L2TP | Logon Failure with domain name but success with .local

Hi,
I am trying to use L2TP and failing. When trying within the work LAN using myserver.local it works a treat. When I try myserver.company.co.uk it asks me to log-in then fails with a very brief message giving nothing away.
I managed to get PPTP to work fine (once I had opened the AFP port on my firewalled router) but would prefer to use L2TP. I have seen others are having the same problem but can find no solution to sort it for me.
SETUP:
10.5.6 fully updated server plugged into switch running usual standalone services plus DNS. Netgear ADSL router plugged into switch and providing firewall, DHCP and NAT. Ports open and passing to myserver: 4500 UDP, 500 UDP, 1701 UDP (and 1723 TCP).
myserver.company.co.uk is pointing to our static IP, from our ISPs DNS.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I'M NO EXPERT BUT IF YOU ARE USING KERBEROS TO LOG IN AND YOU ARE GETTING GENERIC DNS THROUGH YOUR ISP THEN YOULL HAVE TO USE CHAP TO LOGIN. I DON'T KNOW IF THIS APPLIES TO YOUR SITUATION BUT THOSE ARE ACOUPLE OF THINGS I CAN THINK OF.
BEST,
EMACKIII

  • "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password" even with correct Credentials

    I have networked PCs before many times successfully, so this is not my first time trying to network PCs in a home environment. Though I’m wondering if Windows 8.1 is part of the problem.
    I would have thought that for sure, until one of the new laptops running W8.1 would not connect to any of the other three PCs/Laptops running W8.1. Yet these other three W8.1 PCs/Laptops CAN connect to this laptop. Then it gets a little more interesting:
    this same laptop that couldn’t connect to those three W8.1 PCs/Laptops, CAN connect to a Windows 7 desktop, and a XP Laptop, and those two can also connect back to it without issue. It’s almost like my network is divided in half, and only half can talk to
    each other. But then when I thought it couldn’t get any more interesting, I realized the first three W8.1 PCs/Laptops can talk to the others, it’s just that the others (W8.1 Laptop, W7 Desktop, XP Laptop) can’t talk back to them without getting the error,
    "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password” even though the username and password are 100% correct.
    I don’t fully understand this error, because on the surface, it’s just WRONG!
    My username and password are correct, but it appears something somewhere is interfering or hijacking the authentication process. Three of the computers (laptops) are brand new, just purchased last week and setup this week. The HostPC is also fairly new,
    just purchased last month.
    I am not using a HomeGroup, and have removed all computers that were part of a HomeGroup. I have enabled file sharing and network discovery and enabled “Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers” on all PCs.
    I have DSL and am using the wireless modem provided by my ISP which has router functionality built into it. It is a Sagemcom Model: F@ST 1704N.
    All computers are connected wirelessly. Time is correct on all PCs. I cannot use Group Policy, since they're all Standard or Home edition. DHCP is enabled and all computers are on the same subnet, using the 192.168.254.x range of ip addresses.
    The six computers are as follows: (I figured this may make is easier to visualize the layout)
    HostPC: HP Desktop W8.1
    PC Name: DrsBlend
    U/N: DrsBlend  p/w: 123456 (not showing my real password)
    PC1: HP Laptop W8.1
    PC Name: DrsBlend-1
    U/N: DrsBlend    P/W: 123456
    PC2: HP Laptop W8.1
    PC Name: DrsBlend-2
    U/N: DrsBlend    P/W: 123456
    PC3: HP Laptop W8.1
    PC Name: DrsBlend-3
    U/N: DrsBlend    P/W: 123456
    PC4: HP Desktop W7 SP1
    PC Name: DrsBlend-4
    U/N: DrsBlend    P/W: 123456
    PC5: Dell Laptop XP SP3
    PC Name: DrsBlend-5
    U/N: DrsBlend    P/W: 123456
    Every PC stated above has the same user name and password and is logged-in with the username, DrsBlend and the password 123456. The "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password” happens when trying to access HostPC, PC1, or PC2 from PC3, PC4, or
    PC5.
    The HostPC can see and connect to all the PCs, but only PC1 and PC2 can talk back or access the HostPC.
    It’s like the HostPC and PC1, and PC2 are in their own little clique, and can talk back and forth to each other. Those three PCs can also talk to PC3, PC4, and PC5 as well, but PC3, PC4, and PC5 cannot talk back to them (HostPC, PC1, PC2).
    Profile corruption? I would have entertained that thought, but the fact the first three PCs can access and talk to one another kind of defeats that idea, and the fact the PCs were just recently setup.
    Firewall? Disabled, and disabled TrendMicro with no change. With them on/off, the first three PCs can still talk to each other and the rest of the PCs.
    Anyone have any additional suggestions?

