  • Last minute advice

    Hi guys.
I've been in these forums for the past few weeks for help and stuff and I'm about to buy my macbook. I just want some last minute advice before I click buy.
The model I'm looking to buy is the second model up of the retina display.
    The specs are;
    2.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
    Turbo Boost up to 2.9GHz
    8GB 1600MHz memory
    256GB PCIe-based flash storage1
    Intel Iris Graphics
    Built-in battery (9 hours)
    I'm a student and my intended use is;
School work. I'm an English major so I need to write almost everyday. I also do personal writing.
    Web browsing: YouTube, reddit, etc
    Social networking/media: tumblr, Pinterest etc
I know macs are great for some artsy stuff so Id like to also dabble with that tech.
I'll also be using it for stuff like netflix hbo and the like.
I'm buying this macbook with the intention of using it for pretty much everything I can use it for. I also plan on using this unit for as long as I can.
So, I'd like to know if there's anything I need to immediately add to it since these models aren't customizable and if this build will last me for my intended uses.
    Thanks

    Heyimjehan,
if you’re going to buy a Retina model, then I’d recommend maximizing its RAM, since it’s not upgradeable after purchase. That could also help if you find yourself doing more than just dabbling in the artsy stuff (graphic design, video editing, &c.). I’d also recommend the purchase of an AppleCare plan if you’re going to keep it for at least three years, as well as an external drive for use as a Time Machine backup destination. Contacting your insurance agent might be worthwhile to find out what coverage against theft for both MacBook Pro and external drive would cost.

  • Buying A Mac Pro, any last minute advice?

    Hi all!
Looking for last minute tips! I'm on a budget so want to get a basic model that I can add to as my needs increase. I'll be cutting short form work initially & will need to work SD uncompressed from digibeta (2:1 would be fine). Ideally I'd like the facility to expand into HD at some point. This is the spec I'm thinking of & any advise would be much appreciated.
    Two 2.8Ghz Quad-Core intel Xeon
    4GB Memory
    NIVIDIA 8800 GFX Card
    320GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s (For Scratch Disk)(Will this do for now?)
Airport Extreme (Anything I need to worry about connecting my suite to internet?)
23" Apple Display (I know 1 screen's not ideal but think I can get away with this for now?)
    Decklink Card (basic one)
Any thoughts at all (things worth buying from the off, any way I can save money) would be really appreciated.
    Thanks!

Ummm... I think you may have posted this in the wrong forum.

  • Some last minute advice really appreciated...

I'm about to get my MB Pro and want to install FCS 3 on it. As Final Cut likes clean installs Im thinking to completely erase/format the MB Pro upon receiving it, and then install FCS 3. Is this recommended? If so, (and as ive never used Snow Leopard before), could someone pls tell me a reliable procedure.
I also want to use a G-Tech miniRAID 1TB as a Final Cut EXT. HDD.. I asume I will format this the same as the program dive i.e MacOS Extended (journalled) ???
    Thanks,

    hello david,
thats true but unfortunately iLife comes preinstalled with the MB Pros and I thought by taking it off it would free the system somewhat of any potential conflicts etc.. I thought just a totally clean install with OS would be what everyone else would be doing in my case? maybe that's too extreme?!
Also, should the external G-TECH drive be formatted: MAC OS Ext. Journalled? as they are on my MacPro tower system with its 4 internal drives.

  • Got a last minute gig tomorrow morning, shooting on a Panasonic HVX...

Got a last minute gig tomorrow morning, shooting on a Panasonic HVX which I've only shot on a few times. This is a 4 page script, comedy with exaggerated colors (pimps wearing pink for example i guess).
I've only used the HVX a few times, and from my Sony FX-1 I was taught to almost only shoot at 60 fps (tutorial DVD on the FX1 and Z1U). Recently on a shoot with 2 HVXs, the director set them at (I could be wrong) 2000 FPS (or something way above 60), and his footage looked great. We did talking head interviews and sports/boxing. Tomorrow this skit should be a 'face off' situation and a small action scene. And I have no HVX genius looking over my shoulder telling me what to do. Either way I'm sure I'll survive this shoot and I'm not expecting expert forum tutorials last minute... I'm just looking for last minute advice if it's there. Here are a few questions.
Is there a quick rule of thumb for framerate with this camera? Or a link to a article? What is safe? What is cool?
I'm shooting outdoors from morning til evening, should I be manually White Balancing all day long? (I have warm cards, do you like those?)
I'm a last minute DP, I have no clue what they have on set. We could have few cards and long transfers, or many cards. What HD format will take up the least amount of space on a card that is still worth using... and what is the best format this thing can shoot incase we have the time and space to utilize?
Lastly, the last time I used this camera on my own I ended up tracking what seemed like 4 separate audio channels. Is this necessary? Can this be changed to just 2? I assume that will save a little HD space and be less to deal with in post.
    Anything else? You tell me.
    Thanks for your time!
    -Monty

