Kernel upgrade strategy question

First of all congrats to the community for a successful upgrade to 2.6.31.  I had the usual mismatch in timing this morning with Virtualbox, and while tempting to remove VB, patience prevailed for a few hours and upgrades for VB as well as the kernel showed, and all worked smoothly.
My Question:
Why do we upgrade the primary kernel AND the fallback at the same time?  For example ubuntu retains the old kernels in menu.lst in case of problems.
I suspect i know at least part of the answer, that it is related to the rolling release model, and that apps designed for the newer kernel might not work with the old one anyway.  However would having a fallback on the prior kernel not at least offer a means to boot up and look at your system in event of panic?

That's not a fallback kernel. It's a fallback initrd. The only difference is that the fallback contains every driver that could be useful for booting, rather than just the ones detected as needed when they are built.
If you want an actual fallback kernel, install kernel26-lts.
Edit: too slow.

  • Kernel upgrade strategy

    Hi,
I have to upgrade Kernel for our ECC 6.0 system. Our database is MS SQL. & it is running on windows.Currently we are on kernel95
Latest available kernel in Market place is dw_160-20001354.sar . As per I know we have to apply sapexe & sapexedb.
    1.     Please let me know the procedure that How to apply kernel
    2.     what is the pre-requisite
    3.     what is post upgrade steps
    4.     if I will apply only dw_160-20001354.sar.I think we have to apply only this file.
    Points for helpful answer.
    Regards
    Santosh

    Dear
    1) set system message
    2) download kernel (sapexe, sapexedb), tp and R3trans (check unicode of non unicode kernel using disp+work -version)
    3) stop SAP dialog instances
    4) stop SAP central instance + db
    5) stop saposcol
    6) stop Oracle listener
    7) stop startsapsrv
    8) check if all processes are stopped
    9) clean shared memory (cleanipc <instancenumber>)
    10) backup old kernel
    11) copy SAPCAR to SAPCAR<new name> (else you will try to overwrite SAPCAR by the new SAPCAR of the kernel files)
    12) run saproot script (on unix saproot.sh <SID> <DBSID>)
    13) startup listener
    14) startup central instance + db
    15) startup dialog instance
    16) check system running correctly (transactions SICK,SM21,SM50 for example)
    17) remove system message
    Reward points if useful
    Kind regards

  • A noobish question about kernel upgrades

Hi, I am a noob lol. I just installed Arch a couple of weeks ago and I like it a lot. Seems like a lot more fun than most other distros I've tried. Very tight, fast and flexible. I've been through a couple of upgrades now including one kernel upgrade and everything is running very well and I am interested in keeping it that way. (I'm in Gnome with zero disk activity within about 10 - 15 seconds after I chain load it from grub2.)
Anyway, I am currently using kernel 2.6.35.7 and I am very happy with it. However, when I do a pacman -Syu it is including kernel lts-2.6.32.24 in its list of proposed upgrades which I decline. So...let's make my first question a dumb one. Why? Other distros I am using or have tried always prefer the most recent package version unless I force it to do otherwise, so this just strikes me as a bit odd.
    Thanks.

Hey thanks everybody. I really appreciate the replies! I figured out where it came from. I installed from the 2010.05 i686 core iso and selected base-devel, the lts kernel is part of that package.
Anyway, it wasn't really a problem as much as a riddle. I started out with kernel 2.6.34.x and pacman was asking me to upgrade 2.6.32.x, so I'm like wtf?  I was starting to wonder about early onset Alzhiemer's. Guess I should have Googled more. I'm coming from Debianland so little things like Arch's package designations are still a little confusing to me. I have a lot more reading to do.
BTW, I love this distro's wiki, really outstanding documentation. I think I'm going to hit Powell's or Amazon up for a couple of books though, my eyes get really heavy and blurry while reading on screen. And while I'm on that topic, does anyone have any recommendations for comprehensive entry level books on Arch?
    Thanks again everybody!

