Laserwriter 360 and leopard

I just bought a new laptop MacPro. with the newest OS. Do I need to download an updated driver to use my Laserwriter 360 and where would I find that.

That driver is included in OS X.

  • Laserwriter 360 and Tiger 10.4.6 Update

I have a Laserwriter 360 that is connected to my G4 via the an ethernet connection using an Asante adapter. When I first loaded Tiger, the printer worked fine. However, after I updated to 10.4.6 two things occurred. First - The update loaded a 2nd copy of Laserwriter 8 and second it now shows 2 images of the printer on the desktop (both of which are X'ed out). When I attempt to configure Laserwriter 8 it does not display any printers. I have tried everything I can think of to restore comunication with the Laserwriter 360. Nothing has worked. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
PowerMac G4 (AGP Graphics)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Those AppleTalk-over-Ethernet to AppleTalk/LocalTalk adapters have a habit of not re-acquiring printers that drop out for any reason. The Asante is worse than the Farallon. The solution to this problem (which may or may not be your immediate problem) is to power off the printer and the adapter, power on the printer and make sure it is ready to go, then power on the adapter, then look again to see if the printer is there.
"LaserWriter 8" and "Multiple Printers on the Desktop, X-ed out" sound like you are running Classic. Is this a problem is Mac OS X 10.4, in Classic, or both?

  • Apple LaserWriter 360 and OS 10.6.4

    Hi everyone.
I've got a new 27" iMac running OS 10.6.4. My old, trusty Apple LaserWriter 360 was connected to my older iMac through an Asante Talk box. Now that Apple has discontinued support for Apple Talk, I've ditched the Asante box and have purchased a Parallel-to-USB cable for connecting the LaserWriter to the new machine. I downloaded and installed GutenPrint, and everything printed fine ..... the first time!
Today, I tried to print again, but every time I sent something to the printer, the printer would say it was paused. I opened up the Printer & Fax settings in the System Preferences, located the machine, and it said "Printer Offline."
I restarted the printer several times, toggled through the numbers in the back of the printer, reset the printer utility in the Mac System Preferences, and turned network sharing for the printer off and on. (These are all remedies I had seen suggested online, BTW.)
But still, the printer indicates that it's offline. I thought, perhaps the new Parallel-to-USB cable was faulty, but if it were, wouldn't it have failed to print the first day I tried it? Also, if the cable were faulty, wouldn't I be unable to see this printer at all?
Does anyone have any other suggestions, besides buying a new printer? Thanks very much.
    -- Tom

OK. The new Parallel to USB cable arrived today, and now I'm more confused than ever. I connected the printer with the new cable, set the dip switch in the back of the printer to "1", and nothing happened. So I set the dip switch to "0" and voila! The printer was suddenly recognized by the computer. I tried printing a Word document, and although it was kind of slow, it printed just fine. Then I printed a 57-page PDF file, and that worked perfectly. Next, I tried to see if I could print from my other iMac through wireless printer sharing. The other iMac saw the printer just fine, and I sent a document to print. But it just hung up for so long that I ended up deleting the file, clearing the printer queue, and turning off network sharing for printing (I don't need to print from the other machine anyway).
But now, the iMac that the printer is hard-wired to says that the printer is "off-line" !!! No matter what I do, I can't print from it anymore. By the way, this is what happened with the first USB-to-Parallel cable I purchased: I was able to print a few pages, and then the printer mysteriously went "off-line."
So I don't think it's the cable, because the iMac still sees the printer. And it was able to print several documents before mysteriously going off-line. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm at a total loss here. Thanks!!!

  • Personal Laserwriter NTR and Leopard

I would really like to use my laserwriter with Leopard, but I can't seem to get it going. I have an asantetalk so I would be connecting the printer to the computer via the ethernet port. Is there any place that has step-by-step instructions in how to do this? I know the printer driver came with Leopard, but when I click add printer it shows up in the list but then when I try to print it prints to my Lexmark C510 laser printer. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you in advance! Cindy

