Kernel panic everyday

For the past week, I've been getting kernel panics at least once a day. I ran memtest in single user mode and my memory seems to be fine, so I'm not sure what the issue is. Here's the error report.

  • Kernel Panics everyday on my Powermac G5

I've been having Kernel Panics pretty much everyday for awhile now and havent really had the time to bring it into the Apple Store so I've been hoping to get somewhere on here so that I can fix this problem myself. I did a scan on my computer with Tech Tools Deluxe and here is the report.
    Report for Volume 'Macintosh HD'
    Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Interface: ATA
    Capacity: 232.8 GB
    Available: 52.9 GB
    Used: 179.9 GB
    File Count: 704,569
    Processor
    Passed
This test verifies that the Central Processor Unit (CPU) is operating correctly.
    RAM
    Passed
This test checks physical and virtual memory. The program deploys a variety of memory test routines that allow RAM to be inspected for inconsistencies.
    Video RAM
    Failed (Error = 8)
Video RAM, as all components of your video circuitry, must be fully functional for graphics to be properly displayed. Damaged VRAM can cause missing bits, screen noise, system lock ups, or freezes. TechTool Deluxe tests the VRAM on the Macintosh main logic board, as well as some third-party video cards.
If the VRAM test should fail, try these steps in order and run the test again after each step:
    o Quit all other applications.
    o Restart the system.
o Check any recently-added hardware for proper installation.
o Run the computer from another volume (if available).
    o Reinstall the OS.
    o Contact AppleCare.
    USB
    Passed
The USB test verifies that control signals sent over the Universal Serial Bus are properly transmitted and received.
    Diagnostic
    Passed
This test initiates a self-diagnostic on the target volume. These routines are designed by the drive manufacturer and provide excellent insight into the operational condition of the drive.
    Rezero Unit
    Skipped
This test determines the ability of the device to resynchronize and rezero the read/write heads.
    Format Check
    Skipped
This test establishes whether the volume was properly formatted during initial setup routines.
    Surface Scan
    Passed
The Surface Scan test will scan the disk for bad blocks. TechTool Deluxe can map out the offending blocks so that they are not used in the future.
    Random Read
    Skipped
Used in conjunction with the Random Write test, this test verifies that data can be reliably read from random memory locations.
    Random Write
    Skipped
Used in conjunction with the Random Read test, this test verifies that data can be reliably written to random memory locations.
    Linear Read
    Skipped
Used in conjunction with the Linear Write test, this test verifies that data can be reliably read from a linear set of blocks on the device.
    Linear Write
    Skipped
Used in conjunction with the Linear Read test, this test verifies that data can be reliably written to a linear set of blocks on the device.
    Seek
    Skipped
This test checks the ability of the initiator to position the device heads in preparation for access to a particular logical block on the device.
    Read Buffer
    Skipped
Used in conjunction with the Write Buffer test, this test checks the device buffer cache and bus integrity.
    Write Buffer
    Skipped
Used in conjunction with the Read Buffer test, this test checks the device buffer cache and bus integrity.
    Volume Structure
    Unavailable
TechTool Deluxe can scan volumes for problems related to the numerous structures that are necessary for the volumes to operate correctly. If problems are found, TechTool Deluxe can attempt to repair the damage to help reduce the chance of future problems.
It says that the Video Ram test failed. Now alot of times when I'll get kernel panics my screensaver will be up fading in and out through a folder within iphoto. Not sure if the screensaver is causing these kernel panics or not. If anyone can shed any light on this issue and help me figure this out i'd be very greatful. For awhile I've simply been restarting my computer, but it's starting to get pretty annoying having to come home and restart my computer and lose anything I had going on my computer while i was out.

I went to the applecare section of the apple website and i'm pretty sure i registered my applecare there before and there's nothing under agreements or anything so i'm not sure if my protection plan has expired already. Is there any surefire way to check if it has expired online? I will try the AHT later this evening but until then here's the panic.log file. Thanks

  • Cinema display causing freezes and kernel panics?

