Larger File Icon

I've been trying to get a large file icon for file types, but when i try using code such as
ShellFolder.getShellFolder(file).getIcon(true)all i get is an icon of 32 x 32 pixels. Is there any way to get an icon of a larger size?

I believe the "larger icon" you are talking about is when you set--use large icons on--and all of your icons are scaled to a larger size by windows. I've not experienced nor seen any docs on making indiviual icons larger than the default value, nor can I get any reference to individual icon sizing in windows.
Here is a link telling you how to make all of your icons as big as you like, I believe the setting is user specific:

  • BT Cloud - large file ( ~95MB) uploads failing

I am consistently getting upload failures for any files over approximately 95MB in size.  This happens with both the Web interface, and the PC client.
With the Web interface the file upload gets to a percentage that would be around the 95MB amount, then fails showing a red icon with a exclamation mark.
With the PC client the file gets to the same percentage equating to approximately 95MB, then resets to 0%, and repeats this continuously.  I left my PC running 24/7 for 5 days, and this resulted in around 60GB of upload bandwidth being used just trying to upload a single 100MB file.
I've verified this on two PCs (Win XP, SP3), one laptop (Win 7, 64 bit), and also my work PC (Win 7, 64 bit).  I've also verified it with multiple different types and sizes of files.  Everything from 1KB to ~95MB upload perfectly, but anything above this size ( I've tried 100MB, 120MB, 180MB, 250MB, 400MB) fails every time.
I've completely uninstalled the PC Client, done a Windows "roll-back", reinstalled, but this has had no effect.  I also tried completely wiping the cloud account (deleting all files and disconnecting all devices), and starting from scratch a couple of times, but no improvement.
I phoned technical support yesterday and had a BT support rep remote control my PC, but he was completely unfamiliar with the application and after fumbling around for over two hours, he had no suggestion other than trying to wait for longer to see if the failure would clear itself !!!!!
Basically I suspect my Cloud account is just corrupted in some way and needs to be deleted and recreated from scratch by BT.  However I'm not sure how to get them to do this as calling technical support was futile.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Elinor.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi,
I too have been having problems uploading a large file (362Mb) for many weeks now and as this topic is marked as SOLVED I wanted to let BT know that it isn't solved for me.
All I want to do is share a video with a friend and thought that BT cloud would be perfect!  Oh, if only that were the case :-(
I first tried web upload (as I didn't want to use the PC client's Backup facility) - it failed.
I then tried the PC client Backup.... after about 4 hrs of "progress" it reached 100% and an icon appeared.  I selected it and tried to Share it by email, only to have the share fail and no link.   Cloud backup thinks it's there but there are no files in my Cloud storage!
I too spent a long time on the phone to Cloud support during which the tech took over my PC.  When he began trying to do completely inappropriate and irrelevant  things such as cleaning up my temporary internet files and cookies I stopped him.
We did together successfully upload a small file and sharing that was successful - trouble is, it's not that file I want to share!
Finally he said he would escalate the problem to next level of support.
After a couple of weeks of hearing nothing, I called again and went through the same farce again with a different tech.  After which he assured me it was already escalated.  I demanded that someone give me some kind of update on the problem and he assured me I would hear from BT within a week.  I did - they rang to ask if the problem was fixed!  Needless to say it isn't.
A couple of weeks later now and I've still heard nothing and it still doesn't work.
Why can't Cloud support at least send me an email to let me know they exist and are working on this problem.
I despair of ever being able to share this file with BT Cloud.
C'mon BT Cloud surely you can do it - many other organisations can!

  • Network speed affected by large file copy operations. Also, why intermittent network outages?

