Last Resort for Sad iPod screen
I read in an earlier discussion that some experts disconnect the battery and the HD from the main board. I just removed the battery but am unable to locate the HD. Or is the HD connected to the battery somehow? In removing the battery have I already disconnected the HD from the main board?

The Last resort for my Ipod Nano
I have 4 mb Ipod nano that dosent respond. I've tried the 5R's, when connecting it to my PC, ituens dosen't recognise it, and its dosen't charge when connecting to the mains.
It's less than 6 months old so it should'nt be a battery problem! if it is a battery problem what can I do.
Any advice is welcome as I appear to be going around in circles trying to solve this on the web.

You said your iPod is less then 6 months old? Your iPod should be still covered by its 1 year standard hard-ware warranty. If you go to apple.com/support on the right-hand side you should see a spot where you can enter your iPod's serial number and it will let you know if your warranty is still in effect. Also since you have tried the 5 R's you can send your iPod in for repair via depot.info.apple.com/ipod

Cant Get Rid Of The Sad Ipod Screen
Ok, well it shows the sad ipod screen, and when I plug it into the computer it shows a battery picture with the charging lightning bolt but it isnt charging. Those "5 R's" didnt do a thing because my computer dosnt even acknowledge that its plugged in!

Is it dangerous for my iPod screen that the glass is crack
Like the title, I'm wondering if the fact that the glass is crack on my iPod touch is dangerous for the screen.
If the crack did not go through the full depth of the glass, there is no danger at all, except for the appearance. If the crack is all the way through, it is possible that some moisture or dirt can penetrate and cause some degredation of the screen. However, if it's appearance is not a bother to you, I think that you should keep using it as it is. If you have Applecare, then by all means,you should take advantage of it , and have the ipod replaced with an alike model. Otherwise, you would have to pay to have it taken care of.

You're my last resort for this puzzler
I tried to do a merge with Word and it froze every time (Office X). I thought is was Word that was at fault. I reinstalled it and it continued to freeze.
I logged out and logged in as a different user and it works fine.
I repaired permissions, copied all the preferences from the 'good' user to my user and logged in as myself. Word still freezes doing exaclty the same thing with the same data files.
Does anyone have any ideas about how to remedy this strange issue for me?

I tried to use Pages to create a page of labels but I couldn't find a way to do it. Avery has templates which can be filled with data (name <tab> address <tab> etc,) with a return after each record in Word but I don't see how to do the same thing with Pages. I think Appleworks used to be able to do something similar but I don't have anything other than Word for this purpose. I'm not a heavy user of Word btw.

IPod mini displays sad ipod on screen
Well I've had my iPod mini for about 6 months now and up until a month ago it has been working great..but it has started showing me the folder with the explanation point and the sad ipod. I have already restored my iPod once, but now I think I need to do it again, but the thing is whenever I try to connect my iPod to my computer my computer won't recognize it. I've tried everything but still nothing works. And the only way to restore it is if my iPod can be recognized. I think it might be because my iPod is not charged, but how can I tell if it is charging or not if it only shows the apple logo or the sad ipod screen? Help needed Please!!! I have a windows computer too.

The first diagnosis is correct - the Hard Drive has died. This is common on iPod's of this age. You have two options. Firstly, you can try the repair yourself. This would involve taking the iPod apart and replacing the hard drive inside. This can be quite tricky. Your second choice is to send it to a repair company, such as mine (www.dr-pod.com). However, we are in the UK, but there are lots in the US too.

IPod not recognised by computer, won't charge + displays sad iPod face
Ok, whenever i attempt to charge my iPod with the mains, it resets itself then shows a sad ipod face. When i connect it to my computer it resets itself, shows the sad face and then sticks on the low battery screen. The "five r's" do absolutly nothing, (didn't last time either)and i've tried forcing it into disk mode, but it ain't happnin' lol. I've also dropped it quite a few times to see if it would correct the disk, but it hasn't. iPod also had a new battery this morning.
Anythin' else i could try?

1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iPod Updater and click “Restore”
In case you do not manage to do a “Format” on a window computer, try to use some 3rd party disk utility software, e.g.“HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool”.

You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

My iPod displays black & white battery charge icon and sad iPod face. help!
I plugged my iPod into an older iMac; it froze and had to be restarted.
I restarted it and started listening on shuffle.
It would skip through all of my songs without me pressing any buttons.
I restarted again and it worked fine.
I came home and plugged it into my 10.3.9 iMac and the tracks started skiping and barely playing on iTunes.
I tried to eject it, but it wouldn't...so I unplugged it.
I then restarted it, but after the silver-on-black iMac icon came up, the sad iPod face showed.
So I pluged it back into the computer. It spontaniously restarted when I tried all of the steps of restarting and reinstalling.
Then it just displays a black& white old battery charge icon with a thunder bolt that flickers on the screen now and then.
And continues to restart itself with first the apple icon turning into the sad ipod face and then into the battery charge icon.
I really do not want to restore my iPod. I am hoping to keep my files but at this point, my future is bleak.
This happened last night. They said it might just be my battery so I kept it plugged in for about 10 hours. Nothing.
What can I do?