As jim said, because of the short duration these record in, and the need to constantly be swapping, dumping them to P2 store or hard drive, then getting them back...it isn't condusive to a reality situation where you need ot follow the people, get the moments as they occur. The ability to record one full hour at a time is what is needed. The need to be "invisible" is needed...and it won't happen with a tech constantly running back and forth to the camera swapping out cards.
Plus you will have to store the MFX originals onto hard drives, then CONVERT them to Quicktime. You will have dozens of hard drives with just the MXF, then need more for the converted files.
Currently there is no way when you import the footage to tell what came from what camera. It is stored in the meta data, but that information isn't transferred when the footage in converted to Quicktime. The only way you can know is if the Tech lables the folders that he stores them on as A, B, C...but then you need to go back to the original folders and look for your clip to find out what camera it is. Unlike with tape where you instanly label it B002, or D013 or whathaveyou. And when you log and capture, that is something that you have at your disposal...so when a producer comes in and says "a great moment happened at 4:00 yesterday on the D camera. Lets look at it." With the tape method, you can do that easily. With the P2 method...that is a difficult task. One of the big drawbacks to the format...and something VITAL to reality TV.
Any time the camera is stopped, a new clip is made. So instead of being able to scrub thru a 15 minute chunk, you have to look at a dozen clips to find what you want.
If they want DVCPRO HD, they are going to have to hire four Varicams. If you are in LA and need to know where, I know a few places.

  • Last-minute help! Video quality drops after burn

I'm exporting a video out of FCP using Compressor, saving directly to the DVD format for burning inside DVD Studio Pro. When I preview the video inside DSP, it looks amazing. After I finish burning the disc and view it in DVD Player, the video quality looks horrible.
    See a screenshot here:
    http://www.door62.com/temp/DVD-quality.jpg
The one on the left is DVD Player, the one on the right is the preview inside DSP.
Any advice? This is actually ridiculously last-minute... Any help would be hugely appreciated

I have been having simliar trouble, esp. with textured backgrounds in the video.
Specifically, someone sitting in a board room delivering a short message (2 minutes) on camera. The background is a textured wood panel with a continuously changing color gradient.
I encode in Compressor, NTSC lower field, 2-pass VBR, 6.1 Mbps avg., 7.2 Mbps max., AIF audio. I have also tried a number of bit rate variations including CBR and AC3 audio.
I drop the clip in a DVDSP track and it looks fine in simulator. Also open the m2v in QT Pro, it looks fine.
After building, I check the TS_Folder in Apple DVD Player, and the background pulses, shifting from light to dark and is filled with artifacts. It looks even worse on a set-top player.
I have had problems like this a number of times, and end up having to use other programs on Windows to get around it. Kind of a pain.
Has anyone else seen anything like this?

