Labview with Vista 64 bit native support

I'm waiting day after day to see a new Labview release supporting Vista 64 bit (I mean running at 64bit natively and not in a 32bit emulation layer). I expected it last year... then I waited believing that of course... it'll come soon... but now I'm really panicking.
64bit CPUs and Vista x64 are now available from a long time ! What's going on ?
Did I miss some release note ??? Maybe is already available and I don't know ? (I hope so!)
In the mean time Microsoft announced the discontinuation of Windows XP on June 2008 this year (3 moths from now)!!!
Does anyone knows when a full 64bit Labview version will be released ? And what about Vision libs ? (I also need full 64 bit Vision Libs for my applications...)
I have big memory allocation limits due to 32bit addressing (max 2GB)  that I cannot afford anymore... not in the 2008.
I write Vision acquisition software using Labview, IMAQ Hardware and Advanced IMAQ Vision Libs.
As everybody know, memory allocation is "generally" limited to 2GB by the 32bits OS (little more with some tricks) but max image allocation in Labview is anyway much smaller because of default memory fragmentation (Labview and Vision LIBs require allocating a "contiguous memory block" and generally no more then 3-500MB are really available for a single image even with 4GB of memory installed in your PC! This is caused by all DLLs and processes running in memory at different addresses and fragmenting the memory).
I spoke several time with NI concering this problem in the last years and I was told to wait... in the mean time I had to write a special "memory defragmentation" tool myself in order to free up to 1.2GB of RAM for imaging with Labview. Not enough for me and anyway not a clean solution.
Then after Microsoft announced Vista 64bit (a few years ago now) and all PC manufacturer starting building 64bit architecture I expected to solve all my problems soon because of the much larger usable memory addressability...
but this cannot be done yet if Labview and Vision LIBs run in 32bit emulation only !!!
Furthermore Vista 32bit is much slower then XP and uses much more memory !!! This is really a nightmare as I believe that for the first time I'm facing the possibility that soon I'll have to deliver a "newer" but worst product to my customers.
In fact I'll be forced soon to move from LV 7/8 to LV 8.5 (just in order to support Vista) but only to be slower and having the same memory limitations (or maybe more).
Maybe I'm wrong ?
Can anyone reassure me... LV 9 is just after the corner with full 64bit as requested ??? I'm really in panick !
Thanks...
I'm really a LV lover but cannot wait anymore...

Dear Matt,
I was aware of the /3GB and I tryed time ago with LV 7 and XP but without being able to allocate a larger image anyway...
I'll try again and for sure 4GB under Vista 64 is better then anything !!! Do you know if "Image Create.vi" (a VI included in the Vision package) is also able to allocate up to 4GB ?
Concerning Memory defrag I started using some tools available in the marlet (there are good ones for memory analyzing but no one is capable of defragging the memory really)... then a coupple of years ago I wrote a small application in Labview based on 2 free tools provided on the web (those are free tools for developpers provided from Microsoft)...
One is Listdlls.exe which is a command line capable of listing all running DLLs (associated with any running application) and it produces a memory map of the DLLs allocation in memory which allow you to understand how memory is fragmented.
The other one is also a command line tool named Rebase.exe which allow you to a DLL to a different address in memory.
In fact once rebased a DLL will generally load automatically starting at the new address instead of loading in the middle of the memory or at the original address... but not always as some rare system DLLs will anyway try to load always at the same position (as for Asian Language Pack on Chinese/Japanese OS). Furthermore some DLLs need to be loaded to a specific address.
I wrote a program in order to automatically create a memory map of all running DLLs (including system ones) using Listdlls.exe and automatically rebasing them after the first 128MB in memory. Rebasing system/running DLLs is generally more difficult (because of the required access policy and because you must plan a replacement only after next reboot) ... my software take care of this.
Furthermore rebasing running/system DLLs is also dangerous and can crash your system... after many test I limited the rebasing to the memory addresses included between 256MB and 1.6GB... I never have problems rebasing all DLLs in these range (including system ones) under XP 32bit SP2.
I also move DLLs to free space only (not on already occupyed space). Furthermore I never allocate DLLs in the first 128MB (as you'll crash your system probably). In this way I was capable of freing a lot of memory (generally about 15-20 DLLs are reallocated and memory between is free between 300 and 1.6)... something more can be done manually on the higher memory addresses but it take times and must be checked always. In automatic mode my software is capable of freing memory in 2 seconds (but you need a reboot).
Backing up original DLLs is also suggested in order to be able to restore them in case of any problem. I implemented an automatic backup and a restore option for this. A manual mode allow me to manually move DLLs in memory (but it's more dangerous and never allow my customer to do it).
Generally after rebased the memory stay defragmented until you install a new OS patch (which replace old DLLs).
Then you must be aware then in order to mantain the memory clean when running your application in Labview you should preallocate a large memory block when starting your application preventing labview from allocating resources in your free memory (it must use memory outside the 300-1600MB range). This is another problem... I found it hard to solve and my application is doing a good job but not perfect for this.
p.s. Labview and LV Runtimes are major cause of memory fragmentation as they load just in the middle of the system memory... these are the first DLLs ro be rebased !!!