    Craig-
You are correct that Mac OS X does not come with a Postscript Rasterizer. But a Postscript level 2 printer does not need one (older printers like the ImageWriter certainly do). The computer sends postscript level 2 directly to the printer, and as long as the printer is level 2 or better, the printer rasterizes and images the pages itself without issue.
Using the asantetalk, the biggest issue is that the asantetalk does not re-acquire printers that disappear for any reason. I think the Farallon adapter is slightly better at this issue, but it sometimes has the same problem. The solution, described in the asantetalk documentation, is to guarantee that the asantetalk is powered up LAST, when everything else is stable and running.
So turn on the computer, turn on the printer, wait for the printer self-test lights to stop blinking, wait a little longer, then power up the asantetalk.
The phone cord you use must have all four conductors present. Sometimes you find one with only two. Check the plug for four brassy connector pins.
There is one more obscure issue that sometimes comes up with PhoneNet connectors. There should be something plugged into every phone jack. Where there is no cord to connect to the next device, there should be a "phone-jack mounted terminating resistor", a 120 Ohm resistor crimped into the outer pins on a phone plug. Genuine farallon ones had the resistor looped through a nylon washer.
To make a terminating resistor by hand, buy a surface mount wall jack with modular jack, a phone cord, and a 120 Ohm resistor. Connect the 120 Ohm resistor across the outer (Yellow and Black) lugs inside the wall jack. Plug it all together and you should be working great.

  • Apple LaserWriter Select 360  and OSX 5.1.2 upgrade

My LaserWriter 360 has performed perfectly from Tiger to Leopard 5.1. After upgrading to 5.1.2 it would NOT print. The LaserWriter is connected to the computer with a Ethernet cable into an Asante box,and then into the printer. This has never failed for over 6 years and since OS X came out. The Apple LaserWriter 360 driver DOES exist in print driver lists in the Library. I Archived and Installed back to the OSX 5.1 version hoping that might fix my problem but it did not.
I have gone into "Network" and "Printer Fax" — tried everything with no success. I hate to part with this printer as it performs great when it was working before the 5.1.2 upgrade. Any suggestions?

Help! Apple advised me that there are very smart people here, smarter than they, who might be able to help me. I'm having the same problem getting my MacBook OS 10.5 to work (at all) with my Laserwriter Select 360. It is not supported (7 years) by Apple. It worked wirelessly when I first set up borrowing the driver from my Ibook. My household uses 3 ibooks with great success including the one I hoped to replace with my MacBook. After 5 months, and trying various solutions posted here, by some fluke it printed once yesterday.
Can anyone tell me where I can get a driver that will work wirelessly with my airport? Apple said I have a Guttenberg (?) default in the OS software, which is not visible in the printer library, but can only be plugged directly into the MacBook via an adapter. This would mean the rest of the Mac users in my home (Ibooks) would not have access to that port and I want to be wireless. I've read many happy reports here and hope someone very wise can help me. Apple says this printer never worked wirelessly. Somehow I completed all of my graduate education using it wirelessly so I have hope that someone here can help. I look forward to hearing from you and appreciate the time you've taken to read this request. Best wishes to all! Kim

  • IMac (Late 2006) Stalls with EFI 1.2 and Leopard

A few days ago, I installed both the iMac 1.2 EFI Firmware update and Leopard on my late 2006 20" iMac. Since then, I've seen random momentary stalls throughout the system.
It sometimes happens while scrolling a web page, displaying a sheet, opening a stack, browsing CoverFlow, and so on. I don't know how to intentionally recreate it, it just seems to happen. It often (always?) seems to coincide with some disk activity.
I don't remember this behavior on the same hardware in the past, so either it's something with the firmware update or Leopard. Has anyone seen anything else like this?
    Thanks in advance.

Some people reported various bugs after installing the firmware update. Shutting it off and turning it back was all that was needed to fix the bugs.

  • Endnote X1 and Leopard

Has anyone tried using Endnote X1 and Leopard? I can't open any files ("the document blabla couldn't be opened"), nor can I create a new library ("Failed to create library").
Anyone any ideas if this is fixable?

Fixed the problem. Originally I had no problems keeping the Endnote files wherever I liked, however it now only works with the Endnote files in Users/Library. A bit weird, but I can live with it.