    Hi
I have a couple of issues on our company network.
The first is thate a single large file copy imapcts the entire network and dramatically reduces network speed and the second is that there are periodic outages where file open/close/save operations may appear to hang, and also where programs that rely on
network connectivity e.g. email, appear to hang. It is as though the PC loses it's connection to the network, but the status of the network icon does not change. For the second issue if we wait the program will respond but the wait period can be up to 1min.
The downside of this is that this affects Access databases on our server so that when an 'outage' occurs the Access client cannot recover and hangs permamnently.
We have a Windows Active Directory domain that comprises Windows 2003 R2 (soon to be decommissioned), Windows Server 2008 Standard and Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard domain controllers. There are two member servers: A file server running Windows 2008 Storage
Server and a remote access server (which also runs WSUS) running Windows Server 2012 Standard. The clients comprise about 35 Win7 PC's and 1 Vista PC.
When I copy or move a large file from the 2008 Storage Server to my Win7 client other staff experience massive slowdowns when accessing the network. Recently I was moving several files from the Storage Server to my local drive. The files comprised pairs
(e.g. folo76t5.pmm and folo76t5.pmi), one of which is less than 1MB and the other varies between 1.5 - 1.9GB. I was moving two files at a time so the total file size for each operation was just under 2GB.
While the file move operation was taking place a colleague was trying to open a 36k Excel file. After waiting 3mins he asked me for help. I did some tests and noticed that when I was not copying large files he could open the Excel file immediately. When
I started copying more data from the Storage Server to my local drive it took several minutes before his PC could open the Excel file.
I also noticed on my Win7 client that our email client (Pegasus Mail), which was the only application I had open at the time would hang when the move operation was started and it would take at least a minute for it to start responding.
Ordinarlily we work with many files
Anyone have any suggestions, please? This is something that is affecting all clients. I can't carry out file maintenance on large files during normal work hours if network speed is going to be so badly impacted.
I'm still working on the intermittent network outages (the second issue), but if anyone has any suggestions about what may be causing this I would be grateful if you could share them.
    Thanks

What have you checked for resource usage during one of these copies of a large file?
At a minimum I would check Task Manager>Resource Monitor.  In particular check the disk and network usage.  Also, look at RAM and CPU while the copy is taking place.
What RAID level is there on the file server?
There are many possible areas that could be causing your problem(s).  And it could be more than one thing.  Start by checking these things.  And go from there.
    Hi, JohnB352
Thanks for the suggestions. I have monitored the server and can see that the memory is nearly maxed out with a lot of hard faults (varies between several hundred to several thousand), recorded during normal usage. The Disk and CPU seem normal.
I'm going to replace the RAM and double it up to 12GB.
Thanks! This may help with some other issues we are having. I'll post back after it has been done.
    [Edit]
Forgot to mention: there are 6 drives in the server. 2 for the OS (Mirrored RAID 1) and 4 for the data (Striped RAID 5).

  • Copying hangs when copying large files from DVD

I'm having trouble copying large files (>2GB) from DVDs to my built-in hard drive. When I drag the file icon from the DVD window to the desktop, the progress bar pops up almost immediately, and says "0 KB of 2.3 GB copied" and "Estimated time left: 1 minute" -- and then it just sits there, doing nothing. In some cases, after five minutes or so of inactivity, the copy finally begins... but most of the time it never does. Force-Quit doesn't help; the only way out is to do an emergency restart and try again.
This problem began when I upgraded to Tiger, and several members of my office group have been experiencing the same problem on their own computers as well.
I've poked around the forum looking for answers but the only thing I could find that looked related was a conflict between iSight and some third-party external hard drives... but none of us have iSight, and none of us are using third-party external drives, so clearly that's not the issue we'rehaving.
    Any help out there?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Michael, I occasionally notice anomolous behaviour when files get dragged between volumes. Mostly the copying window shows an accurate and immediate indication of what's going on, but other times it just looks like nothing's happening, the display never changes, yet, it is in fact copying the files over. Now, if you're copying 2gb files from DVD to HD, it's gonna take some time, more than 5 minutes, so I'm wondering how long you've left it before forcing it to quit?

  • Getting large file sizes in AppleScript...

For starters I am new to AppleScript. Please excuse my lack of knowledge.
I am trying to get file sizes for large files and kicking that out to a text file. Problem is that all these files are a gigabyte and up. When I use:
set fileSIZE to size of (info for chosenFile) as string
    --result is 1.709683486E+9
    I also tried using:
    tell application "Finder"
set theSize to physical size of chosenFile
    end tell
    --result is 1.724383232E+9
So, my question is there another way that shows me the bytes in this format "1,709,683,486" bytes.
The "size of (info for chosenFile)" shows the right numbers "1.709683486". I don't really need the commas. I had a larger file of 44GB and the result was 4.4380597717E+10.
How do I remove the ".", the "E+9" or "E+10"?

looks like hubionmac has found a winner.
    perhaps not:

Notice that ls -l return the data fork size in Tiger.
Notice the clever way of working with the resource fork in unix ( /rsrc ). I found this in juliejuliejulie's code in another post.

    set theDataSize to (do shell script "ls -l " & theItem & " | awk '{print $5}'")
    log "theDataSize = " & theDataSize
set theRsrc to (POSIX path of theFile) & "/rsrc"
    log "theRsrc = " & theRsrc

    log "theRsrcSize = " & theRsrcSize
    set output to do shell script "echo \"" & theDataSize & "+" & theRsrcSize & "\" | bc "

After updating from Snow Leopard to Lion all my files in the folders is rearranged and files icons size is 512 x 512 with maximum grid space. I adjusting each folder icon size back to normal but after reopening that folder all files is out of order again.  Is anybody experience same issue?
Also I have brand new battery in my 17" MBP and OS Lion eat battery like a cake.

