Large Memory Pages and Mapped Byte Buffers worthwhile?

I have just been reading about large memory pages that let the OS work with memory pages of 2M instead of 4k thus reducing the Translation-Lookaside Buffer Cache misses on the CPU. However my use case revolves around using mapped bytebuffers on a machine with 32GB of memory and file sizes of 400GB or more for the file underlying the mapped buffer, my program is very memory intensive and causes the OS to do alot of paging, hence my desire for any way to speed up access. Would using large memory pages in linux and the java vm option +UseLargePages have any affect on read/writing data from mapped byte buffers or is it only applicable to data that is always resident in memory?

    SQL Developer (Version 2.1.1.64, WinXP Pro, Java 1.6, Oracle 10g R2) always uses at least 550MB of memory, if left open, for more than a day, it invariably goes up to 700-800MB.
    If I close all windows and connections, virtually no memory is reclaimed.

    The cause of hang could be figured out from the thread dump.
    I have fixed that in development code. It was happening from PL/SQL editor trying to create tooltip which locked up the connection.
    I am not sure what would lead to memory bloat even if the tool is not in use. There could be memory leak from some component. I am investigating that.
    Suggest you to keep ObjectViewers, reports & PL/SQL editor closed when not in use.
    Have Sql Array Fetch Size preference to 50 if it's higher.
    Do not have auto-refresh for Report editor.
    Keep Sql History, Find Db Object, Snippets collapsed.
    See if that helps.

    We have one pivot table(A) in our dashboard displaying , revenue against a Entity Hierarchy (i.e we have 8 levels under the hierarchy) And we have another pivot table (B) displaying revenue against a customer hierarchy (3 levels under it) .
    Both tables running fine under our OBIEE 11.1.1.6 environment (windows) .
    After deploying the same code (RPD&catalog) in a unix OBIEE 11.1.1.6 server , its throwing the below error ,while populating Pivot table A :

    The report we’re trying to build is intended to show information from eight dimensions. However, when I try to add just a few of the dimensions we get the “Query is allocating too large memory” error. Even if I filter down the information so that I only have 1 or 2 rows in the Analysis I get the error. It seems like there is something wrong that is causing our queries to become so bloated. We're using OBIEE 11.1.1.6.0.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    This sounds like a known Bug 13331507 : RFA - DEBUGGING 'QUERY IS ALLOCATING TOO LARGE MEMORY ( > 4GB)' FROM ESSBASE.
    Cause:
    A filter has been added in several lines in the 'Data Filters' Tab of the 'Users Permissions' Screen in the Administration Tool (click on Manage and then Identity menu items). This caused the MDX Filter statement to be added several times to the MDX issues to the underlying Database, which in turn caused too much memory to be used in processing the request.

  • We have an early 2008 imac and we realize it is not long for this world but we would like to get a few more months out of it until we can afford a newer one. Can we put in a larger hard drive and add some memory?

  • HELP! Problems using large memory on windows 2003(32bit) and Oracle 11g

    i have Oracle 11g installed on windows 2003 enterprise server 32bit with 6GB RAM.
    And I followed the steps to enable the Very Large Memory support:
    1. add /3GB /PAE in c:\boot.ini
    2. add AWE_WINDOW_MEMORY entry in the regitry and set it's value to 209715200
    3. as for init.ora:
    add:
    dbblock_lru_latches = 64
    db_block_size = 4096
    db_block_buffers = 262144
    remove the parameters: db_cache_size,sga_max_size
    it does work when I use Oracle 10g, but for Oracle 11g, there are some errors:
    ORA-00371: not enough shared pool memory, should be atleast **** bytes
    OR
    ORA-27102: out of memory
    Can anybody share the experience in Oracle 11g?

    It looks like you have set the memory 1gb after setting up /PAE and /3GB switch
    4096*262144=1GB...
    Then why did you set /3GB

    You can monitor the paging with vmstat or sar commands.

    You can also get the paging information on OEM home page if configured for your database.
    But I don't know if there exists a method with which one can find out how much memory per session/server process is getting paged out.