    Hi,
    How did you connect to other PCs? Do you use RDP to connect to other PCs? If so, check the version of the RDP, as I know, some low version RDP can't connect to higher Windows like 8.1.
    And could you please tell us the detailed information about how the six PCs connect to the home network?
    Can PC1, PC2, PC3 ping back to host PC, PC1 and PC2?
    You can also run command " rundll32.exe keymgr.dll, KRShowKeyMgr " view the credentials stored in your PC,check whether this issue is related with some old credentials stored in your system.

    Yes you can. Make sure that domains configured to use different multicast address. WLS uses multicast for communications between nodes in domain.
              although your configuration will work, you could have troubles if you going to execute inter-domain calls between domains/servers with the same names.

  • EffectiveUserName Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password

    Hi
    I am trying to connect Sharepoint 2013 services (performancepoint , excel services) to SSAS 2012 using the EffectiveUserName.
    I was getting a error message regarding conencting the datasource and when checking profiler it was saying Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.
    On the SSAS server i tried using EffectiveUserName in the additional Connection Parameters and it failed for the above reason. I also tried my username as well as the sharepoint service account
    the sharepoint service account and my username are both server admins.
    When I try using the EffectiveUserName in the additional Connection Parameters on another server I can connect with no problems.
    What seems to be the different with server where I am getting the error message?
    Regards

    Hi aivoryuk,
    According to your description, you get the "unknown user name or bad password" error when using EffectiveUserName in Connection parameter to connect Analysis Services. Right?
    In this scenario, if you use a connection string to create the data connection, and the connection string contains an effective user field, the EffectiveUserName feature will override the user-supplied effective user value with the system-supplied value.
    On this server, you may use a domain user to run the SSAS. So it will show the "unknown user name or bad password." However, on the other server, it may use system build-in account to run SSAS. Please refer to link below to check the steps for using
    Analysis Services EffectiveUserName in SharePoint Server 2013:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj219741(v=office.15).aspx
    If you have any question, please feel free to ask.

    Hi thanks for the link but it just shows how to set effective user name in sharepoint which I know how to do.
    In SSMS and when I connect to the SSAS server and I select options and then I go to the addional connection parameters tab i set Effectivename ="domain\username" on once server I get the error mesage but on the other I don't.
    I'm not clear from you explanation as to why this is?

  • Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.

    Hai,
    I am trying to move the file from application server to folder in non-sap server using DOS commands in a batch file.
    Commands in the batch file is below.
    E:
    cd E:\HSBC\HSBC_IN\
    for /f %%a IN ('dir /b *.xml') do (
    move %%a
    host name\HSBC\Temp
    exit;
    I have created a command in SM69(E:\HSBC\hsbc.bat) and trying to execute, it is properly executing in Development server and file is moving. Same is not executing in Quality server. Its giving an error as Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. External program terminated with exit code 1. For that destination folder i have given permission for both Delelopment server and Quality server.
    Please help on this issue with high priority .
    <priority is downgraded>
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    May be my suggestion is a stupid one but still you can just look into it if nothing works out.
    See the non-SAP server you are mentioning here, should also be same type I mean if  you are moving file from SAP-DEV then the non-SAP server also should be of type DEV, SAP-Quality to Non-SAP Quality etc
    Check this.

  • Two methods with same name but different return type?

    Can I have two methods with same name but different return type in Java? I used to do this in C++ (method overloading or function overloading)
    Here is my code:
    import java.io.*;
    public class Test{
    public static void main(String ar[]){
    try{
    //I give an invalid file name to throw IO error.
    File file = new File("c:/invalid file name becasue of spaces");
    FileWriter writer = new FileWriter(file ,true);
    writer.write("Test");
    writer.close();
    } catch (IOException IOe){
         System.out.println("Failure");
    //call first method - displays stack trace on screen
         showerr(NPe);
    //call second method - returns stack trace as string
            String msg = showerr(NPe);
            System.out.println(msg);
    } // end of main
    public static void showerr(Exception e){
         StringWriter sw = new StringWriter();
         PrintWriter pw = new PrintWriter(sw);
         e.printStackTrace(pw);
         try{
         pw.close();
         sw.close();
         catch (IOException IOe){
         IOe.printStackTrace();
         String stackTrace = sw.toString();
         System.out.println("Null Ptr\n" +  stackTrace );
    }//end of first showerr
    public static String showerr(Exception e){
         StringWriter sw = new StringWriter();
         PrintWriter pw = new PrintWriter(sw);
         e.printStackTrace(pw);
         try{
         pw.close();
         sw.close();
         catch (IOException IOe){
         IOe.printStackTrace();
         return sw.toString();
    }//end of second showerr
    } // end of class
    [\code]

