LabView enters some sort of deadlock after writing to the Rohde & Schwarz UPL Audio Analyser

It sometimes (pretty often) happens that after a write commando to the UPL (through GPIB), LabView enters some sort of deadlock. The LabView Program indicates as executing, but nothing happens. The fault enters in my complex program, but also in very simple examples. When I boot the UPL from default (factory setting) and run a very simple program, the fault happens as well. So I suggest that its not any UPL user made device-setting that causes the problem.
The problem appears the most in the following vis:
- RSUPL Send Trigger
- RSUPL Measure Single Channel
(Common used vis, I should say)
I hope someone can give me some hints for solving the probl
em.
Additional Information about used hard- / software:
- UPL firmware v2.03
- LabView version 5.1
- Instrument driver library rsupl_lv5.zip - Rev 3.0 - 8/1999
With kind regards,
Julien van Brussel.

The other possible problem should not be overlooked: There could be a bug in the instrument itself. It used to be fairly common to have LV programs run considerably faster than the GPIB interface on instruments (Even with LV1 running on a MacPlus!). If you are trying to talk to the instrument too fast, it can cause problems because the instrument doesn't end up in the logical state the software is expecting.
I once had a HP spectrum analyzer that had a protocol where you had to send it a command and then check a status byte to determine when it was ready to respond. Occasionally, the code would error out because when it went to check on the instrument status, the byte read "awaiting command" instead of "busy" or "waiting to respond". I finally figured out
that I was sending a command and then asking the instrument its status before it had a chance to see the command in it's command buffer. Inserting a 10msec wait fixed the problem. Wierd things can happen.
Following the execution highlighting as has been suggested by a couple folks should get you into the right part of the code. Then it's a matter of figuring out why the code is hung: Your fault or their fault--and if its their fault: how do you work around it...

  • I had all of my contacts yesterday and today some are missing. After I downloaded the ios5 I've had so many problems.

    Some one please help!

    Give this fix a try:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager demo version and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
4 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • New G5 Stuck in some sort of loop!

Everything worked fine for about 3 weeks on my new G5 Quad. Then one day I start up and everything boots normally, but I'm stuck in something that sounds similar to the Finder loop. My desktop looks normal...but I can't open any files and app's...when I try...everything disappears except the wallpaper, and the toolbar at the tops flashes for several seconds...like its in some sort of loop before opening up the finder window. This happens everytime I click on something...effectively making my computer useless.
It reminds me of some sort of hardware problem...so I took everthing out 1 by 1, until eventually it only had what came stock...512 MB RAM and the 1 hard drive...same problem...so its not peripherals. Did hardware test...everything passed. Reset PRAM and PMU. Same problem.
Then I tried to boot off of Tiger DVD...system crashed after I selected language...not good. Has done the repeatedly so I can't repair any permission with disk utility...tried to boot in safe mode...didn't work...took me to a blank prompt that was unresponsive.
I'm at a total loss...Thanks for any help.

It wouldn't even let me choose disk utility...as soon as I selected my language (1st step)...it shuts down. I do have a second drive...but unplugged it while troubleshooting to put the machine back to its initial state (yeah...like it was 3 weeks ago when it was brand new)...no...this looks like a hardware malfunction...almost like it'll boot up fine but if you require it do any work (i.e computations...like open an app)...it stops itself from goin any further...i'm wondering if this is fan/heat sensor related.
btw-are there actually any G5's out there that don't crash all the time? If so, does that imply that some just roll off the line bad?

    Hi,
I tried your vi: I don't get any error message after removing the disk but LV7 keeps on accessing the drive at regular intervals even if you stop the vi and close it!!! This is not supposed to happen.
The only way to stop it is exit LV7.
If you don't use the file dialog and you wire a full path, you don't get any problem.
I also created a very simple vi that conditionally writes a text file on a: and I got the same behaviour.
This problem occurs only with LV7, I tried the same examples in LV6.1 and everything was fine.
If anybody wants to try I attach this simple example,
    Alberto

unable to bootup after Yosemite install. have to keep shutting down from rear button. it does come on after a few times but then hangs at user login again. If you get in it is great. Seems faster than Mavericks but there is some sort of issue, bootup /login.

Knock on wood, this seems to have been my problem as well.  I stumbled on this thread after dealing with this ridiculously-long boot times for the past several weeks.
I just reinstalled McAfee Antivirus and my Macbook Air booted up in less than 1 minute.  No more hanging on the boot-up progress bar.  No more hanging after I click on my user's avatar on the log-in screen.  Bootup would often take 5+ minutes and sometimes never complete.
    This has been SUPREMELY frustrating.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING YOUR RESPONSE!!!

  • I believe that I have a keylogger or some sort of spyware installed on my mac, please help!