so ive got some major ipod problems. cant get rid of sad ipod so i put into disk mode. then it changed to the exclamation point folder thingy. tried restoring it but my itunes either freezes up or doesnt show my ipod when i plug it in (whether its on disk mode or regular.) PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

My iPod Mini seems to be having a lot of issues. The sad iPod screen appears shortly after I turn it on, first going from the Apple logo to that screen, and then shutting off. I tried to reset the iPod as the website suggested, but it did not respond at all. When I plug the iPod into a USB port, it does not respond, and the batter logo appears 1/3 full, and frozen. I am not sure if this is purely a battery problem in terms of being unable to restart and reset the iPod and I am not sure exactly what to do. I cannot get the iPod to turn on or to interact with either myself or a computer.

Seems like alot of people having this problem. Sad iPod thing.
I've had this iPod since Christmas. It's a 30g video one. It's worked great every day until today. Last week I left it in my car for about a week, got it out, plugged it in my computer to charge and it froze iTunes. So I unplugged it (nothing else I could do), and now it cycles between sad iPod saying "www.apple.com/support/ipod" and the apple sign and "Extremely low battery" for about 5m until it turns off. I've tried everything, including the "Disk Mode" thing, I've tried it about 500 times. It always does the same thing, goes back to sad iPod. Nothing responds when I plug it into the computer. Seen a few of the same problem but no answers. Please, if you can, let me know. I know if I take it in they'll say "It's corrupted gotta get a new one." Me and my cousin got these iPods on the same day, both broke within a week of each other.

"Sad iPod Face" + iPod isn't recognised
Hi (iPod Mini 4GB)
When i plugged it in the other day because the battery was empty, it wasn't recognised by itunes or my computer. All i saw was a frozen charging bar with the lightening bolt at one end on the iPod screen. After doing 'menu + select' for 6 seconds, i saw a 'sad ipod face' on the screen...
So I viewed the apple help page which instructed me to:
1. switch to 'hold' and the back again
2. hold down 'menu + select' for 6 seconds
3. hold down 'play + select' for 6 seconds.
But still i keep getting the sad face followed by frozen charging bar.
Could anyone help?

For Window computer

Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod

Sad Ipod icon while switching from PC to Mac
I just bought a new Macbook for school and was using my Ipod to transfer my files from my PC to my Mac. I got everything transferred perfectly and deleted it off of my Ipod. I then plugged my Ipod into my Macbook to change the settings to work with a mac. The Ipod froze so I unplugged it and tried again and wham, sad ipod icon.
Is there anything I can do that doesn't require spending a lot of money to fix or replace it? I can't take it to a genius bar right away because the closest one is over an hour away, but if that is all I can do to fix it I will go there.

I am not suggesting that you should follow as well, but just read them as your reference. You are the person to make the call.
Finally, I read a fair comments from dwb, regarding of slapping the back of the iPod multiple times

Occasional freeze and Sad iPod on restart after replacing harddrive
Ok, need another techie to offer an opinion here. I started having issues with my 60gb a couple months ago, freezing, getting the sad ipod screen alot and getting worse. I determined to the best of my knowledge, being a Systems Analyst at work, that it was the harddrive. The ipods out of warranty, so I found a replacement drive online from a HD company. I installed the new HD, and after finagling it for a bit (battery very low) I restored it. Working great, until this morning on way to work, it froze on me and had some difficulty reseting, I finally had to do the System Reset from the Diagnostic Menu. This happened once again at work. It's been running fine for the last 2 hours, so Im not sure whats going on with it. The new HD was guaranteed 100% working and free from errors. Anyone have any ideas?

Unfortunately, I believe we're still using the original software that was mailed with our Ipod. As of now, the Ipod (4g) does nothing but beep and show the folder with a question mark.
Any suggestions on how to solve this problem? as we're just out of warranty? Many thanks.

This is more of a results post than a question post.
Recently I had several problems with my clickwheel
iPod, including having it freeze and not respond and
eventually going into the failure mode of cycling
through the icons listed in the the subject line. I
tried all of the recommendations I could find,
including Apple's "five Rs" and going into the
diagnostics mode as described in this site (more on
this later):

All tests came up Okay.
I tried erasing (using the iPod internal method and
the Disk Utility in OS X) and restoring the iPod
countless times. Nothing seemed to work.
Finally, I managed, somehow, to get the Disk utility
to show the hidden 32 MB FAT partition (I can't
remember how this happened). I erased (formatted)
and restored that, and instead of restoring the
current (3.1.1) iPod software version, I restored to
3.1. This seems to have done the trick. I'm fairly
certain that just restoring to 3.1 would have fixed
the problem.
The troubles started shortly after updating to the
most recent software version and seem to have gone
away by backing up to the previous version.
I think going back a software version would fix many
problems people suddenly seem to be having with their
iPods.
