LabVIEW Book for advanced users? German or english

Hello,
I am searching for a book about LabVIEW (ideally 7.1. but later versions are also ok) for advanced users.
All the books I find on amazon are introductions for beginers.
I have done the LabVIEW Tutorial and I am programming since a couple of years, so my level ist something like beginer II or intermediate I (compared to LabVIEW classes).
Now I would like to improve my programing style and learn something about different VI architectures, professional design, performance optimizing, etc.
Are there any good books in english or german?

  • E52 bug list for advanced users

I wanted to start the compilation of a bug list for advanced users. Here is my first suggestion:
    1. SMS Functionality:
When trying to send SMS to a distribution list, the phone interface will ask you to choose between number and email addresses, even though the phone does understand that this is a SMS and not an email ("Text Message" appering on top)
This happens even when the contact has one phone number only (and an email address) in the phonebook
This does not happen when you use PC Suite to do the same task
    2. Mail for Exchange client:
I will not go through the many -most already reported- bugs and general instability of the client. However, I will mention two that I have not seen reported anywhere so far:
When forwarding emails, only the header (From/To/Date/Subject) is forwarded. The rest of the text, as well as possible atachments are not forwarded. This is happening -to my epxerience- every time you try to forward an email
The client doesn't provide information (like the previous, installable client for devices such as E51, E71, etc.) as to when was the last time that sync took place, while it also doesn't show a real-time progress like the previous one. These two functionalities were very useful for controlling the Mail for Exchange process and understanding proactively if there was an issue. I consider these a must for any Business user (going through the log files to understand the same thing is obviously utterly impractical)
The client doesn't synchronise the "Deleted Items" folder from the mail server but only locally (which means it includes emails that were deleted only from the device itself).
The synchronization of the folders other than "Inbox" should be happening ad-hoc whenever the user is accessing these folders and requesting a sunchronization. Otherwise, we see the phenomenon of extremely lengthy synchronizations
    3.  Screen/Display:
It would be nice, when using the smallest font, to also accordingly compress the menu choices, in order to be able to fit more on the screen. Otherwise, with the present implementation, the fonts get smaller, but the relevant menu icons are not, resulting in an assymetrical look
    4. Ovi suite:
As a general comment, I would like to mention that -apart from totally unknown NOKIA policy with regards to Ovi vis-a-vis PC Suite- it is not appropriate for Ovi to contain less functionality than PC Suite (I am referring to SMS presentation, etc.). In general, I find Ovi much clunkier and more clumsy than PC Suite which has actually evolved well over the years as the absolute PC phone tool (and still a differentiator for Nokia). So, NOKIA, please do not screw up PC Suite for something that may be "hype" accoridng to you, but is used as a tool by many of your customers.
    5. Log:
As in previous phones/firmware versions, when setting the Log to 30 days, only 7 or ten days are actually retained. Maybe related to phone memory, but in any case it is a nuissance
    6. SMS/VMs/Missed calls notifications:
This is not a bug, but at least personally, I preffered the way the SMS/VMs/Missed calls notifications were displayed in the previous devices (E51, etc.), just below the active stand-by applications "ribbon", instead of at the bottom of the screen. The new implementation makes it harder to access these items than before (at least for me)
I appeal to NOKIA to consider and fix these issues in the next firmware release(s).
    Timos Tsokanis

@Timos , great compilation. I hope Nokia will work to resolve these quickly.
I have been using phone since last 2-3 days and find few things in Email client really annoying.
Also I want to understand few settings in Email client (version 2.1.0). They have made settings too complicated.
1)Any folder except Inbox doesn't show unread email count in brackets next to folder names.
i.e. If i delete or move 2 emails which I have not read to any folder(Deleted etc) , then deleted folder should be like Deleted(2). But right now it doesnt show anything. Strange.
I have checked with E72 and this bug is not there.
    2) I have Gmail, Hotmail and Ovi mail as part of Nokia Messaging. But only Gmail and Hotmail actually show up when I open Messaging. All 3 show up if I open Email.
3)What does "Download Notification" under Global settings do? Notification icon control?
    4) Why my Name field in Mailbox setting is picked from account at email.nokia.com, also even though secure connection is Yes under server settings in email.nokia.com, for same email its No in email client.
    5) Why I am not allowed to change settings in "What to sync" , e.g. Hide email older than
    6) what do settings "synchronise new updates" , "timed sync" do? No explaining in help.
    7) Setting ->Gmail(or any other)->Account settings->Account Info, why number is blank? Also please make this work with destinations support. Also connectivity setting should be in global settings.