Okay, if anyone has experienced this before I would like to know. I've been having these powerbook freezes at night., and occasional kernel panics during the day. I usualy leave my computer on all night, but when I check it in the morning it's pretty much froze everyday.
I did a complete clean install, I've ran hardware test, past both tests, reset pram, av-ram. I did install 2 gig of ram (2x1), I was beggining to question the ram, but once I unpluged it from my Cinema display I have not had one freeze in three days. Why would that be? Has anyone else had problems like this?
I've used this display for a year with my previous powerbook and have had no problems, but for some reason these two don't get along. I'm thinking it might have something to do with the usb, or firewire ports. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

You know it does seem to be the memory. Once I replaced the memory with different chips all kernel panics have stopped, same with freezes. Funny how this passed all the memory tests.
All seems to be better now anyway....thanks.

  • Macbook MID-2012 crashing every day (Kernel Panic)

    Hi!
I hope I'll find some help here.
My new Macbook (MID 2012) is crashing everyday. I read that this might be a RAM issue (maybe due to the fact that I installed 16GB 1600Mhz of Crucial), but this would really surprise me because I only got this issue after some weeks of the RAM replacement. In some cases I need to restart my MB a couple of times to get it run again. Also pretty weird, I got a similar issue when using Ableton Live, my trackpad an my keyboard freezes (computer continue working), and then I need to restart it a couple of times, and one of the two USB holes isn't working anymore (and to get it work again I need to reboot it again). For information : I have an USB hub with a MIDI keyboard connected, an external HDD, an USB Key, a Dongle, a Keyboard and a Mouse. I'm also using an external Audio Card, connected to the second USB hole, and a 27'' Screen. I really would like to reproduce theses crashes, but it's always happening at some random moment (not necesseraly due to a RAM overloard or so) Maybe some issue in my configuration.... Any thoughts ?
    Thanks in Advance !

Before you do anything, finc and remove the following kernel extension:
    com.avira.kext.FileAccessControl          1.0.0d1
...it could be anywhere but your root System>Library>Extensions would be a good place to start. If you can't find it, download the free "EasyFind" from the Mac App Store and search for "avira." Once you move the kext (to a Desktop folder, for example) reboot and see if you're still having kernel panics.
    Good luck,

  • Kernel Panic when i attempt to load music/videos

when i try to load any mp3s or movie files onto my ipod, i get the kernel panic screen (4 languages, hold down power blah blah blah)... what can i do to make this not happen?

I am in the same boat as you guys.
I have a 60 gig Black 5G iPod. Loaded primarily with video.
It is syncing to a 10.4.3 iMac G5.
I have been using the iPod trouble free for 2 weeks now. Syncing everyday, removing and adding video. No problems.
Last night I attempted to add a number of videos that would have filled up the device. Once I was syncing the last, or second to last, video and the counter in iTunes showed there was about a gig of space left available on the iPod I would get a Kernel Panic (grey screen, power button, 5 languages, telling me to restart).
This happened twice before I removed a handful of videos to keep the iPod from filling up. This seemed to relieve the problem and the iPod synced like normal.
Otherwise the iPod has been performing as expected, video playback is great, syncing otherwise is fine.
My panic.log is very similar to yours rdstuart

So, a follow up question, anyone reading this thread completely (and I mean completely, save for a few megs) maxed out their 5th gen iPod? 30 or 60 gig qualifies as it seems to occur on both models.
Basically I am trying to determine the root of the problem. Is this a serious hardware problem which would warrant an exchange?
Or possible a problem/flaw in the database structure of the iPod that could be rectified via a firmware update?
Has anyone talked with Apple Tech Support about this issue?
My iPod is absolutely great otherwise, none of the many complaints others in the forum have had, and so if this is just a case of leaving a gig or so free on the iPod until a fix materializes so be it! I would rather avoid an unnecessary exchange if possible.
I just want to avoid major hardware issues downs the line naturally.
Thanks for your help and advice in advance.