  • Large black blemish on page and pasteboard

    I am using CS3, InDesign ver. 5
    I have 100 page document (a type book, part of a 440 page book), with a large, 1 x 3 inch, solid black blemish (a double streak) that extends from the top of the paste board into the document by 1.5 inches on one page. Sometimes it disappears, sometimes it reappears. I exported the file to a PDF (high quality for print). It was not visible in the PDF, but it printed (CreateSpace digital book printing).
    The blemish cannot be selected, moved, etc.
    The file has four layers. The blemish is mostly associated with one layer. However, when I turn that layer or all layers off, only the portion of the blemish inside the text box disappears. The portion that extends beyond the text frame on the page and on the pasteboard remains.
    The blemmish appeared during a sneezing fit (allergies) while I was working on the document. I touched or clicked something, but I have no idea what. 
    I moved the text frame off the page and created a new, unlinked, frame. Most of the blemish moved with the original text frame (all that was inside the frame and part outside). I made a new frame and the blemish reappeared--now in two places: in its full size on the page, and most of it on the text frame on the pasteboard.
    I deleted the page, created a new page, and created a new text frame. As I entered new text, the blemish reappeared.
    I exported the file to Interchange Format. The blemish remained.
    I deleted the InDesign Defaults and the Saved Data files. The blemish remained.
    I can cover it with a frame filled with white: however, I have no idea if that will actually work when the book is printed. And if it does, I cannot remove that portion that covers the text.

    I exported the file as IDML and also as RTF. Opening the IDML retained the blemish.

    I exported the file as text. The shape was gone when the text file was placed into a new document.
    Then, I reapplied the fonts to the text - the named font was applied to all paragraphs in the font's group. No character.
    The default size was 12pt. I selected all the text in the frame and increased the font size to 15pt, and BINGO! It's BAAACK! It remained as I undid each action step by step.
    I suspect that the blemish is triggered by a character in one of the fonts. It doesn't seem to go away when fonts are changed back to known-normal fonts. If these fonts are creations of non-major font foundries, or if they have been modified by a mad font scientist, then the problem is likely some miscalculation in displaying the font.
    If you really want to track down the source of the problem, I'd suggest starting with a new file, set the default font to a known safe one, type new text samples for one set of glyphs, copy and paste the glyph set to make enough for your samples, then save that file, then save as a new name. In a copy, apply a suspect font to one glyph set. Save As a new name that indicates the applied font.
    Open the first-saved file, save with the name of the second font you want to test. Then apply that font to the second set of glyphs. Save again.
    Go through this routine until you've got a set of files that have all the glyph sets, but only one font applied in each file. If the blemish hasn't appeared, start back in the first file with an applied font. Select the text with the applied font and change the point size to 15pt. If that doesn't cause the problem, save the file as a new file with 15pt in the name.
    Repeat this test for all files. If the blemish appears, then you'll have an idea of which font causes it.
    If the blemish hasn't appeared, start over with the first file that has the first-applied font at 15pt. Save it to a new name. Select the second group of glyphs and apply the second font. Save. If no blemish, increase the font size of the second group of glyphs to 15pt. If no blemish, save, and repeat with all other files, aplying the n-th font to the n-th glyph group. Save to new names. Change font to 15pt. Etc.
    If still no blemish, start over with the first file. Save to a new name. Apply each n-th font to each n-th glyph group, all in this one file. If this doesn't display the blemish, try the same strategy with the remaining files.

  • Adobe Reader display page and text in tool bar and options too large.  How can this be reduced?

    My Adobe Reader (ver. XI) page for viewing and manipulating docs and the text in tool bar and menus is too large and I cannot reduce its size.   I cannot add but a few functions on the tool bar without them reverting to the drop down.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Adobe XI and that has not helped.  Do not have this problem with other software so I know its not the resolution settings of computer.
    Any way to reduce the size of the "viewing page" and its text?  I can change the size of the doc I am viewing but not the items of the page that displays the doc.

    Note :i have tried disabled scrolling on webview, so when i scroll on the page  the scroll event will be of UiScrollView, so believe no conflict with UiWebView.
    also in ios 6 i read about suppressesIncrementalRendering = True but i want to support ios5, also as UiWebViews are said to be running on main thread by default, i suspect when loading of webViews and when user tries to scroll the page, the main thread is busy, but i want the scroll of the page to be smooth  even though the loading of UiWebViews may take time.