  • ABAP+JAVA Kernel Upgrade

    Hi,
I am planning to deploy SPS12 against solution manager system (ABAP+JAVA).
But I have one quick question on Kernel Upgrade unicode system..
SPS 12 Minimum Kernel Patch level should be 102, we are at 95 (NW2004s/AIX 5.3)
Please suggest me the best approach :
    1)))
    1. ABAP Kernel Upgrade
    2. IGS upgrade
    3. Import ABAP Support Packages
    4.Upgrade JSPM Patch
5.Deploy Java support packages via JSPM
    2)))
    1.Upgrade JSPM Patch
    2.Kernel Upgrade using JSPM
3.Deploy Java support packages via JSPM
    4.Import ABAP support packages
I heard that JSPM can import ABAP support packages, is this true (for SPS12)??
Please advice the best and quick approach at step by step at high level.
    Regards
    Srinivas

    Hello Srinivas,
As of now, the JSPM cannot be used to apply the ABAP Support packages and it has to be applied separately using the SPAM/SINT. So, I believe the first option mentioned by you is the right way to go ahead.

  • Upgrade strategy for 2008 Unibody: Comments wanted

Short-time lurker, first time poster. :-)
I have a 2008 unibody Macbook (2.4 GHz w/ 4 GB of RAM). It's not my primary computer, but it is my primary travel laptop. Currently it is running Snow Leopard and a Vista Bootcamp partition. I attempted Parallels, but was disappointed with the performance and memory utilization. I'm trying to put together
an upgrade strategy to get another 2-3 years of good practical work out of the machine, as it's in fairly good shape.
Usage for the machine is primarily in OS X while around the house, and a mix of 75% Windows / 25% OS X while traveling, due to the need to run some proprietary apps that are Windows-only. Most are processor and memory bound, rather than GPU bound, which is why I'm able to keep using this machine despite the relatively poor Nvidia GPU.
I've read a fair bit, and decided on getting a larger SSD (300 - 500 GB), probably the OWC 480 GB SandForce-based model, and upgrading to 8 GB of RAM. I'd also like to migrate the BootCamp install to Windows 7, because Vista really quite *****, and I'm on Win 7 everywhere else. However, I have a couple of questions I was hoping y'all could help me with / provide opinions and feedback.
    1) Should I wait for the release of Mountain Lion, and do a clean install from a custom USB/DVD? Or should I do a clean reinstall of Snow Leopard, then upgrade to Mountain Lion through the App Store? I am primarily concerned about Boot Camp.
    2) Recommendation on an SSD: My understanding is that this particular MB revision is SATA II, so the best I can hope for is 1.5 GB throughput because it will be split with the SuperDrive. I was looking at an OWC Mercury Electra 6G in 480 GB (though that may be overkill). I wanted enough space for a comfortable Windows and OS X install for bootcamp (and to re-try Parallels), and going with 240 GB seemed a bit...sparse.
    3) Many of the modeling files I use are already pre-compressed to save space (it's not uncommon for a single simulation to use 4-5 GB grid files and produce 20-30 GB of "compressed" output. Should I stay away from SandForce, or just bite the bullet and pay the higher cost for the OWC Extreme drives?
    4) I've read mixed reports about the ability for 2008 unibody Macbooks to address the full 8 GB of RAM, and instead only sees 6 GB. Is this true/false? They don't make 3 GB sticks, so I'm upgrading anyway, but it would be nice to know.  I'm okay with only seeing 6 GB, but I'm curious whether folks have observed serious stability issues with an upgrade to 8 GB?
    5) Are there any issues WRT Windows 7 through BootCamp on a non-Apple SSD that I should be worried about? I figured I could use TRIM while in BootCamp, and not worry about it in OS X. It still seems to be a toss-up (who do you believe!) whether TRIM makes a difference on SandForce SSDs or not, yes?
    6) Any stability issues with FileVault2 full-disk encryption on SSDs in Lion I should worry about? Planning on upgrading to Mountain Lion as soon as it is available.
Thanks for putting up with teh n00b questions.

Get a regular HDD for  your computer. It should be a notebook sized drive, SATA II-3.0 Gb/s, 7200 RPM. A Seagate XT500 Hybrid is a good trade-off of performance and price.

  • Is a reboot necessary after a kernel upgrade? [SOLVED/Answered =)]

Hey folks, longtime arch user (since ~2006), first time registration/post.
Just a dead-simple question: is it necessary for me to reboot my Arch systems after 'pacman -Syu' kernel upgrades? I've always done it out of sheer habit coming from a WIndows Sysadmin world where every darn update needs a reboot.
    Thanks in advance.