  • Eternal ball, flashing question mark, kernel panic, etc... all! HELP!

Think this is a good, one... Here is the story:
Some apps will crash, that always happens, right? So I did not pay much attention to it until it was way too often. Learned about disk utility, repaired permissions on a regular basis and moved on. But then... One day disk utility told me there was something that could NOT be repaired. I ran and bought an External HD (usb.. not a good choice, but I found out that too late for an exchange). Backing up from there on was kind of a weekly thing.
But nothing to worry about, I could still use my iBook pretty well and with no problems. Then... one fine day I could not SAVE ANYTHING! Everything was working "normal", but when I wanted to save my work. It told me that I could not do it! Not even making a new bookmark from Firefox!
So I did verify and repair from disk utility, and I ran the hardware test giving me the following:
    *ERROR CODE: 2STF/8/3:ATA -100 ata -6 -Master*
I have no idea what that means, but I used it to look for help online and everything pointed out that my HD needed to be replaced. I believe at this point is when I met the flashing folder icon with the question mark. Suddenly it would not detect the HD! But then... after turning it off and on for a few times it would see it and start-up normally. In one of those lucky start-ups I backed up all I thought was important in the external HD and made a clean install of OS X. Oh... and it is fun to try to install OS X when.. there is no HD in the list to pick for your destination! After a lot of patience, it would show up, but then is when I met the kernel panic mesg! After a few more tries (yes, I am a very patient person... sometimes), I finally could make a clean install of OS X. I even partitioned the HD to make sure there was nothing there.
Ok... seemed like it liked it.. but after a little while, strange things happened again, and after the restart, the blinking folder with the question mark again...
So... no choice, have to replace my HD right? I get a brand new Seagate, 120 Gb, 5400 rpm. Followed instructions from ifixit.com and after 3 hours (and a lot of fun!) I replaced the hard drive on my beloved iBook. This was really fun!
Installed the software on the new HD.. everything looks fine... for a few minutes. I tried to use right away what I use everyday to see if it works: web browser, iTunes, Activity Monitor, played a dvd perhaps, etc... And..? Nop... started crashing again... Got the blinking question mark after restart, etc. But now.. the hardware tests reports me no problems.
Ok... it was not the HD, but I already bought one, and installed it myself!... lets move on and see where is my problem.
    Could it be the ram?
This model has only one slot of removable ram, and a built-in DIMM that I cannnot replace +(or can I?)+, so I remove the one I can, and restart it without it. First it looks fine again, everything is working, but after a while it starts crashing again. So.. it's not the ram... or at least it's not +this one+.
So... I think its time for a Professional to take a look at it, right?. So I took it to a Mac Store (not Apple store) and explained EVERYTHING to the guy that received my beloved iBook, he takes notes and tells me that it has to stay for a few days. After 1 week I receive a call from the store (another employee) telling me the sad news that my HARD DRIVE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED! And that they were very sorry but they cannot recover any of my data... what data?? All that was there was the OS!!!
So... a deep breath and I explain to him everything over the phone. Ok.. he says he will talk with the tech-guy and I'll hear from them in a few more days. I did...
I was very glad to hear it was a cable that connects the HD to the Logic Board (that's what I understood.. I think). That this was only 20 dollars, but somehow, with the labor I ended up paying around 100 dlrs! I found out later that apple changes this cable everytime they upgrade a HD.
Ok.. 200 dlrs spent already ($100 on my Seagate HD + $100 for the cable..), but if get my iBook to work again I'll be happy.
So I go home and start to work on installing and making everything work again: firefox, iTunes, fugu, tried cyberduck, taco, ... everything looked fine. But after a while... it happened again. Sometimes I don't even get the blinking folder, just a grey screen. I turn it off, and then comes the blinking '?' or it starts-up... and if it does, after a while it would crash.
(I started this post on my iBook, and I was like 2/3rd's through when I got the ball... and no response at all... tried force-quit... and nothing, had to power off..AND start this post all over again on my girlfriend's!!! )
So here I am... Of course I want to take it back to the guys at the MacStore and
complain about their poor job... But does anyone here has a good idea of what could it be?
My thoughts are something like this: Seems like if you do not use a lot of memory (I only have 512 Mb total, so a lot of it comes from the virtual, right?) it works fine, but somehow if it reaches a point where it needs more than a certain amount it would crash. I dont know if this even makes sense, but that's my feeling. The guys at the MacStore told me that they tested around 100 times restarting the computer and it looked fine, so yeah... if all they did was use a software to restart once and again, and again... without really using the memory, they would not see the problem, right? The problem comes later.. when you use the iBook.
Could it be then that the problem comes from the ram that is built-in? If so.. can this be replaced? Is it worth it? Can I do it myself?
    Too many questions...
Any thoughts would be more than welcome and...
Thanks for reading all the post!
    E