• Internet Security Suite does not work with Vista 64 bit

After attempting to use the Chat Help, twice, and spending hours in queue before getting kicked off, I finally called Support to find out why my new Vista computer was not running the Internet Security Suite that I downloaded.  Yes, I found the link to "download to a second computer" and went thru all the steps.  Got lots of positive feedback: little bars were filling in letting me know I was 40%, 72%, 100% done, etc..  Was given a window allowing me to Run or Don't Run the software.  It all seemed to go very well.  However, when the "download and installation" was complete, there was no new software running anywhere on my computer.  Couldn't find it in the Control Panel, the Start menu, or the system tray.  Called Support and spent at least 30 minutes on the phone with a "technician" (and I use that term VERY loosely) who had to have major assistance from a co-worker before he could even start screen-sharing with me and, during the course of our time together, made the following brilliant remarks:
Upon seeing my desktop wallpaper (which is a lovely photo of some cliffs and a lake - and it came with Vista), he wanted to know what the picture was.  Not where it was taken, but just what it was.  His exact comment was "Does your screen always look like that?".  I had to dig deeper to determine if he was asking about a particular icon or some other computer related concern that he saw (he was "technical support", after all), but he was just asking about the stupid photo.
He couldn't find the Control Panel in the Start Menu until after trying several times, and then he couldn't navigate to the Programs area very well (I had to give verbal hints as to where it was), and his brilliant comment then was "I really need to go to my mom's house and get on her new laptop and try out Vista."  Can you believe that Verizon has technical support folks who have never used Vista?  It's not like Vista just came on the market yesterday!!
So, when he finally decided that he was not going to be able to help me, he didn't offer me any other recourse.  He just stated over and over that he was not sure how to solve this issue.  Oh, and this was after I re-downloaded ISS (again, "successfully").  I had to ask if there was someone else there who could possibly help me.  He offered to put me on hold (for the 2nd or 3rd time at this point) to check around.  When he returned to the phone, it was obvious that someone else was operating the mouse in the screen sharing mode because the operator moved confidentially around the screen and went immediately to system properties and saw that I am running Windows 64 bit.  The other operator then told my guy to tell me that ISS only works with Windows 32 bit.  Their final resolution was that I should call billing on Monday and end my subscription.  I think that may be the only good advice I was given that day.
So, am probably going to renew my trial version of Norton on this new computer and remove ISS from the laptop and put Norton on there as well.  Apparently, they are up to date with this fancy new technology.  At least they probably know about sophisticated and highly technical stuff like desktop wallpaper.

I have been trying to get somewhere with this Internet Security Suite...and now have come to the conclusion this is not going to work.  Now running Vista 64 bit, and have gotten nothing but the run around to try to complete the downloading of the program.  I've contacted Verizon Tech Support...then tell me that this works with the 64 bit but I need to contact Windows as there is a glitch and they give you the steps to get thru it.  Windows advises me to contact Verizon again as there are no problems with the OS.  Also have contacted Radialpoint and once again nothing...Obviously the Secuirty is not compatible with Vista 64 bit yet, which I just can't believe like you said...it's not like it was just yesterday this OS came out.  My frusteration comes from nobody steps up to take any responsibility as to what the problem is.  If it is not compatible yet then say so and not waste my whole weekend trying to get a straight answer.  I have other computers that I am currently using the service on and do like the program, but as for my Vista 64 bit looks like I may go to Macafee for protection.  It just amazes me as big as Verizon is and as popular this Vista has become they are not on the ball in keeping up with technology.

Hi,
I have Satalite A300D-15B AMB 64-bit notebook with Vista 64-bit installed. After I have installed Vista, it automatically took the audio drivers for sound card, but Dolby didn't work.
I tried to install the drivers from toshiba, it fails.
Can someone guide me how to install the Vista 64-bit drivers for Conexant High Definition Audio please......
regards,
Ganesh

Hello Ganesh
Sorry but this notebook model is not supported for Vista 64-bit and I don't know what driver installation are you writing about.
What you can try is to download and install THIS driver.
This is driver for Satellite A300 but this notebook has the same sound card as your Satellite A300D - Conexant CX20561.
Please post the results.