  • Address books for another user sharing my computer for now

At this time I am sharing this computer with one other person ..I have set up and named another address book for them.
Is there a way that their email addresses do not get added too mine.. is there a setting where we can set it up so each one has there emails being added to their own addy book.. At the moment there emails are being added too mine... this problem will be ongoing fpr a period of time....
    Thank you in advance. :)

''re: At this time I am sharing this computer with one other person .''
Usually, when people share a computer, each user has their own User Account which they logon using a password.
This means that Thunderbird then runs in that User Account and creates a profile in that User Account which holds all the Profile data, emails, passwords, address books etc specifically for that users email address mail accounts.
So then no one can read each others emails nor access other peoples passwords and they can use their own address books.
So if you are sharing a computer and sharing a Profile, then it is advisable that you do not have any stored / remembered passwords, unless that person is eg: spouse and you do not mind them having full access to all your personal stuff.
You have a couple of Options:
'''1.''' Create User Accounts on your computer so that each user has their own User Account, Create a Thunderbird Profile folder and set up mail accounts storing personal emails and address books.
This is the only method offering best security.
'''2. ''' Create another Profile for the other person. then create mail account for that Profile. This will then have it's own folders, address book.
Use Profile Manager to create another Profile.
    http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager
Make sure to uncheck the box 'Don't ask at startup' to force it to ask which Profile to use.
Any user can still access any profile.
    '''3. ''' In current situation.
Stop auto saving outgoing email addresses that are not in the address books as this uses only one setting per Profile.
Tools > Options > Composition > Addressing tab
uncheck: 'Automatically add outgoing email addresses to my'
    click on OK
Then you would need to use an Addon in order to be able to select a specific address book when you wish to add the email address/contact to an address book. At the moment, if you click on the FROM header email address or right click and select 'Add to address book', this adds to the default address book called 'Personal Address Book'. This you cannot change because you are using the same User account and Profile.
    But with the addon 'MorefunctionforAddressBook'
Right click on eg: From header and choose > Save recipients addresses' > as Contacts
This allows you to select the address book you require.
    Addon 'MorefunctionforAddressBook':
    * https://nic-nac-project.org/~kaosmos/morecols-en.html
    Download to desktop.
    In Thunderbird:
    Tools > Addons
    Clickon on gear wheel icon and select : Install addon from file;
locate file you downloaded and click on Open
You may need to restart Thunderbird.

  • Aperture book for iPhoto user?

I've been running iPhoto for about 10 years, and the time has long been ripe for me to switch to Aperture.  I'm currently running iPhoto 2009 on an OX 10.6 Mac Pro.  I'd like to switch to Aperture on my Mac Pro, and given that I'm running 10.6 the latest version I can get looks like v3.2.
Can anyone recommend a good book for me to get up to speed in Aperture 3, given my iPhoto experience?  I am a fairly advanced user, with a programming background.
    John F
    New York, NY
    ps...
What I like in iPhoto 2009 that I want to keep:
Albums (with "folders" and "subfolders") scroll on the left-hand side.  Below the albums list, in the same column, is the optional info box for the selected photo, with the rating, user comments, date taken, etc.  To the right is the photo set for the selected album with resizable thumbnails. iPhoto 2011 inexplicably requires a WHOLE NEW COLUMN just to see comments, photo ranking, and other info for the selected photo which is a maddening waste of screen space.
What I want to get from Aperture:
Multiple home directories with a unified view:  Right now, I have one giant 100Gb iPhoto directory with all of my photos in it.  I'd like, instead, to have one directory per year, but have Aperture browse them all as if they were a single unit.
Portability of photo subsets:  I'd then like the ability to copy just one of these directories to my laptop, and then be able work with that subdirectory in Aperture.