Wow, thanks y'all for the fast replies. Sounds like my instincts were right .
I have to say I'm blown away by the reliability of this Linux distro. Like I implied, my day job has for years required me to interact with Windows client & server OSes on a daily basis, and the level of random issues/headaches that crop up in that ecosystem is rather astounding. In contrast, I've had as of yet zero problems with my 2 Arch servers. I've had the same essential configs since the first installations of them years ago, and barring a couple reinstalls due to hard drive failures they've been smooth as silk the whole time. Kudos to that.

  • Kernel Upgrade

    Hi Gurus,
I have questions regarding kernel upgarade. I have downloaded db dependent and independent .sar files and put it in new folder outside the directory usr/sap/SID/sys/exe/uc. Now my questions:
    1. Is it ok to uncar .sar files in my own directory?
    2. After unpacking .sar files, do i need to transfer the files to the directory usr/sap/SID/sys/exe/uc?
I need your expert opinion on this since this is the first time I do kernel upgrade. If anyone happens to have document on kernel upgrade in Windows, much appreciated.
    Regards,
    Eleazar

  • Kernel Upgrade reflecting in application servers

    Hello All,
I have question regarding kernel upgrade .
while performing kernel upgrade ,we uncar the files and replace the exe file in central instance (/sapmnt/<sid>/) .
After restarting the server , it is automatically getting reflected in appl.servers too.
Can any one tell me the work around beyond it .On what basis this is exactly getting updated by default in appl. servers too ?
    Best Regards
    Rakesh

If you look in the start profile of the application servers you will find the sapcpe program that runs at startup.  This program is responsible for going out and looking to see if there is a newer kernel available at the CI.  If it does see a newer version it will copy the correct files out to the application server.

  • Kernel Upgrade Impact on ABAP perspective ?

We are planning for Kernel upgrade. I like to know what kind of impact on ABAP point of view.
My question is after the upgrade what are things i may needs to check from abaper perspective ?
I don't know is right to ask this question in abap general forum. may be our abap friends have something to share.
    a®s
    Any Info ?

@gautam : i've read that before kernel upgrade we have to use "SGEN" transaction to generate objects with available load and then after kernel upgrade is done we have to regenerate objects from last generation..
can you please explain why do we need to do this...
as per my understanding it has got to do something with ABAP consistency....
but why excatly this is done..can anyone tell..

  • Kernel Upgrade for all App systems

    Hi,
I have to do a Kernel upgrade soon. I have one CI DB cluster and 4 App servers. Do I have to upgrade the kernel on each app system and the CI? I mean, do I have to copy the files to the RUN folder for each App server and for the CI?
    Thanks

    Hi
Ensure that you are using the SAP kernel recommended together with the latest SAP stacks for your product. For detailed information, see SAP Service Marketplace: http://service.sap.com/sp-stacks
SAP releases Support Package Stacks, including kernel patches, on a regular basis (2-4 times a year). Therefore, we also suggest you create a strategy to implement these stacks periodically. In special cases, you may need to use a more recent kernel patch than the one shipped with the latest Support Package Stack for your product like in case of traces.
Yes you need to update the patch level of all the servers in the system.
    Hope this helps!!
    Kind Regards
    Esha Rajpal

    you get the idea.
Now upon inspection of my system I found that my /lib/modules/3.3.8-1-ARCH/kernel/ looks like this:
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 Jun 5 09:30 extramodules -> ../extramodules-3.3-ARCH
    drwxr-xr-x 12 root root 4096 Jun 5 09:29 kernel

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 355147 Jun 5 09:29 modules.symbols.bin
so it makes sense that the directory and files are not found. The question is where is the problem?
Was my Arch web install bad or is there a problem with today's kernel upgrade?

    Terminator & Gcool,
Thank you both for your help.
I ended up following the link Terminator posted in his reply and I was able to solve the problem.
Unlike pineapple-biku (in the aforementioned thread) I did not chroot my machine I just:
    pacman -S udev
    pacman -S mkinitcpio
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    pacman -S linux
    and that solved the problem.
It's odd, however, the number of people having similar problems upgrading the kernel ... seems like there is a bug somewhere that seems to
affect people that "meet certain criteria".
    Thanks gain guys!!