• VISTA 64 bit software support

My good ol computers hard drive crashed. It was using Windows XP. I already replaced the motherboard, so I decideded it time for a new computer. I now have a HP with VISTA 64 bit operating system. Problem is, I am with Earthlink and their software does not support 64 bit. Even though I have had very little problems with the DSL becoming slow or droping out, as I am hearing from these threads on this forem.
Can Verizion support the 64 bit computers?

Verizon for home users either uses:
#1 DHCP
#2 OR PPPoE.
Either way, you do not the verizon software to get online.
If you are not behind a router, you are running Windows Vista, and your connection type in PPPoE...
See as need be: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-us/help/f573e922-3dde-baac-69ef-a115548a83411033.mspx
Before doing anything else..
#1 What is the brand and model of your modem?
#2 Do you have any router (If so, what one do you have)?
#3 Do you use DHCP or PPPoE?
If you don't know the answer to the last one..
Here is a hint. Which is a quick quote from DSLR All FAQs » Verizon Online DSL FAQ » 7. Setup »
Verizon GTE Setup
* GTE areas of Verizon do not need PPPoe (WinPoet/Raspppoe) for their setup. This is only needed by the old BellAtlantic customers. *

Hi all,
I am really feel bad that no one replied from Apple.I dont know whether you guyz are looking on this forum. But I tried the given SDK 7.3 with Vista 32 bit and also with XP. In both the OS its working fine. But It not supports Vista 64 bit. May be Microsoft or apple has to provide compatibility for developing quicktime app using windows. Thanks.

Download and install the QuickTime 7.4 standalone installer(without iTunes), install it, and report back your results? You can get it here: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
Thanks,

Unfortunately, no.
It does not work correctly, I actually had to do a system restore. It broke a few things. Most noticeably my quick launch bar quit working. The icons were present but clicking them did nothing, it would not re-size correctly, etc.
I wont be putting it back on the PC any time soon.

• How to sync with vista 64 bit windows calendar and windows contacts

Hi all,
I see the clear msg on the Palm site saying that 64 bit windows is not supported, but that is still my need and my goal.  I just bought a new DELL desktop and am transitioning to it, but this is a showstopper.
I want to ask if any user has suggestions or if anyone has insight as to if/when palm will sppt it.  Today its hard to buy a machine in a retail store that is not loaded w Vista64...and I spoke to Dell about this, since they need to warn people that the OS may prohibit a person from replacing his old Dell with a new one, but they say its a Palm/Msft problem.
My Tungsten E2 is important to me, and I want to sync it daily.  I am not very sophisticated when it comes to PC's or the OS's although i have learned a lot in the past 3 days.  I have no room to keep 2 machines, nor desire.  Any suggestions besides 'let the buyer beware'?

I've been a Palm user for only 1 Year now and am not impressed.  Sure the 755P was a flashy device with cool features.  However, now after owning the device for a short period I'm looking for updates from Palm which don't exist.  The browser in antiquated and doesn't support recent technology.  The email system is effective, however, hope you don't receive an HTML email because you can't read it in Versamail.  Palm is focused on trying to produce new devices which compete with the IPhone and Storm but aren't remembering that their loyal customers will continue to purchase devices from them if they keep them happy. Futher, after upgrading my wife's laptop to Vista 64-bit I find that we can no longer sync the device using the interface cable.
My advice at this time, is to stay away from Palm until they provide the service which customers have come to expect.  I note today 12/7/08 that Palm is selling at $1.42 a share when just 8 years ago Palm stock was selling for $472.50.  Don't you see the picture, people are interested in the new flashy devices, but, if you don't take care of your customer base which has been loyal they will jump ship and move on to the better technology which works.
How about providing the updates we need to work today.  It will help me make up my mind next year when this 2-yr contract with Alltel is up (and i become a new Verizon) customer.
The matter is all in Palm's hands.  I don't see this company surviving past 2010 unless they start taking care of people now.  My advice, stay away from Palm until they fix all these issues which people have identified throughout the web.

• QuickTime 7 incompatible with Vista 64-bit?

After downloading Quick Time Player 7 I was unable to get it going. The message was: use Windows 2000 or more recent. When trying to resolve the problem as advides by support a choice for Vista was not possible in the setting of the exe file for Quick Time Player. When calling a helpdesk I was advised that there is no support from Apple for Windows users, not even when they decided to purchase the PRO version of Quick Time. Please tell me that's not true and give me a solution for my Vista 64-bit problem !

Was this an "iTunes + Quicktime" bundle download? or just QuickTime? QT 7.2 or later is supported under Vista 64-bit. My guess is it may be something with something else like language setting or such.

