1st generation MacBook, battery and Leopard issues; looking for help please

I have a 1st generation MacBook that started having battery problems immediately after installing Leopard. it was the same issue many others have complained about; battery life shortened and shutting down while on battery power with no warning. I have never had that problem while using Tiger. I experienced this with both 10.5.0 and the stand alone upgrade of 10.5.1 using an erase and install method.
(BTW, as a side note: I'm religious about calibrating my battery every month and use a program called "CoconutBattery" to document the results. Prior to Leopard, the battery measured 97-99% capacity. Three days after Leopard was installed it was time for another check, the result was 74% capacity.)
I had a clone backup of Tiger and immediately restored my MacBook, but the problem followed Tiger. I have Applecare and called support. Both myself and the tech found it rather hard to believe that the battery just suddenly failed coincidentally after the Leopard install. We went through the regular things; SMC reset, firmware checks, diagnostics, repair permissions, etc.
We believe it has to do with the Battery Updater package. I had gone between both versions of 1.2 and 1.3, but the problem remained with both Tiger and Leopard. The tech decided to send me a new battery (it's on the way) and I wish to try installing Leopard again. As long as I have my cloned Tiger image, all I have to lose is my time, but hopefully, not another battery! I would honestly like to get Leopard running on this machine.
But... here's my question. In reading through these discussions in both the Leopard and MacBook forum, there doesn't seem to be any consensus of which BatteryUpdater package to use. The Apple tech honestly told me he didn't know. Also, if the BU package "writes" to the battery (which it states it does), can it be downgraded once v1.3 has been installed? I mean, should I leave the battery out, install Leopard, then manually update BU to v1.2 before installing the battery (if possible)? I do plan on testing the new battery with my Tiger install, just to verify it is working as it was before.
There are a lot of people here claiming to be knowledgeable about Leopard, never had any problems with a variety of machines, etc, etc, so I would appreciate your input. Please don't speculate, but if you're using a version of BU that works with Leopard and your 1st Gen MacBook, I would appreciate you telling me about it. I have tried to document and methodically relate everything I've done so far, but if you need additional information, just let me know.
I noticed Leopard had installed BU v1.3 when I checked it, so it must use that as default, since I noticed Tiger had v1.2.
OR, am I way off base on this? Can anyone think of another reason I may have had this problem? Am I barking up the wrong tree by concentrating on the BatteryUpdater package? Is it possible all these batteries are failing under a Leopard install maybe due to some unknown reason?
Any knowledgeable advice or suggestions are welcome, thanks!

Well, Ding Dang y'all... it appears the battery was the culprit. I received my replacement battery from Apple and followed the same steps and everything seems to be working fine.
It sure was strange that the battery started this problem immediately after Leopard was installed... I don't know what to say about that, unless BatteryUpdater v1.3 started the chain of events.
In case it helps someone else, here's exactly what I did (rebooted through each step):
- Backed up data; unauthorized computer from iTunes
- Erase and install from the Leopard disc, while keeping the old battery in
- Installed Leopard, did software updates except for delta 10.5.1 update
- Applied combo update of 10.5.1 from separately downloaded file
- Found BatteryUpdater Bundle (BU) of v1.3, moved to trash, rebooted
- Ran software updates, BU v1.2 was found and installed
- Then, swapped out battery to new battery
- Tested unit, seems to be okay now, no shutdown issues, battery runtime seems normal
Thanks to all that had advice and suggestions. It was enough to get me to try it again. Now, I have two more machines to upgrade, since these are production machines, I'll probably wait awhile. But, having this is a real treat.
Have a great holiday everyone!