  • Can I run Tiger and Leopard on the same computer

    Hi folks.
I've been meaning to install Leopard for ages but have never got round to it (I bought the retail box when it first came out). I have upgraded my RAM to 2GB and my hard drive to 320GB with no problems.
My upgraded hard drive has been partitioned into 2 equal parts of 160GB. These appear on desktop as Mackintosh HD1 and HD2. HD1 is the disk with all my files, music, OS etc and HD2 is empty
I have 2 bootable clones of my present system - one is on a 160GB external and the other is the original 80GB HD that I replaced.
My question is this - can I install Leopard on to my 160GB external HD, then clone it on to the empty HD2. If I do this would I be able to run both Tiger and Leopard on the same Macbook?
Is there any problems with this plan? Would I be able to transfer between the 2 OS and how do I install Leopard on the external drive. Is it just a case of inserting the Leopard DVD and choose the external drive as the target?
    As usual thanks in advance

    # Original Tiger in the internal HD, New Leopard in the external HD.
    # New Leopard in the internal, Legacy cloned Tiger in the external.
    # Split internal, one partition with Tiger, another with Leopard.
Leopard is backwardly compatible with older Macs, just make sure yours fulfills the minimum system requirements, both use the same filesystem format, so each can see the other. You can't run both at the same time, unless you purchase the server version of Leopard and run it virtualized. 99.9% of Firewire external HD's are bootable, some USB's are bootable but have to test first. You can choose which system to boot from by pressing the Option key at boot time, before the chime. Just make sure the external HDD is plugged in and turned on if that's where you want to boot from.
When I migrated my PBG4 from Panther to Tiger, got an external FW HDD, cloned Panther onto it, upgraded using Archive and Install, cleaned up, customized and tested it. When I was satisfied all was ok, cloned the original Panther onto another partition of the external HDD, wiped and tested for failure the internal HDD, then cloned the known good and tested Tiger into it. Only thing that died along the way was my old and ancient Photoshop v2.x, that refused to run on Tiger.

  • 1st generation MacBook, battery and Leopard issues; looking for help please

I have a 1st generation MacBook that started having battery problems immediately after installing Leopard. it was the same issue many others have complained about; battery life shortened and shutting down while on battery power with no warning. I have never had that problem while using Tiger. I experienced this with both 10.5.0 and the stand alone upgrade of 10.5.1 using an erase and install method.
(BTW, as a side note: I'm religious about calibrating my battery every month and use a program called "CoconutBattery" to document the results. Prior to Leopard, the battery measured 97-99% capacity. Three days after Leopard was installed it was time for another check, the result was 74% capacity.)
I had a clone backup of Tiger and immediately restored my MacBook, but the problem followed Tiger. I have Applecare and called support. Both myself and the tech found it rather hard to believe that the battery just suddenly failed coincidentally after the Leopard install. We went through the regular things; SMC reset, firmware checks, diagnostics, repair permissions, etc.
We believe it has to do with the Battery Updater package. I had gone between both versions of 1.2 and 1.3, but the problem remained with both Tiger and Leopard. The tech decided to send me a new battery (it's on the way) and I wish to try installing Leopard again. As long as I have my cloned Tiger image, all I have to lose is my time, but hopefully, not another battery! I would honestly like to get Leopard running on this machine.
But... here's my question. In reading through these discussions in both the Leopard and MacBook forum, there doesn't seem to be any consensus of which BatteryUpdater package to use. The Apple tech honestly told me he didn't know. Also, if the BU package "writes" to the battery (which it states it does), can it be downgraded once v1.3 has been installed? I mean, should I leave the battery out, install Leopard, then manually update BU to v1.2 before installing the battery (if possible)? I do plan on testing the new battery with my Tiger install, just to verify it is working as it was before.
There are a lot of people here claiming to be knowledgeable about Leopard, never had any problems with a variety of machines, etc, etc, so I would appreciate your input. Please don't speculate, but if you're using a version of BU that works with Leopard and your 1st Gen MacBook, I would appreciate you telling me about it. I have tried to document and methodically relate everything I've done so far, but if you need additional information, just let me know.
I noticed Leopard had installed BU v1.3 when I checked it, so it must use that as default, since I noticed Tiger had v1.2.
OR, am I way off base on this? Can anyone think of another reason I may have had this problem? Am I barking up the wrong tree by concentrating on the BatteryUpdater package? Is it possible all these batteries are failing under a Leopard install maybe due to some unknown reason?
Any knowledgeable advice or suggestions are welcome, thanks!