• Problems with using Laserjet 1320 with Vista 64 bit

I have downloaded drivers for the PCL 5, PCL 6 and the PostScript for the Laserjet 1320. I can not get the toolbox, I can't print multi copies, or turn the paper to landscape. Basically I can't do anything except to point and print and not make any changes in the printing box before printing. It was only after downloading the postscript that I can now print selected items, but wondering if that will still work once I turn off my computer and restart it.
How can I get my printer to work with Word 97 and Vista 64-bit?  I can't use the printer disk to install it onto Vista 64-bit because my printer is a usb  plug- in  (hope I got the usb right or is it ubs???) sorry I'm flustered!
Should I also install the universal drivers? one of them -- all of them???
Please Help!
At wits end in Maine!

I'm afraid that both you--and me--are out of luck!  Yesterday I emailed HP tech support asking for a version of the Toolbox that would work under Vista and was told, in effect, "Sorry, Charlie, but the 1320 series is not a current model so we don't support it anymore."  (Unfortunately, they NEVER properly supported it, since I was asking for a Vista version of the Toolbox since April, 2007.)
HP customer support has deteriorated markedly since Carly Fiorina began to destroy the company several years ago!

• Laserjet 1012 on network with Vista 64 bit laptop

I am currently trying to connect to a Laserjet 1012 that is set up on our home network with a laptop running 64 bit Vista.  I have tried to just rght click and drag the printer from the networked computer it is directly connected to and then try the install option.  This brings up a dialog box stating that it cannot find the correct inf file or drivers to install the printer.  I have tried downloading and extracting the Vista 64 bit drivers from the HP support site but I can not find the inf files needed to complete the install.  Had been running an XP laptop with the printer installed the same way and am currently using another laptop with 32 bit version of Vista that was installed the same way with no problems.  I have tried several different things to get this printer installed but still can't get it up and running.
Any help will be appreciated.

Hi... I really need help... I just bougth a new computer with vista home edition 64 bits. But my mp3 does not work with vista. I cannot use the Creative Media Explorer because the program is not associated with any other program.
Does anyone knows how I can install my mp3 correctly... without problems...
I send a message to the technical services but anything to do... I do not understand what they say...
If you can answer me in french... il will be more easy for me...
Thanks to everyone and happy new year 200.

This sounds similar to another thread I read here. I think the answer is to uninstall WMP (rollback to WMP0) and then reinstall WMP. I think there may have been something else you need to do as well.
I'll see if I can find the thread for you.

I have been working with a Nvidia rep for a week now and he says it is not their driver that is causing the problem and that I should contact HP. I don't know what else to do. I removed the working Nvidia driver (SP41066) also and Tried to install windows 8 and recieved the same message "Windows installation was not successful" and returned me to Vista 64 Bit. I don't know what else to do. Can someone please help or am I just out of luck. Thank you,

You're welcome mrchips108
By the way up for one more go. I was finally able to find someone with a possible solution for you. the user yashoshah on the tomshardware forums had the problem:
"Windows installation was not successful. Your previous version of windows will be restored. Please do not switch off your computer during this time"
SOURCE: Windows installation not successful
He fixed it by removing the HDMI cable and connecting to the monitor through DVI. After it was installed he went back to using HDMI.
How is your video card connected to the monitor: what cable and what interface is on the monitor and what interface are you using on the video card? Perhaps the Microsoft rep you spoke to was partly correct about the video card being the problem. It might be that the driver built into Windows 8 has a problem with certain configurations.
Don't forgot to say thanks by giving "Kudos" to those that help solve your problems.

• Sync Windows Mobile Treo 750 with Vista 64 bit, FINALLY DID IT!

I have just spent 3 hours trying to set up sync between my Treo 750 and my new Vista 64-bit computer.  Here's what I learned:
You have to download the Windows Mobile Device Center and its update (that's why some people felt they were downloading twice).  Even after the second download, it still didn't work, so I was told to uninstall both, then I was directed to the following link, where it only had to download once -- http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/help/synchronize/device-center.mspx
Once I did that, I kept getting an error message that my device was not recognized, and the mobile device center
said the device was not connected (and the proposed solution on the computer was to replace the device).  I tried the things that others have mentioned on this forum, but it still did not work.  After talking with AT&T, they suggested I do a soft reset on the phone.  That is what finally worked for me EXCEPT that each time my phone "timed out" (the display went blank), it would say it was not connected again.  I finally kept touching the screen so the display would not go blank.  Another option is to change the amount of time it will stay on before timing out, which I may do if this continues to be a problem when I sync in the future.
I hope this information helps someone else along the way.  It has been quite a frustrating process, as are many other things when transitioning to a new computer.
