Kernel panics on 3 different computers at once?!?!?

I don't know what forum to post this in, because it is affecting a whole range of models. Short of a curse, or massive coincidence, I don't know how to explain this and am hoping someone has an idea. I have a mac mini from 2002 or so, running 10.4. I have a 17" G4 powerbook with 10.4. There is also a white G3 powerbook with 10.4, and a brand new iMac with 10.6. Within the last 2 weeks, the first 3 machines started having kernel panics - after they're on for a while, the black square comes up in the middle of the screen telling me in several languages that I have to reboot. The iMac was working fine but then started flickering the screen (which would eventually go dark) and now is showing the little folder with a question mark upon startup. That one is still on AppleCare so I'll let them take a crack at it. The iMac is on a UPS, and the laptops basically run off their battery, so I didn't think it could be the electricity (and we've never noticed a problem before). Any ideas?!?

For a start, let's focus on the 17" PowerBook G4 (a "white" G4 notebook is an
"iBook"--different critter). Find the latest entry in Console for
panic.log (log entries are date- and time-stamped so it's easy to find
the most recent). Copy the latest entry and paste it into this thread. Logs are
hard to read, but enough of us here have stared at them long enough to absorb
some troubleshooting info.
ok. the logs follow.
Are all three computers on the same network? if so, what happens if you take
one off the network and test? We're gong to be searching for common factors,
and a network issue is a good place to start.
interesting! I've turned off airport on two of the laptops and they haven't crashed yet. I put one on a wired (Ethernet) connection (through a Buffalo link station), let's see if it crashed. I also know that taking out the airport card from the white iBook also prevented the crashes, which people had said was due to a bad card, but now I'm wondering. What could it be about being on my network (Airport Extreme) that is causing kernel panics?!? Anyway, here are the logs - thanks in advance

  • Kernel Panics at Startup

I've got a MDD Dual 1.25Ghz (a Giga Design Upgrade)
I used to have Kernel Panics every so often but recently once a month (just before Xmas) it got worse, I repaired the permissions and now I get either, (most regular at top):
    1. A KP at the Grey screen
    2. 4 Beeps (BootRom, which I know nothing about but sounds Bad)
    3. If it does boot up and I get the Desktop appear as soon as I click on any thing HD, Menu, Dock it freezes and I get a KP.
    So I have tried:
    1. boot up in Safe mode (results in KP at grey screen)
    2. boot up from Panter and or First Aid software CD/DVDs (again results in KP at grey screen)
    3. Checking ram, removing all reinstalling it individually in different DIMMs.
    4. Reset PRAM.
    5. Gone through the Xlab Kernal Panics FAQ, the only problem is running or installing other third party apps (Disc Warrior, Tech Tool, Drive 10 etc) as I can't get far enough into startup.
The only thing I can do is put in the Panter DVD and boot up while holding the ALT key and run the Apple Hardware Test, that's the only thing that 'works'.
From reading other peoples similar problems applying new Thermal Pads/Paste to the Heat Sink seems a popular answer.
Apart from an archive and install or clean install I have no other ideas.
    Any ideas?

Worked alright last night for an hour. Booted up this morning but got a KP after 5 mins of use. Couldn't get the Panic log for that but the last few are below if anyone uderstands them:

  • Kernel panics MBP13 mid 2009

    Hi there!
i have MBP13 mid 2009 which i use for almost 2 year. It won't brings me any problems about year or so.
Now I'm experiencing kernel panics frequently. It could be once once a week or 4 times per day. Not long time ago i had upgraded to Lion and in my opinion kernel panics became even more frequently than before. I have temp plugin (smcfancontrol) and always controlling cpu temperature and must admit that kernel panics are not related with overheating.
It always related to different things: kernel_task, backupd, syslogd, fseventsd, WindowServer, kextunload, Aperture, Google Chrome
Could anyone please advice me what to do?
Here is for example, the last one, kernel_task:
Interval Since Last Panic Report:  3508 sec

    Hi Everyone!
I had solved my problem. And the problem was with hardware. It was RAM.
I had istalled 2x2Gb aftermaket memory (2x1Gb came from factory). The one thing i did not notice it was 1333Mhz while my mac is use to have 1066Mhz. Because of that system set core bus also to 1333Mhz which it not supposed to be. In fact it is overclocking. And also because of that avg mac temperature was also more than stock (60-70C istead 40-50C). I thought that is 7200RPM drive which i did installed with a memory.
I did upgrade at winter (when avg temp in room is ok) and it was OK. I did full memtest (tooks few hours to check) and memory is ok. At summer when temp is hot system heats more and causing kernel panics.
So i change memery and all went away. It works like a new :-)
So be warned and do not push parts to your mac which is not suppose to be used with it.
    Anton