    Overloading is when you have multiple methods that have the same name and the same return type but take different parameters. See example
    public class Overloader {
         public String buildError(Exception e){
              java.util.Date now = new java.util.Date() ;
              java.text.DateFormat format = java.text.DateFormat.getInstance() ;
              StringBuffer buffer = new StringBuffer() ;
              buffer.append(format.format(now))
                   .append( " : " )
                   .append( e.getClass().getName() )
                   .append( " : " )
                   .append( e.getMessage() ) ;
              return buffer.toString() ;
         public String buildError(String msg){
              java.util.Date now = new java.util.Date() ;
              java.text.DateFormat format = java.text.DateFormat.getInstance() ;
              StringBuffer buffer = new StringBuffer() ;
              buffer.append(format.format(now))
                   .append( " : " )
                   .append( msg ) ;
              return buffer.toString() ;
         public String buildErrors(int errCount){
              java.util.Date now = new java.util.Date() ;
              java.text.DateFormat format = java.text.DateFormat.getInstance() ;
              StringBuffer buffer = new StringBuffer() ;
              buffer.append(format.format(now))
                   .append( " : " )
                   .append( "There have been " )
                   .append( errCount )
                   .append( " errors encountered.")  ;
              return buffer.toString() ;
    }Make sense ???

  • Windows Security Error! Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password

    We RANDOMLY can't access one of the computers in our company's network. It is now saying - Windows Security - Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. It doesn't matter what I put in for a user name and pw it still doesn't work.
    Any help is much appreciated!

    To be added, if it is part of domain, is this computer had local account? If so, try to logon local account for test, If sucessfully, follow Cyber's suggestion remove PC from domain and rejoin it for test.
    If not, you can try to boot system into recovery mode and choose recovery computer for test.
    Press F8 at startup, then choose Recovery system.

  • Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password... ?Authenticator class?

    I'm connecting to a MS Exchange server (internally) but I'm getting the following error:
    ........Non SSL........
    POP3: connecting to host "xxxx.xxx.com", port 110
    S: +OK Microsoft Exchange POP3 server version 5.5.2658.25 ready

    I can get my email using Outlook because I don't have to provide a password to connect. So I left it blank in my program but I still can't
    login. Does this mean that I need to use the authenticator class?
    Here's the code I'm using to connect:

  • Intel vPro with wired 802.1x issue with domain name

    Hello guys,
    this issue is may not related to SCCM directly, but intel forums are really poor so i´d like to ask here...
    The Case: We are currently provisioning our vPro chips with SCCM SP2 R3 and almost everthing worked as expected (Provisioning OK, OOB Console OK, PowerControl OK even TLS and Kerberos are working. But there is an issue with the 802.1x authentication. It
    seems the vPro chips are not using the correct domain name. Lets say our DNS domain name is
    vpro.com and the NETBIOS Name is coprvro . There are no child or other domains. vPro chips are presenting now
    vpro\COMPUTERNAME$iME instead of vpro.com oder corpvro
    so the Radius Server (Windows Server 2008 R2 - NPS) is saying ReasonCode 7 "...domain is not existing...". AuthenticationType and EAP Type are correct. Usually user- and computeraccounts are using
    corpvro as domain name.

    Hi Dan,
    thank you for your reply. I've already done this in the second place using the SDK and winrm ($8021XProfileInstance.GetProperty("Domain")). I've no idea were SCCM is getting this domain name from. Its cutting off the top level domain extension,
    may be SCCM is assuming that this equals the NETBIOS domain name but that is not the case. This is only a guess, in detail I need to know in fact on what basis SCCM is choosing the domain name, then i can fix this...
    Intels SCS putting the correct NETBIOS domain name in the amt config, used certificates are the same...

    So any one give me the  exact soluction for this problem,
    Using service account then i will get the soluction or what?
    pls help me out it is urgent based.
    Regards
    Thanks!

    Hi Ychinnari,
    I have tested on my local environment and can reproduce the issue, as
    Vaishu00547 mentioned that the issue can be caused by the Execution Account you have configured in the Reporting Services Configuration Manager is not correct, Please update the Username and Password and restart the reporting services.
    Please also find more details information about when to use the execution account, if possible,please also not specify this account:
    This account is used under special circumstances when other sources of credentials are not available:
    When the report server connects to a data source that does not require credentials. Examples of data sources that might not require credentials include XML documents and some client-side database applications.
    When the report server connects to another server to retrieve external image files or other resources that are referenced in a report.
    Execution Account (SSRS Native Mode)
    If you still have any problem, please feel free to ask.

    Hi All, I am using iphone in UAE and ipad in India usinging same apple id. Earlier I could do imessage  to my Ipad with different name but with  software update,I am unable to do, as signing id for the iphone and ipad is same.How to restore back

    I believe because you migrated from a Nokia to an iPhone you need to register the Bn phone number with your Apple ID so it can be used for iMessage. The Pn number seems to be the only one registered
    Go here > https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/
    Manage your Apple ID and see if that does the trick
    Hope that helps