I believe this has been brought up many times, aand no solution has been found.

  • Ok to store large files on desktop?

Ok to store large files on desktop?
Are there consequences (running slow) when storing a large files or numerous files on the desktop?
Sometimes I use the desktop to stores photos until I complete a project. There are other files on the desktop that I could remove if it causes the computer to slow down. If not, I'll keep them there because it's easy and convenient.
    I have 4G of memory.

    Hi Junk,
I can't think of any consequences to storing your large files on your desktop. After all, from your system's point of view, your desktop is just another folder. However, there is some system consequence to storing lots of files there, as it will decrease performance. But with 4GB of memory, I'm not sure how much of a difference you might see. And there's a big gap between "I'm storing 15 photos on my desktop" and "I can no longer see my hard disk icon in this mess." If the idea of even potential system slowdowns bothers you, create a work folder and leave it on your desktop to drop all of those photos in. If you're not getting too insane with the amount, though, I'm sure you'll be fine.
    Hope that helps!

  • IMac disconnects when downloading large files

The internet on my iMac is a wired connection, hooked up through my router. It works perfectly fine and never disconnects while I'm browsing, playing games, or anything like that. When I download small files, things are still fine. Whenever I download something that takes more than a few minutes, my connection will shut itself off like clockwork. It then takes a minute or two to kick back in and resume, but then after another few minutes it will disconnect itself again. It isn't my ISP, since my laptop (Windows 7) downloads fine on this same network. My iPhone and iPad also have no problem downloading large files on this network either. What could be causing this strange issue with my iMac?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Low-res File Icons In Finder!

Not all of my file icons are high-res in Finder. For example Web Internet Location files, Disk Image files and MP3 files all have low-res icons. Is this a Leopard bug or did something go wrong during the upgrade from Tiger to Leopard on my machine?
How can I get all of these icons showing up in high-res?

While Quick Look decodes a surprisingly large number of file types, it doesn't decode them all. Oddly enought, considering that webloc files are created in Finder out of Safari, it doesn't do anything with them: one would think it would at least display the URL, but it doesn't. It also doesn't display Safari's webarchive files, which is even stranger (and worse, in my opinion). Apple needs to write the code to get these to display in Quick Look. I'm sure they will, especially for Safari's own webarchives. The same thing for various other file types that don't currently display in Quick Look: someone has to write some code to create QuickLook generator plug-ins. There are many that are simply buit-in, and I have two add ons from Apple: one for GarageBand files and one for iWork files, they are here:
    "/Library/QuickLook"
As developers begin to take advantage no doubt more will show up when you update your third-party programs.

  • After upgrade - desktop changed, files, icons, etc. disappeared

I just updated to 10.4.7 from 10.3.9 and after a restart, my desktop is totally changed. Program alias icons, files, folders, background, etc. - everything - is gone. I now have the default blue screen with standard LARGE program icons in the huge dock at the bottom of the screen. What happened? Where is my stuff? Help!
    Thanks

Open two Finder windows and arrange them so that both the Users folder and the folder containing your data are visible. In the Users folder, rename the folder which currently has the house icon to temp, and then drag the folder with your user name into Users. Log out and back in.

  • File Icons

I'm using the two lines of code that I found in another Thread to get the system icon for a file and I'm using that icon in a JLabel. This is working and giving me the icons for most files, but so far there is one type of file I have found that this won't give me the icon for. It doesn't give the icon for .html files. Instead it gives the windows default "no file icon" icon that it gives for unrecognized file types. Why is this not giving me the correct file icon for .html files? (for my computer it should be the firefox icon).
    ShellFolder shellFolder = ShellFolder.getShellFolder(file);
    myLabel.setIcon(new ImageIcon(shellFolder.getIcon(true)));

These icons are larger than the icons returned by FileSystemView.
I still have not been able to resolve my issue. The .html/.htm file icons don't show up. I submitted a bug report a few days after I started this thread and still have not received any response from sun about it.

  • Mail stuck sending large file

I have just sent an email in Mail with a large attachment.  For 2 days my sent icon has been working and no other mails can get sent.  It is not giving me the option to stop sending, or reduce size.  It is just stuck trying to send it.  Help!