I followed this procedure to check my files:
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
The following procedure will help whether your system has been modified. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Migrating large project from DSC 7.1 to LabView 2009 Shared Variables ... What's the next step after recreating my variables?

I am in the process of migrating a large distributed (multi-workstation) automation system from the LabVIEW 7.11 DSCEngine on Windows XP to the LabVIEW 2009 Shared Variable Engine on Windows 7.
I have about 600 tags which represent data or IO states in a series of Opto22 instruments, accessible via their OptoOPCServer. There are another 150 memory tags which are used so the multiple workstations can trade requests and status information to coordinate motion and process sequencing.  Only one workstation may be allowed to run the Opto22 server, because otherwise the Opto22 instruments are overwhelmed by the multiple communications requests; for simplicity, I'll refer to that workstation as the Opto22 gateway.
The LabVIEW 2009 migration tool was unable to properly migrate the Opto22 tags, but with some help from NI support (thank you, Jared!) and many days of pointing and clicking, I have successfully created a bound shared-variable library connecting to all the necessary data and IO.  I've also created shared variables corresponding to the memory tags. All the variables have been deployed.
So far, so good. After much fighting with Windows 7 network location settings,  I can open the Distributed System Manager on a second W7/LV2009 machine (I'll refer to it as the "remote" machine henceforth) and see the processes and all those variables on the Opto22 gateway workstation. I've also created a few variables on the remote workstation and confirmed that I can see them from the gateway workstation.
Now I need to be able to use (both read and write) the variables in VIs running on the remote workstation machine. (And by extension, on more remote workstations as I do the upgrade/migration).
I have succeeded in reading and writing them by creating a tag reader pointed at the URL for the process on the Opto22 gateway. I can see a way I could replace the old DSC tag reads and writes in my applications using this technique, but is this the right way to do this? Is this actually using the Shared Variable Engine, or is it actually using the DataSocket? I know for a fact that attempting to manipulate ~800 items via Datasocket will bog down the systems.
I had the impression that I should be able to create shared variables in my project on the remote workstation that link to those on the Opto22 gateway workstation. When, however, I try to browse to find the processes on that workstation, I get an error saying that isn't possible.
Am I on the right track with the tag reader? If not, is there some basic step I'm missing in trying to access the shared variables I created on the gateway workstation?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I have found the answer to part of my question -- an relatively easy way to create a "remote" library of shared variables that connect to the master library on my gateway workstation.
Export the variables from the master library as a csv file and copy that to the remote machine.
Open the file on the remote machine (in excel or the spreadsheet app of your choice) and (for safety's sake) immediately save it with a name marking it as the remote version.
Find the network path column (it was "U" in my file).
replace the path for each variable (which will be either a long file path or a blank, depending on the kind of variable) with \\machine\'process name'\variable name
where machine is the name or ip address of the master (gateway) workstation (I used the ip address to make sure it uses my dedicated automation ethernet network rather than our building-wide network)
and process name is the name of the process with the deployed variables visible in the Distributed System Manager on the gateway machine.
NOTE the single quotes around the process name; they are required.
The variable name is in the first ("A") column, so in Excel, I could do this for line 2 with the formula =CONCATENATE("\\machine\'process name'\",A2)
Once the formula worked on line 2, I could copy it into all the other lines.
    Save the CSV file.
Import the CSV into the remote library to create the variables.
Note: at this point, if you attempt to deploy the variables, it will fail. The aliases are not quite set properly yet.
Open the properties for the first imported variable.
There is probably an error message at the bottom saying the alias is invalid.
In the alias section, you'll see it is set to "Project Variable" with the network path from step 4.
Change the setting to "PSP URL" with the same path and the error message should disappear.
Close the properties box, save the library, and then export the variables to a new CSV file.
Open the new CSV file in Excel, and scroll sideways to the NetworkrojectBound field.
You'll notice it is False for the first variable, and true for the rest. Set the field FALSE for all lines in the spreadsheet.
Scroll sideways... you'll notice there are two new columns between NetworkrojectPath and Network:UseBinding
The first one is NetworkingleWriter; it should already be FALSE for all lines.
The second one is Network:URL. That needs to be set equal to the value for each line of NetworkrojectPath.
You can accomplish this with a formula like in step 4. In Excel it was =U2 for line 2, and then cut and paste into all lines below it.
There is a third new field, Path, which should already be set to the location of the variable library. You don't need to do anything with it.
    Save the edited CSV file.
Go back to the remote library, and import variables from the just-edited remote library CSV file.
Once you have imported them and the Multiple Variable Editor opens, click on done.
You should now be able to deploy the remote variable library without error. (Make sure to open the Distributed System Manager and start the local variable engine. It took me a few failures before I realized I had to do that before attempting a deployment).
Voila! You now have a "remote" library of shared variables that references all the shared variables on the master machine, and which should be deployable on other machines with very little difficulty.
It actually took longer to write out the process here than to perform these steps once I figured it out.