  • Kernel panic on MacPro medio 2010

Does anyone know have to read this crash rapport?
I have had a lot of them on my MacPro medio 2010.
The kernel panic appears in different situations but especiallly, when I am rendering 3D drawings in Vectorworks 2011
I suspect the RAM but I am not sure.
I checked at Apple Store what kind of RAM that fit and I could see that Apple recommended 1333MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM but when I checked what kind of RAM that was installed at my MacPro it was 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC.
    Is this the cause?

    This is a Hardware issue:
    Machine Check:
    threshold-based error status present
extended corrected memory error handling present
    Machine-check status 0x0000000000000004: machine-check in progress
Mac Pro 65lb tower uses Error Correcting Code (ECC) Memory. Eight additional check bits are stored with each 64-bit word in RAM memory, and when read back, single-bit errors are corrected on the fly and your Mac Pro keeps running. The errors are reflected in About this Mac > ( More Info) > Memory as modules whose status is other than "OK".
Double-bit errors that cannot be corrected cause an immediate halt with a Machine Check to avoid poisoning your data.
When you get all eight modules installed, it is common for your Mac Pro to back off maximum memory speed from 1333 to 1066. That is not a defect.

  • Kernel Panics after Waking from Sleep

Hey everyone, having some problems with my iMac I'm hoping you could help with:
    I'm running a 2o" G5 iMac 1.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM, with OS X 1o.4.7.
What is happening is that if I put my iMac to sleep, and then wake it after a few hours, I get Kernel Panics and have to restart 1-3 times(this has been going on for about a month). I'm also having programs unexpectedly close on me after being able to restart it(mainly Mail & iTunes). This doesn't happen if I only leave my iMac asleep for a 1-2 hours or so.
So I get 3 types of errors, the kernel panic with the different languages after waking the iMac. The kernel panic that displays white text on black bars running down the left side of my screen, after being able to reboot(randomly). And unexpected program shut downs, primarily when using Mail or iTunes.
    What I've done:
    -Reset the PRAM
-Removed all external hardware except mouse/keyboard.
-Ran the hardware disc check which determined I had a bad stick of RAM, so I removed it, and left the stick provided by Apple in.
-Deleted the plists Powermanagement & autoawake, deleted the cache files(per Apple support).
    -Safe boot(still got the panics)
-Erase & Install after backing everything up.
When I re-tested using the clean boot for about a day, I didn't get the errors. However, when I reloaded my initial setup from by backup disk, I started getting the kernel panics after a few hours of sleep again.
I think the fact that I didn't get the panics running the clean boot has hopefully ruled out a hardware problem, so am I looking at some software that could be the culprit? Is there any easy way to narrow down what it might be, or if it's another issue altogether?
Thanks for any help provided, and let me know if I need to provide any further info!
    20" iMac G5/15" PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Thanks for all the helpful ideas everyone(Miriam especially).
I tried logging in as another (new) user, and experienced the same problems. Nothing showing on the activity monitor that I can see as the problem either.
Looks like I'll be heading back down to the Apple store to see what can be done. I had taken it down before, but it was after I had done a clean install, and they couldn't recreate it after 1 hour of sleep, and I didn't want to pay $75 to keep it over night. But I have my crash logs now, and hopefully they'll be a little more receptive the second time around.
    Thanks again!

  • Record same DV source on 2 computers at once

First, I'm not sure if the FCP forum is the place to ask, but I will be using FCP to do this so I am hoping someone else has maybe tried it. Is it possible to 'split' a DV camera's video to go to 2 different computers at once? I need to capture live video from the same camera on 2 computers simultaneously. I found a product (Laird something) that will do this, but I can't spend the $720 that it goes for. Is there anything else out there? Thanks

You probably know our usual response: When attempting to record directly from camera to disk, anything that can go wrong will go wrong. There is nothing more secure than recording to tape.
You have said that you can't spend $800 to get a reliable tool that will do the job but you are willing to risk not getting the video at all by attempting to record to disk?
Doesn't matter, not my problem, I wish you best of luck. There are Firewire hubs, distribution amps, and repeaters on the market. Don't be confused by the apparently subtle differences; they do completely different things. You want a d.a.. The FW hub only allows more devices to share the bus, it won't allow the video signal to go to more than one device. Umm, let me rephrase that, the FW hubs I have in my shop do not distribute multiple copies of the same data. Repeaters are used to resend a FW signal long distances. There may be new tools on the market since I looked.