    yeah....
the problem is that I do not have a firewire external HD, and it will not boot from my usb external...
Anyway... I am back from the MacStore and the guys told me that the next step would be to replace/work on the logic board, and that that was too expensive a job to do an an old iBook like mine, they did not recommend it to anyone (they told me they charge between 600-800 dlrs for this kind of job).
So... seems like my iBook is in a very bad shape.
I saw DT&T online and it seems like they do the job for half the price of the MacStore (before shipping costs), but... still, is it worth it?
I was thinking in the possibility to find someone who sells a used iBook in pieces because of a crashed screen or something, to get another logic board and try to replace it myself, but... is this something an amateur can do by himself?
Haven't checked ifixit.com for that yet.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks..
    Edgar

  • My iPad is freezing and having kernel panics sometimes won't turn on. Help please? (iPad 3rd generation)

Well, my iPad has kernel panics about everyday, when I get on facebook mostly. Basically, any app I get on it will either: freeze and flicker into a black home screen, or it will have a kernel panic and turn off. I am also having problems with it charging. When the iPad is on, it charges just fine. But when it dies and I plug the charger in, it doesn't recognize that it is charging. But, when I take the charger out, it thinks it is charging.

First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without be charged again.  Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

  • Kernel panic "ip_output: mix of packet in packetlist is wrong"

About once a week, my MacBook Pro running 10.5.1 kernel panics with this message:
    panic(cpu 1 caller 0x0023FA51): "ip_output: mix of packet in packetlist is wrong=0x30bd6900"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1228.0.2/bsd/netinet/ip_output.c:1488
I'm diligently sending the problem reports to Apple after reboot, but I'd like to know if anyone came across this before and maybe has an idea what causes it and how to avoid it. Google failed to turn up anything useful for any combination of words and phrases from the above message.

Thank you for your reply. It's good to know someone's listening
As for external devices, I have an Apple USB keyboard plugged in, a generic USB mouse plugged into the keyboard, and an external FireWire hard disk drive plugged in. That's about it.
As for network -- there's plenty of things running. iTunes streaming online radio at times, Azureus BitTorrent client running at times as well as Cisco VPN client and VMWare Fusion with its virtual network adapters.
I'll try resting Azureus for several days and see whether it makes the problem go away. Unfortunately, I can not live without Cisco VPN client as I need it for everyday work, and I also need a Linux image running in VMWare quite often for the same.
Cisco VPN client is at version 4.9.0.1 (0030). It looks like there's a newer one -- 4.9.0.1 (0080) out there, it might be worth trying an upgrade (which I generally don't do unless I have problems, but now I do...).
Cisco VPN and VMWare are the most suspicious as they both load kernel extensions to represent their virtual network interfaces.
I've also been using Cisco VPN for 2 years and VMWare for half a year on Tiger without issues. However, VMWare was version 1.0 back then, and now it's in 1.1.

  • First kernel panic in years - anyone have any thoughts?