In addition to Kirby's introduction to the fundamental features of Aperture, a few notes on the transit from iPhoto to Aperture.
I also have been a long time iPhoto user and really like the added freedom and flexibility that Aperture brings.   But one thing was not so nice - there is no easy transition from iPhoto to Aperture 3.2.4 or earlier, if you want to import your iPhoto libraries as libraries and maintain a lossless workflow.
I'm currently running iPhoto 2009 on an OX 10.6 Mac Pro.  I'd like to switch to Aperture on my Mac Pro, and given that I'm running 10.6 the latest version I can get looks like v3.2.
Your transit to Aperture would be much smoother, if you could take the plunge and upgrade to MacOS X 10.7.5 and migrate from iPhoto 9.3.x to Aperture 3.4 .
The big difference would be, that you could open any iPhoto Library in Aperture and vica versa and could profit from the representation of images and versions as pairs of original master files and virtual versions.  In the iPhoto version you are now running, each edited image is stored twice or more. Each edited verssion will create an new copy of the image file in your iPhoto library. Aperture has always stored only the orginal master and a description of the list of adjustments to render the edited version from the original. You do not duplicate the amount of storage required, when you edit an image, like in the earlier versions of iPhoto? Have you ever been tempted to use iPhoto Diet? With Aperture you can forget such worries.
If you import your iPhoto '09  library to Aperture, there will be no help but to import each photo twice - the original and the edited version and it will be a waste of diskspace compared to the import in Aperture 3.4 and a lot of work to group these duplicates and to decide what to do about them - redo the edits in Aperture and discard the edited iPhoto version, or what?
So, if you can, do this from a Lion or Mt.Lion system, if you already have a large iPhoto Library.
    Your wish list:
iPhoto 2011 inexplicably requires a WHOLE NEW COLUMN just to see comments, photo ranking, and other info for the selected photo which is a maddening waste of screen space.
In Aperture you have many ways to view the Metadata - hovering HUDs, tabs, overlays on the images;  all is highly customizable.
Multiple home directories with a unified view:  Right now, I have one giant 100Gb iPhoto directory with all of my photos in it.  I'd like, instead, to have one directory per year, but have Aperture browse them all as if they were a single unit.
No way. If you want Aperture to browse your photo libraries  as if they were a single unit, it has to be one library. But you have more advanced tools in Aperture to structure your Aperture library than in iPhoto, and Aperture supports huge, distributed Aperture libraries. It works well - my main Aperture library holds all photos I have ever taken plus some more.  See Kirby's explanation above.
Portability of photo subsets:  I'd then like the ability to copy just one of these directories to my laptop, and then be able work with that subdirectory in Aperture.
Kirby already explained that.  It is easily done by exporting partial libraries and reimporting.

  • Best/Worst Labview Book for Beginner/Advanced/Good Reference

I saw a few other posts like this one but they were not very informative.
I thought I'd start this thread so everyone can voice thier opinion on what the best/worst Labview Reference is so that beginners (like me) and people just seeking information can know what to, and more importantly what NOT to buy.
List the good/bad points about the book like:
Does it teach good coding style?
Is it a good reference when you are done reading it?
How are the examples in it?
    Is it easy to understand?
    Things of that nature...
Again I'm sorry for kind of reposting this question but like I said, the other posts just give a list of LV books and not any information about them, not even if they are worth reading. It just looked like a listing from a search on Amazon.

Some other users recommended recently the book "LABVIEW Graphical Programming -- Practical Applications in Instrumentation and Control" by Gary W. Johnson. I haven't read it myself. This site has a big knowledgebase with many tutorials and examples, many of them many good, but they are usually topic specific and do not work as a course.
You should try to reread the manual in a few months. After you have gained some experience it is much easier to read and you will find it has some very interesting stuff.
As a side point, most people on this site do not get paid for doing this. Only those with blue names are from NI. The rest of us do this as a personal basis for several reasons: We like to help people, there are some very interesting things which can be learned from being around here and it's usually just plain fun (try looking at the BreakPoint. If you appreciate it, why not come back when you have more experience and help others?

  • Labview Books for 8.5

    Proven Active Veterans,
Does anyone know of a good current book that is based on Labview 8.5 which goes into advance and intermediate LabVIEW topics?
    Regards,
    SS

I am not a PAV but I'll add my 2 cents.
I like "LabVIEW for Everyone" third edition is the most up to date text but does not cover LV 8.5.
But if you handle everything in that book, then the release notes and a couple of posting to the forums should fill in the gaps.

  • Creating 2 address books for different users?

my wife and I don't want to login as separate users on the powerbook, but we do want to be able to import and synchronise our address books from our palm PDAs and keep the addresses separate. So far it seems that we would merge the addresses into the "all" group the first time we synch. Is there a way to set up 2 different users?
your help appreciated to keep my partner happy!!

    No there isn't.
In order to do so, you must create a login user account for your wife. She will have you own Home folder/directory which will include her Address Book contacts, email account or accounts in Mail, etc.
You can enable Fast User Switching which makes the process of switching between user accounts a fast and easy process.