  • Kernel panic browsing internet with Firefox after last update (2.0.0.7)

Three or four days ago I accepted to update my Firefox browser to version 2.0.0.7
I also downloaded the Widget Wizz RSS 2.1.9 Since then I had repeated kernel panics while browsing different websites.
Has anyone else experienced the same problem?

  • Santa Rosa MBPro 2.4 - starts, but then only kernel panics

Trying to solve this problem, appeared suddenly, now every time I start up the MBPro, I get a kernel panic and the Restart Your Mac message. Appears 10-20 seconds after the little wheel starts spinning under the Apple.
Anyway, I couldn't get any farther, even though I tried different RAM, put in a new hard disk, tried 3 different operating systems. Re. the OS, both Tiger and Snow Leopard seemed to work a little bit, i.e., maybe a half hour or so. Then the kernel panics started again at boot. Now I can't even install an OS. Current OS is Snow Leo, which I installed from an external hard disk.
Anyway, I checked with Apple Hardware Test. I booted from the Apple Hardware Test (original disks were 10.4, don't think that should matter if I have 10.6 installed now, right?). I did the Extended Testing, which took just under an hour, including 25-30 minutes just for the memory test. But everything checked out, including memory.
The suggestion the test provided was "if the test results determine that a hardware problem does not exist, consult the manual or Help system that came with your computer for further troubleshooting".
Obviously can't use Help, as I can't boot the computer.
The manual is pretty concise too, not much help there.
Could this be a software problem? If so, what? I've had the kernel panics with 3 different OS.
What about Airport? I've found a couple threads where people report "airport-enduced kernel panics in Santa Rosa Macbook Pros". Pretty specific.
They referred to a kext in the Airport software causing the kernel panics, maybe a kext specifically for Atheros.
My problem is, I wouldn't be able to go in an remove the kext, as I can't boot the computer.
Does this sound plausible? If so, would it help at all to remove the Airport card? i.e., if there's a conflict between it and the kext? I could always use a USB key for wifi, if that helped solve the problem.
I could try to boot in Firewire disk mode and remove the kext.
    Any suggestions?

N.B. interesting to note that the last time I ran AHT this same memory module checked out okay.
RAM has so many circuits, and millions of varying combinations of what's being used at one time, that it is far from uncommon for bad RAM not to be detected, especially by testing software available to most end-users.
I have swapped the 1 RAM bank that was installed with another, and am now running AHT in Extended mode, with Looping enabled.
    Good plan.
Does that code seem to show a MEMORY problem?
    Yes.
Have there been any problems with the memory SLOTS on the Macbook Pro?
Yes. There have been at least some problems with every part of every electronic/mechanical device ever made, and MBPs are no exception.
ie., like with the Powerbook G4s a few years ago.
I have not seen anywhere near that number of incidents posted here.
I think the RAM tested out okay on another Mac, but I've done so many tests and changes recently that I can't remember. I've got a few 1GB RAM banks for the MBPro and will try those one by one.
Not to state the obvious, but you need to do this in an organized manner, otherwise your results will not be valid (you may test the same module in the same memory bank or not test one at all, in which case you'd be wasting your time). You've got the right idea for testing, but you're going to need to label things/and or organize the results. And sometimes two RAM modules work fine independently, but don't play well together, so stick with the one-module-at-a-time approach until you find one that works over a period of time and with all the apps you normally use. After that you can get into combinations and see what works and/or what doesn't.

  • Kernel panics in OS X 10.5.8, different threads causing

Recently I've had some problems with kernel panics bringing down my Mac Pro. • Kernel Panic Once Every Fresh Boot, Then Boots Fine

My Macbook Pro has taken to kernel panicking once before it will boot up fine.  Seems to happen almost everytime I shutdown, and reboot.  Then once I power off manually, and restart again, it boots up fine.  I do have 6GB of RAM in it, which I believe isn't officially supported, but it has worked just fine for over a year in that configuration, until recently.  Below is the panic log.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • All fine and now kernel panic once a week?

After years of never having seen one, I am getting kernel panics about once a week. They seem to occur when I am online. I am running OS 10.6.8 (yes, I know) and have had no problems. I had been running Norton Antivirus (yes, I now know about that too) without incident for a few years but have now removed it. Otherwise nothing has changed except for whenever the last Apple system update was. I am currently up to date, OS not withstanding.
Below is the log for the last panic if anyone is a kernel whisperer:

  • My MBP suffers from DAILY "kernel panic" attacks.  This has happened ever since I downloaded Lion.  It appears to happen much more often than the Apple support page suggests it does.  Once the MBP re-boots, it works fine, zips along in all programs.

