware "reset-nvram" and "reset-all", I also hit the CUDA switch on the motherboard. The machine is still giving me kernel panics. The only thing I haven't done yet is pull the hard drives and clean-install onto a new drive. (I hope to do that tonight.)
What's interesting is that the dim-out "You have to restart your computer" screen is gone, and has been replaced by white-on-black text generator text overwriting the GUI display, and after restart there's no "report to Apple" dialog, nor is there any log entry. Having Console and Activity Monitor show nothing out of the ordinary.
For what it's worth, I'm "forcing" the KP by running iTunes with the visualizer running, figuring that's the closest thing to me sitting at it doing stuff and waiting for it to crash out. When it panics, the music goes into a loop of the last 1/2-second of music (i.e. "dit-dit-dit-dit-dit-dit...")
Another item of note is that 10.4.0 (after clean install) and 10.4.2 do not have this problem. The panics only occur under 10.4.3 and 10.4.4.
The text of the white-on-black text is retyped as follows. Notice that the DAR record is the only thing different between the two:

Hi all -
So my Mac Pro 1,1 has been having kernel panics intermittently and I don't think they are tied to any specific OS upgrade. I used to get a couple a year until a few months ago and now I am getting them more frequently and I can't repro them.
I've Googled incessantly the past several days looking for possible solutions and cannot come up with anything. Does the kernel crash log mean anything to anybody?

Mac OS X kernel generally does not do this. But you are not running Mac OS X kernel, you have made a large number of modifications to it:

The backtrace points to Disk I/O routines as the place where the problem was detected. I would be very suspicious of your third-party drives that require non-standard drivers. I have external drives, but none requires a Driver, and I certainly do not see your crashes.
If you want Apple to take your problem seriously, you will need to duplicate the failure with no non-Apple kernel extensions present.