Oh, you do have the C2D! That's great!
I'm no technical expert, I just like to help out whenever or wherever I can so... I don't know if this can help you, but let me tell you about how I got my Snow Leopard to run in 64 bit mode. When I got my (late 2008) iMac it was running in 32 bit mode under Tiger (2.4 GHz/Core 2 Duo). I eventually upgraded to Snow Leopard & it was running in 32 bit mode (by default) w/1 GB RAM.
Somewhere along the line, I happened to watch a YouTube Video that showed how to upgrade an iMac's RAM, so I ordered two - 2GB sticks of Crucial RAM and then - under the guidance of the 14 or 15 year-old young man who posted the video on YouTube; wearing a rather fashionable static-electricity-neutralizer-wrist-strap, I removed 1GB of RAM & plugged in the 4GBs of RAM. So - boom like that, it was like I bought a brand new machine.
It was over a year later when I stumbled across a way to boot Snow Leopard into 64 bit mode. Turns out that if you boot while holding down the 6 & 4 key combo (the ones above the QWERTY keys), then the machine runs in 64 bit mode. Go figure. Now my Snow Leopard and just about all of my applications - with the ironic exception of iTunes - runs in 64 bit. iTunes seems fine though; if there's a performance bottleneck, I really can't tell.
    Well, that's about it..
I hope that something I've mentioned can help you achieve your overall goal.
Finally, it's hard to jump onto a train, a large cat, or a surfboard that's already moving. But don't be surprised when someone a fraction of your age shows you how to.
    Best Regards,

  • Just received my GS60 2QE-040XFR: Big issues/Looking for help

    Hello,
I just received my GS60 ghost pro without any OS. Installed Win 8.1, drivers available in the hard drive, anti virus... and slowly but surely started having more and more BSOD (several types of error codes). At the same time, the laptop started having issues to reboot: looks like it's powering up during 1 second, then turning off, then trying to turn on 2 seconds after, turning off, etc... On the first tries it was able to boot onto the Win 8.1 from time to time (to have some more BSOD), now it's over, it can do that for minutes so I am not even trying anymore.
So I started looking on the internet for possible solutions, and my guess is that I have 2 different issues, I'd like to have some input about the community as I am quite new to MSI hardware:
Issue #1-The regular BSOD may come from the Killer Lan drivers. It looks like they have a some bad reputation, and I believe I started having BSOD as soon as I installed them. I'd like to format/install a new fresh Win 8.1 and not install this drivers anymore, unfortunately I cannot because of issue #2. Anyway, can anybody advice? If you believe the issue is coming from these drivers, is there any proper way to delete them and install better ones? which ones then?
Issue #2-Unfortunately for this one I believe I cannot do anything but sending the laptop back to MSI. My guess is that the laptop is not even able to reach the BIOS when booting. I'd like to clear the CMOS but I would need to open the laptop, which would end the warranty... Does anyone believe there is a possible workaround here?
    Hope someone can help...
Sorry for my poor english, that's not my native language.

Not sure if you are able to enter the OS now, but I'll still suggest you go to MSI's website to update your drivers.
    http://www.msi.com/support/nb/GS60-2QE-Ghost-Pro.html#down-driver
If all of the drivers are the latest ones, you can press CTRL+ALT+DEL to open Task Manager and go to Startup page to disable Killer Manager and restart again to see if it resolves the problem.

My macbook pro 2010 has started getting extremely noisy in the last few months and I had a strange warning flash up on the screen a month or so ago about a power or battery issue… can you help please?

Calibrating a 2010 MBP is not required.  All it will achieve is putting an unnecessary cycle on it and shortening its life:

You may try a SMC reset:

  • Lots of Trouble with a 1st generation MacBook

    Hi everyone,
I'm writing for my sister, who's in Thailand having trouble with her MacBook. Hopefully you can help with the information I have. I'm sorry for the long message.
About a week ago, her 1st generation MacBook (running Leopard), full off the couch. She says it fell maybe a foot and a half and landed on some clothes. She didn't think it was a big deal, but when she opened it again, her desktop image had been changed with the blue Apple default. Nothing else appeared wrong with the desktop icons or anything else.
Then, she noticed Photoshop wouldn't open, MS Word wouldn't let her type or save, and Safari/Firefox were running super slow. She tried Disk and Permissions verify/repair, and also tried popping out the RAM and putting it back in (in case it had been dislodged). Today, she said that Word either refuses to open or opens but says there is a problem with the Office Database. Safari and Firefox are still running really slow.
She says she took it to an Apple approved repairshop in Bangkok, where the guys ran MacTuneUp and a permissions repair on Word. At the shop the computer was running fine, but once she got it home, it started acting up again. At times, it'll be running like normal and then revert back to being slow.
She also said she tried to download a VLC player online the day before the laptop fell. I don't know which one she tried to download.
Does anybody have any ideas for her to try?
    Thanks for the help,
    Torea

To anyone who stumbles upon this post, we figured it out.
All we had to do was empty the cache in Safari and FireFox and it started working fine. We just didn't realize my sister had both browsers open the entire time.

  • 1st Generation MacBook Pro Microphone

I have a 1st generation MacBook Pro (Mid 2009) and I'm looking to used an external microphone instead of the internal built-in one. Is this possible? Would the Apple headphones with the mic on them be an option? How about clip-on mic that has a 3-prong jack? I have a feeling I may need to buy some sort of converter cable to make this work. Any help would be appreciated.

OWC has been pretty good to me. if you have a "Micron" brand simm installed already, then just pick up an additional simm of the same brand from OWC. Apple recommends (strongly) to used matched pairs in these machines. otherwise, the @GB mached kit is $30 + shipping.
I'd also consider putting 10.5 or 10.6 (when released) on there too. will be better off as updates will likely cease this fall when 10.6 is out.

  • HT1551 I ordered a rental movie on my computer and want to watch it on my 1st generation apple TV and it is not showing up there...any suggestions?

I ordered a rental movie on my computer and want to watch it on my 1st generation apple TV and it is not showing up there...any suggestions?

I had same problem last night with a movie rental not showing up under the 'Rented' tab in iTunes/Movies on my iMac: as I had no other rentals, there was no 'Rented' tab at all.
In iTunes 11, the Downloads icon only appears next to the Search bar while there is an active download. Once any  downloads are finished, the icon disappears.  I had no icon so I had to assume the downloading had finished (in the previous UI you could check download progress even after they had finished).
My movie rental did, however, show up under 'Rented Movies' under the 'Movies' tab in iTunes/Devices/(select any i/device) so I knew it was somewhere in my iTunes.  Yet, we couldn't access it via Apple TV.
I fiddle around for a bit, restarting iTunes, restarting the iMac, to no avail.  Then I did a little housekeeping and moved a different movie I'd imported awhile ago, from the 'Home Videos' tab under iTunes/Movies.  Under File/Get Info, the 'Media Kind' was incorrectly set to 'Home Video' so I changed it to 'Movie'.  Thus the file was moved over into the Movies tab.  Hey Presto!  The Rented tab suddenly showed up, and there was my rented movie!
This is the second time a movie rental did not show up after downloading.  Unfortunately my husband initiated the download so we figured he must've messed up somehow as he's not as familiar with iTunes as me.  Hence we opted to download the movie under a different iTunes account, which worked the second time with no problem.  Needless to say the invoice for the original download had no problem in finding us, hence we were effectively being charged twice for the same movie!  We have to contact apple support (such a hassle) but hopefully they will understand the issue (that's the difficult bit) and they are usually good at refunding when they finally accept the customer is genuine in their claim.
In case anyone is tempted to critique my method, we download rentals through iTune on our computer as we had too many problems trying to rent via Apple TV.  Often the movie was not available to watch for many hours after it was rented, even though we'd start 'download' halfway through the day and sit down at night to watch it!  We have also had problems with movies that kept stopping during viewing because it wasn't streaming fast enough.  We'd give some time and come back to viewing, only to encounter the same.  One time we gave gave up and tried again the next evening, only to find the movie expired.  There is meant to be 48 hours after you've started viewing to resume watching a movie.  Apple's only response to this was to advise we needed a broadband internet connection to stream the movie - this was despite me already telling them we have broadband.
Anyway, I hope this helps anyone experiencing similar issues with movie downloads.