My MBP suffers from "kernel panic" attacks on an almost daily basis.  This has occured ever since I downloaded Lion.  The Apple support page suggests that this is a rare occurance, but it happens to me almost every day.  Most often, if I let the computer go to sleep or close the lid, I'll find that it won't "wake up" without a complete re-boot.  It always sends a report to Apple and for a couple of days I thought the issue was resolved, but now it's happening again with increasing regularity.  I've reinstalled Lion once already... Any suggestions?

We can't help without the KP. In the meantime, see

  • IMac kernel panics happen once a week

    Hi:
I have an iMac  with OSX 10.9.5 installed. After I've installed RAM from OWC I am getting kernel panics once per week...I did check the memory in single user mode with memtest and no errors were found (so I suppose it is not a memory issue). The process responsible for the panic is changing:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: Skype (After this I've removed Skype, but a week later I got another kernel panic)
    Now it is:
BSD process name corresponding to current thread: ARM
So my question is what is ARM?
    Thanks

    Thank you for your answer.
But the periodicity of recurrence of the panics seems to indicate some weirdness, every 7 days....
    Please, see the screenshot
The thing is that I already gave away my old memory to a colleague. And changing back means going from 16gb to 4gb for a week at least... And since I've never had kernel panics with the previous memory I think I won't see it. I want to eliminate all the other issues before sending the memory back for replacement (because it isa work computer), and OWC does not do avance replacements for Canada...
    Thanks

The panic pretty much only happens when they are working in Quark 7, except for Computer 2 where the panic happens in Quark and upon startup. They are all using files off a network, but not necessarily accessing the network when the panic happens.
Of course this leads me to believe that it's a Quark 7 problem. What would be the best method for fixing this issue?
I hope I've supplied enough information. Thank you for your help!

Ok... here's the logs. For some reason I cannot find Computer 3's log. It's not in the same place as Computer 1 & 2's. So, for now, here's Computer 1 & 2 logs:

    ********************* GOODBYE FROM APPLEJACK *********************
The operator on Computer 1 says her computer already seems happier (gotta love a happy mac!). I understand some of the stuff on the logs, but some of it is a little over my head. How does it look?

  • I have kernel panic too! but for a different reason...

    hey all
my macbook has recently started experiencing kernel panic and i cant figure out why.
the first time it happened i used disk utility to verify the hard drive. DU said the hard drive needed to be repaired. i tried to boot up from the OSX 10.4 disk that came with my computer, but my computer wouldnt boot. so i booted up from disk warrior instead. i rebuilt the directory, ran the hardware check (no probs reported) and had DW check all files and folders. DW reported one corrupt .plist file. (i have looked at every single .plist file in the folder DW told me to but the corrupt file is nowhere to be found.) however, when i booted up normally and ran disk utility again DU said my hard drive was fine.
then kernel panic struck again. did a little research and found apple jack. ran all 5 of apple jack scripts and AJ also said all is well.
kernel panic again. used cleanapp to delete some old programs and empty caches. manually deleted about 80% of .plist files hoping that one of them would be the corrupt one. DW still reports one corrupt .plist file. so i decide to wipe the computer and do a clean install of 10.4. but when i try to open the OSX installer (from the disk that came with my computer) i get a message that says 10.4 cant be installed on this computer... that it isnt compatible. ***?
more research and this time decide on tech tools pro. run every test TTP has to offer and everything checks out fine.
so... now i dont know what to do. and my computer just had kernel panic again this morning. i pasted the report from it below. i dont know enough to tell if theres anything in there that explains whats wrong with my computer.
can anyone out there help me? in the very least can anyone tell me how to get my computer to recognize that it is compatible with 10.4 so i can erase everything and start again?
bah! this *****. thx in advance for any help you can give...

Understanding crash logs isn’t easy and it’s hard (sometimes impossible) to decipher the cause of the problem. Take a look at Apple’s Crash Reporter document at http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2004/tn2123.html

Kernel panics are usually caused by a hardware problem – frequently RAM, a USB device or a Firewire device. What external devices do you have connected? When trying to troubleshoot problems, disconnect all external devices. Do you experience the same problems?
To eliminate RAM being the problem, Look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber.
May be a solution on one of these links.