Well, Ding Dang y'all... it appears the battery was the culprit. I received my replacement battery from Apple and followed the same steps and everything seems to be working fine.
It sure was strange that the battery started this problem immediately after Leopard was installed... I don't know what to say about that, unless BatteryUpdater v1.3 started the chain of events.
In case it helps someone else, here's exactly what I did (rebooted through each step):
    - Backed up data; unauthorized computer from iTunes
    - Erase and install from the Leopard disc, while keeping the old battery in
    - Installed Leopard, did software updates except for delta 10.5.1 update
    - Applied combo update of 10.5.1 from separately downloaded file
    - Found BatteryUpdater Bundle (BU) of v1.3, moved to trash, rebooted
    - Ran software updates, BU v1.2 was found and installed
    - Then, swapped out battery to new battery
    - Tested unit, seems to be okay now, no shutdown issues, battery runtime seems normal
Thanks to all that had advice and suggestions. It was enough to get me to try it again. Now, I have two more machines to upgrade, since these are production machines, I'll probably wait awhile. But, having this is a real treat.
    Have a great holiday everyone!

  • Xbox 360 and Linksys E3000

    Hello,
I'm having quite some trouble with the new E3000 and my Xbox 360 Slim Model. I thought that the E3000 had like 4 antennas which should broaden the SSID Broadcast/Wifi Signal. Now when I try to scan for wireless networks on my Xbox360 it can't find the signal the E3000 is broadcasting. The E3000 is on the bottom floor and the 360 is on the first floor. Before this I had a WRT54G Linksys router and that one had no problem getting signal to the Xbox360. The E3000 shouldn't have this problem right, because it has more antennas. Another weird thing is that my laptop, which almost sits next to my 360, has no trouble at all finding the SSID/WiFi broadcast...
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I just want to connect my E3000 to my Xbox 360.
PS: I have upgraded to the latest firmware.

Xbox 360 and Linksys E3000Bad news guys. Whatever you were told about the xbox 360 being compatible with wireless n at 5GHz was probably misleading. Please work through the following link: Work your way through this:- http://www.unofficialguidetolive.co.uk/faqs/114-troubleshooting-and-improving-wireless
Pay attention to the following, and I quote from the above link:
"...The Internal Wireless N Adapter for the Xbox 360 S 250GB
As well as all of the points above to consider you also need to be aware that some Wireless N routers can work at 2.4GHz and 5GHz or both. <<<<The new internal Wireless N adapter will only work at 2.4Ghz>>>> so ensure you have this enabled. It has also been found that in some cases it does not work with WEP and prefers WPA2-PSK (sometimes called Personal) with AES encryption (not TKIP) so in summary for the internal wireless adapter these configureations seem to work best-"
We could have saved everyone a lot of time if the XBOX 360 support would have just admitted this from the start. NO 5GHZ compatibility from XBOX Wireless N adapter.
If there is a way to upgrade the wireless N adapter in the XBOX please post for the rest of us.

  • Xbox 360 and WRT300N

    Hi,
I have an xbox 360 and a wireless router (WRT300N).  My xbox 360 can connect to the router wirelessly and i get a great signal, but when i try to play online, for example, halo 3 slayer games,  my game turns all glitchy and disorted.  My character gliches through walls and my game freezes when I die.  I have tried with other routers at friend'shouses and the games work perfectly, so i know it is my router (WRT300N) and not my xbox 360. What can I do to fix this?

1st, open up the router user interface. To do this, open up a web browser and on the address bar type the numbers 192.168.1.1 (username just leave it blank, password as a default is admin).
Then go to the Applications and Gaming Subtab. Input the following values:
    Application: XBOX
    Start: 3074
    End: 3074
    Protocol: Both
    IP Address: 192.168.1.5
    - Save Settings
2nd, assign a MANUAL IP Address value to your XBOX:
    IP: 192.168.1.5
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Then save the settings and go ahead , have fun.

  • Xbox 360 and nas storage for streaming media

    Hi there,
I have an xbox 360 and watch movies on it through my network that are stored on my home PC, this means that I have to have my home PC on whenever I want to watch a movie. What I would like to do is have a NAS storage device that I can store all my movies on that is on the same notwork so that I can then watch the movies on my xbox without the need for the PC being on. Obviously I would want the NAS to be seen by the computer's I have on my network also.
I way thinking about getting this item Western Digital - My Book Live 1TB External Home Network Drive - Black but am not sure if the xbox will see it? or is there a better solution for around the same price which is expandable?
    Thanks.

You'd have to get a real home or business NAS product to stream to the 360 and those are not in the same price range as the product you are looking at.