    Janet,
Is the message with too large attachment still trying to send?  If so, again quit Mail, but this time, in the Finder, open Home, and while holding down the Option key click on Go in the menubar.  This will allow you to click on Library, then the Mail folder.  Then look in the Mailboxes folder for the Outbox.mbox folder.  Remove it by draggin it to the Desktop (later to the trash, likely).  Now relaunch Mail again.  When you next try to send a normal sized message, Mail will recreate the Outbox.mbox folder.  (Not booted into Lion at the moment, so unable to confirm all of this, but is how it could be done in all other versions of Mail.
Are you trying to put the large file somewhere as a backup, or are you, as I first thought, trying to send it to someone?  File on iCloud are not meant for sharing with others, unlike iDisk.
    More info, please.

  • Quicklook consumes a lot of memory on column view previewing large files

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, everytime I click on a large file (like a disk image, DMG, ISO) on finder's column view, it starts spinning the icon and quicklookd consumes a lot of memory even causing other apps to swap to disk. After the preview icon is done, the quicklookd memory is dealocated.
This do not happen on Lion.

Just found out that a plugin (QLStephen - http://whomwah.github.com/qlstephen/) was causing the problem.
Removed it from /Library/Quicklook, restarted quicklook (qlmanage -r) and the problem is gone.

  • Saving jpeg and png files large file size

Ive recently purchased web premium 5.5 and Im trying to save files in jpeg and png format in Photoshop and Im getting unexpectedly large file sizes, for example I save a simple logo image 246x48 which consists of only 3 basic colours and when I save it as a jpeg quality 11 it reports the file size in the finder as 61.6k, I save it as a png file and its 60.2k also I cropped the image to 190x48 and saved it as a png and the file size is actually larger at 61.9k saving as a jpeg at quality 7 the files size is a still relatively large 54k.
I have a similar png non indexed colour logo on my mac I saved in CS3 on a pc which is actually larger at 260x148 and it's only 17k and that logo is actually more complex with a gloss effect over part of it. Whats going on and how do I fix it, It's making Photoshop useless especially when saving for the web
    Thanks

Thanks I had considered that but all my old files are reporting the correct files sizes I have been experimenting and fireworks saves the file at png 24 at 2.6k and jpegs at 5.1k, but I don't really want to have to save the files twice once cut from the comp in photoshop and again in fireworks juggling between the two applications is a bit inconvenient even with just one file but especially when you have potentially hundreds of files to save.
Ive also turned off icon and windows thumbnail in photoshop preferences and although this has decreased the file size they are still quite large at 27k and save for the web is better at 4k for the png and 16k for the jpeg. Is there anyway to get Fireworks file saving performance in Photoshop ? it seems strange that the compression in Photoshop would be second rate in comparison to fireworks given they are both developed by Adobe and Photoshop is Adobes primary image editing software.

  • Uploading large files to share fails - advice appreciated

I wondered if anyone could help me with uploading large files.
The ability to distribute files to clients with the included 20Gb of server space was part of the reason I signed up to Creative Cloud; unfortunatly I'm having very mixed results and I'm constantly having to fall back on the free DropBox service which seems much more reliable.
I'm working on a MacPro - 10.6.8 with a optical fibre based ISP 20Mb/s service; the service is, dare I say, usually very quick and reliable.  Before uploading a large file I set energy saver to "never sleep" in case I wonder off for a cup of tea, but enevitably come back to what looks like a "stuck" upload.  I've tried three times today to send a 285Mb file and they all failed so I reverted to sending the file by DropBox... with no problem - I've also sent files in excess of 1Gb by DropBox in the past without an issue.
Todays file had reached about 50% according to the little progress bar.. it then stopped.   (it's a shame the progrees bar can't relay the actual upload speed and a percentage like DropBox so you can see what's going on)
I have to state, I'm not a DropBox "fanboy" but it just seems to work...
Are their any tricks or settings that could make Adobe's 20Gb of space a functioning part of my workflow?  It would be great to feel confident in it.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Either Firefox or Chrome would be a good alternative.
I would see if one of these browsers works for upload but we can also debug the issue on Safari.
Here are the steps to debug on Safari:
Add the Develop menu to Safari. From the menu choose Safari > Preferences. Select the Advanced tab and check the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
Once logged onto the Creative Cloud Files page (https://creative.adobe.com/files) Ctrl + Click anywhere on the page and from the browser context menu choose Inspect Element.
In the window that opens in the bottom half of the browser click on the Clock icon (mouse over info tip says Instrument) and on the left select Network Requests.
Try the upload and you will see various network requests. Look for those whose Name is "notification". When you select one in the list there will be an arrow next to "notification" and clicking on it will take you to the details. See screen shot. If successful you will have a Status of 200. Some of these "notification" items are for your storage quota being updated, but the one we want is for the successful upload.