Note that all the missing modules are '.ko', rather than the gzipped '.ko.gz' that you should expect with the arch kernel. This indicates that depmod failed when you installed the kernel.

  • Different tp r3trans versions in kernel upgrade phase

    Hi,
we're actually in an kernel upgrade phase (R/3 6.40 from 175 to 196). The new kernel version will be deployed first on DEV system, and after evaluation/troubleshooting the PRD will be done. The tp and r3trans programs are also upgraded.
My question is the following : is it possible to do transports from DEV to PRD when you're working with different tp and r3trans versions (during the upgrade phase) ?
    Kind regards,
    Erik

    Hi Erik,
There is no problem if you transport,we have recently changed the tp and r3trans in our DEV and have done many transport everthing worked fine,no problems. You can proceed.
Make sure you back up the sys/exe directory.
    Reward points if helpfull.
    Regards,
    Vamshi.

  • Kernel Upgrade in MSCS cluster

    Hi all,
I have to do Kernel Upgrade in MSCS environment.
Please suggest me how to do?
    Regards,
    shanker C

    Hi Shanker,
Given below is the procedure to perform kernel upgrade in MSCS environment
Activities to be done at OS level
    1. Stop all instances and take all the resource offline(including windows cluster service) in cluster administrator.
    2. Unpack the archives to a working directory and take backup of usr\sap\<SAPSID>\SYS\exe\uc(nuc)\<Platform>:and replace all old files with the new one.

  • System less responsive after udev/kernel upgrade

Yeah, another udev/kernel upgrade question.  After upgrading udev and the kernel yesterday my terminal is less responsive.  For example, scrolling is slow and jerky, and uses an inordanite amount of cpu.  ls /usr/bin will cause the cpu usage to spike ~70% which is much higher than normal.  I can cause the cpu to go to 100%  by scrolling quickly in vim.  I do not see this in firefox, however.  Scrolling there is responsive and does not use any additional cpu beyond what it took before the update.
I really don't know where to start to troubleshoot this - the only thing I have noticed is that the speedstep-centrino module is not loading any longer.
    pmorris@arch:~ $ sudo modprobe speedstep-centrino
FATAL: Error inserting speedstep_centrino (/lib/modules/2.6.15-ARCH/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/speedstep-centrino.ko): Device or resource busy
This is on an ibm thinkpad T40p.  I am still getting cpu scaling, but the system is generally less responsive.  It may be taking longer to scale up the cpu frequency on demand.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks.

tpowa wrote:perhaps a bug in how udev loads the cpufreq modules. can you tell me which modules you would need? then just blacklist the modules you don't need...
Thanks, this worked.  Prior to the upgrade I was using the speedstep-centrino module, and loading it in the modules array in /etc/rc.conf.  After the upgrade the acpi-cpufreq module was being autoloaded at boot prior to my trying to load the speedstep-centrino module, hence the "device or resource busy" failure when I tried to load the speedstep module.  After blacklisting all modules listed in /lib/modules/2.6.15-ARCH/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq except the speedstep-centrino, things are working fine.  The correct module is loaded at boot time.
Is there a cleaner method to achieve this other than blacklisting all unwanted modules?

  • Support Pack Upgrade Strategy

    Hi Experts,
I am trying to develop a strategy for testing SP upgrades in development and "okaying" them for migration into production.
What steps do you normally take to ensure your system works as intended and the update is really for production?
I would think to go through and verify all of the changes from the SAP note which contains the SP detail, but what else? It is often the case that implementing a SP has an effect on other functionality.
Please share your thoughts and experiences.
    Thanks,
    Grace Rae

    Hi Grace,
Firstly, this question should be posted in the Basis forums You will have more experts who dealt with these activities there.
Regarding the support pack upgrade strategy, we would normally implement it in the test systems, and closely monitor the system performance in peak and normal hours, background jobs, and any other issues that are highlighted during the monitoring period. If there are no issues reported by the functional testing team, we will go ahead implementing it in production system.
    Hope this helps!

    Raghu