  • Book for advanced Java

I'm looking for a book. There are lots of books on how to start programming java. But I'm looking for something 'advanced'!
    Does anyone have a recommedation??
I'm especially looking for topics like planing large programs.

I'm also quite interested in network
programming. This is a coming one on concurrency with lots of high profile authors,

I usually only recommend just one book and that's the Java Programming Language by Gosling and others. With it you're an instant gury and can answer like 95% of all questions asked here.
There's also another one on patterns I'm quite fond of. It's Holub on Patterns by Holub. Even though the GoF book is the bible most examples are C++ and it's quite a hard read. This is softer with two big examples including the Game of Life.

I'm a little curious about this one, Wicked Cool Java, but don't know anything about it.

  • How can I share the same music but separate calendars and address book for 2 users on the same computer?

Can anyone help to answer if I can share the same music account on itunes but still maintain separate calendars and address books on the same computer?

Make sure each user has their own computer login.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to /Users/Shared.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library and select /Users/Shared/iTunes/ folder.
Quit iTunes and log into other user.
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
Select Choose library and select /Users/Shared/iTunes/ folder.
That is all you need to do.
Any changes in iTunes by one will be seen by all others (since you are using the same library).
All users will have their own Contacts & Calendars and all other info.
If you are using Fast User switching, you must quit iTunes before switching users if others wish to use iTunes.

  • Recommed CS4 or CS3 Book for CS3 User

Now that I've read through several CSS books, I decided to go back to DW for jazzing up
some pages, and using some of the new controls.
But since CS4 seemed to come out right after CS3, I was caught off guard, and now find
that all the book stores have CS4 books. Can anyone tell me if they had good experiences
using CS4 books with CS3. Are there only subtle differences?? Or will I get lost??
I mainly want a good book on using DW with CSS.
    Thanks
    Howard

It's so long since I last used CS3, I can't remember all the differences, but the biggest changes regarding CSS are that the Property inspector in CS4 has a separate CSS mode, using a Targeted Rule field, and the New CSS Rule dialog box is considerably different.
Bricks and mortar bookstores might not have CS3 books available, but you should be able to get Mastering CSS with Dreamweaver CS3 by Stephanie Sullivan and Greg Rewis from an online store. My book, "The Essential Guide to Dreamweaver CS3 with CSS, Ajax, and PHP" is also still available. However, the CSS part of the book is only a few chapters, so you would probably find Stephanie's book more helpful.

  • Good Oracle DB book for MySQL users?

I'm new to Oracle. I have a good amount of experience with MySQL. I was wondering if there is a book written as an introduction to Oracle for people already familiar with MySQL.

    Hi,
The best place to start is at the Oracle documentation site -
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/index.html
and from there choose the 'DBAs' tab under 'Getting Started' and this has pointers to basic information.

  • 'How to' book for Mac version of PSE4

Is there an basic guide published that caters for the Mac version of PSE4? Or am I right in thinking there's nothing currently available?

There is really not a huge difference between the Mac and PC version of any book -- it is a distraction, sure. But if you just make key substitutions (below) and ignore the Organizer stuff, the programs are virtually the same:
    Ctrl = Command (apple)
    Alt = Option
    Shift = Shift
    right-click = Control
If you just read through a book and make those substitutions most other things will fall in place (there is one additional annoying menu on Mac [I'm a Mac user at home, PC at 'work', so no flames] that being the Photoshop Elements menu. These are not additional items, but items moved from other menus--so if you can't find something in a PC book where it belongs, then look for it on that menu). Some people have more or less trouble with the differences between Mac and PC books--they don't bother me at all as I use Mac and PC every day (but curiously I can find myself temporarily lost when I use the one Mac we have at 'work').
Like Barbara said, I don't know that my book is the best to begin with as it does tend to be for advanced users. Some beginning users have had success with it, but it depends on their background (usually those with photography and computer backgrounds do fine).
Barbara...I just can't believe they are not re-printing a successful book! Obviously even the Elements 3 book is still selling. After all theese years in publishing, I still can't figure out the 'wizdom' of publishers. They have to make money, but they might as well make sense! I just finished my 7th book, and it might have been my last had I not done it for Focal Press. They were great to work with! But perhaps this is a discussion for off-list ;-).

    Thanks for reply.
But I need to configure everything using powershell script. Is it possible to use powershell script to setting group policy/ adding logon script ?
These are pretty basic administration tasks and almost always quicker to accomplish with the GUI. Why do you want to use a PowerShell script?