  • Can I automate a VI to test hardware through CAN with some sort of script?

I am trying to automate some hardware testing over the CAN bus.   I have started a basic VI that I can manually run these tests, but there are testing scripts available to me and I was wondering if there is a way to import some sort of scripts (or similar) into LABView to automatically run my VI to perform the test.  I've done some searches, but looking for scripting only comes up with MathScript that MATLAB related information.
    Thanks for the help.

Thank you very much for the help.  To be honest, I'm new to LabVIEW development and so I don't have any experience in importing scripts whatsoever.  Assuming I have the script written in the suggested format...
Do I keep it saved as a .xls?
What subVI block do I import it into LabVIEW with?
Also, I haven't looked at every script I'll be dealing with (only a couple) and therefore, I don't know how complex it may get.  Do you know where I can access some resources on learning to use TestStand?  I've never used it before.  Even just answering the basic, what does it do/how does it work would be helpful.
Once again, I appreciate all the assistance.
We may be calling it as script, but to the core, you are developing an appication to read excel sheet, your logic should segragate each steps action and you should have LabVIEW code wherever an action is required. If you are planning to do this task in LabVIEW, you need following steps to finish.
VI to read your excel sheet and format it to a 2-Dimensional array(Format the array to remove unnecesary characters).
A state machine(code architecture) which will be guided as per the states in your excel sheet.
A hardware handling loop to generate and acquire data for your main code(state machine).
Use CAN Channel API in case you have a defined CAN dbc file.
If no dbc file, go for frame API.
In case you are using TestStand, you need go for an architecture where your CAN periodic data transmission is taken care using LabVIEW.
Honestly it's not the task of a novice LabVIEW\TestStand programmer if you have less time ro learn. If you provide your e-mail address, I can send you a scaled down code after removing proprietary stuff.
Following link is an introductuction to Teststand:

Regarding availability of resources to learn LabVIEW and TestStand,Can any one who is following this thread can suggest any materials ?

  • Dropping files to fullscreen apps through mission control results in app folder opening and in some sort of task switching madness

In Snow Leopard I got used to attach documents in mails by dragging and dropping files from the desktop to the message window. To do so  I used active corners (spaces, exposé). Now, with Mission Control in Lion I've tried to keep that workflow but this leads me to an awkward problem. To reproduce it in my computer I do the following:
Pick up a file from the desktop --> drag it to lower right corner (opens mission control) --> drag it to full screen mail space, press space to switch (applications folder opens inside mission control), and a lot of apps too (those the cursor hovered).
At the same time, mail full screen window opens (as waiting time selected in finder preferences for triggering is short), then Lion turns crazy entering in some sort of spasmodic task switching mode, which lasts after I find some clear space to drag the file back in the desktop.
Did any other user  experience something similar? Is there something I could do to help to fix the problem?
    Thanks for you answers.
[Edit: Ok, so I started trying with other apps and it turns that every time I drag and drop any file to a fullscreen app in mission control and use the space key to open it, I get a similar behavior. I did it in Scrivener and it resulted in photoshop and itunes opening,  Scrivener vanished and but left an empty (like dashboard's) desktop.]

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply.
    >>Running bootcamped Win7, yes power consumption is more, a lot more,....indications are no.
Sorry, can you clarify on this one - do you mean the power consumption is more DURING the use of Windows, or ALL of the time (even when using the Mac as normal with OSX).... also what did you mean by indications?
    >>From the parameters of what you say your use would be, Id recommend the I5 with 8gig of ram. the 12 hour >>batt. life is only rated for the 13" on the I5, ....not the I7.
Sounds like my first guess was about right - and good point about the battery life - as that is something that's quite important to me!
    >>The "switch" is extremely easy. Ive seen grandmothers switch to a MAC and have its 'everyday use' >>conquered in under a week. So, you should have no worries, its extremely user friendly, no worries of virus, >>etc.
Glad to hear I've done more research and already seen a few features I can see myself preferring a lot more to the Windows system!
    >>As a former computer repairman, Ive owned nearly 200 diff. laptops (many were free, or Franken-computers >>built from parts) and I can honestly say the Macbook AIR is the finest piece of beloved hardware Ive ever >>owned by a mile.
    >>Many people incorrectly see the THIN nature of the Air and incorrectly conjecture its "less than" a full laptop, >>but the contrary is the case.
Nah, I don't associate size with performance - especially these days, everything is getting smaller. My concerns are really just about whether to upgrade for extra performance, and using the OS - once I have those nailed I am pretty cofident the hardware will perform well.
    >>Additionally the AIR is the only Mac that has 802AC wifi, new Haswell cool-running processor, and extremely >>long 12 Hr. batt life on the I5 13" configuration.
Yeah that battery life is one of the big sellers
    Cheers for the tips,
    Danielle