  • XBOX 360 and FiOS

Hey again everybody. Was wondering if anybody else has had this issue that I have been having with my 360 directly connected to the verizon MI424-WR gateway router. The issue I am experiencing is when I turn on my 360 and it's just starting up and signing into my profile and onto LIVE, sometimes it takes forever and sometimes not at all. What seems to be working for now is rebooting the router, but it's kind of anoying to have to do that so often. I can remember when I had my Linksys router (the WRT54GS) with DSL from Verizon, that thing was rock solid. Maybe there's a firmware upgrade now or something. I will keep researching anyways. OK, thanks for your help guys.

Yeah, it's just a shame that there are problems like this. I wish Verizon went with Linksys for their routers... I guess they have a pretty good deal worked out with motorolla with bothe the set-top-boxes and networking equipment....Ah! oh well.

  • Xbox 360 and my Wireless N setup.

I am currently using WRT350N (the storage version of the 300N) and a WUSB300N for my for my laptop using wireless N. They all work pretty well together. I recently got an xbox360 and I am looking to get it connected to the internet and I have a few options for that. I'd like to get some questions answered before I actually choose an option.
    1. One option is to get the default Xbox360 Wireless USB adapter is a bit expensive and is a G only adapter, I assume I would have to switch all my other devices to G to get this to work correct? It would be nice to keep using N and not have to flip settings when ever I switch from laptop to 360.
    2. Another option is to get a WAP4400N wireless access point. This is about $150 but is more versatile. Could I hook this directly to my 360 and use it to connect to my WRT350N with out any issues?
    3. Lastly an option is to forget all this and just deal with having to run a 50' cable when ever I want to connect to xbox live for $5.
Message Edited by Juiblex on 09-10-2007 10:52 AM

Same here, I recently got a WRT300N router. I got the 802.11n wireless adapter for my PC and I have an xbox 360 with the standard xbox 360 wireless adapter by microsoft.
I setup my network. When I double click My Network Places I can see all the devices on my network. I can see my xbox, my router, and my computer. I have my firewall completely disabled. I have enabled full sharing of all my media to my xbox. My xbox is able to connect to the router and I am able to log into xbox live too. Everything appears to be working both my PC and Xbox connected to the router just fine. My computer can see my xbox.
I'm running Vista Ultimate and when I try to add my xbox as a media center extender, WMC cannot find my xbox. I enter the 8 digit code but when I try to connect Windows Media Center cannot for some reason see my xbox or find it. Likewize with the xbox. It cannot find a computer running the WMC server.
Now here's the wierd part. I hook up a hard wired connection from my PC to my router (not my xbox, my router, my xbox is still communicating wirelessly). All of the sudden a notice pops up in my icon tray saying that windows has detected a media center extender and asks me if I want to setup up with WMC. So now I repeate the same process and try to add the xbox again inside WMC. It works perfectly. I am able to run media center and stream TV, etc.
Now that it's all setup, I removed the wired connection and WMC can no longer see my xbox. I think it has something to do with the fact that xbox is wireless g and the router and PC are communicating with wireless n. However it doesn't make sense because the xbox communicates through the router anyway and the router is backwards compatible with g so can anyone help with this problem?
    Thanks

  • G4 and Leopard

Now, according to Apple, 10.5 with be totally 64-bit, which, I suspect will be a problem with G4 users as this PPC processor is a 32-bit processor (and not 64-bit).
I was wondering what Apple will be doing about this ? With G4 users just have to 'make do' with just a 32-bit version or with 64-bit be emulated in some way ?
    Or am I wrong in assuming the G4 isn't a 64-bit processor ?

As I understand it the Unix under-pinnings of OS X were 64-bit in Tiger. 64-bit applications could be used, but only from the command line/terminal application/Unix shell. With Leopard 64-bit support has simply been extended upwards to include certain development frameworks such as Cocoa, allowing 64-bit applications to be used from the Mac GUI with the usual Mac OS look and feel.
As a G4 user I don't think anything will change between Tiger and Leopard. 64-bit support will now be included from top to bottom, but not at the expense of 32-bit support. In a sense we have to 'make do' anyway due to the hardware limitations. For example, one of the advantages of a 64-bit processor and OS is that more memory can be addressed. However, the G4s have a maximum of 4 DIMM slots with 512MB per DIMM, so we're limited to 2GB of memory at the hardware level anyway even if the OS does support more. IMHO, unless you're using specialised applications or need to be able to address huge amounts of memory (for example if you're working with huge image files), 32-bit is fine. If this isn't the case, you should probably be using a G5 or Mac Pro anyway.