  • A last minute suggestion to Find My Mac

The newly introduced (yet to come, but we suppose it comes out along with iOS5 on OCT 4) Find My Mac power is a strong defense against lost Macs. But here comes one trivial question:
Such a measure, to be effective, should be working "backwards", not "forwards", should't it?
By saying backwards, I mean, the mechanism should be able to protect it self, override current settings and let you Find YOUR Mac after you realized your Mac has been stolen. To make it a really effective method, Find My Mac functionality should be activated by default, not by Prompting!
Here comes a hilarious picture. Even if you got luck, enabling "Find My Mac" beforehand it's stolen, the thief can readily reinstall OS and "don't allow" Find My Mac to even start to function. What's the point of "Find My Mac" then? Or is Apple assuming all thieves are as stupid thus forgetting to refreshing your whole HDD?
This is totally not professional. As I know, all the "recovery" softwares for mac, they work in the same "forwards" way. Assuming you managed to Enable them beforehand, and hope for the luck that those thieves are stupid enough not to erase your HDD and yet smart enough to know your password to log in in the first place.
A real world Effective "Find My Mac" should be working backwards, Apple technicians should think about realistic situations "rather than fatasy":
1, Activates automatically, or can be activated remotely under authorization (like, from Apple or Police Department) AFTER you found your computer is stolen or deactivated/restored by the thief.
2, Binds Serial Number. S/N is the only reliable identification for a Mac, since usually thieves will not replace your mother board. It should work in the way that once you knows your S/N and you have registered it under your Apple ID (the whole meaning of ever registered it, isn't it?), you should be able to know where the Mac with the same S/N are.
3, It's totally OK that is uses Internet to locate, given our macs don't have GPS or SIM Card. You see I won't raise far-fetched expectations.
That is one of the only logical way that Find My Mac could ever be useful in a case of theft. And that's what all the customers really wanted, being victims for stolen Macs for years. I know and understand Apple totally doesn't have to do any of these. But isn't it nice we can use Apple Community, Serial Number and its Registration database to protect ourselves. Only Apple can do this. You had direct access to all your devices. I don't see why you can't do this while you can boldly "report, or steal" people's whereabouts for business benifitials in your ios.
Is it beacause after weighing in and out, you find it's not worth it? Is it not worth it to protect your own betrusted consumers against their largest threat to their products: theft? (Note, not all theft are indebted to the owner himself. Break in, Robbery).
If you do love your consumers, it really takes nothing to build a defence within the Apple system. I see "Find My Mac" is a huge step forward. But i hope it can really work to solve real life problems.
Just my last minute suggestions. I am waiting to find my lost Mac one day. I will wait to that day. Because it's not technically impossible. It's just some guy, they don't do it.

The new "possessor" does not need to erase or reinstall. All he needs to do is boot to Recovery HD (single user mode for OS 10.6.8 or earlier), and reset the password–> http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/24/reset-mac-os-x-10-7-lion-password/
For "almost" thief-proof option, you must use your iPad or iPhone to activate firmware password as soon as possible after the Mac goes missing or have already activated a firmware password login. For Macs built 2011 or later, that can only be bypassed at an authorized Apple service shop that SHOULD request ID from the possessor.
A firmware password prompt will appear at the next restart, and no optional boot is available. That means no option to reset admin password, or erase, or boot to single user mode, or reset NVRAM / PRAM, until the firmware is reset using a special digital key only available to the shop. Even a new storage mechanism (new HDD, etc.) cannot turn off the firmware prompt. The digital key is canceled and a new key provided periodically, thus twarting any useful distribution outside of official channels.
Apple does not take a pro-active stance on using firmware password, because for the owners with bad memories, it can become a huge headache and will cause ill will.

  • Pre-order contents may differ again at the last minute

    It has happened again!
It happened with the new Portishead album Third. At the last minute they put a note on the page saying that the contents are subject to change without notice and the final product may differ. Then one of the bonus live tracks got removed!
I have the new Verve alb Forth on pre-ord and i am currently awaiting for it to download, but it just came up with the same warning, so I am thinking that one of the two free live bonus tracks are going to be taken off some reason as well.
If this happens, then I am sorry but it is not on. It's not a big deal, but it's a deal. If you go to a shop and pay for a bag of apples 1 day before you get them, and they say that you will get two extra apples for paying up front, then you should get two extra apples, or else a free bag of apples the next day.

Actually, just to correct myself. Neither album gave away the bonus tracks for pre-ordering, but certainly they should definately be included if you preordered.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Apple's policy on sales of digital content is that all sales are final. If however you wish to appeal to Apple, select the content which is causing a problem and use the 'Report a problem' button in Your Purchase History on your computer.
Currently, if your purchase happens to be your most recent purchase you will not be redirected to the report form, in this case use the report a problem option from the invoice that was emailed to you.
I believe your issues are probably a network issue, which unless you resolve are likely to be repeated again.

  • TS1897 last minutes of songs won't play

The last minute or so of a lot of songs won't play on my laptop or my ipod.  It just skips over it and goes to the next on the list.  I tried restoring my ipod, but it does it on my laptop as well.  Now what?  Any ideas?