What type of troubleshooting were we able to do with you? I want to make sure that we can get some sort of resolution for this problem.
It is quite possible the battery door may get your phone in working order again. I'm not sure if the store has it in stock, but it is available in our warehouse for $14.99 which can be ordered via customer service.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install a 64-bit Windows 7 or Vista version in your Mac. Make sure you downloaded these drivers > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1630 Also, if you have the Snow Leopard DVD you used to upgrade your Mac or the OS X DVD that came with your Mac, you can use it to install the Boot Camp drivers

  • 1st generation MacBook not pairing/connecting with Apple Wireless Keyboard

I just purchased an Apple Wireless Keyboard to use with my iPhone and my 1st generation MacBook.
I managed to pair/connect my keyboard with iPhone on my first try.
So far, however, I have not been able to pair or connect my keyboard with my MacBook.
Does anyone have a solution to this problem?
    Thanks.

    Hi Stefan,
Thanks for your help. Indeed, I followed the instructions for pairing and connecting the keyboard last night. I shut down my computer last night with the idea that a restart this morning might be helpful. Per your message, I attempted to follow the instructions again a moment ago, with no success.
Bluetooth on my MacBook and on my keyboard are both on. My MacBook is discoverable. Any thoughts about what the glitch might be?
    Thanks again!

  • I have an iPhone 4S, iPad and MacBook Air.  I'm looking for an app or program where I can track time spent of specific projects each day and also document details of each project.  Is there anything available that is synced through iCloud?

I have an iPhone 4S, iPad and MacBook Air.  I'm looking for a program or app that I can sync though iCloud that will allow me to us all of these devices to track time spent on projects each day along with the ability to add specific information about each project.  Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

I recommend you consider Omnifocus.  It is a task management program which runs on the Mac, Iphone & Ipad. I use it for task management and project management.  It let's you store additional information as well.   I sync all three devices through a Mobile Me account and I can enter data on any device and it is available on all devices.  I believe you can also sync through Dropbox.  I'm not sure that you can sync through iCloud yet.  The link to their website is:  www.omnigroup.com.  There may be less expensive alternatives, but this one meets my needs and syncs very well across all devices.

  • I have a 1st generation time capsule and an extreme b/g. Is the extreme slowing the network down

I have a 1st generation time capsule and an appe extreme b/g. Is the extreme slowing the network down? Should I dump it an get the new n version?

yes it is likely to be slowing down the network because you are using 802.11b/g
from what i recall with b/g a slow client can slow down the entire network to that clients speed.
this was the major improvement with 802.11n and Mimo. each client can be connected to the access point without affecting your speed to the rest of the network
its reccomended to get all new "N" equipment if you have the budget for it. some of those old airports and time capsules can still be worth something on amazon marketplace so you might be able to sell them
if you want to create / join / extend a netwowrk your going to probably need all "n" based equipment.
buy the new 4th generation time capsule or the new 5th generation airport they have better stronger radios
in the mean time configure your base station router to a high multicast rate, so it will prevent devices connecting to it at 1-2 mbps speeds and slowing down your network
if you have an apple care covered mac remember the airport / time capsule rule. all airports and time capsules purchased 2 years before you bought your mac to the 3 years of apple care covers them. if you do not have apple care then the standard warranty applies

I currently run the Design and Web Premium CS6 on a first generation MacBook Air and want to buy a new MacBook Pro. How do I know whether I can install my Adobe programs onto the new computer? Because I know there is some kind of limit.
Also, I had to install the software twice on my same computer before because I had to reboot the computer. I don't know if this affects the limit.

You are allowed to have two activated installations so there should not be a problem having working installations on the two machines.  If by chance you have somehow tied up two activations for the one machine you can have Adobe support help resolve that thru chat.