I can't even remember the last time I had a kernal panic and all my old material about translating them seems unhelpful - anyone have any thoughts about this:

Linc, could I ask you to look at my log as well? I started having kernel panics just about everyday a few weeks ago. I thought it was related to Intellij IDEA software (coding IDE), but now I am getting panics even when not running that. The latest log is below. Thanks!

  • Kernel Panic error EVERY time I restart!

I have a Powerbook G4 and every time I start my machine I get the kernel panic error. I just got my computer back from Apple -- it was getting it's second logic board replacement! I have never gotten this error before now.
I have done the Hardware Test, disk utility, Applecare Techtool Deluxe --- it passes all the tests. I tried repairing from the install disk and even reinstalling the operating system, but it won't let me. The only thing that works temporarily is resetting thr PMU. If I do that before I start up the machine it works fine, but as soon as I shut down I get the same error message. I'm hoping that I don't have to take it back the Apple Store. I would greatly appreciate anyone input. I've already spent about 5 hours looking online and numerous sites with not much luck except the PMU reset. Below is one of the logs from the Kernel error.

    THANK YOU!

....But I ran the Hardware Test Disk and it scanned everything including the RAM and it was fine. Do you think it's something one of the Technicans at the Genius Bar could have done when they were replacing the logic board? Because I never got this error before that. Also, my battery won't charge right now either. I've only had this machine for 3 years and it's already needed 2 logic boards and they replaced the harddrive with the first logic board. It's not even used everyday!! This is turning into a very expensive paper weight. I love Macs but I will think twice before I ever get another one!!
The only reason I wanted to fix it myself is because the closest Apple Store is about an hour and a half away. And I don't want to send it in to Apple because my warranty has expired.

Did you add any third-party RAM? It could be memory related.

  • IMac 5K random kernel panics and rebooting

My brand new iMac 5k (I received 10 days ago) is randomly freezing, then showing kernel panic message and rebooting itself. It happens almost everyday at work with no apparent reason. Already tried reinstallling OS X, SMC and PRAM reset with no luck. The iMac is configured to never sleep, and it happens while using it, so no related with wake-up problems I read everywhere.
it's a maxed out iMac 5K (i7, 32GB of RAM, 3TB FD and the 295X 4GB VRAM) with updated Yosemite.
No peripherals attached (except an external USB 3.0 Lacie hard drive with video files for editing), no uncommon sofrware installed (only Final, Avid, Adobe Suite and Skype, Dropbox, etc.) and still happening randomly.
I had a chat with AppleCare and they told me I have 2 options:
    - Taking it to service for revision.
    - Asking for a refund or replacement.
Of course, I will not take it to revision (it's brand new!), but I don't know if ask for refund or replacement for a new one, because I readed too many iMac 5K users with similar problems. Does anyone knows if it is a common problem with iMacs 5K? If I ask for a replacement and still happens, can I ask then for a refund?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • I7 Grey Screen of Death Kernel Panic repeatedly!!! graphic switching???

Hi I bought the new i7 17" MBP in April and everything has been working great until last week. I started getting the grey screen of death and it would happen about twice a day or more everyday since it started. I saw another post on here about these computers freezing, but mine is a complete kernel panic, not just a freeze. Many people seem to think the freezing problem is due to the automatic graphics switching, so I disabled mine this morning, and so far there hasn't been another panic. Also, my screenshots came out as all black images, and applications and folders wouldn't open when I clicked on them, I had to use right-click open. Both of these issues cleared up after restarting but I kept getting the grey screen until I disabled the graphics switching. Is anybody else having any of these problems??? I ran disk utility and it says everything is okay. I don't want to go through the erase and reinstall or whatever when I am about 95% positive that is not causing the problem. Hopefully I won't have another kernel panic, but even if I don't, are we just supposed to keep the graphics switching off forever or until Apple fixes the problem?

i am having the exact same issue.
turn off the switching, no panic.