Are these tracks you have downloaded from the iTunes Store or were they imported from outside of iTunes?  If they are iTunes downloads, delete them from your library and redownload again at no cost via iCloud.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, you'll need to re-rip or reimport these music into iTunes from its original source.

  • Technician Appointment Cancelled at the last minute, Service then delayed 1 Week.

I am hugely disappointed in how Verizon handled my scheduled appointment to have an ONT box fixed after having no fios internet/phone/tv service for 4 days in the Northern Virginia area. They then cancelled it on the day of said appointment (today) and will be delaying the service for another week. During a short power outage on a Thursday night (July 30) the internet, phone and tv services went out despite the electricity coming back on. I called Verizon Support the next morning and was put on hold for over 30 minutes only to have the CSR give/hang up on me. He said "I am going to run some tests", put me on hold, spoke about more "tests", hung up and did not call back despite me providing my 2 mobile phone numbers. I called back again and waited another 20 minutes to speak to a different CSR who was clear and more professional. He diagnosed the issue and determined the ONT and BBU likely needed to be replaced and scheduled for a technician to come on Monday 8am-12pm August 3rd. Keep in mind that is 4 days without internet. I am a software engineer and university student who needs to use internet for school and work/business that cannot wait weeks or even days on end. However, the CSR promised that this was the earliest time he could schedule and reassured me the technicians would be there. I understood, and I patiently waited.   Its Monday morning 8:30am, I get a ticket confirmation reminder via phone that the technician will be there 8am-12pm. So I planned to take off work during this time. 10:00am
I get a automated call saying that the technician appointment has been cancelled and rescheduled to Thursday Aug. 6! No email, no voicemail reminder, no explanation, just a machine call... I am confused, believe this to be a mistake and call support, which takes 15 minutes to reach a CSR. 10:20am
CSR responds and tries to see if he can get answers as to why dispatch has made such a long delay last minute. Dispatch puts him on hold for over 15 minutes. It is worth noting that during this time CSR was noticeably frustrated with the slow response time of the dispatcher and problems with the scheduling system, and for some reason insisted on sharing this with me, perhaps mistakenly assuming the excuse could be used as justification. As a responsible and paying customer, I am not interested in Verizon’s internal failures. I am interested in timely, responsible communication and action, especially when scheduled/promised in advance. The CSR said there was nothing he could do even after trying to find an available technician through a dispatch scheduler. He ran some more failed tests on my ONT, and offered his sympathies as well as a callback if anything changes. I did appreciate his help and thanked him.  Appalling and Unprofessional. Should I even expect the Verizon technician arrive at all on Thursday Aug. 6 or to arrive at an unexpectedly out of the timeframe like many others have experienced here online?I feel it is my duty to inform Verizon and as many customers I can so that problems like can be quickly solved in the future. I expect Verizon to take this and other complaints into serious consideration and make corrections to permanently amend and improve the situation. It is a minimum to expect positive and clear communication in CSRs as well as professionalism and coordination from technical services. I will send this through all avenues of communication with Verizon: mail, online forum, and the Better Business Bureau until a positive response is received from the other end.

    Hi VinceNG,
Your issue has been escalated to a Verizon agent. Before the agent can begin assisting you, they will need to collect further information from you. Please go to your profile page for the forum and look at the top of the middle column where you will find an area titled "My Support Cases". You can reach your profile page by clicking on your name beside your post, or at the top left of this page underneath the title of the board.
Under "My Support Cases" you will find a link to the private board where you and the agent may exchange information. The title of your post is the link. This should be checked on a frequent basis, as the agent may be waiting for information from you before they can proceed with any actions. To ensure you know when they have responded to you, at the top of your support case there is a drop down menu for support case options. Open that and choose "subscribe". Please keep all correspondence regarding your issue in the private support portal.

Software update 10.9.2 installations last minute has taken now for 45 minutes.
    Anybody having  same trouble?

I just had this happen to me too – hung on "Completing Installation" for over an hour on the 10.9.2 update. Got confidence from this thread to restart (and things also seem fine for me), but I've had bad experiences doing that with similar system updates, so it certainly makes me more wary of applying Mac OS updates than I should need to be. I definitely expect more of Apple.

have a look at method get_snapshot of class lcl_r3data. This class is defined in program SAPWL_ST03G. It uses FM SWNC_GET_SNAPSHOT_FRAME. Basically that FM uses class cl_swnc_glob_snapshot.
