Last Window closed - quits the application

I remember seeing somewhere a little shareware program that quits an application when the last open window in the applicaton is closed. Can anyone direct to a program that will do this for me. Folks moving to Mac from Windows have this difficulty of closing a window and thinking the application has been quit. Thank you.

Have you searched MacUpdate or VersionTracker. Both of those sites have just about every piece of software on them.
Leaving an app open doesn't hurt anything. It doesn't use cpu or waste memory unless you have so many apps open that VM and RAM can't handle it. What you want would have to patch itself into each app to determine that the last window was closed and most likely cause more issues than leaving the app open.
Cmd+Q works a lot better for quitting than clicking the window close button.

many times it happnes that even I had closed the application window  it keep running  on backend and I have to manualy close it again by going in  'forced quit'.. any solution....

Closing the window doesn't quit the application on Mac like it does in Windows. You have to select Quit (Program Name) from the top menu or use the keyboard shortcut Command + Q

When closing Firefox windows, I would like a warning before the last window closes. The about:config settings do nothing. There is a warning for multiple tabs... why not for the last window? I do not use tabs... just windows... I have a mouse button programmed for that. It is really irritating to have to restart Firefox all the time and then open the history window because no warning was issued!

This is ridiculous. I've had this problems for years now and I'm finally walking away from Firefox. I use my keyboards more than my mouse, and how many times does your finger slip and hit Command Q instead of W. How come FF can't reset something as trivial as this? So many people are having problems with this?
Feels like FF has become too big, too slow and just not cooperative anymore. What a shame, I've been using Netscape/Firefox for 13 years. This is silly.

are you backing up files, or doing a Time machine backup, either way, the Time machine will STOP when finished and show "last backup at XXXXXX"  meaning its done...... OR if when transferring files, it will show a progress bar on your desktop and vanish when files are copied.
Open up the Hitachi drive (your G drive is made by Hitachi, and the best made by the way).....and see if the files are there.
a MORE VISUAL way is to open the hard drive file, and drag and drop files INTO the Gdrive and you can see them visually be copied there as you do it.
To see your HD on your desktop GOTO  FINDER......PREFERENCES....then GENERAL TAB.........check the box marked HARD DRIVES.........then your Gdrive will appear on your desktop........open it from there,  and DRAG and drop files from anywhere INTO the Gdrive....... easy visual way to see the files being copied into the Gdrive.

  • Why can't I open PDF files on my iMac. I installed Adobe Reader and accepted the end user license, as instructed then quit the application and relaunched it and I still can't view the PDF document. The screen comes out black. Please advice. Thanks

Why can I view PDF files from the Web on my iMac even after I installed Adobe Reader and accepted the end user license agreement.I then quit the application relaunched it, as instructed snd still the PDF document comes out blank or black. Please advice. Thanks

Are you saying that Adobe Reader or Preview can't read PDF file that you download? Or, are you saying that you can't display PDF files in your Safari broweer? If the latter, then delete any AdobePDFViewer plugins you find in /Library/Internet Plug-ins/ and restart. That should allow Safari to display PDFs in its window. BTW, that's the worst place to view them. Better to download them and use Adobe Reader or Preview.

  • How can I close windows when quitting an application - but leave desktop windows open?

    In Mavericks...
Is there any way to close the windows of application (when quitting - ie System Preferences => General) BUT not have this affect the finder application.
I want the windows I have opened in the finder to remain opened, but everything else to close upon quitting

Well, for some time now (since I upgraded to Mavericks) my startup goes on and on.
It will, on occasion, finish correctly and I can go on with my work, but usually, it hangs.
I can restart the finder 2 or 3 times and get it to finish loading.
If I go into System Preferences => General => and turn “Close windows when quitting an application” on, then restart, the finder usually starts up faster and does not hang
Obviously, there is some operation that is running in the background that is trying to restore itself to some unknown state that is holding up the finder application.
I have uninstalled and turned off all sort of applications that run in the background, but have not yet been able to locate the culprit.
So, I’d like to be able to have “Close windows when quitting an application” on because everything else on the machine can revert to a clean start-up state -- but I want the windows I leave opened in the finder to remain opened and where I put them.

  • I currently use a iMac OS X 10.6.8 and I cannot open iPhoto. Every time I click on iPhoto the coloured wheel comes up and lets me go no further, leaving me with no other option but to force quit the application. HELP!!

i currently use a iMac OS X 10.6.8 and I cannot open iPhoto. Every time I click on iPhoto the coloured wheel comes up and lets me go no further, leaving me with no other option but to force quit the application.
it is showing all my existing photos but will not let me click on any of them, nor will it allow me to import any new photos into iPhoto.
I am really worried that I cannot access all of my photos and even more worried as I need to back them up!!
    HELP!!

    Try repair the Library:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • When I click onto the firefox webbrowser, I get the message "firefox has stopped working, windows will close the application to find a solution to the problem " This has been going on for several days, I've had to go back IE to access web pages

When I click onto the firefox webbrowser, I get the message "firefox has stopped working, windows will close the application to find a solution to the problem."

I had this exact same problem.  I found this fix and it worked for me.
    Step 1:
Browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support and copy the filen named QTMovieWin.dll.
    Step 2:
Browse and past that file into C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes.
Hope this helps you.  I wish I could remember where I saw this originally so I could thank them.
    Good Luck.

  • Problem when quitting the application flash cs4

Just having a trouble when i quit the application, it seems the application is blocked and i am obliged to click (ctrl-alt-delete) and stop the processor of flash... I hope someone can help me out in this problem...

I found out that it was due to a large itunes library, if you start itunes while holding the 'option' key you can create a new library(empty) at a different location like the desktop. then close itunes and try opening BDM and see if it works. Afterwords just option start itunes again and choose the old folder where your itunes library resides and everything should be back to normal, for itunes anyway!

  • Does Safari use up bandwidth if I leave it running in the background with zero tabs open?  Do I have to quit the application each time I am done to avoid exceeding my internet usage/host quota?

If I leave Safari running in the background with zero tabs open, does it still use up bandwidth?  Do I have to quit the application each time I am done to avoid exceeding my internet usage/host quota?  I'd rather not have to since quitting the application and restarting it when I need to will quickly become tedious, but if that saves me on bandwidth usage, I'll do it.  Thanks!

  • HT1338 Since my last update to Itunes the application refuses to close

Since my last update to Itunes the application refuses to close and slowly locks my laptop until I reboot.  When I reboot it reloads all of my email deleted all day and sometimes the day prior.  I have run disk utilities repair disk permissions.  This works for a short and the whole thing starts all over again.  Does any on have any hints?

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

  • EventScript for event beforeClose while quitting the application

A script which listens to the event beforeClose and which in some cases should show a dialog to choose between some options works very well after the normal close-command.
But it runs into a problem while quitting the application.
If the dialog doesnt have to be opened everything is ok.
But if the dialog appears, the application wants to quit while the script wants to open the dialog.
Both keep fighting with each other and so I have to shoot down InDesign.
How could the quitting of the application be blocked as long as the script is doing its job?
Or how could the eventscript be prevent from execution if the close-command is not executed by the user but by the quit-command?

There are many reasons why you would want to change the action with the filter node. For example if you also have a value change event for the button, you could turn a right-click (which normally would open the right-click menu) into a left click that then immediately fires the value change event.
Similarly, you could have a value change and a double-click even for a listbox. Then you could add a fiterling mouse down event that would turn a single-click (normally only trigering a value change) into a double-click for certain values, but leave it at a single-click for other values.
